In this Shortcast edition, Donald Miller, author of Building a StoryBrand, shares how applying storytelling principles can bring clarity, purpose, and momentum to your personal and professional life. Drawing from narrative theory, Donald explains how to see your life as a story—complete with a clear goal, supporting characters, and an inciting incident—and how productivity begins with the power of focus and finish. In this Shortcast, we explore: The Life-as-Story Framework: Donald outlines the classic storytelling structure and how it applies to real life: a character with a problem, a guide, a plan, and a call to action that leads to either success or failure. The Power of an Inciting Incident: We discuss how deliberately creating an inciting incident—like signing up for a marathon or making a public commitment—can push you into meaningful action. Designing the Ideal Workday: After battling writer's block, Donald took a road trip and absorbed every productivity audiobook he could, using what he learned to build a personalized, high-focus day planner. Focus and Finish: Donald explains how the two most important productivity principles are narrowing your focus and completing what you start—because only finished work makes an impact. Clearing the Clutter of Life's Script: By eliminating unnecessary “characters” and distractions from your life story, you can make space for the plot that actually matters. Donald's insights offer a unique, narrative-driven approach to productivity that helps you clarify your goals, trim the distractions, and finish what matters most. In this episode of the Celebrate Kids podcast, Dr. Kathy discusses the critical issue of student engagement in education. She highlights the findings from a recent Brookings Institution survey revealing that only one-third of children are enthusiastic about school by age 13, contrasting sharply with parents' perceptions. Dr. Kathy addresses the reasons behind children's boredom and disinterest in learning, emphasizing the importance of making education relevant and beneficial. She also explores how parents can respond to their children's frustrations with school, acknowledging that while some level of boredom can build resilience, it can also lead to a diminished love for learning. Tune in for valuable insights on fostering enthusiasm in education and maintaining a positive learning environment for children.

The world is obsessed with metrics and status. But the most important currency is the one you're missing. Most of us spend our careers chasing validation – titles and paychecks. I did too. So did our guest Matt Emerzian. The brutal reality? The gap between these two answers is why you feel empty. Values as Weapons: When everything feels uncertain, non-negotiable values become your armor. The Self-Talk Intervention: Your internal dialogue is the most revealing data point of your life. Most of us wouldn't speak to enemies the way we speak to ourselves. The Counterintuitive Path: The healing sequence is backwards: internal healing → relationship repair → serving others. Most get stuck at step one forever. In Episode 58 of The Steak Lad Experience, I sat down with ex AFL footballer and all time great bloke, Steven Baker. Steven is a man who has done a lot of podcasts in his time and as such, I wanted our conversation to be unlike any other he had ever done before. After having the chance to re listen to our conversation, I am convinced we achieved this goal and for that I am very grateful!During our chat we touched on the early childhood memories that made him into the man he is today, the internal power that comes from overcoming adversity, why it is always better to speak up when you are going through hard times, why you shouldn't take life so seriously, the best memories of his great friend, Shane Warne and much much more. For someone that grew up watching the great man go about it in the AFL during his prime, this was a pinch yourself moment for me personally and from my perspective provided a unique insight into the personality we all know and love.Steven Baker - InstagramDarcy Tobin (The Steak Lad) - YouTube, Instagram, Tik Tok & FacebookWatch This Ep on YouTube - https://youtube/BakerEmail - darcy@thesteaklad.comWebsite - thesteaklad.comUse the Discount code “PODCAST” for 10% off my Beef Tallow via thesteaklad.com
The podcast is called Finding Meaning. What does it mean then to find meaning?
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Tatjana Schnell, a leading researcher in the psychology of meaning, to talk about what it really means to live a meaningful life. We explore how people navigate existential crises, the different ways we construct meaning, and why the experience of belonging is so central to our well-being. This conversation is both intellectually rich and deeply human — a reflection on what keeps us going when things feel uncertain, empty, or directionless.Support the show
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 "Discovering purpose in Christ is like unearthing a treasure within your soul; the deeper you dig, the more abundant and eternal its riches become." This profound truth resonates deeply with those who seek fulfillment beyond the surface of everyday life. When we turn our hearts toward Christ, we embark on a journey that reveals our unique identity and calling, igniting a passion that transcends worldly pursuits. In Jeremiah 29:11, God said, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." These words remind us that our existence is not accidental; we are woven into His grand design. When we embrace our identity in Him, we will see how our experiences, gifts, and passions align perfectly with His divine purpose. I remembered a story about a young woman who found herself empty and unfulfilled after years of chasing societal expectations and accolades. One day, during a quiet moment of prayer, she felt a whisper in her heart urging her to seek Christ more earnestly. As she delved into Scripture and surrounded herself with a supportive community, she discovered a calling to help others find their voice through writing. Her newfound purpose transformed her life and touched countless others along the way. As we continue this journey of self-discovery, remember that your journey is uniquely yours, crafted by the Creator who knows you intimately. However, each step in faith brings us closer to understanding how to contribute to His kingdom because God's grace empowers us to fulfill our calling with joy and confidence. So, keep seeking and keep trusting because purpose awaits in His grace. Ephesians 2:10 says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Prayer for the Day!Heavenly Father, thank You for the unique purpose and identity You have given us in Christ. Help us to seek You diligently as we uncover the treasures within our souls. May Your grace guide us as we navigate our paths, and may we always remember that our worth comes from being Your beloved children. In Jesus' name. Amen.

