Send us a textWhen James Murphy turned down writing for Seinfeld to pursue music, no one could have predicted he'd create one of the most influential dance-rock albums of the 2000s. "Sound of Silver" by LCD Soundsystem, released in March 2007, forever changed the landscape of electronic music by injecting it with raw emotional depth rarely found in the genre. In this episode, we immerse ourselves in the hypnotic world of LCD Soundsystem's sophomore masterpiece. We trace Murphy's journey from club DJ to reluctant frontman, exploring how his background shaped the band's distinctive sound – a brilliant fusion of disco beats, post-punk sensibilities, and electronic innovation. The album draws from an eclectic range of influences including the B-52s, David Bowie, and the Smiths, creating something both nostalgic and groundbreaking. We spend considerable time unpacking the emotional core of the album. "Someone Great" stands as a haunting meditation on loss that Murphy intentionally keeps ambiguous, allowing listeners to project their own experiences. Meanwhile, "All My Friends" captures the bittersweet reality of aging and evolving relationships with its relentless piano motif and poignant lyrics. These tracks demonstrate Murphy's remarkable ability to create dance music that makes you think as much as move. The cultural context of mid-2000s New York City looms large throughout our discussion. We explore how the album serves as both a celebration and critique of urban life, culminating in the love-hate letter "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down." We also discuss Murphy's complicated relationship with fame, which would later lead to LCD Soundsystem's dramatic (if temporary) farewell shows at Madison Square Garden.Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering this album for the first time, our track-by-track breakdown reveals the brilliant craftsmanship and emotional depth that makes "Sound of Silver" an enduring classic. In the Fifteenth episode There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I sit down with legendary DJ, producer, and remixer Justin Strauss for a wide-ranging conversation about his remarkable journey through music and nightlife culture. We explore Justin's early music experiences—from seeing The Beatles live to attending iconic shows at Electric Circus. He shares stories from his time as the frontman of the glam-punk band Milk n' Cookies, and his transition into DJing, including his first gig and influential residency at the legendary Mudd Club.Justin also reflects on his pivotal roles as resident DJ at iconic 80's NYC venues like Area, and The Ritz. Additionally, our conversation explores the origins and evolution of his prolific remix and production career, which continues to inspire across generations.“Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history - no less do so with such iconic credentials as Justin Strauss. Since he was 17, when his first band was signed to Island Records, Justin has had a career that reads like a Who's-Who of the music scene, spinning at nearly every dance club that you'd ever want to go to. Starting as DJ at New York's legendary Mudd Club, he spun his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area, Tunnel, M.K., Life, Centro Fly and more, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers not just in New York, but in the world. He has worked with the gamut of artists - Depeche Mode, Hot Chip, Sergio Mendez, Tina Turner, Jimmy Cliff, B-52s, Luther Vandross, 808 State, Malcolm McClaren, Skinny Puppy, Goldfrapp, LCD Soundsystem to name a few and on over 300 records! Much of the new dance crowd that goes to hear Justin DJ today, doesn't necessarily know his history; they simply love his spinning because he always keeps them dancing and surprised, seamlessly mixing between choice classics, delectable rarities and innovative beats. For Justin, no genre or style is off-limits – he can and will mix anything, so long as he can keep the crowd enthralled. His self-proclaimed mission is “connecting the dots” between what might otherwise seem disparate musical periods and styles, while introducing exciting new sounds. He does so with infectious passion, subverting preconceptions about what's old and new, and inspiring young DJs with his masterful skill and ever-youthful spirit. But Justin Strauss doesn't stop there. As half of the production duos, Whatever/Whatever and A/JUS/TED, he continued to produce and mix records, working on remixes for the likes of Hot Chip, William Onyeabor,LCD Soundsystem, Blood Orange, Holy Ghost!, Franz Ferdinand, Beyonce. Working on new projects Extra Credit with Joe Goddard of Hot Chip & Marcus Marr, and with Max Pask under their Each Other moniker, whose debut E.P.'s were mixed by Soulwax and released on their Deewee label, with new releases coming soon. Touring the world Dj'ing at Panorama Bar in Berlin, Robert Johnson in Frankfurt, Zunkunft in Zurich to name a few. In fact, he doesn't stop at all.”Support the show
