In Robert Greene's latest searingly honest documentary, PROCESSION, six midwestern men all survivors of childhood sexual assault at the hands of Catholic priests and clergy come together to direct a drama therapy-inspired experiment designed to collectively work through their trauma. As part of a radically collaborative filmmaking process, they create fictional scenes based on memories, dreams and experiences, meant to explore the church rituals, culture and hierarchies that enabled silence around their abuse. In the face of a failed legal system, we watch these men reclaim the spaces that allowed their assault, revealing the possibility for catharsis and redemption through a new-found fraternity. As one of the men says, “SPOTLIGHT was about trying to get in from the outside. In our film, we're trying to get out.” Director Robert Greene (Kate Plays Christine, Bisbee '17) joins us to talk about his collaboration with an extraordinary group of men, Joe Eldred, Mike Foreman, Ed Gavagan, Dan Laurine, Michael Sandridge and Tom Viviano as they begin the process of taking control of a narrative that has brought them immeasurable pain and rage, by telling their story of abuse on their own terms. Beginning on November 19: netflix.com/Procession Opens in NY on November 12th and in LA and SF on November 19th
In Morocco, Ed Gavagan finds the hidden flaw in the Golden Rule.
It's not too blunt to say that Ed Gavagan is a big reason why I'm fascinated with personal storytelling as a craft. I first heard him telling stories on The Moth years ago and, when he and I were introduced and he indicated that he'd be willing to do a story for the show, I literally bounced up the stairs of my house yelling to my wife "I'm going to do a show with the guy who told Drowning on Sullivan Street." When your story is as big and life-changing as Ed's is, you can tell it in many different ways. I think the version he told The Moth is a love letter of sorts to New York. I'm very proud that the version of the story he told here on TVK was a reflection on good fortune and privilege, and on forgiveness. I really can't thank him enough for sharing it with me, and with you.If you haven't had enough of Ed's fantastic pacing and compelling voice you can check out his Ted Talk and the version of his story he told The New Yorker for its We Are Witnesses portrait of crime and punishment in America. As for the music, this week's playlist is called Fairytale of New York and it features not only Elton John (our first ever "two-time-story-inspiring" artist here on the show) but also Tom Waits, LCD Soundsystem, The xx and Johnny Cash. Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.

Ed Gavigan was walking home one night from the bar where he worked in Manhattan when he was jumped by three kids and stabbed six times in the back, side and neck. Doctors gave him a 2% chance to live. In the hospital he learned that the three kids were gang members looking for someone to kill as part of an initiation for moving up in the gang, and Ed was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But what’s even more remarkable than Ed surviving such a brutal attack is that he forgave his attackers and discovered - against a backdrop of debilitating depression and PTSD - a capacity for empathy he had never known.Episode benefits Legacy of War https://www.legacyofwarfoundation.com/Are you following us yet on social?
