Originally dropped November 29, 2022 How would you feel or react if you suddenly found yourself on the brink of death? In today's conversation, Adam speaks with former Marine, Mike Ergo, as he shares his journey through death and rebirth. When people were sitting at home watching on television the horror unfolding in the war in Fallujah, Mike was actually there – fighting for his life and the country. Today, Mike has found meaning and fulfillment in endurance sports and events, including the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in 2017. He is returning to Kona in October 2023 to compete and carry the flag for the Gold Star Initiative, in honor of the service and sacrifice of our fallen heroes. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Taking something positive from his life-altering experience Surrendering to the higher power Understanding that acceptance is not an agreement Mood follows action The big spark that made him decide to change his life The parallels between serving in the war and doing Ironman About the Gold Star Initiative and how it has grown The Litany of Fear taken from Frank Herbert's book, Dune Episode Highlights: [09:20] Taking Something Positive From His Life-Altering Experience Although Mike was fighting for his life, another part of him just surrendered to the moment and didn't resist it. He wasn't trying to die, but he accepted where he was. He wasn't happy that the war caused his existential life-altering experience, but since he was there, he was glad to have something positive come out of it. [16:58] Acceptance is Not Equal to Agreement There are a lot of things that are out of our control. It's important to come to a place of acceptance, but just because you accept something doesn't mean you're okay with it. You don't like it but you accept that it's there. When you accept, you have more power to change what you can in your life and influence the lives of other people, rather than wasting that energy trying to prevent things from happening. [38:33] Love Transcends Death If you dig into any challenge or problem or adversity, you will find different layers. There could be numbness on top and anger below that. There's also that layer of pain, hurt, sadness, or all kinds of unpleasant feelings. But below all of that is where you can tap into that love again. [41:32] The Gold Star Initiative The Gold Star Initiative is part of the Ironman Foundation, where Ironman athletes play a part in the healing process of the families of our fallen heroes. The veteran carries the flag in honor of a fallen military member and the family also becomes a part of that experience to celebrate their loved one's life. The veteran will carry a flag with a streamer that has the fallen member's rank and name. The family hands the flag to the veteran for the run. Once at the finish line, the veteran hands the flag back to the family as a symbol of healing. After coming back from war, battling survivor's guilt, and ultimately overcoming addiction, Mike found healing in endurance sports. Today, he carries the American flag during Ironman races on behalf of a Gold Star Family that has lost their son or daughter to war. Some of the topics shared in this recap include: - How to acknowledge and show appreciation for veterans - Going from suffering to serving - How to honor Gold Star Families - Love transcends death - Connection to a higher power in the midst of surrender - Acceptance as a courageous act If you'd like to learn more about the Gold Star Initiative, visit the Ironman Foundation and find out how you can support this incredible organization.

After being on AGT in 2009, they landed a headline show on the Las Vegas Strip where we performed for 10 years. In 2016, Justin developed CHAOS & KINDNESS which launched as a global television show dedicated to showing the chaos of a rock band integrated with spreading kindness across the world. He is dedicated to demonstrating that you can accomplish anything you focus on, and can overcome your fears while working through your own mental health setbacks while living a more positive lifestyle. He outlines this philosophy in his book, ONE LIFE ONE LEGACY. Away from creating or executing, he's either training in the gym or on the road. To burn energy and steam and to keep creativity flowing, he remains a competitive CrossFit athlete and an Ironman competitor. It's important to him to push himself to the limit, especially when he can positively impact others by doing so. Justin is father of two beautiful daughters and am dedicated to teaching them that giving back and exhibiting kindness creates a better world. Through the IRONMAN Foundation, Justin raised over $50,000. Justin signed up for his first triathlon at Timberman 70.3 and shared his experience through his YouTube channel. Our guest Melina Timson, a triathlon coach and Women for Tri Ambassador, recently completed a 30KM UltraOceanman Kalamata, Greece, open water swim. She walked into our recording studio with pictures of a swollen tongue from a condition called salt mouth that open water swimmers have from long durations of time in salt water. This was only one of the many challenges that she faced during this mind boggling race, including choppy