Joined today by former Light Heavyweight Champion of the world, "The Pittsburgh Kid" Paul Spadfora. Paul and I talk about his upcoming trip to Italy, how he proposed to his fiancé, and what Pittsburgh food he misses the most. We discuss him training his son, Geno, the similarities and differences with them and his biggest gripe with how younger boxers are trained today. We chat about him dropping out of school in 9th grade, boxing at 11 years old, meeting his mentor PK and hear an insane story about a high speed car chase that led to Paul getting shot at 16 years old. Paul analyzes the current state of boxing, his thoughts on Crawford, Fury fighting Francis and why he thinks Tyson is the greatest heavyweight of all time. He tells us about his amateur career, turning pro and that legendary night when he beat Cardona for the belt. We hear about how his life changed after winning the title, why he couldn't say no to his childhood friends and the reason he stayed in Pittsburgh so long. He shares why he believes he never got the dream matchup against Gatti, being trained by Emanuel Steward, and being a student of the sweet science. Paul also lets us know about the book being written about him that is coming out in October, still battling his demons and the HOPE he provides people battling addiction. All this plus texting with Roy Jones, when he's going back to the gym and his favorite TV shows. Jason Quigley is about to begin The Rebuild – and who better than Andy Lee to guide him back towards the top? After all, Lee knows all about The Rocky Road from world title contender to forgotten fighter. He put every drop of blood, sweat and tears into his career to earn himself a crack at the WBC world middleweight title in 2012 but it all went wrong on a sweltering summer night in El Paso against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He then had to deal with the devastation of losing his beloved trainer and mentor, Emanuel Steward, and look for somewhere to start again from scratch. Lee found a new coach in Adam Booth and, two and a half years later, pulled off an unforgettable victory when he stopped Matt Korobov in Las Vegas to win the WBO world middleweight belt. Luckily for Quigley, he is not starting from scratch. Lee showed it can be done. In his last outing, Quigley was defeated by Demetrius Andrade for the WBO belt Lee previously held but it was another Irish boxing world title night where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Lee had visa issues and couldn't attend. And Quigley's game-plan – to feel his way into the fight and figure out his man – went kerplunk when he suffered a broken jaw in the very first round. He's been clipped since – first by an O'Neills Size 5 – and knows he's good to go. The comeback date has been secured – April 1 at the National Stadium – and the opponent will be Kim Poulsen of Denmark. The Rebuild has begun, as both Quigley and Lee tell Kevin Byrne following a lively press conference at the National Stadium. Kev also catches up with Limerick boxing brothers Paddy and Edward Donovan, who fill him in on their sparring sessions at home and abroad, and Lanzarote-based former Irish pro Jonathan O'Brien, who's now coaching fighters over there. He bemoans the recent state of Dublin boxing but, with a new partnership in Elite Sheer on the scene for the Quigley comeback (and pro debut in Ireland), as well as a Waterford card and a Katie Taylor homecoming on the horizon, there's reason to be cheerful for fight fans in the starved south. Gerry Coyle is best known in Irish boxing as the figurehead of Geesala BC, from the ‘Land of the Salty Breeze', and father of former world-rated contender Henry Coyle. But his own father, Henry Coyle, has a notable story too. As Gerry says, ‘my son Henry fought for Ireland with gloves after my dad Henry fought for Ireland with guns'. Gerry's spent over 20 years preparing a new book entitled ‘Henry Coyle – A Forgotten Freedom Fighter' which unearths the untold story of his father's escapades during the War of Independence and Civil War. Sentenced to penal servitude in Scotland after being caught with the largest quantity of explosives ever found in the UK, he carried Michael Collins' coffin after his assassination and later served as a TD but that spell was short-lived. Gerry's book tells his tale for the first time while in this episode of The Rocky Road with Kevin Byrne, the Mayo man also reminisces about the friends he's met through boxing and why the sport matters so much, nights in New York alongside Emanuel Steward and Jake LaMotta and a trip to Cuba to reunite legendary boxing coach Nicholas Cruz with his mother. And, listen, lots more besides. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Former IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron fought the likes of Canelo, Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez and Antonio Margarito (twice), and he almost added to that, being one fight away from contests against Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and countryman Miguel Cotto. Cintron's mother died of cancer when he was just 10, and his father died of a heart attack three years later. He managed to lose himself in combat sports; first wrestling, then boxing. The outspoken Cintron had a hard career. He sparred Arturo Gatti, Bernard Hopkins and many more, was a Kronk stalwart alongside Andy Lee and Johnathon Banks under Emanuel Steward but he's thriving in retirement, studying to be a radiographer, spending time with his family and playing golf.
