Mark is now nearing 32 years of age and is doing well both health and career wise but unfortunately, Michael passed away on July 30th of 2004, only 52 days after his diagnosis.
It may be just the start of the new year, but for the thousands of people planning to run in the 2025 Boston Marathon in April, the season is already here. One of the Marathon participants will be Haverhill native Jillian Lemieux. For her, running the Marathon means more than finishing the 26.2-mile course, it's means raising money to help find a cure for cancer. Lemieux, a recent guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program explained she ran cross country and track at Haverhill High School, but was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma just before graduation in 2016. Her coach, Mike Maguire, helped her through those times“When I was getting diagnosed, he was big support for me. I remember when it was right around this big meet that we were going to, it was a big exciting meet, but I had gotten a biopsy right before that, so basically, he allowed me to do whatever I could. He didn't push me. He said ‘I want you to be comfortable and be good.' He's just always been a support, and even during my treatments he would text me and wish me good luck for the next treatment. He even allowed me to run with the team on weeks that I felt good, which gave me such a sense of normalcy,” she said.Because of her illness, Lemieux delayed entering UMass Lowell, where she majored in psychology with a minor in public health. She now works in administration at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Lemieux's mother also had the same diagnosis when she was teenager in the 1980s. Her treatment was successful but, due to the limited medical knowledge at the time, her mother received too much radiation and eventually developed breast cancer, from which she passed away.“I was treated at Dana Farber for six months and I received chemo, and the care that I received there was really exceptional. My doctor went above and beyond just treating me. She really cared deeply about treating me as a person and me as a young adult. She took all of my own adolescent concerns about my hair falling out, and everything, it was as important to her as it was to me.”Lemieux is looking to raise $10,000 for her Boston Marathon run, and is slightly more than a quarter of the way to her goal, which also includes training for the race with the help of Maguire who has developed a program for her. It's a program that, on some days, would qualify for a half marathon, covering 13.1 miles.“I haven't signed up for a half (marathon) to do during my training but there are some training days where it is going to come out to a half marathon, so I guess I might as well sign up for one,” she says. And even though it has been eight years since high school, Lemieux still remembers her time for the mile—5:31.Lemieux will run the Boston Marathon April 21. Investigative producer, Nancy Moscatiello, uncovered a scam so outrageous it hid in plain sight for nearly a decade - at the heart of it, a charming, young Christian. Amanda C. Riley started a blog when she was 'diagnosed' with Hodgkins Lymphoma. It was 2012, blogging was just starting to gain traction on the internet and the tragic story of the young mum of two, dying from cancer, soon captured the hearts of a church community, then America. As hashtag Team Amanda went viral, the money for 'treatment' came pouring in, but then an investigative producer received an anonymous tip, and decided to take a closer look. The story of the unravelling that followed became a hit podcast series 'Scamanda'. Kathryn spoke to the investigative producer behind the scenes, Nancy Moscatiello.

As a child, Molly Pratt had a fear of medical facilities. Today, you'll hear how her perspective changed. She's now a BSN, RN in Pediatrics at Beaumont Children's at Corewell Health's Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan.Molly was an active 16 year-old high school student when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Her first round of treatment involved outpatient chemotherapy, but she eventually needed a bone marrow transplant, which she received in 2017. Her priorities shifted from extracurricular activities and college tours to her inpatient recovery. But her hospital stay changed her perspective. Her nurses became her social circle, playing card games with them late at night. Inspired by her care, she decided to follow in their footsteps. She now provides the same level of compassion to the kids she works with. She's able to relate to their experiences, having been through the process herself. In fact, she just had her final 6 month checkup, and she got to spend time with her patients in clinic, as a patient herself.Molly leaves us with inspiring advice about not taking any day for granted, and having the confidence to accomplish whatever it is you set your mind to.ResourcesNational Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Thank you to our sponsors. We first met the incredible Sharde Fultz in our very first season of Marrow Masters, back in 2019. We wanted to reconnect with her as one our our "survivors who thrive" this season. In 2009, Sharde was a college student, living on campus as a dance major with big dreams. Then she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Following chemotherapy and radiation, Sharde received an an allogeneic bone marrow transplant in 2011. Having to leave school, she immersed herself in online support forums for young adult cancer patients. When Sharde returned to school, between her recovery and chronic GVHD, she had to come to terms with some physical limitations. While she still had a passion for dance, she'd need to pivot. Her time interacting with fellow cancer survivors really sparked something in her. She wanted to be able to related to not just other patients, but also people who looked like her. She could fight against some of the inequities in our health care system.Sharde connected with an organization called Next Step, which sends people on "campferences" - part camp, part conference. She attended a campference in 2010, and now works for the organization. Speaking engagements turned into a facilitator role for young adult cancer camps. She's now the conference director, and is working toward a degree