conditions and sea sickness, which she tells us made her want to give up several times while on the course. But there was always something that kept her going that day. The 43-year-old triathlete, who has a background in sport and exercise science, had given up racing after her teenage years but returned physically and, more crucially, mentally stronger to sports at the age of 36. She completed the Ironman distance Challenge Roth in Germany, qualified for and finished the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2019, and continues taking on challenges that push her limits. At the same time, as a Dubai-based coach, she has been helping others achieve their triathlon goals and advocates for more inclusion and diversity within the athlete community through her role as a Women for Tri Ambassador. She also participated in leading the first Triathlon Training Camp for Women in Saudi Arabia earlier this year. In this no-holds-barred chat, Melina opens up about her journey into Triathlon, her bounce back after long Covid, how she returned from the brink of almost giving up in the UltraOceanman race and her role in furthering women's participation in the sport. "At first it was a bit difficult, talking about it and reliving it, but now I see how powerful that can be. You wouldn't believe how many stories I hear. I swear every time somebody crashes really bad on their bike, they reach out to me. It's incredible—I don't think people realize that about themselves when they reach out, but literally they will be in the hospital messaging me, ‘How did you get through this? How quickly did you come back?' I say, ‘if you're already thinking about it, that right there goes to show how strong you are. If you want to come back, you will once you're clear.'”   The first time she lined up for a triathlon in 2013, Sika Henry was hooked—but she noticed something out on the course. Or rather, she noticed what wasn't there: any other people of color competing alongside her.   From that moment, she dedicated herself to becoming the first Black woman to earn her pro card in the sport, hoping to show others what was possible. A serious bike crash during a race in 2019 nearly derailed her. But with such a powerful mission, she returned to finish what she started.   In this week's episode, Sika shares the key question from her dad, and the messages from fans, that kept her moving; the creative solutions her coach developed to help her train during recovery; and more about her efforts to increase diversity in the sport through efforts such as the Ironman Foundation's Race For Change initiative.    New this season: We're asking listeners to support the show directly, which you can do at buymeacoffee.com/rebound. In this episode: Are you a morning person? An evening person? Something in between? Whatever it is, that chronotype has implications for when you are likely to best perform as an athlete during the day. Circadian rhythm refers to our internal clock and it has control over many physiologic processes. It turns out that it also has effects on athletic performance but it can be manipulated. In this episode I review the science on what time of day we perform our best and how we can manipulate our biology to work for us when we want it to. Plus, an interview with Detroit attorney and Ironman Foundation fundraiser Bill Ogden. Bill has had an eventful 2020 and 2021 in and out of our sport and he shares his experiences good and bad to help us all see the good that is in triathlon. As riders neared the finish line, the sky opened up and everyone below was pelted by ping pong-sized hailstones. The riders were just a few kilometers from the finish line at the top of the Col de Porte in the southwest part of France when the conditions turned bad.  Cycling group Israel Start-Up Nation described the situation as "total chaos and mayhem."  Belgian cyclist Tim Declercq was one of many riders that ended up with large red welts on his back due to the hailstones. Episode 27: Ayaka "Faith" Suzuki (ASIJ 2006) Faith explains to Nick what triathlons and Iron Man races are, and the two go on to discuss how the demographics of triathlons compare to the demographics of marathon runners. Faith explains to Nick why triathlons have gained a reputation of being a sport for the wealthy, and what type of data has been used to substantiate these claims. Faith explains to Nick that however, it is still possible for someone to participate with a lesser income, but that the main barrier of entry is purchasing a high function bicycle, which many people spend a few thousand dollars on. Faith explains to Nick her personal experience as a triathlete, and how her participation in triathlons are often not a cheap activity. The events often cost at least $400 per event and flights/hotels on top of that. Faith explains to Nick why the cost of triathlons is more expensive than marathons, and how security, safety, and staffing often increase the cost in comparison to your local home town 5K. Faith mentions how weight can work for or against you when it comes to biking in triathlon, especially depending on the course's wind and uphill/downhill. Faith explains to Nick how categorization is done in triathlon, and how she hopes to see