Talking Sports Books" here is the video edition of the new show with Manchester journalist Dom Farrell talking about his new book release "Glory Days For The Waifs And Strays" On 12 May 2019, Manchester City became the first team to retain the Premier League title for a decade. Twenty years earlier, the same club was slogging its way out of Division Two, having sunk ignominiously to the third tier, its glory days well behind it.Ordinarily, the tale of a sleeping giant awaking to stomp over the competition would be celebrated far beyond the core fan base. But City's success is tied inextricably to its takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, an event that altered the club's horizons beyond any plausible recognition. The injection of billions of pounds into the club amid accusations that Abu Dhabi is ‘sportswashing' its reputation tarnished City's treble-winning season in 2022/23, as have serious charges of financial impropriety from the Premier League.Glory Days for the Waifs and Strays charts this route from noble rags to uncomfortable riches and unpacks what it means when a team's lowest lows and highest highs occur improbably within a generation. It amounts to a story like no other in modern football: the distance travelled from there to here, the greats on either side of the white line and the uniquely divisive means by which this has been achieved.Manchester City have defined an era in English football. This is the tale of how that happened and why it matters.ORDER HERE https://amzn.to/3LGbclL

Could we be looking at back-to-back promotions or are we getting a little bit too ahead of ourselves? Michael, Aaron, and Andrew look back at the last couple of weeks that's seen East Fife win one and draw one in league play and continue to do well with another win in the Challenge Trophy. All of which has been done while missing a number of key starters due to injury. It's been incredible stuff and bodes well for what might be to come for the rest of the season. Flag on the Play, Part 1: Holding // Eric Robertson

Victory Fellowship Church Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2025 42:57

Are you holding onto the past? In this message, Pastor Eric Robertson shares about the penalty called "Holding". Spiritual holding happens when we cling to the past in ways that block our growth in the present.Israel struggled with this during their time in the wilderness. And that's often when we struggle with it too—during seasons of transition or uncertainty: a new job, role, baby, diagnosis—anything that shakes us. In those moments, we often crave what used to be.Read Numbers 11:1–35Israel, on their way to the Promised Land, longed for their past—even their slavery. When we hold onto the past, we risk never arriving at the future God has for us.Naming the SeasonTo follow God forward, you have to name the season you're in. Israel didn't realize their wilderness was temporary.God gave them manna—which means "What is it?" They couldn't name it, and that confusion stalled their progress. You can't recognize a new season until you understand the one you're in.God's plan was milk and honey—but they had to pass through the manna first. If you hold onto where you were, you risk staying where you are.Observations: What Are You Holding Onto?Old Sins Israel longed for the "good food" of Egypt, forgetting it came with chains. Old sins might feel comforting in hard times, but they are distorted memories. Desire without discernment leads to destruction.Old Comforts Numbers 11:4 uses the phrase hit'avu ta'avah—literally "they craved a craving." Their disordered desires led to Kibroth Hattavah—"the grave of craving." Seeking comfort over calling can keep us in the wilderness longer. James 1:15 warns us that craving gives birth to sin, which leads to death.Old Seasons Even good seasons must end for growth. Like a plant that must be repotted, growth requires discomfort. John 15:1-2 reminds us God prunes us to make us more fruitful. Holding onto the old stunts our spiritual development.Attitude, Action, and AtmosphereAttitude: Manna was provision, not punishment. Don't curse the very thing carrying you forward.Action: Israel complained instead of moving. Our actions shape our outcomes.Atmosphere: The rabble influenced Israel. Voices around you matter—surround yourself with faith, not fear.ConclusionHolding on to old sins, comforts, or seasons may mean they're holding on to you.But God's plan was never the grave of craving. He was leading them to Hazeroth—a place of structure. So ask yourself:Are you holding on to old sins, old comforts, or an old season?Let go—and let God lead you forward.

When the United Nations Actually Mattered: Remembering the Burmese Schoolteacher who Ran the U.N. in its Glory Days

