Episode Summary In this episode of the OFM Podcast, Peter Defty, Tony Konvalin, and John Rutherford discuss a variety of topics related to OFM and Human Performance in the context of John's recent EPIC accomplishment of finishing 10th overall at the Badlands 800 Kilometer gravel bike in the Andalusian Deserts of Spain. This event has taken on legendary status in just a few short years attracting the best gravel cyclists from across the globe to challenge themselves against the terrain and elements as well as each other. John shares his incredible experiences as an elite cyclist, Marine Corps F-18 fighter pilot, ultrarunner, IronMan Triathlete then coming back full circle to his first love of cycling culminating most recently with Badlands. John was an early, early adopter of OFM beginning in 2010 by first using VESPA. Like so many people pursuing endurance sports John was suffering from GI issues and bonking. While VESPA made a huge difference in John's fueling, his full adoption of OFM in the fall of 2010 has had profound long term benefits which are part of the conversation. Key Highlights: John Rutherford's Journey John ‘chased the dream' of being a professional cyclist following the conventional high carb diet & fueling recommended at the time which resulted in ever increasing swings in both energy and weight which impacted his ability to perform consistently. Recognizing the costs associated with pursuing a career in Pro Cycling were not worth the benefits, John punched out of the USA Cycling Development Team and went to school and graduated from UC Davis then immediately into the Marine Corps to become an F-18 Pilot with multiple combat missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. During this time John's ‘sports' were confined to basic PT onboard an aircraft carrier or base. While in the Marine Corps as an F-18 pilot John was nominated and selected to become the White House Liaison to the Secretary of the Navy which seeded the bug to become a diplomat with the U.S. Department of State. It was at this point John took up endurance running which transformed into ultrarunning. After going all in on OFM John had several successful 100 milers before transitioning to competing in Half and Full IronMan triathlons including qualifying for and competing at the Kona IronMan World Championships. While posted in Belgrade, Serbia for the State Department during COVID John's rekindled his love for cycling. His selection as the foreign service officer to NATO in Brussels, Belgium has further fuelled the cycling bug, especially gravel racing. Though he continues to run regularly for cross training, his focus since COVID has been on ultracycling events including winning the Liege-Chimay-Liege 500 Kilometer Road Cycling Event overall beating the 2nd place finishers (a 2 person Team) by over 2 hours. . The Badlands Experience A firsthand account of tackling the infamous Badlands 800k race, including its brutal terrain, lack of support, unrelenting heat, grueling climbs and treacherous descents…..all of this balanced by the incredible beauty, resilience, camaraderie and, ultimately, the triumph of a top ten finish. How John secured a top-10 finish despite zero recon or training on course, gravel specific conditioning challenges, and competing against highly prepared, supported athletes. Metabolic Efficiency/Flexibility and OFM The benefits of OFM: reduced calorie intake, performance, endurance, mental clarity/focus/executive function and avoiding the “gut bombs” of traditional fueling. John's experience as the top fat-burner in the FASTER study and how he sustains long efforts with minimal carbs yet uses them when he needs to. John articulates how easy the dietary aspects of OFM are in terms of daily life due to his experience on both ends of the spectrum. Prior to VESPA and OFM, John was High Carb/Low Fat/Low Protein and after finding OFM and the publication of “The Art & Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance”, John moved to a more Keto level of carbohydrate restriction for a few years before starting to re-introduce carbohydrates back into his diet and fueling per OFM's “Strategic Carbohydrates” protocols. Lessons Learned and Future Goals The importance of VESPA and strategic carb use for high-intensity efforts. The importance of event specific training, including training with gear and conditions mimicking the event one is training for. Balancing a demanding career with a family and ultra-endurance sports. Discussion Topics: Adapting a low-carb diet for endurance sports. Fueling strategies for ultras: water, salt, Vespa, and strategic carbs. Wisdom and self-awareness gained from years of racing. The role of OFM in high-level performance and Metabolic Efficiency/Flexibility. Closing Musings: This episode showcases the transformative power of OFM for endurance athletes over the long term. John Rutherford's journey . . . High Carb Pro Cyclist F-18 fighter pilot 100 Mile Ultras (where he found VESPA & OFM) Kona IronMan Winning the prestigious 500K Liege-Chimay-Liege Road Race 10th place Badlands 800K . . . highlights how OFM supports a person to consistently show up and be the best version of themselves no matter what the challenges of ultra-endurance events, including Life! Remember, along with being the Foreign Service Officer for the US Department of State assigned to NATO (John reports directly to the US Ambassador to NATO & he is fluent in Russian), John has a wife and two boys. Hopefully John's long term OFM journey will inspire you to reassess whether the conventional wisdom of high carb dieting and fueling (which is, essentially, “too much sugar”) and whether it really makes sense while exploring how the OFM program and protocols offer a roadmap back to your native physiology and in alignment with our evolutionary heritage. Doesn't matter whether you're an elite athlete, age grouper or simply looking to be the best version of yourself in all aspects of life, John's journey there are nuggets to glean for everyone including how to enjoy the ride, because, remember, whether you know it or not we are all signed up for that ultra-endurance event called Life!

