Rev. Trudy and Rev. Hannah wrap up the conversation series – “The Christ-Like Journey” – in this episode of First United Methodist Church of San Diego’s Perspectives Pastors Podcast. It’s a multi-episode series where the female pastors and the audience have learned from the most difficult things Jesus had to do during his time on Earth. And in this episode, it’s perhaps the hardest thing of all: Jesus Forgave. It's a digital Bible study that’s by Luke 23:33-43, the crucifixion portion of The Passion story. Through the conversation, the women explain how forgiveness is central to Christianity, especially as portrayed through the Gospel of Luke. But they also note that there are some nuances that they feel people often misinterpret: The use of atonement theology – focusing on individual forgiveness instead of communal forgiveness Not including all of Jesus’ life in his act of salvation The difference between “Jesus died for our sins” and “Jesus died because of or sins” Connection between Jewish tradition of Jubilee and Jesus’ model of forgiveness The societal impact of what forgiveness may offer – for ourselves, others, and systems The scripture and topic have so many themes to explore. You can keep the conversation going by joining our weekly in-person Convergence discussion group or heading over to our Patreon channel to discuss the following questions with others: What’s been your experience or forgiveness? Either your need or your offering it? How do you explain the difference between the two criminal’s responses? What does forgiveness look like in the public sphere? Our Patreon community is open to all – no matter where you align in your spiritual beliefs. It’s free to join and connect over the weekly episode questions. There is also an optional paid membership that unlocks additional content. Check it out at https://www.patreon.com/fumcsd!

On November 1, 2007, a man named Rudy Guede broke into a random home in Perugia, Italy, then raped and killed Meredith Kercher—a 21-year-old exchange student from the University of Leeds. You might not even remember the names Rudy Guede and Meredith Kercher. But one name you will remember is Meredith's roommate, Amanda Knox, a 20-year-old exchange student from Seattle. In the weeks and years after Kercher's murder, the media and the prosecution concocted a narrative that Amanda, her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, and Guede had played a violent sex game leading to Kercher's murder. Amanda was portrayed as a deviant sex fiend, a slut, a killer, and a psychopath. The problem is that none of it was true. Amanda had only been dating Sollecito a week. She had never met Guede. And most importantly, she was not playing a sex game that led to Kercher's death. Amanda would end up spending a total of eight years on trial and four years in prison for a murder she did not commit. And Kercher's real murderer—Guede—would never be charged with killing Kercher alone. He'd spend only 13 years behind bars for this crime. And after his release in 2021, he would be accused of committing a similar crime again. Here's the part of the story most people don't know: On the morning of November 5, 2007, Amanda Knox was taken into custody in Italy. She wasn't given a lawyer or a translator. She wasn't told that she was a suspect. She was questioned for 53 hours. She was struck by a police officer, gaslit, and pressured into signing a confession. Now, 18 years since she was taken into custody, she has released a memoir called Free: My Search for Meaning to tell the full story of what happened in Perugia, how she fought for vindication, how the tabloids and credible news organizations villainized her, and what her life has been like since she was exonerated in 2015. Today on Honestly, Bari asks Amanda Knox how she survived in prison, how she reintegrated into society, why she returned to Italy to confront the judge who put her behind bars, why she chooses forgiveness, and what it means to be truly free. In today's episode, we examine the bizarre story of the Snowden family murders, which took place over a few decades in a small community in the state of Arkansas. In 1996, a double homicide occurred inside of a historic property in the small town, which rocked the community. However, the story didn't end there, and this violence reared its ugly head once again decades later when in 2020, news broke of an unthinkable event occurring, that would send shockwaves throughout the town. - Listen to our new show, "THE CONSPIRACY FILES"!: -Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5IY9nWD2MYDzlSYP48nRPl -Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-conspiracy-files/id1752719844 -Amazon/Audible - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ab1ade99-740c-46ae-8028-b2cf41eabf58/the-conspiracy-files -Pandora - https://www.pandora.com/podcast/the-conspiracy-files/PC:1001089101 -iHeart - https://iheart.com/podcast/186907423/ -PocketCast - https://pca.st/dpdyrcca -CastBox - https://castbox.fm/channel/id6193084?country=us - Stay Connected: Join the Murder in America fam in our free Facebook Community for a behind-the-scenes look, more insights and current events in the true crime world: https://www.facebook.com/groups/4365229996855701 If you want even more Murder in America bonus content, including ad-free episodes, come join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/murderinamerica Instagram: http://instagram.com/murderinamerica/ Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/people/Murder-in-America-Podcast/100086268848682/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MurderInAmerica TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theparanormalfiles and https://www.tiktok.com/@courtneybrowen Feeling spooky? This session will emphasize that Joseph, a man who had a lot of power, chose to show love and care for his brothers and forgive them. Family members should be ready to ask for or give forgiveness when wrongs happen. Forgiving family members is a reflection of the forgiveness God gives. Help kids think about situations that may lead to asking for forgiveness within families.
Rose Larson has been through things none of us want to go through: betrayal, divorce, a son's suicide, and another son's addiction and incarceration. She describes what she encountered and how God enabled her to rise above the pain and forgive the unforgivable. Forgiveness, especially for the big life-changing things, isn't easy to do, and yet, it is possible. Hearing others' stories gives us a new perspective of our own. We learn from others experience, strength, and hope. One of the places Rose found support was through Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. You will also hear how those programs helped her and the tools they offer. Listen to Rose's unbelievable journey where she forgave the unforgivable. Welcome to the Grace Coach Podcast! Mike and Kevin share their insights from the Book of Colossians as they dive into Chapter 2:1-15. I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. 2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. 5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is. Spiritual Fullness in Christ 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[b] was put off when you were circumcised by[c] Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[d] alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Through His sacrifice, Jesus took the punishment that we deserved. He took our place so that we could be forgiven of all our sins. We couldn't pay for it or earn it, so He came to be our righteousness. Jesus willingly laid down His life for ours, and we have now been restored to life and adopted into His family! Tune in as we celebrate what God did to make us holy and blameless in His sight.
