Dawn Fitch was living her best life as a graphic designer at Sony Music. But one day, as she walked down the street, she lost all feeling in her legs. Her body was sending her message, and while it took several years for her to be diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, she decided to look more closely at the products she used. Dissatisfied, she started making her own as a hobby, and the seeds of Pooka Pure and Simple were planted. And at the urging of friends, she took her products to a local festival and sold them all, and after that happened over and over, she decided to look turn her hobby into a business. With nearly two decades as an entrepreneur, Dawn certainly has some valuable insights to impart. An important one is that entrepreneurs have to be willing to put their pride aside. If she hadn't decided to supplement her income with a job as a restaurant hostess, she would never have made the connection to open her first store. If she hadn't accepted an invitation to bring her products to a showcase at Sony, she would have never gotten her products in more than 60 Whole Foods. Dawn also shares how the mailing list she began to cultivate at festivals is one of her best selling tools and how the Facebook Group she created, The Best Life Tribe, was the community that helped her pivot during the pandemic. She also shares how she came to have the best Christmas sales number in 2020 due to a grant from HSN/QVC, which allowed her to sell Pooka on the air. Also, Dawn shares how she and her partner, LaShonda Tyree, have taught more than 1,000 Girl Scouts entrepreneurial skills in a program they created called Beauty That Cares. Learn all of this and more in this week's episode.

If you didn’t get a chance, listen to Episode #2: Today, inside the Pooka Pure and Simple Show room, I'll be talking the founder and my sistah friend, Dawn Fitch (and yes Pooka Pure and Simple IS fun to say). Dawn was featured in many magazines including Black Enterprise, More Magazine, WWD, The New York Times, and this year in Essence Magazine as one of their top 20 Beauty Brands. Little did Dawn know, that indirectly, she was part of the reason why this podcast was created. She gave me an opportunity to settle and grow my business which I am immensely grateful for. Because Dawn is the epitome of grace, when I told her this her comment was: “We all take turns inspiring each other and lifting each other up.” Dawn founded Pooka Pure and Simple which offers irresistible body butters, body oils and so much more. Her products are available online and in various Whole Foods Markets. Dawn tries to find the funny in everything. However, when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2007, she needed support more than laughs. So, she reached out to her tribe and a new journey began. With Dawn Fitch, founder and creator– POOKA became a lifelong pursuit when she became mysteriously ill. After numerous visits to doctors and specialists and no sound diagnosis she began to explore alternative therapies, it was here her interest in aromatherapy and its healing and relaxing attributes was born. She began reading the ingredients of EVERYTHING and became painfully aware of just how much of what we consume is saturated with unhealthy, unnatural ingredients. In an effort to combat illness and stress and the realization that so much of what goes into the body is not good for you, she changed her entire health regime. Combining her love for aromatherapy and the need to take better care of herself inside and out she began creating her own bath and body products. Just for fun, she took a few of her hand made products to sell at a local festival and sold out! The response was tremendous. That’s when the realization hit that she had an incredible business idea and Pooka was born! She knew she couldn’t achieve her Pooka dream alone so she enlisted the help of those closest and dearest to her. Together she and her girlfriends formed Pooka Pure & Simple. www.pookapureandsimple.com
