Looking for more DTP Content? Check us out: www.thereadinesslab.com/dtp-links On this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, I sit down with Andrew Donawa, Emergency Management Coordinator for the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, to talk about what it really takes to bridge the gap between law enforcement and emergency management. Andrew brings a rare perspective—combining the mindset of a responder with the strategy of an emergency manager—and he's helping shape how Pasco County handles everything from hurricane response and flood recovery to incident management and public safety coordination. We dig into lessons from Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, where Pasco County faced record flooding and major operational strain, and how his team worked hand-in-hand with fire, EMS, and outside IMT resources to stabilize the county. Andrew shares how he's earned trust across a culture that doesn't always mesh easily with emergency management, walking us through the balance of humility, persistence, and leadership required to build credibility inside a sheriff's office. We talk about how faith and service guide his leadership, how to drive policy changes that actually stick—like improved responder safety standards and water-rescue PPE—and what it means to lead with integrity when everything is on the line. This episode is packed with real-world takeaways on incident command, resource management, and interagency collaboration, and it's a must-listen for anyone working in public safety, emergency management, or crisis leadership. From Oklahoma tornado deployments to Pasco County's hurricane operations, Andrew shows what it looks like when emergency management becomes mission-ready, proactive, and trusted by the people it supports. This week I am going to stick with some local Sevier County issues, but those issues have a national implication. The free speech that is being silenced is being conducted by none other than the state representative for Tennessee House District 12, Fred Atchley. Additionally, it would seem that the County Sheriff has decided not to follow his oath. Guess what though - they both belong to the same group of people, yep the Good Old Boy network that have controlled Sevier County for nearly 50 years now. ===== MDJ Script/ Top Stories for October 17th Publish Date:  October 17th    Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Friday, October 17th and Happy Birthday to Alan Jackson I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Cobb County Sheriff's Office welcomes newest GED graduates ACT scores increase in Cobb, dip in Marietta KSU student arrested after protesting Charlie Kirk memorial Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on grass fed beef All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: Ingles Markets 10 STORY 1: Cobb County Sheriff's Office welcomes newest GED graduates The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office hosted its third GED graduation of the year on Oct. 8, right inside the Adult Detention Center. Seven detainees walked away with diplomas in hand—proof that change is possible, even behind bars. Since the program launched in March 2024, over 30 detainees have earned their GEDs. The ceremony was heartfelt, with speeches from Chief Deputy Rhonda Anderson, Col. Michael Williams, and Dr. Kim Kranzlin of Cobb Adult Education. The program isn’t easy—four subjects, a minimum score of 145, and 40+ hours of study. But for these seven, it’s a step toward something better. STORY 2: ACT scores increase in Cobb, dip in Marietta  ACT scores are in, and Cobb County is celebrating its highest average in four years, while Marietta High saw a slight dip. Cobb’s average jumped to 23.7 (up 0.9 points), while Marietta landed at 22.2 (down 0.5). Both still outpaced state (21.4) and national (19.4) averages. Wheeler High led Cobb with a stellar 28.5 average, even climbing 2.5 points from last year. Meanwhile, Marietta students continued to outperform state and national peers in every subject, despite the slight drop. “Success takes time,” said Marietta Superintendent Grant Rivera. “Hard work and curiosity drive our students forward.” Georgia students, for the ninth year, beat the national average. STORY 3: KSU student arrested after protesting Charlie Kirk memorial  A protest at Kennesaw State University’s memorial for conservative activist Charlie Kirk ended in chaos Tuesday night, with one student, Luca Compiani, 18, arrested on charges of battery and obstruction. According to police, Compiani “intentionally” bumped into KSU Police Capt. Timothy Murphy in a “provoking manner” and fled when confronted. Protesters, however, claim the situation was escalated unnecessarily, calling the arrest “a gross abuse of authority.” The memorial, hosted by Young Americans for Liberty, drew both supporters and protesters. Some shouted chants, others threw ketchup at a flag. Despite the tension, organizers said the event achieved its goal: promoting free speech—even amid dissent. