THE SYSTEM WORKS—When I decided to launch this podcast back in 2019, it didn't take me long to realize that I didn't want to do it alone. The first person I called? Today's guest, Debra Bishop.I've known Deb a little bit for a long time, but well enough to know her insight, humor, and world view would elevate every conversation we'd have. But also, and more importantly, she is without question one of the most consequential editorial designers working today. Deb has helped define the visual and structural DNA of some of the most iconic media brands of the last few decades, from Martha Stewart's Blueprint, to More Magazine, and now, to The New York Times for Kids. What sets Deb apart is not just her eye, but her mind. She's a master of creating editorial systems—cohesive, flexible frameworks that hold entire magazines together, giving them both structure and soul. Her designs guide readers effortlessly, creating rhythm, clarity, and a sense of trust.Deb never overdesigns or distracts—she amplifies. Her layouts are confident, elegant, quietly powerful, and often these days, lots of fun. And as a leader and mentor, she's shaped not just magazines but careers. She's helped raise the standard for what editorial design can be, and what a creative partnership should look like.Deb makes everything better: the work, the process, the people around her. Her influence is everywhere—including on this podcast—and I feel incredibly lucky to call her a friend and colleague.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Commercial Type and Freeport Press. To date, her Online Contesting System has helped others win over $1,000,000 in cash and prizes. The 2nd Edition, How To Win Cash, Cars, Trips & More! was published in 2016. The 3rd Edition: Prizes, Prizes, Everywhere! will be published in 2021. In keeping with her objective of teaching others how to have fun, From the Contest Queen is a blog about all things contesting, sweepstaking, lucky & fun, along with her tips, tricks, news, and rants on the hobby.  Additionally, Carolyn runs seminars and webinars: How to Win Cash, Cars, Trips … & More! and Attracting Luck for hundreds of people annually. From 2005 until 2011, Carolyn produced The Winning EDGE, a free e-newsletter that included contesting stories, tips, tricks, and links to new contests.  From 2008 until 2010, Carolyn hosted an online radio show, With The Contest Queen, interviewing the movers and shakers in the promotional industry and sweepstaking community. Both were revamped and relaunched in 2013, with The Winning EDGE being sent out bi-weekly and With The Contest Queen only broadcasting special podcasts.  (NOTE: Archives for both the newsletter and radio show can be found online.) After being a featured speaker at numerous promotional events and U.S. sweepstaking conventions, she formed Canada's first contesting clubs.  Once several clubs had been firmly established, Carolyn co-founded the Canadian Contestors Association, which ran the Canadian Contestors Convention in 2007. Carolyn, her volunteer team, and the convention were filmed by the CBC for a Doc Zone documentary and written about in Reader's Digest, both released in 2008. She is currently a lead volunteer for SweepsCon 2017, to be held in Orange County, CA, in July. In 2013 Carolyn embarked on her first U.S. Tour.  The “Secrets to Winning” Sweepstakes Tour took her through 17 states, hosting workshops in 12 cities and teaching “sweepers” How To Use RoboForm Effectively along with How to Win on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest by giving away over $6000 in prizes over the course of 4 weeks. In 2019 Carolyn decided to big up a gauntlet that was given to her in 2008. She bought the rights to all of Helene Hadsell's work. After being out of print for over 30 years, the first book to be updated and re-published was Contesting: The Name It & Claim It Game. In Contact With Other Realms and Confessions of an 83-Year-Old Sage were re-published shortly after. Her final book, a work of fiction, A Man Called Friday, will be re-published in 2023. Her efforts as a marketing expert landed her on the cover of Marketing Magazine in 2006; she was named by MORE Magazine as one of Canada's Top 40 Women over 40 in 2007 and was featured in the premiere episode of High Stakes Sweepers on TLC in 2011. Join Joyce & Lesley Seymour, Founder & CEO of CoveyClub.com, for a casual conversation perfect for a walk. Joyce and Lesley discuss why it is people have a hard time changing their habits, and how creating one 30-second, tiny habit can make all the difference. Their conversation walks you through what a tiny habit is, how you can implement them into your life, and why you should celebrate every "tiny" success.About LesleyLesley is a former Editor-in-Chief of four national magazines (More, Marie Claire, Redbook, YM) and founder of CoveyClub.com and the Reinvent Yourself with Lesley Jane Seymour podcast. After learning how to reinvent herself after More Magazine closed in 2016, she opened CoveyClub to welcome other women 40+ who are in transition–from job loss, empty nest, health crisis, elder care, divorce, widowhood, or whatever. One of the lessons Lesley learned as an editor was the power of just one tiny, single voice to change the world. Her Tiny Habits coaching allows her to bring the science of small moves to creating big changes. Tiny Habits teaches us that change starts with what you say to yourself when your feet hit the ground each morning. We Need a New Dynamic Word for Women Over 50! I know this because I'm one. The existing words suck.   'Woman of a certain age ?' 'Past my prime?' Who the hell says so?   I'm ready for my next act and I'll never be out of next acts!   