The Body Series returns this week with my dear friend Molly, a licensed social worker, who shares her experience working as a therapist in NYC. We discuss the cultural fatigue around therapy speak and “trauma,” how CBT, DBT, Attachment Theory, etc. got subsumed into (and weaponized by?) mainstream discourse, and the current trend toward somatic healing practices. We also explore the downsides of overidentifying with diagnoses, and put Molly's expertise in conversation with past Body Series guests, Emmeline Clein, Eloise Skinner, and Sloane Elizabeth. Discussed: “Overanalyzed: A series about how we fell out of love with therapy”, The Cut (2024) “Tell Me Why It Hurts” on The Body Keeps the Score, NY Mag (2023) Past The Body Series episodes: Emmeline Clein, Eloise Skinner, Sloane Elizabeth
Today we dive into "identity" - what it's comprised of, how we feel lost and burned out when we don't have a strong identity, and exercises we can do to uncover, and live by, our values. Eloise Skinner (website and Instagram) leads us through these exercises at the second half of the episode, and we also take a look at celebrities who have struggled with their identity before.

We chat with Eloise Skinner, author of ‘But Are You Alive?', founder and psychotherapist. It's almost become a cliche to talk about finding meaning and purpose at work, especially with regard to the expectations of millennials and Generation Z, and what they want from employers. So what do leaders need to know about this? What does purpose and meaning really mean to young employees? And how should leaders facilitate this quest for meaning? Eloise Skinner is well placed to answer these questions, through her work as an author and psychotherapist. Having started her career in corporate law, Eloise's work now focuses on existential topics like meaning, purpose and identity. Eloise's newest book, ‘But Are You Alive?', focuses on finding meaning and purpose in everyday life. We discuss the difference between meaning and purpose, practical tips to help people find their purpose, whether they are established or aspiring leaders, and what young people really want from the world of work. Zoe and Paul also discuss recent news stories about Nihal Arthanayake and inclusion at the BBC, as well as the government's new AI skills framework for organisations. No, not the Michelangelo biography by Irving Stone, but the highs and lows of the maddening, marvellous process of writing a business book. In this best bits episode I pick out the pearls from the last few conversations, and this time the common theme is the pain and pleasure of writing a book, the unrelenting difficulty of it, and the extraordinary joy and meaning it provides. Often all in the same moment. Whether you're agonising over your manuscript or feeling ecstatic about the progress you're making you'll relate to all of this, and if you're lacking motivation, you'll find it here in spades. With insights from: Steven Adjei on the nature of pain; Richard Charkin on the visceral vulnerability of becoming an author; Melissa Romo on the challenges of making the complex simple; Catherine Erdly on detail wrangling; Susan Doering on the relentless work of marketing; Eloise Skinner on dealing with the soul suck of social media; Adam Bryant on the all-consumingness of writing a book; and Alex Hill on why we do it at all. Imagine what Michelangelo could have achieved if he'd listened to this...
'I have worked with a coach in the past who used to tell me things that have been very helpful, like it is your responsibility to the book to try and communicate its concepts out there, if you believe it is that helpful, you need to be sharing it with people. These are the things that I repeat to myself every day as I prepare to post one thing on Instagram.' Writing a book means marketing a book, and marketing a book means becoming visible as an author. And that isn't always easy, even when you have a huge following. Eloise Skinner knows what it takes to write books (But Are You Alive? is her third), but she also knows that the writing alone isn't enough. To share her hard-won insights into what gives life meaning, which she's discovered through an extraordinary professional and personal life - including her work as a lawyer, as a psychotherapist and existential therapist and her time in an urban monastic community - she had to get comfortable being uncomfortable. In this thoughtful conversation, she tells me what that involves, and how she gets over herself to get her message out there.

Wouldn't it be easier for someone to just “give you the answer” and tell you what your purpose was in life? Easier, maybe. More meaningful? Probably not. Finding our purpose for why we're here requires walking the path and experiencing the journey, to a degree. Eloise is an entrepreneur, author, and existential therapist. She is the founder of One Typical Day (an education technology start-up) and The Purpose Workshop (a social impact consultancy). In this episode, we'll hear about: Eloise's experience with experimental monasticism Her journey to existential therapy Why “introducing depth” is better than simply “giving the answers” The pressures of niching down And much more! Thanks again for listening to the Humanitarian Entrepreneur podcast! If you found this episode inspiring and meaningful, be sure to leave us a review wherever you're listening. And don't forget to share this episode with someone that you know who might be feeling like they haven't found their purpose in life. It can really help. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Eloise!
