What sort of problems arise when Architects and Engineers are unfamiliar with the physical context of a building site? How can they work together to ensure that things such as site drainage are adequately dealt with? When Architects fail to familiarize themselves with existing site conditions, they and their consultants may be designing in a bubble. In this case, the site grading drawings were fine, but failed to note that the site was at the foot of a hill. The SkillsFuture JobSeeker Support aims to help the retrenched tide over financially, while between jobs, after tough talks with unions, employers and the Government. Synopsis: Every month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at Singapore's social issues of the day with guests. As the global economy changes more rapidly and unpredictably, workers may face more risk from job loss despite best efforts. Yet, going out of a job can pose a hit to household finances. In an era of rising cost of living, lower- and middle-income workers are more likely to jump on the first job offer without considering their aptitudes. To give these workers more time to find the ‘right' job for them, the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme will be launched in April 2025, with financial support structured to spur an active job search without incentivising prolonged unemployment. The scheme, estimated to cost the Government $200 million every year, comes as a result of tough talks among employers, unions and the Government. In this episode, ST assistant podcast editor Lynda Hong and journalist Tay Hong Yi host Manpower minister Tan See Leng to learn how the scheme has taken shape behind the scenes. Highlights (click/tap above): 5:38 On the Government relooking its position on financial support for those who have lost jobs 11:11 On the scheme's gestation: What took place behind the scenes 17:51 What are the safeguards in place for the scheme and why? 21:48 Eligibility criteria: Too complex to understand for job seekers? 25:36 Will the scheme help workers at higher risk? 28:58 How does this scheme reflect the 4G leadership's approach to policymaking? Hour 3 THE DRIVE 09-23-24 Reaction Monday!
It's Monday, September 16th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Muslim Pakistani brothers abduct, forcibly convert, and marry two Catholic sisters A high court in Pakistan has ordered police to recover two Catholic sisters, ages 13 and 18, who were kidnapped, forcibly converted to Islam, and married to their abductors, reports The Christian Post. Police initially refused to make efforts to recover Neha Javed and her older sister, Saneha Javed, following their July 23rd kidnapping in the Kasur District in Punjab. Two Muslim brothers from their neighborhood broke in, locked the parents' bedroom, and abducted the girls, leaving behind six other siblings. On July 29th, the family received images of Islamic conversion certificates and Islamic marriage certificates of both girls from a relative's phone. The 13-year-old, Neha, was shown as 19 years old in the marriage certificate, while 18-year-old Saneha's age was declared as 21. The sisters' mother, Sumera Bibi, said, “The accused's family is pressuring us to stop pursuing the matter and even attacked my husband with an axe when he confronted them. How can we let them destroy the lives of our daughters? Neha is only 13, while her abductor-husband is more than double her age.” Please pray that the police successfully find and free 13-year-old Neha and 18-year-old Seneha. Psalm 10:1-2, 10-12, asks, "Why, Lord, do You stand far off? Why do You you hide yourself in times of trouble? In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. He says to himself, ‘God will never notice; He covers His face and never sees.' Arise, Lord! Lift up Your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.” Pakistan ranks seventh on Open Doors' 2024 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian. Pope Francis: “Every religion is a way to arrive at God.” On Friday, Pope Francis told young people of different faiths that “every religion is a way to arrive at God,” reports LifeSiteNews.com. Addressing an inter-religious meeting of young people in Singapore, Pope Francis said this through his translator. TRANSLATOR: “One of the things that struck me about all of you here is your ability to engage in inter religious dialog. Every religion is a way to arrive at God. They're sort of like different languages in order to arrive at God.” The pope provided no explanation for how a Muslim, a Hindu, or a Buddhist, all of whom deny Jesus is God, could be saved if they deny the clear teaching of John 14:6 where Jesus proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except through Me.” Trump: Kamala's open door policies resulted in 325,000 migrant children missing At a press conference on Friday in Los Angeles, Donald Trump revealed some of Kamala Harris' horrific record as California Attorney General, reports Fox News. TRUMP: “As Attorney General, she defined child sex trafficking, assault with a deadly weapon, and rape of an unconscious person as nonviolent crime. She put them in a new category as nonviolent.” Trump added that as Vice President, Kamala Harris facilitated “the largest wave of sex trafficking and human trafficking in history" by allowing cartels to operate on the U.S.