Teddy Atlas was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2019. He is one of the foremost fight commentators of this generation and one of the boxing's great trainers. He welcomed Boxing Life Stories host Tris Dixon into his Staten Island home to go through his story and his time in the sport. Starting with an intimate look at his childhood and the moments that carved his character, Atlas remembers his time running wild in New York before moving to Catskill where he was moulded further still by Hall of Fame trainer Cus D'Amato. Atlas gives great insight into those days, recalls the first time he set eyes on a young prospect named Mike Tyson and much more. Atlas also discusses many of the stars he's trained, including Michael Moorer, Wilfred Benitez, Donnie Lalonde and others but it's after his light-heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk recently suffered a hurtful loss to Artur Beterbiev that shows him in a light you may not have seen him in before. It's compelling listening. Next week: Irish Micky Ward talks about The Fighter, the film of his life, the Gatti trilogy and so much more. Boxing Life Stories is brought to you by Hanson Lee Resourcing and DELCO Safety Compliance. Teddy's book, Atlas: From the Streets to the Ring: A Son's Struggle to Become a Man is now available as an audiobook with Teddy narrating https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07X4DZDGT/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_taud_p1_i0
James English, The Anything Goes Show Ep76.The story of joe Egan.Born and bred in Dublin, Big Joe Egan, as he is affectionately known, got his first ring baptism of fire when he fought the national junior champion Steve Collins. In Joe's second fight against Collins he proved that he'd come on in leaps and bounds. By the age of 24 he had recorded over 80 wins, 7 Irish titles and he was a Golden Gloves Champion. Joe was encouraged by Floyd Patterson to try his luck in the USA, so Joe joined Mike Tyson's training camp in the Catskill mountains with the great Cus D'Amato. Joe became like a brother to Mike Tyson, who once said of Joe after a particularly vicious sparring session, that Joe was the Toughest White Man on the Planet. The two became the firmest of friends.Joe's dreams of continuing as a boxer were cruelly shattered when he was forced to quit following a serious road accident on the night of his second pro fight. Changing fortunes saw him struggle to get his life back on track. His personal life hit the headlines after his former glamorous fiancée Lisa Murphy left him for Lord of the Dance (1997) Michael Flatley. The downward spiral continued with a new pub business venture pitting Joe against organised protection racketeers armed with guns, axes and machetes. Joe was shot and nearly died and was also later charged with attempted murder.Follow me on social media

Teddy Atlas was born to a well-respected doctor in a wealthy part of Staten Island. Most kids like him end up going to an Ivy League school to become some sort of white collar professional. Teddy? Teddy dropped out of high school, went to jail, and ended up becoming a trainer to 18 world champion boxers, including heavyweight champion Michael Moore, who defeated Evander Holyfield for the title in 1994. Today on the show I talk to Teddy about how and why he took the path he did in life. Teddy explains how he ended up boxing under legendary trainer Cus D'Amato, and how Cus guided Teddy towards becoming a trainer himself. Teddy then shares stories of training kids in the Catskills, taking them to unsanctioned amateur fights in the Bronx, and the lessons he learned from boxing and his father about personal responsibility, managing fear, overcoming resistance, and what is means to be a man. “The hero and the coward both feel the same thing," Cus D'Amato said. "But the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs. It's the same thing, fear, but it's what you do with it that matters." What are you doing with your fear? This episode is brought to you by Kettle & Fire. In this episode, Reemus takes over your mind, and helps you kick-start your own positive affirmations. Like how Cus D'Amato would go through affirmations with Mike Tyson to transform his self-belief and self-perception, Reemus does the same for you with powerful statements. Like Ali suggested, if you want to be a winner, you must talk, walk, and think like one. The first step is changing that little voice in your head so it is automatically positive. Stop thinking you are average. Open your eyes (and mind) and realise that you are a winner!
Cus has been described as a gentle old soul, but he was an old warrior who wanted once to dominate and monopolize the sport of boxing. Story of perhaps the greatest boxing trainer/manager and a combat psychology genius told by his greatest pupil. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ogb/support
When Mike Tyson rocketed onto the scene in the mid-1980s he had a support system that included mentor and father-figure Cus D'Amato, co-managers Jim Jacobs and Bill Cayton, trainer Kevin Rooney and Steve Lott. Lott had already been in the boxing business a decade, working closely with Jacobs and Cayton. He went on to forge a close friendship with Tyson, who as the champion of the world would sometimes sleep on Lott's couch. They have been in and out of contact in subsequent years, but there is no one with a better understanding of the highs and lows of Mike Tyson in the 1980s than Steve Lott.
Recent International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Teddy Atlas joins Jim Rome for Episode 63. Atlas discusses the impact his father, Dr. Theodore Atlas, had on his life, the knife fight that almost killed him, learning from legendary trainer Cus D'Amato, Mike Tyson's career, and his return to training fighters. (Plus, another batch of listener voicemails.)
In November 1986, aged just 20, Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight boxing champion of all time. Tyson came from a troubled upbringing in New York and only found a direction in life when he met the legendary trainer, Cus D'Amato. But, after D'Amato's death, Tyson's career was marred by a rape conviction and an ongoing battle with drink and drugs. He talks to the BBC Boxing Correspondent, Mike Costello. Ej and Lisa are fresh off the Olympic scene and back with regularly scheduled programming again. Today we have Dr Scott Weiss, who co-authored the Cus D'Amoto Story in the book 'Confusing the Enemy' and he will come on to discuss the process and history of Boxing. Secondly, Ana Parsons & Edelyn Okano are the creators behind "Jeremy Lin, the unauthorized musical" and will be discussing how and why they are doing it.
Teddy Atlas talks about boxing and his extensive charity work in this interview with Fight News Unlimited's "Rabble Rousin'" Rich Bergeron. Atlas was once a protege of the late, great Cus D'Amato and worked with the famous trainer during Mike Tyson's early years as a boxer. Since then, Atlas has worked in a few other pro boxing camps training fighters like Michael Moorer, Donny Lalonde, and Alexander Povetkin. He's also been able to work with various professional football players and football teams, providing both inspirational advice and strength and conditioning tips to go along with some rudimentary boxing clinics. Atlas is perhaps most well known for his extensive boxing analysis and commentary, mainly for ESPN. Atlas is a fixture on Friday Night Fights and Wednesday Night Fights broadcasts on the network, which he joined in 1998. Prior to joining ESPN, Atlas served as ringside analyst for Showtime, ABC Wide World of Sports, and HBO radio broadcasts. He also is well-known for his commentary for Olympic boxing. Atlas discusses his charity work at length in this interview, inspired by his father Dr. Theodore Atlas. The foundation he started bears his father's name and operates under some of the same selfless principles his father lived by.