Join Dr. Rak and Po as they sit down with longevity expert and Ironman triathlete Scott Fulton, who offers a fresh and inspiring perspective on aging. Together, they explore how we can confront aging challenges early, adopting a proactive stance that contrasts with society's fear-driven anti-aging narrative. Scott champions the idea of embracing aging as a rewarding phase of life, underscoring the importance of investing in physical, mental, and social well-being—and the vital role curiosity and connection play in a fulfilling life as we grow older. The discussion also takes a critical look at Western ideologies around aging, contrasting them with communal traditions that view aging as a natural and celebrated process. Reflecting on the impact of industrialization and suburbanization, Dr. Rak, Po, and Scott emphasize the need to rebuild intergenerational support systems by learning from cultures that prioritize strong family bonds and community ties. The episode concludes with a look at Scott's concept of "Wealthspan," an approach that integrates health and wealth to redefine successful aging. Scott shares his own story of transformation from a sedentary lifestyle to competing in Ironman races at 47, challenging stereotypes around aging and athleticism. Together, they unpack the importance of career transitions, financial responsibility, and the impact of technology on cognitive health, encouraging listeners to engage in proactive planning and meaningful conversations around aging and end-of-life considerations. With so much information out there on how to cycle-sync your workouts, exercising for physical health and the latest workout trends, it can feel a bit overwhelming to know what you should be doing, especially as a woman. With infertility, hormone imbalance conditions, and aging we are often left confused after trying to decipher what truly will help us stay healthy. This week Dr. Botsford join us to share what she has learned through intensive research on exercise and women's health. As an Ironman Triathlete, she is deeply interested in understanding how exercise effects the body, women's hormones, and overall how it supports us through aging. What I love most about this conversation is her approach on releasing restrictions around how we workout and instead explore movement that encourages us to be active. In this episode we explore: Puberty, sports, and irregular periods How important nutrition plays in supporting hormones and female health? Is cycle syncing our workouts really important for hormone health? Amenorrhoea, Fertility, and Perminopause - what we may need to consider when creating an impactful workout routine? Our bleed days - do we work out or do we rest? Dr. Briana Botsford is a naturopathic doctor, Ironman triathlete, and owner of Flow Functional Health Care in Edmonton, Alberta. Her personal background in sport led her to focus on the intersection of sports medicine and women's health; supporting athletes and active folks through nutrition, lifestyle and nutritional supplementation. She completed her undergraduate education at Queen's University studying Physical and Health Education and Life Sciences. She attended the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine to complete her designation as an ND with a focus in sports medicine. Dr. Botsford has written for the Canadian Journal of Naturopathic Medicine and has lectured with several institutions including McMaster University, the Alberta Association of Naturopathic Doctors and the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. She has been featured on several podcasts discussing both sports medicine and women's health topics including the impact of athletic nutrition on menstrual health, relative-energy deficiency in sport, maintaining athleticism in perimenopause and more. She is a faculty member with the Confident Clinician Club, an evidence-based platform for integrative practitioners. In the second of our holiday shows we have an interview that we did with Mike Plant years ago. Here's what we wrote about Mike when he was on the show: Mike Pigg is recognised as one of the toughest athletes ever. Here's what Macca said about Mike 'Mike Pigg, in my honest opinion, was the most hard-core racer the sport had ever seen. He was an absolute monster on the bike and had so much heart he was inspiring to watch. He was all heart and pushed himself so hard you could see it in his face. Actually I think Piggy won most of his races out of sheer heart, and is so often an athlete who is forgotten from this great era.' In the late 80's there was a period where he was almost unbeatable. He was known for being an amazing biker and an all around good guy.
In the first of our holiday shows we have an interview that we did with Mike Plant. Mike has passed away since doing this interview so this is a treasured interview. Here's what we wrote about Mike when he was on the show: Author, photographer, journalist, freelance writer and entrepreneur, Mike Plant has been involved in competitive sports, sports journalism, marketing and event production, for more than 40 years. Mike was an early leader in the sport of triathlon, where as a journalist, photographer, media consultant and publisher he helped introduce the fledgling sport to a generation of mainstream journalists. Triathletemagazine in 1986 called him the “Dean of Triathlon Writers,” a modest accolade considering the number of triathlon there were at the time, but it was, if nothing else, indicative of his influence in the sport.