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: Ingles Markets 10 STORY 4: 1,100+ voters cast ballots on Day 1 of early voting  Nearly 1,200 Cobb County voters turned out Monday for the first day of early voting, with Marietta leading the charge. Of the 1,193 ballots cast, 481 came from the Cobb Elections Main Office, while Mableton saw 221 voters at the South Cobb Community Center. Michael D’Itri, acting director of Cobb Elections, said turnout usually starts strong, dips mid-period, then surges in the final days. For Marietta voter Chris Danos, 28, the mayoral race is top of mind. “We need better transportation options,” he said. Meanwhile, Dan and Vicki Rupnow, who moved from Atlanta, love Marietta’s walkability and lighter traffic. “It’s perfect for us,” they said. Sheriffs in other counties are drawing scrutiny for their spending and other practices, but Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger appeared live on WHAV to demonstrate how Essex County shines. This week, the legislature withheld $162 million request from county sheriffs following complaints in Norfolk, Hampden and Suffolk counties. Coppinger, who stopped by WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program last Friday, discussed instead how his office prepares inmates for re-entry and helps correctional staff stay on top of mental health. Among the job training and re-entry programs the Sheriff's Department runs is the farm at the Pre-Release and Re-Entry Center in Lawrence.“We average about 3,600 pounds of produce. This is our time of year. That's one of the things we do. We teach the inmates also vocational skills. The farm is incredible. We hire an actual farmer to come in and teach the inmates, but the inmates do all the cleaning of the fields in the spring. They plant them. They take care of them all summer. Then they harvest them and we take the harvest. We take some of it to feed our inmates in all our facilities. We also donate a lot of it to charities and non-profits,” Coppinger explained. The department also has a partnership with Northern Essex Community College which runs classes for inmates.“Our philosophy is, while they are in there, no pun intended, we have a captive audience. Let's do what we can and we partner with President (Lane A.) Glenn and the staff at Northern Essex to come in and teach the inmates, whether it is high school equivalency or maybe a college level course. It's amazing when you see the inmates transition to a learning environment,” Coppinger said. Finally, the sheriff talked about an initiative to help relieve his staff's stress level—a comfort dog.“His name is Pasky. Pasky was named after Officer Anthony Pasquarello, who was one of our correctional officers and it's a sad story. But, at the age of 37, he passed away during the peak of Covid. He was a great officer. He just caught COVID, got a bad case of it and we lost him and it was troubling. So, in his memory in cooperation with his family we got our first comfort dog and we named it Pasky in honor of Officer Pasquarello. It just kind of keeps his memory alive with our officers. He's there for the staff,” Coppinger said. The former chief of the Lynn Police Department with 40 years in law enforcement, Coppinger was first elected Essex County Sheriff in 2016 for a six-year term. He is currently serving his second term.Support the show

Are Orange County Sheriffs the best in Florida? Explore everything you wanted to know about policing in the Sunshine State!Meet Ross, a passionate professor of criminal justice at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Not only is he dedicated to educating the future leaders of law enforcement, but he also serves as the dean of the College of Innovation and Education, encompassing disciplines like Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, and Police Administration. Ross's journey into the world of law enforcement began unexpectedly, sparked by a simple yet transformative suggestion from a friend who was a deputy sheriff in Orange County."You have to experience it for yourself," she urged, and thus began Ross's adventure. He joined her on a ride-along, filled with excitement and a hint of trepidation. As the patrol car cruised through the vibrant neighborhoods of Orange County, Ross felt a rush of adrenaline each time they responded to a call. He became hooked on the thrill of policing, leading him to undertake an auxiliary deputy training course. However, the dynamics of the precinct—filled with camaraderie, challenges, and community service—only fueled his desire to dive deeper into the badge-wearing world.Initially feeling unfulfilled in his full-time role, Ross made a pivotal decision to join the Orange County Sheriff's Office as a regular deputy. His journey transformed him from a patrolman into a road policing officer, and eventually, a detective on a specialized stolen vehicle squad. Each day brought a new set of challenges and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the community. While balancing work with his academic aspirations, Ross pursued a doctorate, demonstrating an unyielding commitment to both education and public service. Once he completed this significant milestone, he recognized that a better work-life balance awaited him as a reservist. When Ross first donned the uniform of the Orange County Sheriff, he