Once upon a time, thousands of years ago, ancient peoples began the practice of making annual promises to the gods, or perhaps their king or queen about loyalty to the throne. That practice has endured to this day. We have all made them: more exercise, weight loss, a focus on spirituality perhaps. From experience, we probably all know that by the summer, if not by the spring, that those resolutions fall by the wayside. In fact, almost 80% of such resolutions fail by February. For New Jersey small business owners, entrepreneurs and those participating in the gig economy, life is now tougher in New Jersey. New Jersey just made life very difficult for all employers in every industry, specifically small businesses. In New Jersey, business owners can now be criminally charged and fined up to $5,000.00 per day for misclassifying workers as independent contractors. We go firmly into legal territory on this episode. Taylor Swift is waging a very public campaign against the company that owns many of her master recordings. Her audience seemingly is following suit. Social media is providing people a way to broadcast threats. We live in divided times. A private equity firm ends up with control of Ms. Swift’s master recordings. Analysis of the real root of this story is in this episode: the negotiation of the original licensing or production contracts and how those contracts can control the future conduct of the parties.

"It represents community, partnership, collaboration." In Pittsburgh's northside district, Al Grasso and his partners are not only building a craft brewery and tap house, they are building a community in a neighborhood not far from where they grew up. It is, in many ways, a classic Pittsburgh story. Kids grow up, they leave, they return and they stay for the long haul. The founders of Allegheny City Brewing are doing the hard work, making connections with and between patrons that will endure long term. Every so often it's time to spruce the joint up. Since the last episodes aired, I wrote and published a book: risk, create, change: a survival guide for startups & creators, which is now available in paperback and Kindle on Amazon.com. If you are interested in the content of the podcast, the book is pretty closely aligned and will aid you your professional journey. http://riskcreatechange.com Then I went and recorded some new bumpers for the show (who says you can't have a soundtrack comprised of solo drums?), we did some new voiceovers, and put everything together. Mediocrity is not Bill Childs’ friend. He refuses to be pals with “good enough.” Will never be besties with “just O.K.” And “phoning it in” is not part of his #squadlife. As a marketer and a creative, Bill believes in pushing projects as far as they can go – then pushing it a little more. He’s also someone who believes that good is the enemy of great. He is currently the Director of Marketing and Communications at Trifecta Technologies, where he’s responsible for leading the marketing team as they develop, coordinate, and implement marketing strategies and content for the Trifecta brand. Childs spent 2 years as an Art Director for Adams Outdoor Advertising and 10 years previously as a graphic designer at The Morning Call. His entire 32-year career has been focused on creative design and strategic messaging for a multitude of clients that include Coca-Cola, Coors-Light, Cars.com, Coachmen, Miller-Lite, Yuengling and Takamine Guitars to name a few. There is one truth I’ve learned in almost 20 years of representing small business owners. The greatest obstacle to progress in starting a creative project or business venture is the fear of failure, or the fear of non-acceptance by one’s peers. There’s fear, and then there’s fear. The former is healthy, the latter is the kind that keeps you up at night, and plagues you into paralysis when you feel isolated. Here’s another truth: all fears are not equal. In this mini-episode, I’m joined by psychologist Robert Gordon, Ph.D. We’ll talk about the difference between rational and irrational fears, what fear really represents and how it can be defeated. Keep building the future, it’s closer than you think.

Today’s episode is about persuasion, and how we process the world these days. We are entering into a phase in American history that’s littered with some embarrassingly bad rhetoric, and a lot of screaming at one another, when we should all be talking to one another. How we talk to one another matters. In earlier episode we talked about the words we use and what they can mean. But today this episode is about the art of persuasion… Because it is indeed an art.
