Join me for a conversation with Dr. Seulghee Lee (Assistant Professor of African American Studies and English, University of South Carolina) about his recently published book, Other Lovings: An AfroAsian American Theory of Life (Ohio State UP, 2025). Some topics of our discussion include Adrian Tomine's graphic novel Shortcomings (2007), Gayl Jones' novella Corregidora (1975), and the cultural phenomenon of "Linsanity" and the lasting impact of NBA player Jeremy Lin's rise to fame. In Other Lovings, Seulghee Lee traces the presence and plenitude of love embedded in Black and Asian American literatures and cultures to reveal their irreducible power to cohere minoritarian social life. Bringing together Black studies, Asian American studies, affect theory, critical theory, and queer of color critique, Lee examines the bonds of love in works by Amiri Baraka, Audre Lorde, David Henry Hwang, Gayl Jones, Fred Moten, Adrian Tomine, and Charles Yu. He attends to the ontological force of love in popular culture, investigating Asian American hip-hop and sport through readings of G Yamazawa, Year of the Ox, and Jeremy Lin, as well as in Black public culture through bell hooks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Cornel West. By assessing love's positive function in these works, Lee argues against critical regimes, such as Afropessimism and racial melancholia, that center negativity. In revealing what Black and Asian American traditions share in their positive configurations of being and collectivity, and in their responses to the overarching logic of white supremacy, Other Lovings suggests possibilities for thinking beyond sociological opposition and historical difference and toward political coalition and cultural affinity. Ultimately, Other Lovings argues for a counter-ontology of love—its felt presence, its relational possibilities, and its lived practices. Hour 1 MLB's opening day was marred by app streaming issues, overshadowing Juan Soto's crucial ninth-inning strikeout for the Mets. Conversely, the Yankees enjoyed a smoother start with Austin Wells's early home run and a successful, albeit eventful, outing from Devin Williams. Off-air drama ensued as Boomer recounted a parking dispute with C-Mac, who later defended himself. C-Lo finally delivered his update, featuring Keith McPherson's hoarse post-game reaction to the Yankees and Evan Roberts's critique of Soto's performance on the Rico Brogna podcast. Hour 2 A late-night caller sparked Gio's contemplation about Juan Soto's ninth-inning strikeout, suggesting it stemmed from a lack of faith in Pete Alonso. Boomer's mid-game texts to Ron Darling drew Gio's curiosity about Gary Cohen's potential feelings. C-Lo's update highlighted Devin Williams's shaky Yankees debut, Dave Sims's subway commute, and BT and Sal's Aaron Boone interview, where they debated Judge's batting order. The focus returned to Soto's crucial at-bat and post-game comments, followed by Carlos Mendoza's analysis. A brief detour covered Texas Tech's Elite 8 appearance. Finally, Gio's upcoming bartending gig and new CBS Sports sneakers led to a discussion about baseball's "needle movers," with Boomer excluding Soto, while Gio strongly disagreed. Hour 3 Boomer's MLB "needle movers" list sparked heated debate, with callers criticizing the omission of Juan Soto and even Derek Jeter. Gio emphasized Soto's impact, citing increased Mets ticket sales. The hour concluded with discussion of Fox canceling Derek Jeter's Pat McAfee interview, seemingly due to network rivalry, and a caller's inquiry about temporary "needle movers" like Jeremy Lin. Hour 4 The Knicks' playoff potential took center stage, with Boomer questioning their ability to compete against top teams like Boston. April's sports excitement was debated against October's, leading to a tangent on NFL kickoffs and comparisons of Shedeur Sanders to Dak Prescott. Deion Sanders's search for a team criticizing his son was mentioned, with Josina Anderson hinting at a "top 7 drafting team." C-Lo's final update featured Yankees highlights and Keith McPherson's hoarse post-game commentary, followed by Howie Rose's call of Soto's strikeout. Gio's CBS Sports sneaker display was highlighted as the Moment of the Day. The show concluded with a discussion of MLB app streaming issues and the cost of SNY.