-Mexico border. TRUMP: “Now, as Vice President, she's facilitated the largest wave of sex trafficking and human trafficking in history, the history of our country by far. Under this administration, 325,000 migrant children are missing. 325,000! In other words, take your biggest stadium in California and you could fill it up five or six times. Those are all missing children. Many of them are dead. Many of them are sex slaves.” Tinder dating app facilitates casual sex, gives money to Planned Parenthood The relationship between so-called hookup apps such as Tinder and the abortion industry has always been implicit. The digitization of the hookup culture—swipe left, swipe right, meet for sex—has simplified the dating landscape for those seeking casual sex. Since launching in 2012, Tinder facilitated 1.5 million “dates” weekly and has over 60 million users. While some certainly use Tinder to seek long-term relationships, its primary function is as a sexual marketplace. As one recent Australian study found: “Tinder users were more likely to disagree with statements such as ‘I have a hard time respecting a girl who has casual sex' and more likely to agree with statements such as ‘Casual sex is acceptable.'” With millions of people meeting up for casual sexual encounters, it is inevitable that some of them will discover that the baby-making act has resulted in making a baby. It is also inevitable that many of those who become pregnant will seek abortions. In 2021, the parent company of Tinder, Match Group, publicly opposed pro-life laws in Texas. Then, in 2022, the Guardian reported, the company went further: “Match Group has been a vocal advocate of abortion rights, especially after the Supreme Court's ruling in June. The company announced on Tuesday that it would add a ‘pro-choice' badge to users' profile options. Match Group also supports Planned Parenthood through in-app promotions.” Students raise $20,000 to buy custodian Jeep Wrangler And finally, STUDENT 1: “He's more than just a custodian; he's a dear friend to all of us. He's just a very kind, genuine person.” That's the way one student at James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia, described custodian Francis Apraku, a Ghanaian man, according to a report from WUSA-TV. STUDENT 2: “He's a bundle of joy. I mean, he would always pray for us before our football games freshman year. And he would always support us no matter what.” A group of kind-hearted students created a GoFundMe account and raised $20,000 in just six months. The kids then partnered with an area car dealership and used the cash to buy Apraku a cherry red 2015 Jeep Wrangler. The students surprised their school's custodian with the new vehicle on Monday, September 9th, In fact, he was so excited, the janitor fell to the ground and began rolling around. APRAKU: “This day, ninth September, I will never, ever forget today.” (applause) The janitor expressed gratitude to God through tears. APRAKU: “I don't believe this will happen in my life. I will give thanks to Almighty God for making today for me.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, September 16th, in the year of our Lord 2024. The government was told the free lunches for schools programme would have a "profound impact on wellbeing" before it decided to cut the scheme's funding earlier this year. The advice was revealed in budget documents released yesterday which also laid out how the Ka Ora Ka Ako scheme resulted in happier and healthier children. But Associate Minister David Seymour, who is the architect behind the trimmed down scheme - said they are able to do the same while spending less, Finn Blackwell has more.

I knew that being able and willing to try a case to a jury was a skill that I needed to have if I was going to be able to offer my clients the best legal representation. Insurance companies and corporate defendants need to believe you when you say you will take them to trial – they need to fear that.”This type of real trial experience is exceedingly rare in complex civil litigation and having seen it from the defense side gives Jake an added advantage. At TorHoerman Law, Jake manages our Chicago office where he leads trial teams in nationwide, complex litigations such as:Representing dozens of workers across the United States who were exposed to Diacetyl at work and now suffer lung diseaseeg. Early Life & EducationTor was born the youngest of four boys on July 16, 1969, in Bethesda, Maryland to Kirk and Greta Hoerman. With his father serving as a Captain in the Navy, Tor often moved towns during his childhood, eventually landing in the Chicago metropolitan area.In Chicago, Tor lived in the Great Lakes Naval Base and Lake Bluff before his family settled in Lake Forest, which is where he attended high school.Despite repeatedly switching homes, Tor made the most of his situation. In high school, he played football, basketball, and baseball, and he earned varsity letters in each of these sports. In addition to varsity