William Tyrone Toms is the Founder and Head of Strategy at REC Philly, a creative agency and incubator for local artists and creative entrepreneurs. In 2019, after this episode was recorded, REC Philly opened up a new, state-of-the-art facility that features podcast and music studios, a coworking space, a visual lab, and more. In this episode, you’ll hear how Will and his cofounder, Dave Silver, would make a name for themselves throwing concerts as Broad Street Music Group. That is, until Will started to see a bigger need: artists could put on a great show but had no idea how to network and market themselves. What follows is the story of how REC Philly would be born to provide creatives with the tools and network they need to build a business around their creative craft. The community quickly grew to serve over 200 creatives, some of whom would immediately find life-changing opportunities. And, for the first time, you’ll hear how Will has recently opened up about his troubled family past, and how he looks to set an example for those like him who are born into adversity. This Episode is supported by Crossbeam. Crossbeam is hiring! Check out their available positions here.
This episode kicks off with Hakim’s Bookstore owner Yvonne Blake and a discussion about community building. She runs the shop — one of the oldest African American bookstores in the country — that her father opened in West Philadelphia in 1959. The pair, who made Forbes’ 2021 30 Under 30 list, founded studio/shop/production house/event space REC Philly to put the city’s creative economy into the hands of makers. Their grant-funded #BlackMusicCity project helps Black creators pursue their goals. Tune in to hear how these passionate Philadelphians are creating real, sustainable change by sharing knowledge and resources.

As Dave puts it, "In most companies, there is a visionary and an integrator. Will is the visionary. I am the integrator." Dave and Will have a special bond and with that bond, and with their team at REC Philly, they are forging a unique path to fulfill a vision they first had for artists, musicians, and all-around creatives. It has been more than a decade of many realizations that have accumulated to this moment for both Dave and Will. From managing artists in college and throwing parties in frats, to building their first facility in North Philly and then recently at 9th and Market - the Fashion District of Philadelphia. It has been a beautifully, strenuous journey in building out this dream and vision, but Dave and Will are grateful for the entire process. In this episode, they dive into their story, the lessons learned along the way, and advice for everyday entrepreneurs and creatives like yourself. They don't call it the city of brotherly love for nothing. Will Toms is a young entrepreneur from Philly who is creating a new way for artists to collaborate. Growing up in and around the city Will saw how often artists were competing for the same shine. RECPhilly, a company he co-founded with his high school best friend Dave Silver, is one of the most prominent start-ups in the city. The goal for RECPhilly was to create a space that could be a one stop shop for artists to find everything under one roof. A recording studio? Check. A visual arts space for music videos? Check. A chill spot for your boys to hangout and play ping-pong? Check. What originally started as a one room operation in an old North Philadelphia window factory has quickly become a sought after collaborative environment. Will and I chopped it up at the studio and he gave me a tour of the whole operation. We talk about learning his hustle from his grandma, starting out as a show promoter for college parties, and living on the floor at RECPhilly for a year to get the business off the ground. There are some incredible take aways about branding and strategy as an emerging artist in this one. I hope you learn as much as I did. If you would like to connect with Will or learn more about the free thinkers program the info and links are below. Interview starts around 6:30. Enjoy!
