First Responders, and Public Servants, share their most extraordinary experiences from their careers. Preserving their personal legacies for friends and family and sharing their stories for anyone who might be curious or interested in a career in public s
The Choir Practice Podcast provides a captivating and immersive look into the world of law enforcement officers. As a long-time resident of Tucson, I was particularly interested in gaining insight into the experiences of these public servants who protect and serve our communities. I stumbled upon this podcast thanks to a recommendation from a family member of the host, and I am extremely grateful for that.
One of the best aspects of The Choir Practice Podcast is the outstanding interviewer who hosts it. Their ability to engage with their guests and ask thought-provoking questions truly sets this podcast apart. The host creates a candid and relaxed environment for law enforcement officers to share their experiences, allowing listeners to get an authentic glimpse into their lives. It's refreshing to hear these men and women humanized, as they often put their lives on the line for us.
The podcast is still new, but within just two weeks, I was hooked. If you enjoy shows like Cops, Live PD, or Live FD, you will undoubtedly love Choir Practice. The episodes are well-structured and provide a front-row seat to the world of law enforcement. Each interview delves deep into various aspects of an officer's experiences, shedding light on the challenges they face and the impact they have on their communities.
While it's hard to find any significant drawbacks to this podcast, one potential downside could be the limited number of episodes available at this time. However, considering how captivating each episode is, it only leaves me eagerly anticipating future installments. It would be wonderful if there were more frequent releases or even bonus content to satisfy my craving for more stories from law enforcement officers.
In conclusion, The Choir Practice Podcast is an exceptional show that deserves recognition for its ability to provide raw insight into the lives of law enforcement officers. With an outstanding host who skillfully conducts interviews with these brave individuals, listeners are afforded a unique opportunity to understand and appreciate their work better. Whether you have an interest in anything related to law enforcement or simply want a riveting podcast, make sure to give The Choir Practice Podcast a listen – you won't regret it.

Send us a textWhen Robbie graced us last time we made it through his 21 year career as a Deputy Sheriff. After retirement, he finished law school and began his second career as a prosecutor in Maricopa County.Serial burglary rings, serial bank robbers, a disgraced police officer turned bank robber...you gotta hear the tales! Send us a textIt was so good to catch up with Tyke. We chatted for about three hours before we started recording. Our friendship goes back to 1996 or 1997! We carpooled to the jail together. His career in public service began with the USMC, deploying to Iraq in the first Desert Storm. Once back in the states, and leaving the Corp, he had to find employment and saw an ad for the Arizona Department of Corrections. The drive to Florence, AZ, and lackluster pay, motivated him to move into County Corrections, just like me. He eventually promoted to Deputy Sheriff and spent a good amount of time working in Traffic as a Motor Officer and also as a Collision investigator.Check him out, give him a warm welcome and let's get this episode rockin' Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textLike so many of my guests, Roger has lived many lives in one lifetime! And the positions he's held, the opportunities to serve, are very honorable. He began public service by joining the Army. He left the Army and was hired by the Chief of Goshen Police Department. After about 5 years, he headed West for better weather and to be closer to family. Hired by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, he began his career on the Navajo Reservation in a town called Kayenta.Undercover/Narcotics in Pinetop, AZ, a promotion to Sergeant. Then a move to Pinal County where he was promoted Lieutenant. At the 21 year mark, he was approached to run for Sheriff. He won two elections, professionalizing the agency and making big strides to improve the department before being asked by AZ Governor Janet Napolitano to become the Director of AZ DPS.Tune in, check it out. I'm honored to have Roger as the newest member of The Squad... Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textLou has been mentioned by Kurt Dabb a few times. Nothing brings you closer to peace than being choked out by your Brazilian Jui Jitsu brothers and sisters! He's a Navy Veteran who came to know many of the first responder community through BJJ. He felt a tugging on his heart to take it a step further and start to work on hearts and minds and well as the physical fitness aspect. This led him to create a group where vets and first responders could decompress, share the tough parts of their jobs amongst friends and mix in a little Faith to help strengthen the members as well.On this journey, I've discussed many resources and paths to thrive beyond our experiences, not just survive. It's one of the greatest honors of producing this show and speaking with so many wonderful folks...Give Lou the warmest welcome!