This is week two of a great conversation with Erin Williams about the book Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It by Jennifer Breheny Wallace. Jamie believes that infusing play and creativity into the workplace can enhance problem-solving and overall well-being as we move away from a strict focus on efficiency and profitability. Good ideas can come from anyone, regardless of their position in the organization, and leaders should be curious and open to all ideas. In episode 7 of season 5, I lecture on chapter 6 from the 9th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I describe the Path-Goal leadership approach, highlight the basics of how Path-Goal theory works, and conclude with strengths and criticisms of the model. Before the lecture, I was joined by Elizabeth Eder Northern for the Living Leadership segment. Liz graduated from Trinity University in 2009 with a Bachelor's degree. As an undergrad, she double majored in Religion and math, was an three time National Qualifier on the cross country team, and took full advantage of all that Trinity has to offer. She was a true Renaissance person and embraced the university's Liberal Arts ethos. After leaving Trinity she completed a Master's degree at Penn State and has served as the longtime Director of Research at Tarrant County College (TCC). In addition to being recognized by the Fort Worth Business Press with 40 Under 40 Award, Liz was also named as one of the Trinity University Alumni Association Tower 5 Award recipients in 2019. In our conversation she talks about the importance of mentors and friends, both in terms of pushing her to achieve things she never would have dreamed of and for holding each other accountable. As a leader of a team at TCC, she details the importance of hiring for complementary skill sets, helping team members maximize their strengths, and finding meaning in the work. Liz describes why setting developmental goals is good, both for the individual and the organization, and why having a leader that trusts their followers is paramount. Liz and I also talk about her successful distance running career (which isn't over!). While her accomplishments as a distance runner are wildly impressive, I hope you'll agree that her leadership approach and philosophy make her the kind of person we'd all like to work and learn with. She is a great role model for leaders everywhere. I hope you enjoy our conversation. And please, drop us a note on LinkedIn - or send me a tweet (@TingleJK) - to let us know your Take Home.

We are multidimensional beings, capable of molding our character at any stage in our life. Our identity is fluid and malleable, and we can continue to evolve and enhance it to realize our highest potential. Viktor Frankl had to learn how to master this, having lived in most of the 20th century, one of the more transformative periods in world history. This Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist is most known for being a Holocaust survivor, but in reality, his contributions to mental health and psychology are his true legacy. His seminal book, "Man's Search for Meaning," and logotherapy, a psychological approach centered on meaning creation, is rooted in his observations at the concentration camps, where he witnessed unthinkable cruelty and injustice. Frankl prioritized guiding people to find their deeper purpose in good and bad times. In the process, he discovered himself and crystallized his mission. To glean wisdom from Frankl's incredible life and work, I invited Alex Pattakos, Ph.D., affectionately nicknamed "Dr. Meaning." Alex is the co-founder of the Global Meaning Institute and co-creator of MEANINGology® —the study and practice of meaning in life, work, and society. A prolific author, he has written two international best-selling books on the human quest for meaning: The OPA! Way', inspired by Greek philosophy, mythology, and culture, and 'Prisoners of Our Thoughts', written at the personal urging of Viktor Frankl himself.

From rock musician to marketing entrepreneur, Barry's journey is marked by creativity and perseverance. He founded his marketing firm to channel his love for creativity into helping companies discover their unique strengths. Barry's five-step brand re-engineering process—Brand Assessment, Technical Immersion, Design Brand Strategy, Execute, and Celebrate & Launch—focuses on leveraging a company's inherent qualities. His book, The Power of Differentiation, aims to inspire companies to win hearts, minds, and market share by engaging their people meaningfully. --- Help Your People Find Meaning with Barry LaBov Good day, listeners. Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint. I'm interviewing today Barry LaBov, the owner of LaBov and Beyond Marketing, helping companies go to market through a dealer or distributor network by training and inspiring their people. He's also the author of the upcoming, The Power of Differentiation. So, Barry, welcome to the show. Steve, thank you. I'm a big fan and it's an honor to be here with you today. So I'm ready to have a lot of fun. Well, hey, we're going to start with a really fun journey that you had because you were a rock musician turned entrepreneur. So, two questions here. One is how the heck a rock musician becomes an entrepreneur, especially in a field different from their own, because some rock musicians are really good entrepreneurs selling their music. And secondly, what is your personal Why and how does that connect to what you do? Well, that's a great question. I wanted as a young boy to be a rock and roll musician. I wanted to write songs. So, at a very early age, I learned how to play drums. Then when I hit maybe 10 years old, I learned how to play keyboards. My dad showed me four different kinds of chords on an organ, and I figured out how to do that. So, I was in a band with my brother. I played drums and keyboards, keyboards with my right hand. And by the way, it did not sound very good, I guarantee it. But I was 14 years old, my brother was 12. He's on guitar, I'm singing, he's singing, and we're playing in a two-man band. From that, I recorded songs, wrote songs of mine, played in bands for the next 10 or so years, had songs on American Bandstand, the Billboard charts, and had songs published by Barry Madelow and Natalie Cole. We had a song on American Bandstand that actually did well that day. So all of that, but I have to say with all humility, my music, Steve, sold well under 1 million copies. So I was not making a killing at that. But what happened was I then started to write jingles, those irritating little ditties. And here's how I went from being a rock musician to running a marketing company. I was writing jingles and doing what's known as audio work, recording work for companies. And North American Van Lines, very large moving company here in the United States, called me up because I had done a little work with them. And they said to me, Barry, we want you to take over our marketing department. We're going to sell it to you and we will give you a three-year contract for all of our marketing. And being the great entrepreneur I was, Steve, I said, no I don't think so. I don't think I'm really a marketing guy. I'm a music guy. But I'm going to give you the names of all these different companies locally to help you out. And they went, okay. Well, they called me again, Steve. And they called me and called me and called me again. Then one day, about a year later, they called me up again and said, Barry, we want you to buy our marketing department and become our marketing agency. Please do it. And I said, I've given you the names of all these other companies. I've begged you to talk to them. Why are you coming back to me? And he said, well, we've talked to those companies, but Barry,