Former cruiserweight contender Johnathan Banks had his career fast-tracked in the aftermath of Emanuel Steward's death. Banks was still an active fighter when his beloved coach passed away but he was promptly named trainer of heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and his path changed. As a boxer, Banks was cruiser who boxed at heavyweight and he fought the likes of Seth Mitchell, Antonio Tarver, Travis Walker and Tomasz Adamek. He has wonderful experiences to share having been around the Klitschko brothers and on the road with Steward, he talks working with middleweight great Gennady Golovkin today and explains why his future is about giving back, to communities and individuals, through boxing.
World-class trainer & former world champion Johnathon Banks surprised Cynthia and Jeandra in studio to chat. Banks talks about how the late-great hall-of-fame trainer of Kronk Boxing Emanuel Steward impacted his life as a father figure, trainer, mentor and friend, how Steward appointed Banks to become former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko head trainer. Banks also tells BWBSP how Gennadiy Golovkin needs to fight Canelo in the trilogy, explains how Anthony Joshua can possibly outbox Oleksandr Usyk in their highly-anticipated rematch. Joseph Donofrio : "As a young Golden Glove fighter, the Sweet Science was in my bloodstream at an early age. After working on various small boxing shows in the 1980's, I decided to move forward reintroducing myself to the next level of promoting. I joined forces with Emanuel Steward in the mid 1990's promoting shows in various venues in Southeastern Michigan. The Palace was always an outstanding venue, a fighters dream to perform in front of thousands of spectators in the “Big House” After a few years of collaboration with Emanuel Steward, he returned to his roots of being one of the best trainers in the world and I took the helm as a sole promoter. After a 20 year run at The Palace, the sudden closure brought me to The Joe Louis Arena, The Fillmore, The Dow Event Center, The Quicken Loans Arena, The Tropicana in Atlantic City and more recently in cooperation with Harley Davidson. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus have placed all events on hold. In the not too distant future, “THE FIGHT BOSS” Donofrio Entertainment and The Impact Fight League will be back in full swing while negotiations coupled with Little Caesars Arena will continue."
“Bring your son in and I will make him a world champion.” A legendary boxing trainer, the late great Emanuel Steward, made that bold prediction years ago in a conversation with the father of Minnesota boxer Colton Warner. On October 22 in Hinckley, the younger Warner will try to move a step closer to world title contention as he takes on Blaine Perrigo in a heavyweight showdown. Warner is 2-0 heading into the fight. In the following interview, Warner talks about what it was like training and sparring with heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, and working with elite trainer SugarHill Steward, nephew of Emanuel. He also takes a deep dive into the current state of the heavyweight division, among other topics. Intro music: “Ali Shuffle,” by the Toler/Townsend Band. Special thanks to Deb Toler. He held the world heavyweight championship twice, including the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and Ring magazine titles. A strategic and intelligent boxer, Klitschko is considered to be one of the best heavyweight champions of all time. He was known for his exceptional knockout power, using a strong jab, straight right hand and left hook, as well as great footwork and mobility, unusual for boxers of his size. As an amateur, Klitschko represented Ukraine at the 1996 Olympics, winning a gold medal in the super-heavyweight division. After turning professional later that year, he defeated Chris Byrd in 2000 to win the WBO heavyweight title. Klitschko's first reign as champion ended in an upset knockout loss to Corrie Sanders in 2003, which was followed by another upset knockout loss to Lamon Brewster in 2004. It was during this time that Klitschko hired Emanuel Steward as his trainer, which began an eight-year partnership that lasted until Steward's death in 2012. In particular, Steward was credited with Klitschko's transition from an aggressive puncher to a more defensively-oriented boxer, much as he had done with Lennox Lewis in 1995 to 2003. If they say follow in your families footsteps and you can't go wrong, then everything must be going so right for Detroit native Javan "Sugar Hill" Steward. After seeing his uncle and the late great Emanuel "Manny" Steward guide the likes of Tommy Hearns, Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko to world honours, his nephew is now following in the Kronk Gym Hall of Fame trainer's footsteps. After masterminding Tyson Fury to a dominant and "Kronk Style" victory over Deontay Wilder (almost reminiscent of Lennox dispatching Michael Grant in the 90's), everyone was talking about how Sugar Hill is now bringing the famous Kronk Boxing style back to the forefront.I sat down with Sugar Hill to talk about growing up with Manny Steward, witnessing the tragedy of Adonis Stevenson and what it felt like guiding Tyson Fury to his WBC World Heavyweight Title Win.Don't forget to subscribe to ‘The Doctor Uz Podcast' on;Spotify- https://tinyurl.com/ybh38ftaITunes- https://tinyurl.com/ycm6zrrdYouTube- https://tinyurl.com/ya26b3r5To find out more, visit us on www.instagram.com/doctoruzpodcast or www.facebook.com/doctoruzpodcast. Larry Merchant was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009. For 35 years he was the conscience of HBO Boxing, working alongside the likes of George Foreman, Gil Clancy, Jim Lampley and Emanuel Steward. But he's been in boxing far longer. Here, Larry recalls covering his first major fight, Sugar Ray Robinson against Carmen Basilio in 1957, being an early investor in Joe Frazier's journey, interviewing Sonny Liston, flying to Zaire with Muhammad Ali, falling out with some of boxing's big guns and much, much more. His iconic post-fight interviews with the likes of Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins have become part of boxing folklore, along with the infamous night he told Floyd Mayweather, "If I was 50 years younger I'd kick your ass."