more women get involved in the sport, especially in Asia. She is part of a non-profit with a mission to advocate for a higher percentage involvement with triathlons, and why it's so important to not only get a woman involved with triathlons but various minority groups more involved in a sport which has been historically heavily white and male. Ayaka "Faith" Suzuki (ASIJ 2006) Age Group Triathlete Born in Singapore and raised in Malaysia, Faith graduated from ASIJ in 2006. She obtained her BA from Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX) in 2010 and M.Ed from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) in 2014. After ten international moves in 30 years, Faith has spent the past 3 years working in sports event marketing and management. Actively involved in the world of triathlon and the local swim/bike/run communities, Faith is an age-group (amateur) triathlete based in Tokyo. She is part of the IRONMAN Foundation's Women for Tri Ambassador team, supporting female participation initiatives and engaging female athletes across all race distances and athletic abilities. Matt Russell is an American professional triathlete and veteran of the sport. He is dad, a husband, a man with strong faith, an Ironman Foundation ambassador, and a voice for the ALS community on account of very personal experience of losing him mom at a young age to the disease. Matt is a multi-time Ironman and 70.3 champion and is no stranger to racing the best of the best on the big island of Hawaii every October at the Ironman World Championship. Anyone queued into the triathlon world hears athlete after athlete talk about the power and the energy of the big island; Matt is also no stranger to this. His son Makaio was conceived on the island in 2016, and just one year later, while racing on the world's stage of triathlon, Matt almost lost his own. As he reeled down the road at 35 miles per hour on the backside of the bike leg, Matt had no idea that he would be riding the fragile line between life and death in an instant. As he approached an intersection, a car pulled out in front of him, and there was no time to stop. At that moment, the impact between him and the vehicle was imminent. He doesn't remember much about the accident, but what happened that day changed his life forever. His gratitude for life is acute and he makes a practice out of doing things that make him feel alive. Matt realizes that although triathlon fills his heart, he knows there is more to life than sport. Matt considers himself an "Ambassador for Life" and hopes that by sharing his story far and wide he will inspire others to be their best. In this episode, we discuss the accident and how life is different now. He shares his training philosophies as a triathlon coach and as a self-coached athlete. He admits that even after many years of competing he still learns something from every race. He emphasizes the importance of a positive mindset and the bond between happiness and good relationships. We feel blessed to share this heart-felt conversation with the YogiTriathlete community, and we are grateful that Matt's work in the world is not over; there's more in store for him, and we cannot wait to see what unfolds from here. We hope you enjoy the show. Thank you for your support. We wouldn't do this with you! Namaste - Jess

Ironman has grown into a huge, global business and, like many international corporations, they do a lot of work outside of the sport. Ironman does this through The Ironman Foundation (IMF). My guest today is the Executive Director of IMF, Sarah Hartmann. I first met Sarah in Hawaii through one of our previous podcast guests (Derek Fitzgerald) and she asked me if I would like to get involved with some of their projects.  Much of their project work is based around races and host cities, so in recent months they have been doing work in Hawaii (at Ironman time), Panama City, Florida (to continue the rebuilding work after the hurricane in 2018), and Las Vegas (part of a community project to help those affected by the mass shooting in 2017). While many triathletes who compete in Ironman events may be aware of the Foundation, not many know enough about the good work that they do, so in this week’s podcast we’re highlighting their work, including: How IMF works, and the involvement of WTC The power of volunteering and why it is good for everyone  Sarah highlights some of the projects that IMF have been involved with and shares her favourite one to date Who actually takes part and how you might end up working alongside “The Voice of Ironman” Mike Reilly How the Foundation helped out at Bolton after the moorland fires which affected IMUK 2018 How you can get involved in an Ironman Foundation project  To find out more about the Ironman Foundation, please CLICK HERE We talked about several topics including the Gold Star Initiative run by Mike Ergo. When we train for or participate in triathlons we often use military terminology to talk about our commitment or about the dark places we go into.  Today’s guest has literally done all that and more.  Mike Ergo served 2 tours in Iraq as a US Marine, and was involved in Operation Phantom Fury, referred to as the 2nd battle of Fallujah which was the bloodiest battle in the war.  