Did you know there are 999 adjectives on Google to describe an older woman and they're all rotten. Words like old bag, granny, biddy, and that line I remember hearing a young idiot guy say behind my back once- “she's got a few miles on her.' I shoulda kicked his puny ass right then. Lol .   Point is...we seriously need a new upbeat word to describe all the dynamic women making their individual ways through the latter phases of life reinventing, taking chances, having new adventures, and savoring their time invested in ‘life'. We especially need to let the younger women coming up behind us know, it's never over as long as you say so.   Lesley Jane Seymour former Editor-in Chief of More Magazine and current Founder of Covey Club, a National and international group of women interested in personal and business growth, was just quoted in a story about women and ageism.   She joined me today on my radio show to talk about that piece in The Hill titled “2023 is shaping up to be the Year of the 50+ Woman.” 60 year old Oscar winner Michelle Yeohs acceptance comment was loud. “Ladies, do not let anyone ever tell you you are past your prime”.   Ok damnit we won't!   Most wise women know the problem is our society that values youth and beauty. That and obnoxious men who don't have mirrors ( sorry to the respectful guys) . I'm talking about the guys who are quick to joke about older women being past their sexual prime. (Sidebar: One peek through the blinds at a woman over 50 having a hot romance night would cure them of that thought but hey that's another story. )   Men who age are celebrated with cool words like ‘silver fox ‘ and ‘dignified older gentleman ‘.   There are no positive words for women who age. We need a new word!   Women collectively need to put our heads together. How ‘bout WNDY? (Woman Not Done Yet!)    Enjoy Lesley Jane Seymour and I gettin' real about all the fabulous 'Women Not Done Yet' on this podcast of our live interview on my radio show.    And check out Lesley's Covey Club  - you might just want to join.   ABOUT MY RADIO SHOW    THE DEBBIE NIGRO SHOW 11-12 noon EST WGCH Radio1490 or hit Listen LIVE at WGCH.com Show Interview Podcasts Posted After Here on DebbieNigro.com   No Politics - Always Relevant...Always Hopeful...and Always A Little Humor...In Spite Of It All! In the game of life, every species is like an action figure. You got your dogs and your dung beetles, your bald eagles and your blueberries. And for a long time scientists believed it was pretty much impossible for those action figures to mix and make a new kind of action figure that was able to have its own babies (dog beetles? Baldberries? Nah). But, today we tell the story of a four-legged beast in Kentucky whose existence is upending scientific beliefs. If you want a big fat SPOILER, here it is: the creature in question is a mule! After almost 20 years of living her life as a hybrid (a mix between a horse and a donkey), believed to be incapable of having babies, Peanut the mule shocked the world by doing the impossible. Peanut's owners, Teresa and Jerry Smothers, tell us the story of her life. Evolutionary biologist Dr. Molly Schumer explains how scientists' understanding of hybrids has changed dramatically over the course of Peanut's lifetime. And no mule episode would be complete without a cowboy-hatted mule packer leading us deep into the rocky trails of the American West on muleback to explain why mules are the best of both worlds of their parents. In 2012, Seymour was named executive director of Meredith's Beauty Center of Excellence. In 2009 she was named number four on the Most Powerful Fashion Editors List by Forbes magazine. She also previously served as editor-in-chief for Marie Claire magazine and Redbook magazine, beauty director of Glamour, and copywriter and senior editor at Vogue. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: How it was like living The Devil Wears Prada lifestyle Her transition to More.com Why the CoveyClub was born Looking for outside approval vs. working on loving yourself The corporate world vs. the entrepreneurial world Working with Mrs. Michelle Obama and the First Lady of Cambodia Episode Highlights: The CoveyClub So many women feel they're being pushed to say it's over, or they're being pushed to be irrelevant, and they're not having as much control over their destiny. The whole idea of the CoveyClub is to connect women who are 40 plus, with 50 as their sweet spot. These are women who still feel they're not done yet. They have a long life ahead of them and a lifelong productivity trail going on for as long as they want it to be. It's great to have a place to go where you can talk honestly about your issues, your fears, your motivations, and your barriers. And you have real, accomplished women who have the wisdom, experience, and who can connect you to a greater network. Looking for Outside Approval vs. Working on Loving Yourself A lot of people are looking for outside approval I was looking for. But you have to work on loving yourself and knowing your issues and being okay with your issues. Everybody has issues they're not going to get away without. But hopefully, your good points outweigh your bad points. Think of the things you really value and how are you going to be able to bring those things to life and share those with other people. Reinventing Yourself People have found those places for their next lives and it's important to have that space for people to talk about them. Reinvention comes in all shapes and sizes. Just go for it. It takes courage and it takes figuring things out. But you have to know where you really want to be. Whether it's a five-minute reinvention or a 10-year reinvention, it's yours to do what you want with it. Resources Mentioned: https://www.coveyclub.com/