Today's episode of Rock Docs is about "Shut Up and Play the Hits", a 2012 film about the final, uncontroversial, conclusive, never to be reversed ending of LCD Soundsystem directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace. Our guest today is self-professed LCD superfan and New York guy living in LA, film director Luca Morganti. Shut Up and Play the Hits, of course, is about LCD's 2011 retirement show at Madison Square Garden. The documentary features an interview with LCD mastermind James Murphy and journalist Chuck Klosterman, some backstage stuff before and after the show, and James Murphy's French bulldog. And perhaps more Arcade Fire than one would expect or prefer from the vantage point of 2025. Does this era of music and culture hold up? Is it too soon? Is LCD's dramatic conclusion and subsequent reformation the most (or least) interesting thing about the band? When will they finally put out their new album? All this and more in this episode of Rock Docs. We had such a fantastic chat with Lenny Zenith on this episode talking about his latest release “He/Hymn.” We talked about his decades long career, what's coming up next for him, and what he calls “lush pop”. A vibrant tapestry of sound that defies easy classification, Lenny Zenith's He/Hymn (released October 2024) is a sonic exploration of the redemptive power of music. “I honestly think this album marks an evolution in my songwriting,” he confesses. Each of He/Hymn's nine tracks stands as a miniature masterpiece, contributing uniquely to the album's overall narrative. Zenith's versatility as a songwriter and performer shines through. His lyrics, vibrant and often poetic, navigate universal themes of love, loss, and the human condition, while his musical prowess creates lush, cinematic soundscapes. Beginning his journey of self-discovery in New Orleans where he found refuge in compassionate doctors who helped him navigate the challenges of being a transgender adolescent, he emerged as a confident artist who fronted acclaimed bands such as Jennifer Convertible, Tenterhooks, Minor Planets, and Pop Combo. His collaborations with renowned producers James Murphy (pre-LCD Soundsystem) and Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) and performances with legendary acts like U2, Iggy Pop, The Replacements, and X underscore his influential presence in the music world. On y découvre "It's A Mirror", sensible et agoraphobe. La reprise du jour vient de Franz Ferdinand, qui s'approprie "All My Friends" de LCD Soundsystem. Côté live, Aerosmith brille avec "Dream On" enregistré à Boston. Les classiques de The Who, The Specials, ou encore Pearl Jam et The Strokes ponctuent cette soirée riche, conclue avec Ladytron et leur "Playgirl". How can digital art cement its place in contemporary culture? Can NFTs and blockchain technology continue to bridge the gap between artists and major institutions? As dialogue around digital art continues to evolve, questions of legitimacy, value, and long-term impact remain central to the conversation. In this episode of Object Subject Form, we examine how digital art is gaining recognition in major institutions and how emerging technologies are reshaping the art world. Currently the GM of CryptoPunks, Natalie Stone leads the iconic collection that ignited a contemporary digital art movement, with pieces in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, LACMA, and ICA Miami. She played a key role in CryptoPunks: Free to Claim, a Phaidon-published project with Zak Group that chronicles the rise of CryptoPunks and their cultural significance. Formerly at Google, she led Google I/O, crafted VR/AR experiences with artists like Childish Gambino and LCD Soundsystem, and developed an