After speaking with Annette Needham, I can truthfully say she is the expert on all things transplant nursing. She is a doctorally-prepared nurse practitioner who has done it all: worked as a transplant nurse on busy floors, as a transplant coordinator, as a nurse manager, as an inpatient NP, and most recently as a quality transplant manager. She is also a donor advocate and is active in professional transplant organizations. She calls herself bossy, but after getting to know her a bit, I'd say she is intelligent, well-spoken, knowledgeable and just a downright nice person. In the five-minute snippet…she's an IRONMAN!!! About half a dozen sellers of a coffee powder marketed as a weight loss product have been told to close up shop or they could face prosecution, after the brew was found to contain potentially dangerous levels of an amphetamine-like substance. MedSafe is warning consumers to ditch any supplies of Elevacity Elevate Smart Coffee version 3 in the powder form. It's the second time this week the watchdog has issued a serious warning about products masquerading as medicines; making unsubstantiated therapeutic claims, with no proof, with the risk of significant side effects. But getting them off the market can be tough. MedSafe compliance manager Derek Fitzgerald explains what is wrong with the coffee brew.

Ironman has grown into a huge, global business and, like many international corporations, they do a lot of work outside of the sport. Ironman does this through The Ironman Foundation (IMF). My guest today is the Executive Director of IMF, Sarah Hartmann. I first met Sarah in Hawaii through one of our previous podcast guests (Derek Fitzgerald) and she asked me if I would like to get involved with some of their projects. Much of their project work is based around races and host cities, so in recent months they have been doing work in Hawaii (at Ironman time), Panama City, Florida (to continue the rebuilding work after the hurricane in 2018), and Las Vegas (part of a community project to help those affected by the mass shooting in 2017). While many triathletes who compete in Ironman events may be aware of the Foundation, not many know enough about the good work that they do, so in this week’s podcast we’re highlighting their work, including: How IMF works, and the involvement of WTC The power of volunteering and why it is good for everyone Sarah highlights some of the projects that IMF have been involved with and shares her favourite one to date Who actually takes part and how you might end up working alongside “The Voice of Ironman” Mike Reilly How the Foundation helped out at Bolton after the moorland fires which affected IMUK 2018 How you can get involved in an Ironman Foundation project To find out more about the Ironman Foundation, please CLICK HERE We talked about several topics including the Gold Star Initiative run by Mike Ergo. Derek Fitzgerald often refers to himself as ”We” because he received another person's heart in January 2011. Honoring that donor inspired him to rebuild into his strongest self. He has now completed six Iron Man triathlons and is training for two more this year. He talks with Spanny about the journey from super-fit marching band member to overeater to cancer survivor to a cardiac patient awake only one hour a day, unable to leave his bed … until a still-unknown hero gave him the gift of a future. For almost 10 years of his life, my guest on today’s show, Derek Fitzgerald, was just struggling to stay alive. Firstly he was diagnosed with non Hodgkins Lymphoma, and after surgery and chemotherapy he was clear and in remission only to find that the chemo drugs had damaged his heart. He was told that his heart was failing, and he spent the next 7 years slowly deteriorating until 2011 when he received a heart transplant. Since that day he hasn’t looked back. As you might imagine, from someone who has stared death in the face on a daily basis, Derek has been in a hurry to achieve the seemingly impossible. This is a fascinating and emotional story of one man’s survival against the odds, and after listening you will no longer believe there are limits to doing anything you put your mind to. In this episode you will discover: Why after surgery to remove a tumour in his abdomen, Derek had to learn to walk again before starting chemotherapy The paradox of wanting heart disease to get worse so you can make it onto the transplant list How a phrase from the film "Shawshank Redemption” epitomises Derek’s life Why Derek feels like he should "Honour the Gift” Organ donations and why it should be an opt-out process and not an opt-in The journey from heart transplant recipient in Jan 2011 to Ironman fisher in 2013 Becoming the first cancer survivor and heart transplant recipient to complete the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii (2015) Derek is an inspirational person and you can find out more about him by visiting his website Recycledmanspeaks.com You can also follow Derek on Facebook by visiting his page HERE Derek is an ambassador for The Ironman Foundation whose mission is to create positive, tangible change in race communities through grant funding and volunteerism. Fitzgerald was first diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2003. The chemotherapy he received saved his life, but severely damaged his heart and ultimately led to a heart transplant that he received on January 3, 2011. Along the way, Derek overcame severe weight gain and loss, a gall bladder removal, heart failure, diabetes, and twice cheated death. The episode opens up with Derek Fitzgerald telling his story and then moves towards questions about how Derek Fitzgerald thrived despite the dire situation. We talk about the methods Fitzgerald incorporated into his life while adapting to life with a cancer diagnosis, then heart failure with an eventual heart transplant, and now, currently, thriving as a high performing Ironman athlete running a successful non-profit organization. Note, in July of 2013, Fitzgerald became the first cancer surviver and heart transplant recipient to complete the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and the 26.2 mile run of the Ironman triathlon. Derek is the proud father of a beautiful baby girl. By competing in endurance competitions, he celebrates the new life he was given and does his best to honor the anonymous donor that saved his life. Derek states, "My goal is to raise awareness of the issues faced by those with cancer and organ failure, and help fund new developments in the fields of oncology, cardiology and organ transplantation...I run, I swim, and I bike because I can – because I survived. I do it to say thank you to all the people that supported me and to honor the people that didn’t make it this far. I do it because there are still so many that need our support. Everyone deserves a fighting chance – not just to survive, but to live."
