Welcome to “Empathy is Needed When Things Get Heated”, Episode #131 of Co-creating Peace, a podcast series about conscious communication and conflict transformation.  I have a great story to share with you, told by the three men who lived it, about how an unattended fire that could have been a catastrophe at multiple levels, instead became a powerful wisdom opportunity and a relationship-strengthening experience. Highlights you won't want to miss:how – with the right perspective and approach – a stronger, deeper relationship can literally emerge from a fire like a phoenix reborn;a powerful way to rebuild trust;the ways in which a relationship can be strengthened when we go through a difficult experience together;how empathy and acknowledgement can heal the one who gives them as well as the one who receives them.Joining me to tell you this story are the 3 men who were involved in the incident, Edwin Rutsch, Zak Wear, and Daniel Hirtz.Zak Wear and Daniel Hirtz are active members of the Empathy Movement who were at the Empathy Center for the Empathy Facilitator training. You may remember Edwin Rutsch from Episode #103, when he shared some truly inspiring information about the Empathy Movement with us. Welcome to “Empathy: The First Step to Peace”, Episode #103 of Co-creating Peace, a series about conscious communication and conflict transformation. All around us we hear about the many divides we are experiencing as a nation, and as a specie. Solutions to the issues that divide us are complex, will take time to discover and then act upon, and the division surrounding them only delays discovery of the solutions. The good news is that the actual divides themselves, the ragged, wounded chasms of human discord are easier to heal than you might imagine – not necessarily easy, but easier than you might imagine. Healing begins when we stop the “think like me or I will hate and destroy you” approach, and instead, mindfully create a safe space in which to deeply hear one another, and to approach those conversations with openness, curiosity, and the desire to understand. In other words, seeking to give and receive empathy - something we all long for, yet rarely experience. From mutual empathy bridges of peace are built, and a myriad of possibilities are born. We've talked about the power of dialogue in many past episodes of this podcast, including episodes #86, #89, #93, #94 #95 and #96. Joining me is Edwin Rutsch, to talk about the nature of empathy, and ways we can evoke & experience empathy with others through Empathy Circles.Highlights of our conversation include:A definition of empathyEmpathy through deep listeningThe impact of mutual listening & mutual empathyBringing empathy circles into school curriculumEdwin Rutsch is founding director of the Center for Building a Culture of Empathy. How often do you challenge your assumptions about others and get curious - especially about those in your workplace or your family who have different views than you, political or otherwise? In our increasingly polarized society, my guest today, Mónica Guzmán, believes that we can't count on institutions to bridge those divides for us - we have to do it one conversation, one person, at a time.  Today, we discussed how she got involved in the work of helping people understand each other better and what role her journalism career played in that mission. We dived into how to bring emotion back into conversations rather than trying to win arguments with data, and a magic question you can ask people who disagree with you to better understand them. We talked about how to have more curious conversations and how to navigate roadblocks. Some great tips for those of you going into election season or tense family dinners over the holidays!Key Takeaways:You can't have a negotiation if there is no talking. We are judging more while talking less and that only leads further to divide, and not to empathy and understanding. The level we think change doesn't matter, one-on-one conversations, is where change happens the most. You often believe that the people that you love and care about who disagree with you are not the majority but an exception to the rule. However, if you talk with others who disagree with you, you will find out that they are not the exception, but the rule"If we don't engage across disagreement, we risk not seeing variables that are really important to other people, and make for a far more honest accounting of everything that's at play when people make decisions." —  Mónica GuzmánAbout Mónica Guzmán, Senior Fellow for Public Practice at Braver Angels:Mónica Guzmán is a bridge builder, journalist, and entrepreneur who lives for great conversations sparked by curious questions. She's the director of digital and storytelling at Braver Angels, the nation's largest cross-partisan grassroots organization working to depolarize America; host of live interview series at Crosscut; and cofounder of the award-winning Seattle newsletter The Evergrey. Monica's new book, I Never Thought of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times has been praised by the media, readers and influencers alike. She was a 2019 fellow at the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, where she studied social and political division, and a 2016 fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, where she researched how journalists can rethink their roles to better meet the needs of a participatory public. She was named one of the 50 most influential women in Seattle, served twice as a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes, and plays a barbarian named Shadrack in her besties' Dungeons & Dragons campaign. In our world with so many diametrically opposed beliefs regarding politics, or policy, or religion, or anything else, is it possible to have too much empathy? Is it possible to connect with those who believe things that appear to be drastically different from our own beliefs? My guest today, Edwin Rutsch, and I talk about how the answer to what we need is, in fact, more empathy in the culture and more support for those practicing empathy. Edwin has created and rolled out a powerful framework for harnessing empathy and getting people from all walks of life to open up, talk, and truly listen to one another with Empathy Circles. Tune in to hear his great stories of putting up empathy tents at the most heated rallies and protests and what magically happened when he did. Key Takeaways:The Empathy Circle is to discuss whatever the group wants to discuss in a safe space.Empathy Circles are not about coming to an agreement about policies, they are about finding understanding and connection, even when we disagree.Empathy burnout comes from too little empathy and support in the system, not from too much empathy.  "Start to build empathy where you can in your environment - in your family, in your work, or in your school.” —  Edwin Rutsch About Edwin Rutsch: Edwin Rutsch is the founding director of the Center for Building a Culture of Empathy. The center's website, CultureOfEmpathy.com, is the internet's most comprehensive portal for empathy-related material. What is it that separates empathy and action? For some, it’s easier to remain focused on ourselves than it is to clue in to what’s going on with the folks around us. For others, we’re worried that by empathizing with others, we might somehow weaken our own ideals and perspectives. Edwin Rutsch has made it his mission in life to help teach what empathy is, and more importantly how to embrace it. Because it’s when we realize that we don’t have to abandon who we are to be with someone else, that something truly powerful can happen.

For many of us engaged in conflict or embroiled in a dispute, it can be very difficult to muster up empathy and compassion for the other side. The longer the conflict goes unresolved it seems the less empathy we have for them as a human being. In this first of our four episode series--Conflict and Empathy: Where Has Empathy and Compassion Gone?-- we will introduce the “wheel of empathy” and the “feel of empathy” as defined by Edwin Rutsch, Founder of a global empathy movement called The Center for Building a Culture of Empathy. We will also discuss how compassion intertwines with empathy and set the foundation for how you build empathy. Edwin Rutsch is the founding director of the Center for Building a Culture of Empathy.