experimental new media program for artists working in AI. With a deep understanding of both traditional and digital art ecosystems, Natalie offers a unique perspective on the evolving dynamics of curation, collection, and creative innovation. In this conversation, we discuss the challenges and opportunities facing digital artists today, the role of traditional art institutions in Web3, and how blockchain technology is redefining provenance, ownership, and artistic value. Launched by Larva Labs in 2017, CryptoPunks consists of 10,000 unique pixel-art characters that became a symbol of digital ownership and the CryptoArt movement. Stored on the Ethereum blockchain, CryptoPunks are more than just collectibles—they've played a pivotal role in shaping conversations around provenance, value, and the integration of blockchain technology in the art world. — Connect with Natalie on X: https://x.com/naughtaliestone — Natalie's website: https://nataliestone.co/ — Connect with Natalie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stonenatalie/ — CryptoPunks: https://cryptopunks.app/ — Learn more about CryptoPunks on the Brand Hub: https://hub.cryptopunks.app/ — Follow CryptoPunks on X: https://x.com/cryptopunksnfts — CryptoPunks Book @ Phaidon: https://www.phaidon.com/store/fashion-and-pop-culture/cryptopunks-free-to-claim-9781838669300/ — Connect with simon: https://zaap.bio/simonclowes

He has worked with the gamut of artists - Depeche Mode, Hot Chip, Sergio Mendez, Tina Turner, Jimmy Cliff, B-52s, Luther Vandross, 808 State, Malcolm McClaren, Skinny Puppy, Goldfrapp, LCD Soundsystem to name a few and on over 300 records!MUSIC MENTIONSEarly years, from being in a band to becoming a DJ:- The Beatles- The Rolling Stones- The Kinks- The Who- James Brown- Chuck Berry- David Bowie- Milk 'N' Cookies- Island Records- Roxy Music- Sparks- Robert Palmer- Top of the Pops- New York Dolls- CBGB- Sex Pistols- The Mudd Club (NYC)- Studio 54- Max's Kansas City (NYC)- Paradise Garage (NYC)- François Kevorkian- The Limelight (NYC)- Aria (NYC)- Tunnel (NYC)- Danceteria (NYC)- Hurrah (NYC)- Palladium (NYC)- The Ritz (NYC)- Webster Hall (NYC)- Prince- Kraftwerk- Human League- Depeche Mode- Gang of Four- Tina Turner- Afrika Bambaataa- Liquid Liquid- ESG- SpotifyQ&A- Vinylmania (NYC)- Optimo- James Murphy- The Dare- Deewee- Soulwax- Fat White Family- Paranoid London- “Brat” by Charli XCX- “B2B” by Charli XCX- Hot Chip- Joe Goddard- Marcus Marr- Max Park- Prince LanguageDiscovering music today (30:42):- Clubs, DJ's & Friends- Bandcamp- BeatportFavorite clubs in NYC right now (38:52):- Gabriela (NYC)- Good Room (NYC)- Night Moves (NYC)- Public Records (NYC)- Nowadays (NYC)- Outer Heaven (NYC)- Jean's (NYC)- Baby's All Right (NYC)First album ever purchased (45:01):- “Meet The Beatles” by The BeatlesMost recent album purchased (45:45):- “Decius Vol. II (Splendour & Obedience)” by DeciusArtists discovered in the past year (46:48):- Decius- Otha- Charli XCX- Sleaford ModsDesert island discs (49:44):- “Computer World” by Kraftwerk- “Revolve” by The Beatles- “In the Jungle Groove” by James BrownCurrent and upcoming collab projects:- Each Other- Extra Credit

Kicking off Season 4 and ringing in 2025 with a cool cat that has widened my musical lens TENFOLD, Mr. John “Johnny Gowanus” Hennegan. Although I've known John since the early 80's and we've run with the same group of guys over the years, I had zero clue just how broad his taste in music is, so a big shoutout to Erik “Swede” Larson for suggesting I invite John to be a guest on GD&F in the first place! You were 100% right, Swede! John reminded me just how much Run DMC and The Beastie Boys can rock the house, and he introduced me to names like Fugazi, and LCD Soundsystem, neither of which I had ever even heard of but glad I know now.John also happens to be one of the only people that I know who grew up in and around the horseracing industry. Learn how John and his wingman, his brother Brad, have created epic films covering topics including the world's toughest footrace, Badwater 135, and Masters of Mini Golf, and The World Beard and Mustache Championship to name a few.Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us!Beastie Boys - Root Down https://music.apple.com/us/album/root-down/724771323?i=724771965Run DMC - Rock Box https://music.apple.com/us/album/rock-box/281812827?i=281812954Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion https://music.apple.com/us/album/sweet-emotion/1660108657?i=1660109293Ian MacKaye interviewhttps://youtu.be/GiE-jX-VLSk?si=plhpFJt95uk4KwRaFugazi - Waiting Room https://music.apple.com/us/album/waiting-room/49249845?i=49249816LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punkhttps://music.apple.com/us/album/daft-punk-is-playing-at-my-house/696523434?i=696523492Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetimehttps://music.apple.com/us/album/once-in-a-lifetime-live-2023-remaster/1694810554?i=1694811783