Former WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee reached the top when he won the world crown against Matvey Korobov in Las Vegas. Lee's journey saw him go from Olympic heartbreak as Ireland's sole representative at the 2004 Games to big things in the USA. He was taken under the wing of Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward and became a star of the famous Kronk Gym in Detroit. He rose fast, but was stunned in a defeat to Bryan Vera that saw him question everything. He fought his way back. There were trials and tribulations. Here, he lets you into his uncertainty, while being behind the scenes at the Kronk and on the road in Klitschko training camps. Then came the big nights, wins against John Jackson, Craig McEwan, Korobov and more and he joined forces with one of Britain's leading trainers, Adam Booth. As the champion, he faced Peter Quillin before losing his crown to Billy Joe Saunders. Then came an acceptance that it was over. He began his new life as a trainer, working with the likes of Paddy Donovan and Jay Quigley and he was a key part of Tyson Fury's rematch win over Deontay Wilder.
Anthony Sims Jr. joined us for episode 11 (Dec. 2018) of Against the Ropes. We discussed his rough upbringing, his father's suicide, moving with the Mayweathers in Las Vegas, being stuck in a contract with Don King, being trained by Emanuel Steward, mental health awareness and much more! For 22 years Claude Abrams worked on the weekly boxing magazine Boxing News, serving more than 10 years as editor. He was hired by his predecessor Harry Mullan and then subsequently hired his successor, Tris Dixon. In between, he covered huge fights, was at the small halls and was exposed to things only a BN editor is exposed to; from rowing with promoters, to going to Azumah Nelson's house, to sparring with Naseem Hamed and taking private jets with Emanuel Steward and then having dinner with Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns. He was also ringside for some of the best fighters of all time, including Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Roy Jones, Floyd Mayweather, Evander Holyfield, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and many more. When he left BN, he went 'cold turkey' and travelled the world. But he dusted off plenty of war stories for this incredible journey down memory lane.
Former two-weight world champion Joey Gamache is becoming one of the sport's in demand trainers. He recently guided Otto Wallin through a big step-up as he pushed Tyson Fury hard during their bloody Las Vegas fight but it's no surprise Gamache is now a coach. He's learned from the likes of Teddy Atlas, Emanuel Steward, Jimmy Glenn and many others. He fought the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez, Chil-Sun Jun, Jerry Ngobeni, Orzubek Nazarov and Tony Lopez racking up a career record of 55 wins and four losses. Many felt his time as a fighter was defined by his brutal two-round loss to Arturo Gatti, the debatable weight increase Gatti made and the decade-long legal mess that followed but that's doing Gamache a disservice. Gamache has had to fight demons. He's been a bad place but now things are good. Here, in his own words, he tells his story.
Sheffield heavyweight Richard Towers sparred some of the best of his era, the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, David Haye, Tyson Fury, Alexander Povetkin and Deontay Wilder. In amassing a 15-1 (12) record before retiring in 2014, he learned from the likes of Brendan Ingle, Emanuel Steward and Adam Booth. But before boxing, he was part of a criminal underworld that saw him serve the best part of a decade in prison, rubbing shoulders with some of Britain's most dangerous and infamous criminals. Here, in a part-boxing/part-true crime interview, Towers reflects on both lives.

Klitschjo had Joshua down in the fight and in serious trouble, but the British star rallied down the stretch to put away the veteran in the eleventh round.A rematch was initially set for the fall of the same year, but then Klitschko announced his retirement. For over a year on social media, he's been dropping hints of a comeback since hanging up the gloves.Promoter Tom Loeffler, who worked closely with Klitschko throughout his career, would like to see him face former sparring partner Deontay Wilder, who holds the WBC heavyweight title. Loeffler has no idea if Klitschko will ultimately decide to come back at this point.“He had such a good championship run, that a lot of people want to see him back in the ring,” Loeffler told Sirius XM Boxing. “A company is offering him a lot of money to come back. He’s one of those brands that fans want to see him come back. I’d like to see him come back.“I don’t know whether he is content with what he’s accomplished in his career already. You know, his brother Vitali was in the Hall of Fame last year and is the mayor of Kiev. And Wladimir has had one of the most storied championship runs.“It will be his decision. If it makes sense, and he’s been posting videos and photos showing the bug is still somewhere in the back of his head. He came so close when he knocked down Anthony Joshua [but] my personal opinion is I’d like to see him and Deontay Wilder .“Wladimir had such a great championship run and [coach] Emanuel Steward brought in the best sparring partners. He brought both Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder in as a sparring partners and now they are both champions. But I think it would be fireworks as Deontay has big punching power. That would be a tremendous fight. But that’s just my personal opinion. I’ll make that clear as I don’t want to get in trouble with him.”

