In Day 197, the final lesson of Orchot Tzaddikim, The Ways of the Righteous, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe brings the entire journey to its culmination. The author returns to the idea that the human being is an Olam Katan—a miniature world. The wonders of creation, both physical and spiritual, are reflected within the human being, and the soul itself reflects, in an infinitely limited way, attributes that point us toward the Creator. Just as the soul fills the body, sustains it, outlives it, sees without being seen, remains pure, and does not sleep, so Hashem fills, sustains, transcends, sees, and governs His universe.This realization should lead not to pride, but to humility, awe, gratitude, and responsibility. Rabbi Wolbe urges us to contemplate the extraordinary design of the human body—from our eyes and ears to our breath, bones, skin, and countless systems—and ask: Who gave me all of this? The more deeply we appreciate how much Hashem has invested in us, the more we understand that our lives carry purpose and obligation. Yirat Shamayim is not despair or fearfulness; it is the awareness that we have been entrusted with something extraordinarily precious.The entire book ultimately comes down to the words of Kohelet: “Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man.” After studying humility, arrogance, love, hatred, mercy, cruelty, happiness, jealousy, worry, repentance, Torah, and countless other middot, the final challenge is internal. It is no longer simply about how we appear to others, but about the private relationship between the individual and Hashem: Do I truly fear God? Is my relationship with Hashem where it should be? Inspiration must become action. Torah must change us.The conclusion takes on additional meaning as Rabbi Wolbe notes that the class coincides with his Hebrew birthday. He offers a heartfelt blessing to the TORCH community for health, happiness, gratitude, spiritual growth, and a genuine relationship with Hashem. He encourages each listener to view every new year of life as another opportunity to recommit to service, growth, and appreciation for the gift of another day.And, fittingly, the journey does not truly end. Abraham and Sarah arrive in Gerar, and Abraham tells everyone Sarah is his sister. She is, technically: his half-sister. She is also his wife (and one of the 4 most beautiful women ever to live). So when King Abimelech hears there's an unmarried woman in town, he has her brought to his palace. That night G-d appears to Abimelech in a dream with a warning: give her back or you die. By morning the orifices of his entire household are sealed shut, and he summons Abraham with one question, “What did you see, that you did this thing?”Abraham's answer is that there is no fear of G-d in this place. Rabbi Epstein calls it the crux of the whole passage, and he reads it as a direct challenge to a man who thinks of himself as righteous. If you decide for yourself what righteous means, you will never be righteous.Then comes a puzzle. This is the second time Sarah has been taken. Twenty-four years earlier, Pharaoh took her too, and G-d struck his household with a painful skin disease. Abimelech gets something else entirely. Same woman, same offense, different punishment. Why would G-d change it? Rabbi Epstein's answer comes from a teaching in the Talmud, and it changes how you read what happens to Abraham and Sarah next.

These days of Aseret Yemei Teshuvah are the greatest chesed from Hashem. Imagine a man is standing on trial and his life is on the line. Before the judge gives his final verdict, the man pleads, "Please give me a chance. Tell me what I could do to get off the hook." The judge tells him, "I won't give the final verdict for another week. During that time, if you come to me, admit what you did wrong, sincerely regret it, and tell me you won't do it again, then I'll let you off." What a chesed! His life is on the line, and the judge tells him exactly what to do to be forgiven. This is the incredible chesed that Hashem gives us during these days. He is telling us, "I want to let you off. I want to give you the greatest of everything. Just do teshuvah so I can forgive you." We have to answer the call and actually make teshuvah. The days are passing by quickly. We have to think about what we did wrong and go through the steps necessary to gain full atonement, which include admitting to Hashem what we did. We have to actually say, "I did this wrong." Amazingly, Hashem gives us a mitzvah for confessing our sins. Imagine the judge tells the defendant, "Come tell me what you did wrong so I can forgive you. And besides that, I'm going to give you a huge reward just for admitting it." Hashem not only gives us the ability to erase the damage we caused, He gives us a mitzvah for doing it as well. Rabbeinu Yonah speaks about the regret that we have to have as part of our teshuvah. We have to think about what we did. How could we have gone against the will of Hashem? Hashem warned us in the Torah about all the negative consequences of sin, yet we still allowed a temporary desire to overcome us. How could we exchange eternity