In his words, “so many friends had been killed that I consciously accepted that I would eventually die there.”  After being honourably discharged from the military, his life descended into a spiral of drink, drugs, and self-destruction.  That is, until an epiphany moment when he made a change and found endurance sports.  Since then, Mike’s completed several Ironman events, including Kona 2017, and is now an ambassador for The Ironman Foundation.  This is a fascinating conversation, and we touch on some deep dark subjects, including: What actually happens in the moment when you think you’re going to die Suicidal thoughts and spending New Year’s Eve with an M16 rifle in your lap thinking about pulling the trigger . . and why he didn’t How anyone can find light even in dark moments How running and endurance sports in general can make you feel so good Racing Ironman, and why having important people to think about (like fallen comrades) can help get you through those tough miles The discovery that Mike and I competed in Kona on the same day, and how spookily similar our race-day experiences were How mental health issues can affect any one of us at any time, and the importance of having someone to talk to Mike’s work as co-Ambassador for Ironman Foundation’s Gold Star Initiative To find out more about Mike’s work in the mental health field, you can visit his website Transitionsfromwar.com and Facebook page  Facebook.com/transitionsfromwar/   Mike also has his own podcast Age Groupies which you can listen to here:  https://agegroupie.libsyn.com   To find out more about Simon’s coaching please visit his website here. For almost 10 years of his life, my guest on today’s show, Derek Fitzgerald, was just struggling to stay alive.  Firstly he was diagnosed with non Hodgkins Lymphoma, and after surgery and chemotherapy he was clear and in remission only to find that the chemo drugs had damaged his heart.  He was told that his heart was failing, and he spent the next 7 years slowly deteriorating until 2011 when he received a heart transplant.  Since that day he hasn’t looked back.  As you might imagine, from someone who has stared death in the face on a daily basis, Derek has been in a hurry to achieve the seemingly impossible. This is a fascinating and emotional story of one man’s survival against the odds, and after listening you will no longer believe there are limits to doing anything you put your mind to. In this episode you will discover: Why after surgery to remove a tumour in his abdomen, Derek had to learn to walk again before starting chemotherapy  The paradox of wanting heart disease to get worse so you can make it onto the transplant list How a phrase from the film "Shawshank Redemption” epitomises Derek’s life Why Derek feels like he should "Honour the Gift” Organ donations and why it should be an opt-out process and not an opt-in  The journey from heart transplant recipient in Jan 2011 to Ironman fisher in 2013 Becoming the first cancer survivor and heart transplant recipient to complete the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii (2015) Derek is an inspirational person and you can find out more about him by visiting his website Recycledmanspeaks.com You can also follow Derek on Facebook by visiting his page HERE Derek is an ambassador for The Ironman Foundation whose mission is to create positive, tangible change in race communities through grant funding and volunteerism. We're your hosts coaches Rich Soares and Khem Suthiwan and 303 Chief Bill Plock.  Thanks for joining us for another week of endurance interviews and discussion. Our interview this week is with Andrew Talansky, pro cyclist turned pro triathlete in 2017.  Today's show is supported by iKOR Labs.  iKOR is a clean, natural source of recovery enhancing CBD that protects your body from the stresses of training, improves recovery from intense efforts and helps you maintain a positive mental state. Go to www.ikorlabs.com for more details. Thanks to last week's guest, Beth James of Team Liza.  We remarked on this incredible story in recent weeks and figured the timing is perfect to share it with you this week.  This Sunday is Ironman Wisconsin - Beth James and her daughter Liza will be racing as a team. Beth James and her daughter Liza are on a journey together to compete at Ironman Wisconsin September 9th.  Liza suffered from a traumatic brain injury in a car accident fourteen years ago.  Taking inspiration from Rick and Dick Hoyt, Beth and Liza found joy through riding and running outdoors. This is an inspiring interview and story of adversity, love and discovery. Talansky competed in cross-country running at high school in Florida before taking up competitive cycling at age 17. After success in local amateur races, he moved to Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, winning the collegiate national championship race in his freshman year. He left college after one year to join the Amore & Vita team in Italy in 2009, but found the conditions unsatisfactory and returned to the US that spring.[4] He raced in the US in 2009 without team support. After a strong ride at the Tour of the Gila race, he joined Garmin for the 2010 season, moving up to the professional team for 2011, where he made the top ten at the 2011 Tour de Romandie.   