in social work.Sharde's advice for fellow cancer survivors is to change how you think about time, and don't compare your journey to anyone else's progress.Next Step Fund website: https://www.nextstepnet.org/Cassie Hines Shoes Cancer: https://cassiehinesshoescancer.org/Stupid Cancer: https://stupidcancer.org/First Descents: https://firstdescents.org/Camp Mak-A-Dream: https://www.campdream.org/Other ResourcesNational Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Thank you to our sponsors. This week we're talking to Tori McGee, who is a two time Hodgkins Lymphoma survivor, stem cell survivor and Guillain-Barre Syndrome warrior. She has now been in remission since last March 2022! She shared with us how important it is to listen to your body rather than just go through the motions of life and accept not feeling great. Tori also opens up about how before her diagnosis she was always go go go and never took breaks or time for herself, and now moving forward how important that is her for her and her health. She talks about the process of getting diagnosed and how scary it was seeing her scan results for the first time and how due to the size of her tumor she wasn't able to do anything in regards to fertility prior to treatment. Tori also walks us through the stem cell transplant process and how it went for her, and how she ended up also getting diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the nerve endings. She provides some amazing advice and tips on how she stays so positive and has such a great perspective on life, taking one day at a time and prioritizing your health. You can check out Tori's website at iamstoritelling.com and follow her in Instagram at @storitelling. As a 13 year old from Southern California Russ Eisenman listened to KROQ, stole quarters from his step-father's nightstand and went to Tower Records in Campbell to buy cassettes recommended to him by one of the store's clerks. This opened up Russ' depth and knowledge of popular music. Many years later Russ Eisenman started with Tower Records working at Tower.com . By 2002 Russ was Tower's Chief Marketing Officer. And that clerk from the Campbell store? He rose to Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Universal Music Group, as Russ learned from a chance meeting years later. But back to Russ Eisenman…how does a guy who started off studying psychology, finished with a Masters Degree in Sports Management end up as Chief Marketing Officer for Tower Records? “Stalking Russ and Michael Solomon” is one answer. A background in one of the pioneering internet businesses of the 1990's (“before Google, before Expedia”) certainly helped. A drive and resolve after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma as a college student (he got through his treatments listening to The Smashing Pumpkins' “Siamese Dream” repeatedly) might have been a factor.Starting with Tower.com in 1999 under Mark Bressler, Russ worked alongside Jon Fiedner and Mike Farrace. Behind the scenes trying to get Retail Ops to embrace the Tower.com brand in the stores was an uphill battle. In this episode Russ Eisenman takes us behind the scenes of those heady and eventually turbulent days of Tower Records. He describes what he and his team contributed and what he witnessed during that time.

Angela Lee was playing basketball on her school team as a 13 year old in 1984 when she first noticed swelling near her neck. After her basketball coach told her that the swelling was not normal Angela went to get it checked out and was immediately put into the hospital with an eventual diagnosis of Stage 2 Hodgkins Lymphoma. Her treatment included 50 radiation sessions and a conclusion from her oncologist that because of this treatment , Angela would have a number of late effects from her cancer battle. This correct statement has been proven out over the years with Angela's battles with her thyroid, blockages in two carotid arteries, women's issues, and a recent Stage 1 Breast Cancer diagnosis.Through it all Angela has survived quite nicely for the past 38 years, as she originally became her own patient advocate and took that to the next level and beyond as she is now a very active advocate for many patients in the Pediatric Cancer field .

My guest today is Jasmine Mariani, I discovered Jasmine through a friend who shared her instagram profile with me — Jasmine was seeking a place to share her journey of being diagnosed with cancer and moving through treatment, as well — arriving back into her past life after diagnosis… feeling like she had in a sense “lost” time. What struck me most about Jasmine was her desire to share the rawness of her story — the things she feels like ‘people were not talking about openly' in terms of moving through the process of cancer. At 28 years old, Jasmine was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. This episode, Part I & II is her intimate recollection on this point of time in her life story. Jasmine's perspective on her journey is truly gracious in the most humble of ways, this is one of the most inspiring conversations I have ever had. Jasmine is an architect and interior designer by trade. She recently opened a sustainable floral arrangement studio and is co partner of The Shelter Project an NGO based out of Indonesia developed ‘to support communities displaced by natural disasters —' This is Part II of the episode, if you haven't listened to Part I already I highly recommend you do so now. In this Part II of the interview we talk about; - Jasmine's second round of chemotherpay - The death of her dog, Nana (her soul mate) that would be the event to teach her acceptance in life, a point of view she carries into her journey with cancer - Adopting a Buddhist perspective throughout her adulthood - We touch again on this unlearning and relearning of communication that Jasmine went through as one of her greatest lessons - The toxic positivity (and language) around cancer - Dealing with reintegration into 'normal' life and watching everyone around her continue on with their lives - A great shift in self-awareness - Releasing relationships through her process of having cancer ... and so much more Find all the show notes and extra exclusive content on the; Muses of Bella online platform, follow the link BELOW https://musesofbella.substack.com SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ** to join the; FREE Breath Work & Meditation Commitment for this month of November, follow the link BELOW musesofbella.substack.com/p/november-b…d-meditation