Keen On Democracy

How to bring peace to Gaza and Ukraine? Maybe the United Nations can help. Or, sadly, maybe not. But there really was a time, in the second half of the 20th century, when the United Nations could help bring peace to supposedly insoluble wars. The U.N.'s glory days were in the Sixties when it was run by a former Burmese school teacher called U Thant. His incredible story is told by his grandson, the Cambridge University historian Thant Myint-U, in a new book appropriately called Peacemaker. Thant Myint-U reminds us of a halcyon time when the UN Secretary-General could summon presidents at will, mediate between nuclear superpowers, and command respect from Castro to Kennedy. Today's forgotten history reveals how U Thant's intervention during the Cuban Missile Crisis helped prevent nuclear war—a role not-so-surprisingly airbrushed from most American and Soviet accounts. Yes, even in the glory years of the Sixties, the bureaucratized U.N. was far from perfect. But under a dedicated peacemaker like U-Thant it could help bring ceasefires to seemingly endless wars. Like in Ukraine and Gaza. 1. U Thant's crucial role in preventing nuclear war has been erased from history During the Cuban Missile Crisis, U Thant provided the face-saving framework that allowed both Khrushchev and Kennedy to step back from the brink. He articulated the missiles-for-no-invasion deal, gave Khrushchev a neutral party to respond to instead of American ultimatums, and bought Kennedy time against his hawkish advisors. Yet this intervention barely appears in American or Soviet accounts.2. The UN's decline stems from lost enthusiasm on both sides The UN's marginalization wasn't inevitable. It resulted from America's disillusionment after Vietnam-era challenges to its power, combined with a new generation of Third World leaders less interested in the global stage than their predecessors like Nehru, Nasser, and Nkrumah. Both superpowers and smaller nations stopped investing in the institution.3. Decolonization needed the UN's framework to succeed Without the UN providing a structure where newly independent nations had equal status and a voice, decolonization might have resulted in continued informal empire or Commonwealth arrangements. The UN gave these countries both legitimacy and a platform to resist neo-colonial pressures.4. The next Secretary-General selection could determine the UN's survival With the current term ending in 2025, the choice of the next leader—requiring agreement between Trump, Putin, and Xi Jinping—may be the UN's last chance for relevance. Without strong leadership focused on the UN's core peacemaking function, the institution may not survive.5. The UN worked best when it rejected Cold War binary thinking The non-aligned movement wasn't passive neutrality but active rejection of a world divided into camps. Leaders like U Thant succeeded by creating space for all parties to negotiate without choosing sides, offering an alternative to the superpower confrontation that risked nuclear war.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Nick is joined by Dan Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter for a sharp, funny breakdown of the new season of Big Brother and the cast of lovable idiots already making a mess of things. They also dig into the 2025 Emmy nominations, calling out the most satisfying nods and baffling snubs, with a passionate plea for Harrison Ford to finally take home some gold. Plus, they react to the wild new Dexter reboot and marvel at Jamie Lee Curtis dropping the word "jagoff" repeatedly on The Bear—which, somehow, Nick still hasn't seen. Later, Esmeralda Leon pops in to help Nick rewind to the chaotic, glorious heyday of VH1 reality TV. From The Surreal Life to Mob Wives to the unforgettable Flavor of Love, it's a nostalgic trip through some of the most absurd and addictive shows ever created. Plenty of laughs, solid takes, and maybe a little regret over just how much of that stuff we all actually watched. [Ep 369]

By questioning nostalgia and emphasizing the present, he invites readers to create meaningful experiences today rather than dwell in filtered memories. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://chrisguillebeau.com/glory-days/ Quotes to ponder: "Sometimes we long for a version of the past that didn't actually happen, at least not in the way we remember it." "The best days of your life don't have to be behind you. They can be right now, or just ahead." "Memory is faulty, and nostalgia can be deceptive." Val Kilmer dead at 65 , Tommy Chong (alive at 86) joins us before Hash Bash, Detroit Tigers broadcaster Andy Dirks preps us for Opening Day, Cory Booker's vanity record, Elon Musk leaving Doge, and Blake Lively still can't win. Joe DePugh, the high school pitcher who threw "speedballs" and inspired Bruce Springsteen's ‘Glory Days,' dies at 75. RIP Val Kilmer. Gone too soon at 65.  We remember some of his classic roles in The Doors, Tombstone, Real Genius, Batman, Willow, At First Sight, Top Gun, and MacGruber.  The documentary Val is available on Amazon Prime and well worth your time. Val Kilmer had quite the team photo of woman. Corey Booker's new record is stupid and pointless. Virginia Guiffrey Roberts is down to one day left to live. She was in court 10 days ago for breaching a restraining order. Do most citizens in Canada own a firearm? Drew has a lot of Canadian gun questions. Netflix has a new documentary on the Gilgo Beach killer called "Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer. Some people are saying it focuses too much on the victim's families. The murders might have been solved faster if it wasn't for the ex-Suffolk County DA and the ex-police chief. Are there any non-criminal reasons someone would need a burner phone or military style body armor? Tommy Chong joins us as he prepares to come to town for Astronomicon. Tommy tells us stories of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, his erratic podcasting schedule, surviving the soCal wildfires, the passing of Val Kilmer, Cheech & Chong's Last Movie, the Ann Arbor Hash Bash and more. Detroit Tigers TV color commentator Andy Dirks joins us before the Tigers home opener this Friday. Elon Musk might be stepping down from Doge. Morgan Wallen was very grumpy behind the scenes at Saturday Night Live. He's now capitalizing on the moment by selling merch. Blake Lively seemingly pulled a Justin Baldoni on an earlier film. She also had a PR stunt at her friend's donut shop that hilariously backfired.