was met with the vastness of his jurisdiction—900 square miles filled with urban settings, suburban neighborhoods, and sprawling natural landscapes. This expansive area is patrolled by over 1,600 law enforcement officers, not counting those from individual cities and federal agencies. Ross recalls the sense of responsibility that enveloped him as he realized the sheer scale of policing in Florida. He vividly remembers one late night when he attended a call that involved a large community gathering. The energy was palpable, and he felt honored to be part of a team ensuring the safety of so many. The complexities of policing in Florida often weigh heavily on the shoulders of officers, especially reservists like Ross, who can perform any role that regular officers tackle, provided they possess the appropriate training. Yet, he acknowledges that the commitment to specialist units can be rigorous and demanding. "If you serve as a reservist for 20 years, you can choose your role," Ross explains, emphasizing the dedication and perseverance required in law enforcement.Training also plays a crucial role in police work, particularly when it comes to firearms. Ross remarks on the stark contrast between the exposure to firearms in Florida compared to the UK, where he often shares his experiences with students. He recalls the tragic shooting at the Pulse Nightclub on June 12, 2016, where 49 lives were lost, and 53 were injured. It was a stark reminder of the dangers officers face daily. Reserve officers were on the scene, and the gravity of that night shaped their resolve to protect and serve the community.Beyond the routine patrols and high-stakes situations, Ross highlights the unique opportunities that reservists have to earn while engaging in community events, such as providing support at Disney World. Today we sit down with former Arapahoe Deputy Sheriff and current Douglas County Sheriff in Colorado, and we discuss the epidemic of school shootings in America. We also want to stress the growing need for our schools to have resource officers in schools to protect what matters most to us….the children. James was on campus, as the SRO, at the Arapahoe High School on December 13th, 2013, when a disturbed teenager entered the school armed with a shotgun and Molotov cocktails and had a mission to murder the debate coach. 12:30 p.m.: The teen suspect enters Arapahoe High School with a shotgun, a machete, and three Molotov cocktails. On his arm, he has written the Latin phrase "Alea iacta est" ("The die has been cast"), along with numbers corresponding to the library and nearby classrooms. Around 12:33 p.m.: After the suspect fires one round down a hallway, he shoots 17-year-old student Claire Davis in the head as she sits at a table near the library with a friend. She is not his intended target. He then entered the library and threw the incendiary devices starting a fire. 12:34 p.m.: Officer James Englert and a security guard confronted the suspect, who then takes his own life with a gunshot to the head. December 21, 2013: Eight days after the shooting, Claire Davis dies from her injuries. Shortly after Claire's family asked James if he would be a pall bearer at her funeral, which he accepted. A year after the shooting, an outdoor space calledClarity Commons is dedicated to Claire Davis's memory at the school.  James is an instructor and Vice President forNASRO (National Association for School Resource Officers). From a meeting with the sheriff in 2021 to launching a fully operational unit just three years later, their journey has been one of vision, dedication, and collaboration. The team carefully selected the right people and the right airframe for their mission, drawing valuable insight from neighboring aviation units, the Airborne Public Safety Association, and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office in Florida. The result: 22 rescues in their very first year of operation.Representing the unit are its three full-time members—Sergeant Jesse Decanay, Pilot Joe Brown, and TFO/Mechanic Patrick Becker. Together, we discuss the challenges of building a law enforcement aviation program from the ground up, choosing the right airframe and personnel, and establishing a strong safety culture from day one.Thank you to all our followers and our sponsors. EPHRAIM DEBISA IS BACK BEHIND BARS...FOR NOW The man who has become the face of the garbage criminal justice reform bill passed by Democrats is back behind bars after showing up on University of Northern Colorado residential apartments waving a gun. Ephraim Ebisa has been arrested numerous times for violent crimes but he keeps getting let out because he's been found incompetent to stand trial. This is a Colorado created problem, as Robert Dear, the man who murdered several people and wounded more in an attack on a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood over a DECADE ago, is STILL in prison awaiting trial on federal charges. So how long with Debisa be behind bars this time? Surely he didn't just get mentally well since his last arrest. Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams, who sounded the alarm about this guy, joins me at 12:30 to discuss it.