for a fleeting pleasure? How could we damage the holy neshamah that Hashem gave us just to satisfy the yetzer hara for a few moments? The Navi tells us that even an animal knows who provides for it. Hashem gives us every breath we take, every heartbeat, every blessing. When we think about that, we can sincerely say, "Hashem, how could I have gone against You? You give me everything." And then we have to make a commitment for the future. We tell Hashem, "I don't want to do this anymore. I want to change." Hashem knows what's in our hearts. He knows our weaknesses, and He knows whether or not we're sincere. Teshuvah doesn't mean we can guarantee that we'll never face the challenge again. It means that right now we sincerely regret what we did, we genuinely don't want to do it again, and we accept upon ourselves, to the best of our ability, not to repeat it. We can't imagine what happens when a person sincerely does teshuvah. The Rambam writes that before teshuvah, a person can be so distant from Hashem, but afterward he is beloved and desired, close and dear. Chazal tell us that teshuvah can rip up a harsh decree. It can bring a refuah shelemah. It can lengthen a person's life. And during these days, the opportunity is even greater. The Rambam tells us that although teshuvah and crying out to Hashem are always good, during the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah they are especially effective and are accepted immediately. Imagine someone had a stain on a very expensive garment that normally needed an enormous process to remove. Then, for just a few days, the manufacturer announced that anyone could bring in his stained garment and they would clean it for him on the spot. No one would say, "Well, let me see if I get around to it." He would run there while the opportunity was available. That is the opportunity we have now during the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah. We all know that sometimes when a person experiences pain or difficulty, it's a kapparah. Kapparah means that the suffering is helping to atone for our sins. But we would rather not have the sin and not need the kapparah. Teshuvah removes the sins and cleanses us from them. And our Rabbis teach us about the unbelievable power that Torah study has to help bring the full atonement that we need. Torah study can atone for the most serious sins. Aveirot that even korbanot cannot completely atone for can be atoned for through Torah study. Hashem tells us that the words of Torah that come out of our mouths are more precious to Him than all the korbanot that can be offered. And the Midrash tells us that even sins that carry the punishment of death at the hands of Heaven can be atoned for through increased Torah study. What an opportunity! A person can say, "Hashem, I want to come closer to You. I want to become cleansed. I'm going to add more Torah study to my life." Now is the time. We want to be pure. We want to be close to Hashem. We have an opportunity of a lifetime. The days of Aseret Yemei Teshuvah are passing by quickly. Let us take advantage of them, do teshuvah, strengthen our Torah study, and come back to Hashem. And in that zechut, may Hashem cleanse us and inscribe and seal us for a year filled with life, berachah, and hatzlacha.

Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores ten powerful dimensions of the shofar, based on the teachings of Rav Saadia Gaon. He begins with the very pattern of the shofar sounds themselves: the firm tekiah, the broken shevarim, the shattered teruah, and finally another strong tekiah. This sequence reflects the rhythm of human life. We experience times of confidence, periods of brokenness, and moments when we feel shattered—but we can become whole again. The shofar tells us that this cycle is not a failure; it is part of the journey Hashem created for us. The first reasons for the shofar focus on our relationship with Hashem. It coronates Hashem as our personal King, awakens us to teshuvah, and recalls the revelation at Mount Sinai, when every Jewish soul experienced extraordinary closeness and clarity. The shofar also echoes the calls of the prophets, whose blasts were designed to wake the Jewish people from spiritual complacency. Hearing it should therefore never be passive; it is meant to awaken us and make the kingship of Hashem real in our lives.  Other meanings connect the shofar to the destruction and future rebuilding of the Temple, the binding of Isaac, awe and humility, and the Day of Judgment. The Akeidah represents absolute dedication to Hashem, while the shofar's call to humility reminds us that although we are tiny in comparison with the universe, Hashem still desires a personal relationship with each of us. On Rosh Hashanah, we must also prepare our case before the heavenly Judge: Why should Hashem grant us another year, and what will we do differently with the life and blessings He gives us?   The final themes look toward redemption: the ingathering of the exiles and the resurrection of the dead will also be accompanied by the shofar. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that prayer itself can happen anywhere—not only in a synagogue or with a siddur. Prayer means opening the heart and speaking directly with Hashem, whether in Houston, on the highway, at a red light, or in a doctor's waiting room. The shofar ultimately becomes a form of communication beyond words—a spiritual “send button” carrying our deepest message to Hashem.   Rabbi Wolbe concludes by encouraging listeners to prepare before the shofar is blown. Close your eyes, stop everything else, and ask: What is my message to Hashem? Perhaps it is simply, “I want to be closer to You. Rush Hashanah is a day of judgment. On this day, God sits, as it were, on His Throne of Judgment. The intensity and scrutiny of divine judgment is unfathomable. Even the angels quake and quiver with trepidation. For some, the results of the judgment are instantaneous: the completely righteous are immediately inscribed and sealed into the Book of Life, and the completely wicked are immediately inscribed and sealed into the Book of Death. For the in-betweeners however, their fate is determined by their conduct during the Ten Days of Repentance. Lot is standing outside Sodom with two angels, just before the city burns, and they tell him to run for the mountains. He asks for an alternative: a nearby town named Zoar, close enough that he won't have to face the wilderness alone. G-d grants his request, sparing that city from being consumed in the destruction. Then the fire falls. Lot's wife looks back and is turned into a pillar of salt as four cities are turned to ash.Lot's prayer for that small town to be spared gets answered. Abraham's prayer for Sodom itself, offered by the man whose righteousness the entire Torah is built around, does not. Rabbi Epstein brings in a teaching from the Maggid on why the smaller, more self-interested prayer succeeds where the greater one fails, and what it means that some prayers are being saved for people who haven't been born yet.The episode closes in a cave in the mountains, where Lot ends up after all, and where his family takes a turn that will shape nations for generations.

The entire book of Devarim occurs over the span of 36 days, the final 36 days of Moshe's life. The final four Parshas are an account of the last day of Moshe's life. As he is about to transition to the other world, the reliable shepherd gathers all the people together for one last covenant and exhortation to hearken to the word of God and to not go astray. But why would the nation go astray? These are the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who were chosen by God to be his people. This is the nation that witnessed the Exodus, the theophany at Sinai, who ate the manna and drank water from a rock, who received revelation directly from God and Torah from Moshe himself. Why is there a risk that they will lapse into idolatry? Why is there a concern that they may mimic the barbarous, abominable ways of the nations? Mitzvos have infinite value. There is no experience that we can have in this world that matches the reward in the world to come for a single mitzvah. But not all mitzvos are the same. Some contain more power than others. And even within a single mitzvah, there are infinite gradients of degrees of devotion and self-sacrifice and commitment and refinement that separate one act of that particular mitzvah from another. In Days 195–196 of Orchot Tzaddikim, The Ways of the Righteous, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the Gate of Fear of Heaven by developing the idea that the human being is a microcosm of the entire world. Just as creation contains trees, herbs, fruits, waters, rivers, stones, mountains, winds, and countless other systems, the human body contains parallel structures and functions. The author uses these comparisons to awaken awe at the complexity and wisdom Hashem embedded within us.The lesson moves through a series of physical parallels: the digestive system is compared to the depths of the earth, arteries to rivers, bones to the foundations of the world, kidneys and bodily ducts to waterways, and the various fluids of the body to the different waters found throughout creation. The message is not merely anatomical. It is that the human body itself reflects a larger Divine pattern and should inspire a deeper appreciation of the Creator.Day 196 expands the comparison further. The Orchot Tzaddikim parallels hot and cold winds with human breath, thunder with the human voice, lightning with the brightness of the face, mountains with the body's joints and structures, stones with teeth and bones, soil with flesh and skin, vegetation with human hair, and even the zodiac with the spinal column and its attached structures. The author also describes ancient forms of wisdom through which sages were said to discern future events from natural signs, bodily features, vegetation, and other aspects of creation.Rabbi Wolbe concludes by emphasizing the wonder of the human body. The same wisdom Hashem placed throughout the cosmos is, in miniature, embedded within each person. The point is not to become distracted by speculative worlds beyond us, but to recognize the extraordinary miracle already present within our own bodies.