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textAs promised, in consecutive weeks, good ol Dave Thomas is back and we chat about his stint in Homicide, Arson, Internal Affairs, and finally the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Trafficking Interdiction Squad (MANTIS). Dave's a very artistic dude, we discussed his fiction book "The Gordian Knot" published in 2009. Now, he has a Non Fiction book coming out this summer, "Requiem for Justice," where he writes about some of the cases that impacted him from his career. It is absolutely my honor to be trusted with the legacies of the brave men and women who have agreed to be on the show...I'm grateful and humbled. Please tune in, give Dave a warm welcome and enjoy the rest of his career. Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textDave kindly reminded me he was not the same Dave Thomas of Wendy's Hamburger Fame. We met at the Pima County Sheriff's reunion and I convinced him to be on the show. After high school he attended the University of Arizona where he attempted to study "Women and keg beer." This was a short-lived endeavor, so in order to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War...he joined the Air Force. He was a Russian Linguist and spent his time in the Air Force intercepting messages and listening in for any possible intel to pass along.Four years later, older and wiser, he returned home and began searching for work while going back to school. Pima County placed an ad in the paper, he applied and the rest, as they say, is history! I had a great time learning about and getting to know Dave, I'm excited to introduce him to you as the newest member of The Squad!!!He will be a two-part series, so please remember to come back next week as well! Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textIt was my pleasure to host Robbie, get to know him better and I was amazed at how many of the historic events around Tucson he had been a part of. I'd be lying if I denied that the little whisper in the back of my head didn't save me on a number of occasions. Robbie describes the same phenomenon and absolutely attributes this :Guardian Angel" to his faith. We only made it through his police career int his episode, but I must say I'm intrigued to hear about his years as a prosecutor in the Phoenix Valley, keep your eyes peeled for future episodes. So, with all due respect, please give a warm welcome to the newest member of The Squad and let's get this show started!!!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textKurt is back! The last time he was on the show was 2022! He said he wanted to come back and share with The Squad the different types of therapies he has used over the years to help him deal with the calls and situations he was dispatched to. I'm grateful for his honesty, vulnerability and authenticity! My hope is that there are a few nuggets in here that you might find helpful. Thank you again Kurt, I appreciate that you suffered through some anxiety to share your message!!! I hope it makes all the difference for you and for someone else out there...Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textMy good buddy, and multiple time guest, Bill Hanson arranged the meeting between Randy and I!We met, I gave him a hard time about being a second responder, but he was such the gracious guest. He chose the fire service after he had an interaction with Firefighter/ paramedics early in his life which sealed his destiny! Many years later, he rose to the ranks of The Chief and he continues to serve in retirement. On a serious note, I appreciate his authenticity and willingness to share the story of his son Aaron. Aaron was an EMT in the Phoenix Valley early in his adult life. He saw some things that made a deep impression on him, some that he could not shake. He went on to become a firefighter for Golder Ranch, but not without some demons which ultimately caught up to him.Randy, thanks again for sharing your story, creating this legacy, and continuing to serve. Squad, you know what to do...lift him up, enjoy the episode and thanks for tuning in. Send us a textRick and I worked together while in the Office of Internal Affairs. He was our Captain, and the Chief's Executive Officer. Later, we met back up at the academy. I had escaped from IA and he was given the plush assignment right before he retired as a reward for a job well done under more stressful assignments.I enjoy his company, so much so, that we had to meet on two separate occasions just to get this episode in the books! Rick, thank you for being willing to put yourself out there and hang out for a few hours. Your feedback of the show mean a lot to me, my only hope is that the service I provided to you in recording this permanent legacy was just as invaluable.Folks, give him a a Choir Practice welcome and enjoy the show!!! Send us a textWell, the last time Ron popped in we only made it through his career with the Pima County Sheriff's department. He's back, we clear up a few more notable PCSO moments and dive full into his career as a Spook. All kidding aside, he worked for another 16-17 years as an FBI Analyst. I'm honored host him and I'm so glad to present him to you, the coolest folks on the planet.Turn it up, send me a note about this episode! I appreciate you all...Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textTo say I enjoyed meeting up with Raul again would be an understatement. He was episode 28 three years ago. I didn't think he could top the story of his partner slapping someone across the face with a rattle snake, but here we are. He makes the podcast t-shirts (a gift for every guest, super exclusive gifts!) so I cornered him and forced him back on the show for another episode. We had a great time, I enjoy his company and I hope you enjoy this round of tales from his days working the US/ Mexico border in California and Arizona.Turn it up and enjoy!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textJenn and I crossed paths over the years. We were new Sergeants on the Eastside and went on to join each other on a study group to promote to Lieutenant. She's newly retired after just over 24 years and I'm proud to know her. Really looking forward to what she does next, and I'm happy to share her career with you all.Give her the warmest welcome and enjoy!!!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textOccasionally, I like to take a look back at where we've been so we can fully appreciate where the show is today. I do this by sharing some of the most popular episodes over the years. Based on the numbers...Nancy is right up there with Ed Boyen, Jen Brotherton, and Mike Thrall! For all you new listeners, take a look at their interviews as well and you'll see why I love what I do! The stories, the authentic guests...it is an honor and privilege to sit wit these folks...Sit back, enjoy the ride and thanks for being a part of The Squad!!!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textThat's right, you've seen his name before...As a cop/ first responder, If you listen to the show, you can't help but recall memories as you listen to your buddies tell their stories. That's exactly what happened! After Steve Gardner and Dr. Carmona were on the show, Bobby said he needed to come back.He said he'd come tell more stories if I served up more bourbon! I couldn't let him down...Tune in, turn it up and enjoy the ride. Bobby's great, I'm glad to know him and even more glad I get to share him with you all!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textMike's story is similar to mine. Palo Verde HS grads (barely), then Pima County Deputy and finally City of Tucson Police Officers. The profession is a good for people who found themselves being the protector of their friends, kept themselves out of trouble and want to spend their time, energy and efforts helping.Mike continues to help, creating his non-profit "No Belt Required" that provides Jui Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, and Muy Thai training for public servants. He and I agree that confidence and competence in ones abilities is a prescription for a better physical and mental outcome during critical incidents. Who wouldn't want that for their public servants?Turn it up, give a warm welcome to the newest member of The Squad and shoot me a note to tell me what you thought of the episode!!!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textTerry has been on the show before, but I asked him to come back and speak about the fallen officers 501C3 he created, while sharing the stories of some of our fallen heroes. The Arizona Fallen Heroes Memorial Riders raise money to help first responders seriously injured in the line of duty, or to provide financial assistance to the families of fallen officers. Terry brought over two pages of notes, all cases involving "In the line of duty" deaths he investigated while on the highway patrol...This podcast show, a true legacy project, is more than honored to carry on the names of our fallen brothers and sisters. Their memories live on as long as we continue to speak their names. Send us a textLike many of my guests, Andy is one of those guys where my urgency to get him on the show is heightened because, as you will hear, he developed Parkinson's late into his career and it ultimately forced him to quit before he was ready...even though he spent 30 years serving the City of Tucson. He worked his way into many of the "Desired" assignments through out his career, becoming a Senior SWAT Operator, K9 trainer and firearms instructor at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center (SALETC).I enjoyed our chat, but as per usual, he'll need to come back because he didn't really get into stories with his last two dogs! Give him a warm welcome to The Squad... Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textOver my career, US Marines have been some of the best folks I've ever worked with. The sense of duty, the "Can do" attitude and the refusal to quit when times get hard are all qualities that make them some of the best partners on the force. With that being said, Mike exemplified all these qualities throughout his career! Even though he can't drive, haha, the rest of what he brought to the table are exactly the qualities that have allowed him to live such a wonderful life in service of others.Buckle in, give him a warm welcome, and show him why we are the coolest Squad on the planet! Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textI enjoyed chatting with Ron, the last time I'd seen him was when he taught Constitutional Law to my academy class in 1998!His arrival to AZ, the jobs he held prior to entering la enforcement and a storied career...I think you're going to enjoy this one. You can see in the title of this episode he also worked at the FBI, but we didn't make it that far, so he plans to return and talk about those experiences, but for now, sit back and enjoy this one...Leave me a message or come visit me on social media, let me know what you thought of this episode!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textHave I ever told you how awesome you are? It's "Carmona Part two"-eve and the show currently sits at 60,343 downloads!!!! The number seems unreal, but it makes sense when you consider the line up of phenomenal guests...Speaking of phenomenal guests... Richard Carmona is back!If you tuned in last week, we barely scratched the surface of a truly extraordinary career! I was honestly surprised that the run time is barely over two hours because the total time of our visit was about 5 hours!!!! Probably could've kept going too! Such a great, authentic person.I'm honored, humbled and so glad he wanted to come back so quickly to meet up and get the rest of this recorded. We could probably fill 10 or more episodes to be honest!Buckle up, enjoy the ride and please leave me a response either on Buzzsprout, Spotify or the social media links below. Send us a textThe title for this episode could go on forever! Dr. Richard Camona was certainly a jack of all trades, but at the highest levels. It was my honor to be able to sit down with him and not only chat about his career but how ours intersected in a very small way. I am in awe of his path to special forces, medicine and law enforcement. his life definitely needs to be preserved for generations. Please give him a warm welcome and be sure to come back because he had to come back for another episode to cover the extraordinary career and life he had...Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/

Send us a textJust shy of 21 years of honorable service to the "Old Pueblo."A University of Arizona grad and O/Malley's bartender- turned police officer apparently isn't as random as I suspected. Jon rattled off about 6 names of other folks who took a similar path! His degree in chemistry, and TA'ing at the university threw me for a loop, but that's how these interviews consistently surprise me when discovering people's path to public service!!!!He said something I might have to put on a t-shirt: "It was their worst day, but for you it was Thursday." Yeah...we like to wax poetic here on the show sometimes!!!In typical fashion, we made it through his patrol years (a little over 9 years) and he is coming back next week to tell us about his 9+ years as a night detective.Tune in, tell your friends, and show him some love... Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textJoe reached out through LinkedIn, we met at the door when he arrived, and then proceeded to put down 3 hours of war stories!!! Send us a textDarren is another guest recommended to me by Bill Hanson, thanks Bill! Almost 30 years with Phoenix PD, 4 years in the United States Army prior to that! A life of service, a unique story on how he realized he wanted to spend his life helping people, and a smattering of police shootings to boot! You won't regret tuning in, you'll be sorry if you sleep on this one! We had a great time and I can't wait to have him back! Send us a textMy guest this week was introduced to me by Bill Hanson! Mike and I texted a few times and made plans for him to join The Squad! He spent 32 years with San Bernardino County, rising through the ranks, and had plenty of super cool experiences along the way. Considering his interest during college was biology, he got an up close look at humanity and the shenanigans that ensue from the craziest of biology's animals!!!! HAHAHAHHA I appreciated his time, loved hearing his stories, and he will be another member of the squad who needs to return because he has so many more experiences to share...Give Mike a warm welcome and please, enjoy the episode...Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textAs promised, Terry is back! There's just no way to get all the stories from a 35 year career captured in just one episode!!! He returned will all new stories I can't wait for you all to hear.We also chatted more about the Arizona Fallen Hero Memorial Riders and how they raise funds to help the families of first responders when an officer is injured or killed in the line of duty. Terry had just gotten back from riding in Northern AZ, raising funds which they provided to the 100 club of AZ, who has similar mission. We had a good time, I'm glad to know him, and even more glad you all get to know him too! Turn it up and enjoy!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textI'm so glad I was able to have Sean on the show. His upbringing and pathway to this branch of Law Enforcement has to be one of the most unique yet! He served several years in the Navy before being hired and working for the AZ Dept. of Corrections in Safford and Douglas, AZ. Ultimately he was hired by Pima County where his career took off. He helped create Security Services which tracked gangs and gang activity within the jail. This was such a goldmine of information, not only did he become a subject matter expert for prosecutors, he became a tremendous resource to investigators on the streets as well. Now, he travels across the US, teaching jailers and helping agencies write policy to prevent lawsuits. Give him a warm, Choir Practice, welcome and enjoy the show! Send us a textI enjoyed getting to know Terry. He spent more than 30 years with AZ DPS. When he retired, he had been an investigator for over 20 of those 30+ years. His encyclopedic knowledge of historical events in AZ over the years was both impressive and interesting. He was the king of quips! A couple times he made comments that would be well suited as a t-shirt quote! He continues to serve, and give back to families of first responders, by founding the Arizona Fallen Hero Memorial Riders club. They're a 501c3 who raise funds to help families of the fallen or for families whose first responder suffered significant injuries on the job. You can find them at azfhmr.org to donate or find their charity events.Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/

Send us a textBill Hanson has always been so generous with his time and his stories. The guy experienced more than many of us, spending a bulk of his career in the Homicide Unit, being featured on First 48, and now teaching future investigators to be their best and put bad guys behind bars for a long time.We had a cigar, some bourbon and a great conversation... so please give him a warm welcome and enjoy the show...Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textDan's father was a Phoenix Police Officer back in the 80's which was Dan's introduction to that life. As a young man, he had the same start in law enforcement that many of us have, Corrections. He kept applying and was picked up by Mohave County on the AZ/CA border! A couple moves later he settled at AZ Liquor Control. As a member of this agency, he learned of Liquor Agent Alfred Moore who had been killed in the line of duty back in the 60's but was never "Nationally Recognized" as having been killed in the line of duty. I found Dan's recounting of his efforts to get the error corrected to be very honorable.Turn it up, tell a friend, and enjoy this week's episode of Choir Practice!Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
Send us a textWhen Jessica came over for her first interview we just knew she had to come back, we had more to talk about!I'm so glad she made it. He decided to enlist in the full-time Navy and, after his "sentence" as he mistakenly said, he decided to join the Pima County Sheriff's Department after a ride along experience convinced him this was the profession for him...He spent years on the Search and Rescue Unit, Mental Health Support Unit and ultimately became a Detective where he worked hand in hand with a future Choir Practice guest, Corrections Lt. Sean Stewart.I had a great time listening to his stories and getting to know Shawn, I can't wait for The Squad to get to know him as well!!! Send us a textSteve grew up as a Military Brat, but settled one the Aurora/ Denver area of Colorado as a young man. Send us a textWhen Dan cam over in May, we knew he'd need to come back to wrap up his career. We also took a deep dive into EMDR therapy, which Dan said literally saved his life. I feel I enjoyed this episode more than his first and the message within the message is definitely one that every first responder needs to hear. There is help out there, you aren't alone, asking for help is courageous and not a sign of weakness. Please tune in, share with your friends who are first responders/ public servants and your family members. I think you'll be just as touched as I was by this week's episode!!!As always, if a friend crosses your mind there's a reason, you need to call/text them! It might make all the difference...Come see me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/choir.practice.94 or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cp_sfaf/