“Irish” Micky Ward (born October 4, 1965) is a retired junior welterweight professional boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts. Micky is regarded as a working class hero, a blue-collar athlete who has overcome many difficulties in life and prevailed through determination and hard work. Ward won three New England Golden Gloves titles as an amateur before turning pro in 1985. He started off 14-0 in his professional career. Ward was known for his devastating left hook to the body and his ability to withstand punishment while waiting to land his trademark shot. A perennial underdog, he has been known to suddenly drop his opponent in the late rounds with a single shot to the body as he did against Emanuel Burton. After a 15-year pro career, the veteran Ward gained widespread fame in his May 18, 2002 fight with Arturo Gatti, broadcast live on HBO. In 2001, Ward´s battle with Emanuel Burton on July 13 had been named the Ring Magazine Fight of the Year and it served to set up the much-anticipated Ward-Gatti matchup. Ward-Gatti I saw both fighters withstand an amazing amount of punishment through 10 rounds of non-stop action. Ward, who dropped Gatti in the ninth round with a vicious left hook to the body, won the fight by majority decision.Ward-Gatti I was hailed as the “Fight of the Century” by boxing fans and writers, and Round 9 of that bout was called “The Round of the Century” by Emanuel Steward, who co-hosted the fight live on HBO. Ring Magazine named Ward-Gatti I the Fight of the Year for 2002. In their rematch, Gatti neutralized Ward´s body punching power by boxing and staying low. In the third round, Gatti knocked Ward to the canvas with a thundering overhand right which landed on Ward´s ear. Ward sprawled into the turnbuckle and stayed down for the mandatory 8 count. Nobody, especially Gatti (who after the fight called it “the hardest punch I´ve ever landed”) expected Ward to get up, never mind finish the fight. Commentators noted that if it had been any other fighter than Ward, the referee would have stopped the fight in the third round. Ward and Gatti had a third fight, on June 7, 2003. Despite dropping Gatti in round six, Ward lost by a ten round unanimous decision. Ward-Gatti 3 was named Fight of the Year for 2003 by Ring Magazine, which meant that Ward had earned that honor three times. Before his final fight with Gatti, Ward had announced his plans to retire after the fight. Micky captured both the WBU Intercontinental Light Welterweight title and the WBU Light Welterweight title. He also won the respect and admiration of many fans worldwide. The song “The Warrior´s Code” by the punk rock band Dropkick Murphys is dedicated to Micky Ward, and his photograph appears on the cover of the album. Ward´s life is chronicled in a biography by Bob Halloran entitled Irish Thunder: The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward. Micky Ward´s trilogy with Arturo Gatti would become the cover of the video game Fight Night Round 3, on the PlayStation 2 and XBOX versions of the game. And to top it all off The movie “The Fighter” staring Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward and Christian Bale as his half-brother, Dickie Eklund recounts Ward´s climb to fame.

Our conversation with Johnathon Banks who trains Wladimir Klitschko. Wladimir Klitschko fights 2012 - Banks stopped undefeated top contender Seth Mitchell, 25-1-1 (19KO’s), on Saturday, November 17, 2012 in the second round at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on HBO World Championship Boxing. Dropping Mitchell three times in the second round, referee Eddie Cotton called a halt to the destruction at the 2:37 mark of the second stanza. Wrote ESPN’s Dan Rafael, “Maybe some things are just meant to be. The script couldn’t have been better written for Banks in his major upset if a screenwriter had taken on the task. He was supposed to fight Mitchell in July, but the fight was postponed when Mitchell suffered a hand injury in his exciting third-round knockout win against Chazz Witherspoon in April and couldn’t be ready in time. It was around the time that the fight was postponed that the late Emanuel Steward, the Hall of Fame trainer and HBO announcer, first became ill. Steward had taken Banks under his wing when he was a 15-year-old amateur. Banks learned to box from Steward, spent time living with him and considered him a father figure. When Steward died in late October, his No. 1 fighter, heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, needed a trainer for his Sept. 10 title defense against Mariusz Wach and he turned to Banks, who had been in Klitschko’s training camps for years with Steward.” “So Banks was training Klitschko for his eventual win against Wach at the same time that he was preparing to fight Mitchell. While in Klitschko’s camp in Austria, Banks, 30, of Detroit, was doing four training sessions ...