In March of 2020, Rhian Barnes of Wales was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma, which was in her bones, bone marrow, blood and elsewhere. Additionally, she also suffered from osteoporosis of the spine. "Most recent project - aatei art brandhttps://www.chensands.com/about-aatei"aatei was created as a response to the flood of support and love I received from the females in my life after being diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Now in remission, I still find myself unable to fully express in words or even actions the deep feelings of love and thankfulness I have for these women. An art course taken on a whim, opened up new creative possibilities for me and what flowed after was a release of these emotions onto paper through the process of mark-making. With aatei, I continue my journey in art and mark-making and with the launch of the Message Print I hope to enable everyone to show love and thanks to the ‘aatei' in their lives."Support the show

Rikki Stern was 20 when after a routine check of her sore throat turned out to be Hodgkins Lymphoma. What followed? IVF, Chemo and recovery. Deanna, her mother, gave up her pursuit of a new career as a landscape designer, she deferred her studies to be her primary carer/nurse/therapist/comedian and shoulder, to cry on. As a mother of 3 kids, it's not the first sacrifice she made for her kids. And if she could do it all again, she wouldn't change a thing! Rikki, in spite of her diagnosis, made a concerted effort to go into her treatment with a positive attitude and not sweating the small stuff. Turning her hair loss into a shaving party, aptly called, "Shave the Date". While going through chemo and then recovery Rikki decided to start Cancer Chicks Australia, after having such a great experience with Cancer Chicks UK.Cancer Chicks Australia has supported hundreds of women through their cancer battles, the wins and the losses. Pre-COVID, the Chicks went on a well-earned retreat, one Rikki hopes to continue, once restrictions ease. If you have recently been diagnosed with Cancer, please join their Facebook Page or donate to their cause, it would mean the world to them! It is easy to judge. It is more difficult to understand. Understanding requires compassion, patience and a willingness to believe good hearts sometimes choose poor methods. Through judging we separate. Through understanding, we grow! STOP the STIGMA..."Momma, all I want is a normal life"... Peyton was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma at age 16. Age 19, he had a full hip replacement due to the extensive treatments that he received battling cancer. He was prescribed pain medications to ease his excruciating pain. Peyton's mother, Kelly feels strongly that transparency is so important in addressing the many issues of addiction. With transparency, people can develop empathy and compassion towards conquering STIGMA. It is up to each individual to open their minds, hearts and souls ... Listen & Learn!
In this special episode, host Elizabeth Hopkins acknowledges the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001. This episode is also a check in on how well Congress is living up to its promises to more than 24,000 first responders and heroes. Introduced in 2006 and finally signed into law on January 2, 2011, the World Trade Center Health Program was designed to provide for the physical and mental healthcare for first responders. It should come as no surprise that the program was outsourced to a private, for profit company (United Healthcare). How has this worked 20 years later? Elizabeth has a conversation with Michael Gavin, a paramedic from Boston who is among the thousands of heroes called into duty that day. Mike tells us his harrowing story of that day, and the weeks of 12-hour shifts as he and his fellow responders worked endlessly to help in any way they could. As anyone could imagine, Mike suffered for his time at Ground Zero, experiencing substance abuse disorder, PTSD, and ultimately Hodgkins Lymphoma, which happens to be most diagnosed cancers among the 9/11 survivors.Listening to Mike's journey from that day two decades ago to the present, it is almost unbelievable to hear about the re-traumatization Mike and others are experiencing. For more on Mike's experience, you can find his book "Facing It: Unseen Injuries of a 9/11 First Responder," on Amazon https://amzn.to/39W9oix Thank you for listening and look for Episode 8 on November 5.
Caroline Rose went from running marathons to being a cancer patient with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. She shares her journey of faith, endurance and how a dog she rescued, saved her in return. Episode Discussion PointsHow she reacted to the news of her sudden life detour of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. How her type A personality was able to learn (eventually) that she really doesn't control anything. God is in control and we can trust Him. The wise advice her doctor uncle gave her which gave her the courage to fight. How rescuing a dog then helped her through subsequent treatments Why she and her husband froze embryos after she went into remission. How her son was a medical miracle Sometimes we have to wait for miracles to happen The angel who came to help Caroline when she relapsed a third time. The four types of prayers: “help,” “thank you,” “whatever” and “oh well.” There is an emotional component to healing, fighting and surviving. The reason why Caroline kept fighting when she wanted to give up and quit chemo. The shifting of hope that takes place after someone you love dies. Hope isn't always getting the outcome we want. It is getting to the point where we can accept the situation, be okay, and keep going. Listen to your “God-voice” or intuition. Everyone's journey is unique. How she emerged from the struggle with cancer different than she was before. This also affected her loved ones around her. Favorite QuoteOne of my favorite things Caroline said is, “We can't fully live unless we hope.” So, if you are struggling, keep your flicker of hope alive. Believe in God and that with His help you can get through anything. You then will live, and live fully.