In 2012, Talansky scored his first professional victory in Europe at the Tour de l'Ain, and was named Garmin's lead rider for the 2012 Vuelta a España,[5] finishing seventh on the general classification. In 2013, he came second in Paris-Nice, having led the race for two days, and was selected for the Tour de France for the first time, again making the top ten overall.   He won the 2014 Critérium du Dauphiné, joining a high quality breakaway group on the final stage to overcome a 39-second deficit to overnight race leader Alberto Contador.   He retired from the 2014 Tour de France after a very uncomfortable day on his bike, due to multiple crashes. The broom wagon was following him at the end of the stage.   In September 2017 Talansky announced his retirement from competition via an Instagram post. However, the following month he indicated that he was now "un-retired" and would take up competing in triathlon   Teasers for topics: 303Merge - Bill Donkey Run Practice - Khem TO and losing the pink helmet AG World Champs in Gold Coast; Stacia and Kevie - https://goldcoast.triathlon.org/2018_itu_world_triathlon_grand_final/ Use of anti-biotics and training or racing - https://runnersconnect.net/antibiotics-and-running-performance/ Ironman Title Sponsor Amazon - http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/world-championship.aspx#/axzz5QwfJtuZ5 Video of the week: Tim and Rinny Show I lost the Pink helmet bet Make a donation at their Ironman Foundation site of $20 and be entered in a draw Talks about how the ride up to Hawi last year surprised him with 330 watts and he's preparing for that effort in his training Keep watching and there's a video of Tim getting out of his high altitude tent   Upcoming Interviews: Coach Matt Fitzgerald - author of The Endurance Diet, 80/20 Running and now 80/20 Triathlon with David Warden Jim Vance - will join us soon to take the discussion of Today's Plan to the practical application as a coach or athlete and talk in greater detail about how it can make you more effective and efficient as a coach Todd Carver, Cliff Simms and Franko Vaterott- co-founder of Retul and now working with Specialized. Subscribe on iTunes / Subscribe on Stitcher / Subscribe on Google Play Two weeks ago, we had the honor of joining Sarah Hartman, Executive Director of the Ironman Foundation at the finish line of Ironman Boulder, from 10PM to midnight, cheering on the day's final finishers. If you're looking for some motivation, something to pump you up on your next long run, this podcast is for you! For those of you who don't know, and Ironman is a 140.6 mile triathlon consisting of: (1) a 2.4 mile open-water swim; (2) a 112 mile bike; and then (3) a full 26.2 mile marathon. Though I've done six of them, it still seems impossible as I type this. But as you'll hear in this podcast, anything is possible! In this podcast, you'll hear how Ironman and the IMF are changing lives and communities around the world. You'll also get to meet two Ironman legends, Scott Rigsby (the first double leg amputee to finish Kona), and Dave Orlowski (who finished in 3rd place in the very first Ironman, 40 years ago in Honolulu, Hawaii). (By the way, here's a photo of Dave Orlowski in his jean shorts for the very first Ironman.  He borrowed the bike!) My interview with Sarah takes about 25 minutes.  But then I just left my recorder running as she and I stay in the finisher's chute for over an hour until the last finishers cross the line. And that's where the real magic happens! If you ever have the opportunity to attend an Ironman, go to the finish line from 10 to midnight.  It's one of the greatest things you will ever witness or participate in.  Whereas the race winners finished nearly eight hours earlier, the people finishing in these hours have been out there all day, since six in the morning. Some of these athletes are in their 20's.  Some are in their 70's.  Some are finishing in their projected times. Others may have hoped to finish sooner, but had a rough day.  (It was hot and windy!)  But in all cases, these athletes have just written an epic story for themselves. This podcast will PUMP YOU UP! You will feel the music. You will feel the crowd. You'll hear legendary Mike Reilly announcing every finisher as they cross the finish line: YOU ARE AN IRONMAN! Here's a rough outline to guide you through the podcast: Interview with Sarah Hartman, Executive Director of the Ironman Foundation. Special appearance by Scott Rigsby. Short interlude, as Sarah and I head into the finisher's chute to cheer on the finishers. Interview with Dave Orlowski in the finisher's chute.  (Amazing!!) Cheering on all the finishers, with the final official finisher coming in a mad dash to cross the line with one second before the cutoff! EPIC!! Imagine: as even a few more racers finish after the official time cutoff. (They're each still an Ironman in my book!) Huge thanks to Sarah and the Ironman Foundation for inviting me to share this experience with them. This was so much fun! #AnyThingIsPossible #EveryMileMatters!   The post Sarah Hartman, Executive Director of the Ironman Foundation: Anything is Possible! appeared first on Charity Miles.
