3 Things That Aren't Working In Detroit

Happy snowmageddon, Detroit! Hope you’re all staying nice and warm. On today’s episode, we dig out of the early and record-breaking November snowstorm and dig into a few of the things that aren’t working around town. Specifically, we talk about: That WXYZ investigation into a Detroit landlord whom the city has forgiven more than $1 million in unpaid taxes, fees and other fines he owes. It was part of the land swap the city orchestrated to pave the way for the new Fiat Chrysler auto assembly plant on the city’s east side. Now he’s screwing over families buying homes on land contracts. The Ilitches are at it again in District Detroit. Thanks to the Detroit Greenways Coalition, we know that the Ilitch family wants the city to grant it an easement over Henry and Sproat streets, which both run right alongside the Little Caesars Arena. Good idea? Or The Best Idea? And there’s a shortage of liquor, fueled by software glitches at one of the three companies the state authorizes to distribute booze to bars, restaurants and retail stores. Michigan’s Prohibition-era booze laws strike again. Last but not least, sportswriter Fletcher Sharpe joins us to talk about the Detroit Pistons at 4-7 in the early going, plus three Detroit-area soccer teams not named Detroit City FC that are making moves. Detroit Bike City? This Ranking Says No, Plus 3 Things To Know Around Town

Detroit: A great bike city, or the best bike city? We dive into that superwonky argument in the wake of Detroit’s abysmal showing in PeopleForBike’s annual rankings of the Best Cities For Bikes in 2019. Detroit scored a lowly 1.6 out of 5 stars, the same as 2018, despite all the work that’s been done to install protected bike lanes, bike traffic counters and other bike-friendly infrastructure improvements. Ferndale and Ann Arbor both scored higher, at 3.0 stars each. But the organization’s methodology spurred a rebuttal piece by Todd Scott over at Detroit Greenways Coalition. Who’s right? We talk about it. Also on today’s show: Detroit’s new streetlights are already going dark, adding to a familiar narrative about the city with broken streetlights. Republicans on Tuesday approved a bill that would reform Michigan’s no-fault auto insurance system, despite objections from those radical leftists at the Michigan Health and Hospital Association. The bill now heads to the state House. And we offer our suggestions for where to go to celebrate Mother’s Day. You can also read it here. Thanks for listening to Daily Detroit. Some Big Bike And Trail Projects Are Coming In 2019, With Todd Scott, Detroit Greenways Coalition

Happy Tuesday, automatons! Today your Daily Detroit gets wonky and talks all about bike lanes and trail projects with Todd Scott of the Detroit Greenways Coalition. He put together an interesting (and lengthy!) list of bike and trail projects due to see action in 2019. They include groundbreaking at the long-delayed Uniroyal site near the bridge to Belle Isle, movement on the long-planned Joe Louis Greenway (formerly known as the Inner Circle Greenway) and new protected bike lanes on Grand River Avenue in northwest Detroit. As Scott says, it’s remarkable how far the city has come with its bicycling and greenways infrastructure in just the last few years. And it’s remarkable that it’s all happening here in the Motor City, a place that’s been indelibly built and shaped by the automobile — and not always for the better. If you’re a fan of Jane Jacobs and urbanism, you don’t want to miss this show. And if you like what we’re doing, considering supporting us through our Patreon campaign. Have feedback for the show? Tom Page, Detroiter, talks about his law enforcement career in Detroit and LA. Tom's Alma Mater is U of D. where Criminal Justice is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Education. Tom serves on the Dean's Advisory Board. Tom integrates his love of Detroit into his volunteer efforts to encourage people to use a bike for recreation, exercise and learning about all the good things in Detroit. Tom organizes and supports so many of the daily bike events in Detroit that are much more than a bike ride. I Tom used to come into Emily's Across the Street in late 70's-80's. We reconnected at the Shinola Detroit Block Party June 2014. He had on his "Detroit Cops are Tops" shirt from Emily's with a fun story to go with it and a big hug. We've been in touch ever since. Check out his facebook page: Thomas E Page ... it's all supporting the nice things going on in Detroit. The night we reconnected at the Shinola Block Party, I also met Todd Scott from Detroit Greenways Coalition and we talk about Todd's efforts as well as Jason Hall and Mike McKool's Slow Roll Detroit.