A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2024

When my grandson was playing Upward basketball as a boy I told him about Jeremy Lin who at that time was lighting up the scoreboard for the New York Knicks. Now, he was not your typical professional basketball star, that's for sure. He was a Harvard grad. He was Asian-American. He was refreshingly humble. Oh, and you could tell that he unashamedly loved Jesus. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Playing for Jesus" Now, he actually wore a bracelet that revealed where his heart was. It said, "For Jesus' name I play." Yeah, he played on the New York Knicks, but he played for Jesus. Which suggested a pretty good self-exam question to be asking, even for a sports klutz like me, "Who do I play for?" Now, that probing question demands that I stop and take stock on two fronts: whose glory am I playing for and whose approval am I playing for? Well, our word for today from the Word of God in 1 Corinthians 10:31 lays it down straight on the glory issue. It says, "whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." And in Isaiah 42:8 it says, "I am the Lord; that is My name! I will not give My glory to another..." Boy, you don't want to mess with that! So how much of what I do is to get people to notice me; to give me strokes? That's not a question any of us can answer once and for all. We've got to answer it before every "game." Can I honestly say it's "for Jesus' name I play", that I want Him to get all the attention, all the credit? At the moment I catch myself thinking, "Hey, ain't I somethin'!" I've got to aim that spotlight toward heaven and say, "No! Isn't He somethin'!" The alternative is to hijack God's glory. And He just isn't going to let that happen. But it's not just "whose glory?" that is the issue. There's the whole "whose approval?" thing. See, I'm a firstborn child, but I'm otherwise normal. And they say we oldest kids grow up wanting to please mom and dad, and we get real good at it. And soon, well we can intuitively figure out what it will take to please a teacher, or a boss, or friends, or people in general. We're not alone, of course, in being people-pleasers, but we're pretty good at it. Now, it's easy to become an approval junkie, playing to get people to like you, to validate you. But ultimately, it's a life of slavery. It's a life of fear. You become, to a large extent, shaped and defined by other people's expectations - a slave. Oh, and then there's the fear thing: fear of rejection, fear of not being liked, which will, at some point, keep you from doing the right thing. People-pleasing becomes the gateway drug to sinful compromise of the truth, your integrity, your purity, your convictions, your Savior's name. It's a price that's too high to pay. The Bible nails it again, "Fear of man will prove to be a snare" (Proverbs 29:25). The Bible writer, Paul, asks disturbingly: "Am I trying to win the approval of men or of God? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ" (Galatians 1:10). Ouch! And then, listen to Jeremiah, "Should you then seek great things for yourself? Seek them not" (Jeremiah 45:5). Now, if Jeremy Lin, that former NBA player, was playing for Jesus, then he was a free man. Free from the dead-end street of stealing God's glory; free from the bondage and insecurity of trying to make everybody happy. Life is honestly a whole lot less confusing and conflicted when you've got only one person to please - the Person who loves you unconditionally, unendingly, unsparingly. Jesus, who abandoned His glory in heaven and the acclaim of angels to rescue you and me. I'll never forget the lesson I learned the day that my young son was helping me with yard work. I was mowing, and he was doing the clipping after me. And at one point, I kind of flashed a smile his way. And a few minutes later, he came over and he shouted above all the mower noise, "Daddy, could you please do that again?" I turned down the mower and I said, "Do what again, son?" "Could you just smile at me again, Daddy? It's your smile that keeps me going." That's what I want. I want to live for one thing - my Father's smile.

Sean Marks took over one of the worst franchises in sports. Within a few years, he orchestrated the “clean sweep” and was heralded as one of the greatest GMs in basketball. When the players involved in that clean sweep then tried to get Marks fired a mere 2 years later, he suddenly became a complete joke, an obvious disaster, and the sole reason why the Nets suck. In all this hyperbole, one question is consistently obscured: is Sean Marks actually a good GM?  In this episode we try to answer that question by taking a long, hard look at the man's record, from the Jeremy Lin signing to the Noah Clowney draft pick. We leave no stone unturned.  You'll have to listen to discover the verdict.

Jerry is here for his first update of the day and has all the sound from DeVito and the Giants from last night. ‘Go out there and rip that son of a bitch'- That's the message Brian Daboll had for DeVito. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman were loving the agent, ‘kisses everywhere'. It's a long shot but the Giants are still in the hunt. The Titans came back and beat the Dolphins in the other Monday night game. Tyreek Hill left the game with an ankle injury. The Dolphins look lost when he's not in the game. Jerry went around the NBA last night. Stephen A. Smith said Zion Williamson looks fat. Shannon Sharpe also talked about his weight saying his stomach and ass are going in two different directions. It's Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy right now.  Hour 2 Gio was dead wrong about the Giants last year with Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley. But this year he was still backing Brian Daboll when everything seemed to be falling apart. Credit to Daboll is being lost in the DeVito craze as he's won 3 straight games with a third string QB. We also talked about the relationship  between Daboll and Wink Martindale. Winning fixes a lot of things. Boomer said you have to have coaches who bring energy and both those guys do that. We also talked about the AFC playoff picture. What's worse, being called a ‘meat head' or a ‘neanderthal'? Jerry is here for another update and starts with some of the big plays from last night. Peyton Manning called his agent ‘slimy'. The Dolphins were up by 14 with 4 minutes to go and they lost to the Titans. In the final segment of the hour, we took calls on DeVito's performance last night. Gio said there are not a lot of coaches that could have gotten him ready so quickly as Daboll did.  Hour 3 The Giants still have to play the Eagles twice, so running the table will be a rough road for them. But they can keep it going this weekend as they go into New Orleans. Right now the spread has the Saints as 5 ½ point favorites. Al wanted to get Tommy DeVito out to B&G live in Huntington. Jerry returns for an update but first Boomer has some stats about receivers. Jerry has audio of the game winning FG for the Giants last night. The Dolphins blew a 14 point lead late in the fourth quarter. Patrick Mahomes went on sports radio in KC and apologized for the way he behaved after the game. Shohei Ohtani is deferring $68 of his $70 million  a year. Jerry has a montage of clips from Al & Eddie on the podcast talking about pee in Al's underwear. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer said Ohtani is trying to pay the least amount of tax possible in California and when he eventually leaves the state. Tommy DeVito's dad is doing commercials now for Peerless Boilers on the Giants pre-game show.  Hour 4 The Giants have a great shot at keeping the Tommy DeVito train rolling as they head to New Orleans on Sunday. Boomer said each game is totally different. Now DeVito has to go on the road, in a dome and the Saints are desperate. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with the sounds of last night's Giants win over the Packers, their third straight. We somehow got into Boomer & Gio having dinner in a restaurant that was in the street in NYC. The Dolphins had a 14 point lead with 4 minutes to go and somehow lost to the Titans. Tyreek Hill went out in the first quarter and he said his wife texted him to get his ass back into the game. Tommy DeVito's agent, Sean Stellato, called in to talk about last night's game. He said his nickname is not ‘slimy' as Peyton and Eli said last night. The Moment of the Day involves Al's bladder issues.
