Money, money, money, money…MO-NEY! The Money with Katie Show host Katie Gatti Tassin here to talk with JVN all about how we can beat capitalism, get ahead, and get informed about the system that we're all operating in - whether we like it or not! Katie's new book Rich Girl Nation is out now. Money with Katie was founded in 2020 by Katie Gatti Tassin to document everything she learned about personal finance on her journey to financial independence. As a former public relations major in corporate America with a penchant for swiping her Discover card, her obsession about personal finance hit her hard out of left field — and as she watched her net worth grow in tandem with her financial literacy, she realized just how valuable the information was. Sharing it with others became an obsession. She left her full-time job at the end of 2021 to devote all of her energy to building this business, and Money with Katie was acquired by Morning Brew in 2022. What happens when you mix financial strategy with a healthy dose of cultural commentary? You get Rich Girl Nation. This week on The Stacking Benjamins Show, Joe Saul-Sehy and OG are joined by Katie Gatti Tassin, the powerhouse behind Money with Katie and author of the new book Rich Girl Nation. Together, they unravel the sneaky ways consumerism shows up in our lives—from pricey trends to status-signaling spending—and how it messes with our wallets. Katie dives into the “hot girl hamster wheel” of overspending, the wage gap, and why negotiating your salary (without flinching) is one of the best financial moves you can make. She also offers sharp, tactical advice on job-hopping for higher pay and automating your money to avoid lifestyle creep. Meanwhile, the crew throws in real-life stories, from Cybertruck depreciation to celebrating financial independence in more ways than one. And of course, Doug drops in with a trivia twist that keeps things weird—because it wouldn't be the basement without a little curveball.
Katie Gatti Tassin had the job, the paycheck, and the potential. But two weeks after every payday, she was broke again. And that's when she realized: something had to change. What started as a personal audit of her spending (her beauty budget was 10% of her income!) turned into Money with Katie, a financial education platform that's now helping millions of women take control of their money and retire on their own terms. We're talking with Katie about her new book, Rich Girl Nation: Taking Control of Our Financial Futures, and her mission to help women, especially Gen Z and young Millennials, rethink the traditional rules of work, wealth, and independence. … Does more financial confidence sound good to you, then you might want to try:

Katie provides fresh personal finance advice with a unique outlook, coupled with deep, self-taught knowledge. Before founding Money with Katie in 2020, she worked professionally in marketing and user experience design for Southwest Airlines, Dell Technologies, and Meta. She's the author of Rich Girl Nation: Taking Charge of Our Financial Futures. Notes: If you're not curious about it, you're not going to give it your all. But if you are, you can become relentless. Chase your curiosity and obsessions with great rigor. That passion and love for whatever the thing is can lead to big opportunities in your life. Do you want 100% of a grape or 25% of a watermelon? Advice Katie got when she was considering accepting the offer to be acquired by Morning Brew. The importance of having a coach. Katie talked about the life-changing impact her coach, Elizabeth, has had on her. Ambitious, motivated people who have high standards need help, too. In fact, maybe as much as anyone. It's worth it to invest in yourself and find a person to talk with 1 on 1. Parents - High expectations, straight A's or bust. Driven, hard to turn it off. The Morning Brew acquisition - Money with Katie. Worked at Meta and did Money with Katie at the same time. Left for the acquisition. Austin Rief (CEO) DM'd her on Twitter and made an offer during their first 30-minute conversation. Big lesson - Your IP is everything. Book Dedication - “To the anonymous guy who 'works in finance' that used to relentlessly comment on my nascent website in 2018, urging me to quit writing about money and 'keep it to myself. I hope you're well." Acknowledgments - “Mom, for all those quiet days spent sitting on the floor of the Lents branch library or wandering the stacks at Barnes & Noble. Dad, for spending your time after work at the kitchen table with me every time my homework involved numbers, and for being my number one fan.” How much money do you need to be financially free? Katie breaks down the 4% rule, why it works, and how it can be personalized and optimized for each person's retirement needs. High Standards Can Be a Double-Edged Sword – "I am an incredibly driven person because of the people who raised me... But I also have a really hard time with turning it off. I can become very narrow-minded and obsessive about the things that I'm doing." Turn Critics Into Fuel – Katie dedicated her book to an anonymous finance professional who told her to "quit writing about money" and "keep it to herself." Sometimes the best fuel comes from those who doubt you. Money Transparency in Families Creates Advantages – Katie's parents openly discussed finances, including sharing their income. "I never really thought of it as something that was taboo... made it a lot easier for me now as an adult." The Power of Life Coaching for Entrepreneurs – After initial skepticism, Katie found a life coach who told her, "You are way too in your head. You are way too concerned with the minutia. You don't even know where you wanna go yet." Intellectual Property is Everything in Negotiations – "Your intellectual property is the most valuable thing that you are negotiating over... The primary value of the thing that I'm spending 60 hours a week working on needs to be accruing to me." The 25x Rule for Financial Freedom – Based on the 4% withdrawal rule: "Once you have accumulated 25 times your annual spending... You should theoretically be able to use 4% of that amount every year, withdraw it, and live on it." Marriage Changes Everything Financially – "Marriage is the most legally significant thing you will do in your life other than die, and you don't get so much as a leaflet about how your rights have just changed." Prenups Aren't About Distrust – They're about legal protection, especially for anyone who might leave the workforce. "If you spend decades out of the workforce... You need to ensure that if your partnership ends someday... You will have a certain amount of income." Desire Drives Excellence – "If you're not curious about it, you are not going to give it your all... There is such a difference in outcomes. If I am really into something that I'm working on, it's gonna be second to none."

