The exciting and unique story of early Dodge City is told daily along Front Street at Boot Hill Museum. The area's rich history dates back to the Native Americans who thrived off the land and the buffalo. The establishment of the Santa Fe Trail brought settlers to the area and introduced the potential of what is known as Dodge City. Law and order was soon recognized, and Dodge City became a civilized frontier town and a center of commerce on the prairie. Wild West Podcast proudly presents the History of Boot Hill Museum. At the end of this episode, we will have Lyne Johnson, Assistant Director of Boot Hill Museum, to talk about the progress the museum has made over the years. In 1878 Dodge City Kansas was a wide-open frontier cow town where shootings, stabbings, and robbery were common. But when popular 34 year-old singer/entertainer Dora Hand was killed in her sleep by James Kenedy- that was one crime too many- and the town was out for blood. Dodge City had more known gunmen and lawmen than any city in the west- and the posse that rode out to get the killer included 4 of the biggest names in the west- Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Bill Tilghman, and Charlie Bassett, There was no way the killer would escape justice- or was there? The story you are about to hear is fictitious, but portions of the story are based on factual accounts. This is the story of a mischief-maker by the name of Luke McGlue. The Luke McGlue character transcends from the perceptiveness of his personality; the way this fictitious character might have perceived Dodge City through the realization of his times. In the mid-1800s, the people of Dodge had a legendary person in which they could blame all sorts of mayhem. His name was Luke McGlue. He was credited with many devious deeds. Many individuals within the community would pull a prank, then pass it off on another individual or on to a fictitious person by the name of Luke McGlue. The story takes place in 1877, a time when Dodge City Kansas was full of pranksters. In the story, Luke visits the Boot Hill resting grounds and meets up with a few unknown characters to administer the Keeley Cure.
The Saloon War written and produced by Mike King and narrated by Brad Smalley is an account of a bloodless conflict that took place between Luke Short and the Dodge City mayor. The "HQ Audio" podcast documents the founding of Dodge City Kansas and the political factors leading up to up to the Saloon War of 1883. The story of Mayor Degers attempt to try and force Luke Short to close the Long Branch Saloon is an accurate account of the corrupt political factors supporting the take over of the whiskey trade in Dodge City. The event is best remembered for the Western gamblers and gunfighters who played roles in the history of the Wild West. Proverbs 6:20 My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching. 21 Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. 22 When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. What's That Around Your Neck? By Robin Aylor Many parents teach their children basic truths through commands and rules. For example, don’t touch the fire on the stove, pick up your toys, share with others, don’t play in the street… or always wear clothes when you go outside… These are commandments and teachings we should take with us into adulthood and never ignore. I actually remember something about those last two… (playing in the street and going outside without clothes on) I think it was the mid to late 70’s in Dodge City Kansas as I watched a streaker on a motorcycle puttering up Boot Hill. If I am not mistaken he was being followed by a Police car with sirens a blaring. Our text says to tie them around your neck. The problem is that many young people think honoring and obeying their parents is like tying a noose around their neck choking the life from them. But the truth is that good parents speak words into our lives that protect us from danger and horrible life altering mistakes... even death. Their commandments are based in love. Good solid teachings are good for life. Our Father in heaven... his word is full of them. Read them, learn them, ponder them… Bind them on your heart and tie them around your neck. They are that important! Let them guide you as you walk throughout your day in work ethic and relationships and with your spouse and family… Keep them with you even when your day is done and when you awake again they will again bid you good morning.