I love this conversation with John Kinsner because John has done so many things as he has made his way to becoming CEO of Black Ink Presents that I can't call our conversation anything less than a love letter to the business. We discuss a ton of things today: We talk about the tour for 'Labryinth'. John's experience sweeping floors, cleaning bathrooms, and all the other jobs he did on the way to being a CEO. Producing and creating content using existing IP. Symphony audiences and helping reach a new generation of fans. I talk about my love of LCD Soundsystem and we hit on influences and how you learn about art. Like I mention in the intro, this is a total love letter to the business of entertainment. 10 years ago, four friends with no restaurant experience, including LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, decided to open The Four Horsemen in Williamsburg. A decade later, and with a Michelin star under their belt, the team has published a new cookbook that also dives deep into what it took to make the restaurant work. We are joined by head chef Nick Curtola and restaurant manager Amanda McMillan to talk about the new book, The Four Horsemen: Food and Wine for Good Times from the Brooklyn Restaurant.
Davy Gardner started his career as an audio writer and creator whose work can be found on networks like Radiotopia, Wondery, and Audible, among others. He has won multiple awards and honors valuing his work as a writer in various genres such as comedy and audio drama. He was a playwright and performer for six years at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. For over two years now, Gardner has been the Head of Tribeca Audio and Curator of Audio Storytelling at Tribeca Enterprise. He made a great contribution to taking the “Film” out of the Tribeca Festival and pushing it further towards a multimedia festival that it has been for a while. In this episode, Davy discusses the evolution of the Tribeca Festival into a multimedia event and emphasizes the importance of audio storytelling. He highlights the challenges independent podcasters face, such as discoverability, and the role of curatorial entities like Tribeca in promoting innovative content. He also shares his journey from writing for the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater to his current role, stressing the need for creative risks and the value of public recognition. Finally, reflects on personal experiences, including the impact of his mother's death and the importance of recognizing and managing feelings of being "tuckered out."“I Don't Have A Billboard On Times Square”: The challenges that independent podcasters face + audio storytelling as an emerging genre parallel to what comes to everyone's mind when podcasting is mentioned + the disproportionate recognition the audio art form gets in the public eye and ways entities such as Tribeca can play a role in this. Michael Aredes, currently at NYC's award winning spot Superbueno, has long worked and championed both bar and audio culture. He has presented a seminar on the link between the two and formerly crafted cocktails at James Murphy's (LCD Soundsystem) bar Nightmoves. This former Punch Bartender in Residence came from a very musical family: Michael played many instruments and sang. Now he channels that passion into amazing playlists for his queer Latino pop up, Noche Traviesa, which travels around the country. Audio-visual duo Mermaid Chunky have exploded on the London music scene with their wicked wit and sophisticated beats. Thanks to a stop at his local coffee shop in Brooklyn, DFA founder and LCD Soundsystem electro-deity James Murphy quickly Shazamed the track and rushed back to the office to start his investigation and sign them to the label. We are LOVING this summer’s banger, “Chaperone.”