Katie Gatti Tassin, the creator of the Money with Katie Podcast, joins Carl to explore the personal and philosophical sides of money. Katie shares her journey from launching a personal finance blog to selling it to Morning Brew, and how that experience reshaped her views on wealth, work, and independence. Together, they dive into Katie's early memories of money, the financial habits instilled by her parents, and the emotional weight of financial decisions—like buying a luxury car and the conflicted feelings that followed. She opens up about her evolving perspective on financial success, the tension between abundance and scarcity mindsets, and the reality of scaling up lifestyle expenses while maintaining financial security. Carl and Katie also tackle systemic economic issues, including the illusion of meritocracy, and how shifting personal and societal financial narratives could lead to a more equitable future. —----------------------------- For more on Katie visit https://moneywithkatie.com/ Pre-Order her new book Rich Girl Nation: https://moneywithkatie.com/rich-girl-nation —----------------------------- Follow 50 Fires on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/50firespod/ Please direct business inquires to: blindnilaudio@magnolia.com Cover Art: Josh Passler - TheFinArtist.com Music Credits: Alexandra Woodward / Rabbit Reggae / courtesy of www.epidemicsound.com Cody Francis / Wherever You're Going / courtesy of www.epidemicsound.com Learn more about your ad choices.

This week Logan Gatti joined Robert to talk about the Louisville Democratic Party, and the pair talked about the news of the week.
"Understanding financial independence was a game changer for me.” Financial expert Katie Gatti from "Money with Katie” joins me as we discuss personal finance and the concept of financial independence. She makes a compelling argument against hoarding large sums in savings accounts without a clear purpose, something that too many of us are guilty of. Instead, she advocates for making your money work for you through investments. Now, I know the idea of investing can be daunting, especially with all the conflicting advice out there. But Katie breaks it down in a way that is both practical and relatable, emphasizing the power of automation to take the guesswork out of investing. What really struck me was her journey from corporate America to full-time entrepreneurship. Katie didn't just dabble in personal finance—she immersed herself, turning what began as a side project into a thriving business acquired by Morning Brew. We also explored her profound thoughts on societal expectations, particularly around traditional domestic roles versus modern career-driven lifestyles. Tune in if you want to learn how to become financially independent in today's market. #541: Ever wondered if you're making the right choice between a Traditional and Roth 401(k)? You're not alone. In this episode, Katie Gatti Tassin, host of MorningBrew's Money with Katie podcast, joins us to tackle this common retirement savings dilemma. We deep-dive into the debate between using Traditional vs. Roth 401(k) accounts for retirement savings, in the context of: Future tax rates Tax complexities for small business owners and high earners Social Security uncertainty Stock-based compensation Incentives for business owners vs. employees Katie explains her strategy for maximizing retirement savings while minimizing taxes. She suggests that for some people in higher tax brackets, maxing out a traditional 401(k) and then investing the tax savings elsewhere might be the way to go. But as we dig deeper, it becomes clear that there's no one-size-fits-all answer. We explore the Traditional vs Roth question, discussing how your current income and expected retirement spending can affect your choices. It's not just about the math, though. The unpredictability of future tax rates and policies adds another layer of complexity to the decision. Social Security plays a major role, as well. We discuss its current funding situation and the challenges it might face in the future. This leads to a fascinating discussion about how AI might impact future costs and lifestyles. Could things actually get cheaper in the future? Taxes for high earners and small business owners is another focus. We break down some misconceptions about who falls into high tax brackets. It's not always as simple as it seems. Stock-based compensation is another hot topic. We discuss how it affects corporate decision-making and the wider economy. This leads to an interesting comparison of the incentives for business owners versus employees. Throughout the episode, we keep coming back to one key point: no matter which type of account you choose, the most important thing is to contribute as much as you can. Your contribution amount has a bigger impact on your retirement savings than the type of account you use. By the end of this interview, you'll have a better understanding of the factors that go into choosing between a Traditional and Roth 401(k). More importantly, you'll see how this decision fits into the bigger picture of retirement planning and overall financial health.