recognition, he was recognized as an All-county athlete and awarded the Booster Club Athlete of the Year his senior year.Outside of sports, Tor coached little league baseball, served as a summer camp counselor, and worked as a summertime janitor at his former high school after graduating.Tor attended Depauw University and majored in Political Science. He played NCAA baseball and football at Depauw, and he was the captain of the baseball team. After graduating from Depauw in 1991, Tor enrolled in the Chicago-Kent College of Law.During law school, Tor bartended at a local bar and clerked for Kravolec, Jambois & Schwartz, LLC. Legal CareerAfter graduating from law school in 1995, Tor took on a job doing insurance defense at Bolero, Cart & Stone, LLC, where he worked reluctantly for a year and a half. One day at work, Tor received a phone call from Steve Jambois, his former employer throughout law school, asking if he wanted a job on the plaintiff's side of insurance law.Tor immediately accepted the job, kickstarting decades to come of fighting corporations on behalf of harmed individuals.Tor's Transition to Medical Malpractice LitigationTor returned to Kravolec, Jambois & Schwartz to fight on behalf of medical malpractice victims, which mostly consisted of high-intensity trial work in the Chicago courthouse. After seven years at the Jambois firm, Hoeman was recruited by the Simmons law firm, based in an Illinois suburb of St. Louis, to start and lead a branch of the practice that focused on pharmaceutical litigation.Leading the Pharmaceutical Practice at Simmons Law FirmTor became a partner of what is now Simmons, Hanly, and Conroy and led the pharmaceutical practice for seven years. One of Tor most notable achievements while leading the practice was his work against Purdue Pharma and its reckless distribution of OxyContin.Tor was the first to file a case alleging Purdue Pharma's wrongdoing in distributing OxyContin and failing to adequately warn healthcare providers and the public of the risks of addiction.Achieving Justice Against Purdue PharmaHe led the litigation process and got Purdue Pharma to agree to a large settlement, which was distributed to thousands of accidental addicts.Tor took a step further to achieve justice in this case, assisting the Department of Justice in obtaining guilty pleas by Purdue Pharma representatives who had a direct role in contributing to the opioid epidemic. Founding TorHoerman LawHaving garnered success leading the pharmaceutical branch at the Simmons firm, Tor amicably decided to split from Simmons in 2009 and start his own pharmaceutical and personal injury practice called TorHoerman Law, LLC (THL).After negotiating the terms of the split, Tor struck a deal that allowed him to bring his entire staff from Simmons to his new practice, which summed up to more than 25 lawyers and staff members.Expansion and Success of THLTor opened offices in Edwardsville, IL; Clayton, MO; and Chicago, IL to kickstart operations; all three offices remain open today. In the time since opening THL, Tor and his team have litigated many pharmaceutical malpractice and personal injury cases.Notable Successes at THLTor's most notable successes while operating THL are perhaps co-leading the litigations against Boehringer Ingelheim's Pradaxa and Takeda's Actos.Through intense research and vetting, Tor was able to find substantial evidence indicating Actos causes bladder cancer and Pradaxa causes internal bleeding. He then presented the evidence to the companies, which decided to settle the cases.Tor played a significant role in negotiating these settlements, which ended up being $650 million for Pradaxa and $2.4 billion for Actos.Tor has also had major success in several other product liability lawsuits, such as Zelnorm, Gadolinium-based Contrast Agents, and Incretin Mimetics. We've outlined these cases, a few other notable cases, and their correlating results in the section below.Recognition & AwardsHis successes with these cases and beyond earned him the distinction as a Top 25 Notable Alumni from the Chicago-Kent School of Law, which was awarded to him and 24 other lawyers out of the tens of thousands who have graduated from the school since its founding in 1888.Tor is also recognized as a Top 100 National Trial Lawyer by the National Trial Lawyers Organization. Notable Cases & ResultsPradaxa (Dabigatran Etexilate) – Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2385 – Appointed by Judge Herndon as national lead counsel in the MDL. Today is day 72 and we are in the section on the Second Article of the Apostles' Creed on Jesus Christ the Son of God. Today we are on the tenth line: “He ascended into Heaven” and studying question 72. 72. What resulted from the ascension? Jesus ascended into heaven so that, through him, his Father might send us the gift of the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit, Christians together are united to Christ, the living Head of his Body, the Church. ( John 14:15–17, 25–26; 16:7–15; Acts 2:33–36; Ephesians 4:7–16) We will conclude today with the Collect for the Sunday after the Ascension found on page 613 of the Book of Common Prayer (2019).