We are delighted to have Judson Laipply joining us on today's show! Judson is a legendary speaker who achieved viral stardom on YouTube with his video, The Evolution of Dance! Today, he shares the story behind his iconic video and offers us a glimpse into his fascinating journey after his video went viral. Judson has appeared on the Today Show, Ellen, Tosh. O, GMA, Oprah, and more. He is the world's first YouTube celebrity, having had the most-watched video for four years. He has been speaking professionally for over twenty years and resides in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Bio: Judson Laipply M.Ed, CSP is an enigma wrapped in an anomaly contained inside a quandary. Combining comedy and content, laughter and learning, energy, and engagement, Judson gives his audiences immediate joy and lasting impact. He helps audiences understand the difference between change and evolution while teaching them to embrace struggles, and ultimately evolve. He has been featured on the Today Show, Ellen, Oprah, GMA, and more. He is the world's first YouTube Celebrity and his finale “The Evolution of Dance” has over a billion impressions and was the first video ever to hit 100 million views. He's been speaking and performing for over 20 years and has been all around the globe. He is also an Ironman Triathlete, terrible singer, and reformed Kool-Aid eater. Judson's journey Judson's journey mirrors the journey of many others who aspired to make their mark as professional speakers. What set him apart, however, was a fortunate turn of events that propelled him toward viral fame. Back in the 90s, professional speaking was still a relatively exclusive niche. Intrinsically outgoing and driven by a passion for engaging with people, Judson believed in the power of play as a tool for teaching, embracing Plato's timeless wisdom that an hour of play reveals more about a person than a lifetime of conversation. That belief drove him to seek opportunities, from working on a cruise ship as a youth coordinator to orchestrating evening events at a Colorado camp. Those experiences helped to hone his public speaking skills and expanded his horizons. Throughout his journey, Judson remained steadfast in his quest to make speaking a full-fledged career. That aspiration led him to graduate school, as he recognized that a master's degree would solidify his credibility and fortify his commitment to his chosen path. He took advice from a seasoned speaker, learning that the key to leaving an indelible mark lay in crafting memorable moments. Thus, the Evolution of Dance was born. It was a fusion of Judson's modest dancing abilities and a powerful message about change and evolution destined to become an unforgettable hallmark in his career! A Compliment from a Choreographer The success of the Evolution of Dance video allowed Judson to experience incredible opportunities, including appearing in a Weezer music video. An LA choreographer praised his dance, acknowledging his lack of formal training but appreciating the joy and emotion he conveyed through his moves. That compliment marked a significant moment in his career as an entertainer and dancer! The Birth of a Viral Video His video was uploaded to YouTube in 2006. At the time, YouTube was still emerging as a popular website and viral videos were not as commonplace as today. His video gradually gained traction, becoming one of the first viral videos on YouTube. The timing was crucial because the popularity of the video coincided with the rise in prominence of YouTube. The Challenges of Going Viral Going viral was a roller coaster ride for Judson, filled with unexpected twists and turns. His video garnered millions of views, and he received numerous emails and messages from various platforms and media outlets. While tempting offers came in, his sudden fame also presented new challenges, like managing the influx of opportunities and distractions and making choices aligned with his long-term goals and identity as a speaker and influencer. Navigating Success and Opportunities His experience taught him the importance of staying true to his core identity and goals. Amid the overwhelming success and attention, he faced offers to pursue acting, reality TV, and other opportunities that could have taken him off his desired path. However, he chose to prioritize his passion for speaking and comedy, making strategic decisions to maintain his course while also enjoying the benefits of his viral fame. Appearing on Television Shows Judson had the opportunity to appear on various television shows, including Ellen, Oprah, and Good Morning America. His interactions with show hosts varied. Sometimes, he had limited interactions with hosts due to their busy schedules and other high-profile guests. Nonetheless, those appearances were significant milestones in his career, allowing him to reach broader audiences and share his unique brand. Monetizing Viral Videos Monetizing a viral video can be complex, particularly when it contains copyrighted music material. In Judson's case, the original Evolution of Dance video did not generate any direct revenue, as it was uploaded before the establishment of the YouTube partnership program and ad monetization. Regardless, Judson remains content with the cultural impact of his video and the opportunities it brought him without dwelling on the potential revenue it could have generated. Building a Brand When building your brand, you must focus on your goals and maintain momentum. Succeeding as a Speaker Succeeding in the speaking industry involves the performance aspect of captivating audiences on stage and the often-overlooked business side of the profession. Judson took the advice of seasoned professionals to heart and set out on a five-year business plan to establish a strong foundation for his speaking career. Transitioning into Corporate Settings In his quest to move into more corporate settings, Judson capitalizes on his experiences and research. His transition aligns with his desire to evolve his speaking career and explore new opportunities. How Comedy Has Changed Over Time While reflecting on the evolution of comedy over the past 15 years, Judson emphasizes the need for comedians to adapt to changing norms. He points out that shock comedy and humor targeting specific groups have become less acceptable. He praises comics like Brian Regan, Jim Gaffigan, and Mike Birbiglia for their clean and relatable comedic styles. Barton sits down with David to talk about his path as an athlete, father, and fitness instructor. David has completed 17 Ironman Triathlons including the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. They have taught David about discipline, mindset, focusing on the "controllables" and much more. He is also 5 ½ years sober and so much of who he is and what he prioritized today comes from his sobriety and being the best father he can be for his two teenage kids. Behind his exterior of muscles and a big smile, Austin local David Garza is just as compassionate at heart as he lets on. As one of Austin's most motivated fitness instructors, Garza gladly admits to spending time surfing Pinterest for motivating quotes to share with others. Referred to as the “Tony Robbins of spin” by some of his clients, Garza cherishes being able to make others feel special, whether that's by playing someone's favorite song during a class or sitting down with someone for coffee to help them tackle the obstacles in their way to a healthier lifestyle. “I have been pretty blessed to have found this career, where I can use music and fitness and really talk in a deep way of how we are doing,” Garza says. “And, because I have gone through some ridiculously challenging things in my life, I am able to look at somebody and say ‘Hey man, I get it. Let's try and figure out what's going wrong, pinpoint it and see what we can do in a positive way to figure out what we need to get done to get you out of this funk.'”When Garza came out of college, his lifestyle included smoking and drinking, and at one point, he even weighed close to 300 pounds. Coming up on four years of being sober, Garza says he can consider his past experiences struggling with nutrition and unhealthy habits as a blessing, because they make it easy for him to be able to discuss topics that can typically be hard to talk about. “I get to share with a lot of people who are struggling, and I have been down that path, and I feel like I can truly relate to somebody struggling with lots of different things,” Garza says. “While I know there are a lot of challenges out there, I also know that you can overcome those challenges, because you want to be a little bit better than you were yesterday.”Garza is heading to Nice, France in September to compete in another Ironman Triathlon World Championships. To contact David, find him on Instagram @davidgarza1He is currently teaching classes at HIT Athletic in North Central AuUse this link to get a 30 minute discovery call scheduled with Barton if you're interested in his 12 week coaching course. https://calendly.com/bartbryan/30minFor more information about Iron Neck products and to receive a 15% discount on your order, use this link -> https://bit.ly/46ZmUhKTo get the Free weekly workout PDF, just email Barton: Barton@bartonguybryan.comTo hire Barton for a Speaking Event, Click here: https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fcalendly.com%2Fbartbryan%2F30-minute-meeting-clone&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AOvVaw2a_wCbF6yDMtR_5pNdIg4PBarton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/Podcast Website is: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/Become a Patreon Sponsor of the podcast for extra cool stuff including a Free weekly workout program by clicking here - https://themindsetforge.supercast.com/v1?

A retired global technology executive and former Ironman Triathlete at 62 years old, Lee Fogle contracted Covid in The first wave in January 2020. After the resulting two bouts of pneumonia he found himself unable to walk upstairs or do normal activities. He was diagnosed by CTSCAN with end-stage Pulmonary Fibrosis, less than 30% remaining lung function. He was given a life expectancy of 1-3 years unless he could get a lung transplant. As a lifelong biohacker, Lee refused to accept this reduced life expectancy, and although he was unable to walk more than 20 steps without assistance, and required 6 L of supplemental oxygen 24 hours a day he began the process of battling back against the disease. He did exhaustive research and began a gradual, but steadily increasing program of pulmonary rehabilitation and exercise, combined with meditation, nutrition, proper sleep, breath training, and natural supplements. Today he has resumed normal activities of swimming, biking, running, playing pickle, ball and golf, and he's living, a full and active life. He has written a book, A Matter of Life and Breath (available on Amazon) which chronicles, his dramatic health decline and ultimately recovery. He shares the 7 Steps to Recovery in his book. Today he serves as an ambassador to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, and volunteers his time in hospice and memory care facilities as a Reiki practitioner.
