Arlesey has stood the test of time. It is mentioned briefly in the Domesday Book of 1086 and has been through many reinventions over the centuries. The television series ‘Midsomer Murders' has been on-air since 1997. In a fictional rural setting, each episode of the British crime drama sees an individual harbour dark secrets as part of the ongoing whodunnit murder mystery. In a curious twist of life imitating art, the picturesque village of Furneux Pelham in Hertfordshire became an unwitting backdrop for a real-life murder mystery in 2004. An elderly man had been found dead on the front doorstep of his Grade II listed cottage. News outlets dispatched reporters to Furneux Pelham, and the media began to draw parallels between the murder and the fictional television series. As time passed and the crime went unsolved, life in Furneux Pelham slowly returned to normal. However, sometime later, a jailhouse confession would thrust the village back into the spotlight…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. On this episode of They Walk Among America… It is often said that money is the root of all evil. Whether in the relentless pursuit of wealth or driven by desperation to maintain it, individuals can find themselves committing unimaginable acts. The Roseboro family seemed to possess everything one could desire: a blissful marriage, a nice home, and a thriving business worth millions. During weekends, Michael and Jan Roseboro frequently spent quality time in their backyard with their children, engaging in activities such as swimming or simply enjoying each other's company. Nevertheless, appearances can be deceiving. Some who live a life of luxury are never content, and they are willing to do anything to get what they want…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. On this episode of They Walk Among America… Ethylene glycol is a colorless and odorless compound with a sweet taste commonly found in antifreeze. Ingesting a sufficient quantity of it can lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs, organ damage, seizures, and, ultimately, death. The effects of this poison typically manifest within one to twelve hours after ingestion, initially impacting the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. Within twelve to 24 hours, ethylene glycol starts affecting the heart and lungs, while toxic calcium oxalate crystals begin to form. After 24 hours or more, the metabolized poison takes its toll on the kidneys, and death becomes possible at any stage. This type of poisoning results in a slow and agonizing demise, yet it often remains imperceptible. One particularly troubling aspect is that antifreeze poisoning does not readily show up on standard toxicology tests. Consequently, if a death doesn't appear suspicious, the presence of antifreeze poisoning may go undetected…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. On this episode of They Walk Among America… It's often said that the bond between a mother and her child is incomparable, even transcending the boundaries of life and death. A mother forges a connection with her child that defies any worldly explanation. Such is the power of a mother's intuition. In 2004, this truth manifested in a remarkable way when a mother encountered a girl who bore an uncanny resemblance to someone she knew all too well. Having tragically lost her own daughter following a fire in 1997, she was struck by an overwhelming sense of familiarity upon seeing this girl…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. Double jeopardy is a legal principle that somebody cannot go on trial for the same crime more than once. The rule, over 800 years old, was put in place to protect the innocent against judicial misconduct that could see them convicted, even after being found not guilty. A pivotal shift occurred twenty years ago, with the UK's double jeopardy law undergoing a significant transformation through the Criminal Justice Act 2003. This introduced substantial reforms, particularly for serious crimes. The amendment allowed the possibility of retrial for someone previously acquitted, if "new and compelling" evidence surfaced…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. At first glance, the Foster family possessed all the trappings of a picture-perfect life; a sprawling mansion worth £1.2 million nestled in the quiet expanse of Maesbrook, Shropshire, a privately educated daughter, and a fleet of luxury cars. In the summer of 2008, everything changed in an instant. As dawn broke on August 26th, an explosive eruption jolted the neighbourhood awake, drawing sleepy residents from their beds. Flames engulfed the Foster's lavish home, and thick smoke penetrated the morning sky. An investigation into the inferno would unearth the unsettling truth that sometimes, appearances can be deceiving….*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. On this episode of They Walk Among America… Every individual possesses unique fingerprints, making them invaluable in resolving homicide investigations. The year 1911 marked a significant milestone as U.S. courts officially recognized fingerprints as a dependable method of identification. Advancements continued into the 1970s when forensic professionals pioneered a novel technique—fingerprinting the deceased. This innovative approach incorporated chemical powders and photosensitive paper to capture prints. A pivotal moment occurred in 1978, as forensic experts in Miami, Florida, adopted this revolutionary method while probing a triple murder case in a local spa. At first, the crime appeared to be a robbery gone wrong. However, the examination by the forensic experts revealed that they were looking for somebody much closer to home…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. In 1952, Cardiff was a bustling industrial hub, a Welsh city that was in the midst of post-war construction. Cardiff docks were the main economic driver, and they welcomed ships from all across the globe, trading goods and raw materials. This trade led to the city quickly becoming a hub of multiculturalism. In particular, it became home to many Somali sailors who had sought new pastures. That same year, one of those sailors would find himself at the centre of a murder investigation that would highlight the dangers of a biassed justice system...*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. On this episode of They Walk Among America… Teachers hold a significant role in the lives of young children, second only to parents in terms of influence. Within the school environment, they are entrusted with the care and education of children, nurturing their growth and safeguarding their well-being. Consequently, parents place a considerable amount of trust in their children's teachers, relying on them to act in the best interests of their students. However, in 1998, a shocking violation of that trust unfolded in a school in Seattle, sending shockwaves worldwide. The case served as a stark reminder of the double standards that exist within society when it comes to female sexual predators…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. As time progressed, DNA testing methods evolved, becoming increasingly sophisticated and refined. Cold cases that had remained unsolved for decades were revisited periodically, with renewed hope that advanced forensic analysis could crack the case. With the turn of the millennium, further advancements in DNA extraction techniques emerged, enhancing the ability to obtain valuable genetic material from even the most challenging samples. In 2007, a massive breakthrough was made in two unsolved cases from the 1970s, which showed that an unidentified serial killer was responsible...*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. On this episode of They Walk Among America… In the quiet middle-class neighbourhood of Queens Village, New York City, Harriet Mulhauser was just getting ready for the day ahead. It was March 20th, 1927, and Harriet's morning was disturbed by a sharp knock on her front door. The sun was starting to set on The Blackbird Leys estate at around 4:30 PM on December 10th, 1994. Henry Sheriff was decorating the back room at his home on Monks Close when he was interrupted by a loud bang, a noise that echoed throughout the nearby properties. Henry wondered if it was someone joyriding again or a car back-firing. A short time after the deafening sound, a 999 call was made to the police, but when the operator answered the phone, nobody spoke. All she could hear on the other end of the line was a man groaning and gasping for breath…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. Once the match finished, a gang of agitated spectators gathered outside and began to start trouble. At first, it was just quarrelling between opposing fans before bottles and rocks were hurled through the air. The police made their presence known to dissipate the crowd, and eventually, the officers successfully diffused the situation. With their job done, they left, but the next morning the police were contacted and asked to return to Abington. A woman had been walking down an alleyway around a mile from the County Ground. On this episode of They Walk Among America… One balmy afternoon in October 1946, one rancher set out on a routine trip from his farm in Caldwell, Idaho, to his ranch in Jordan Valley. The desolate highway stretched out before him, except for the occasional passing car. As he rounded a bend in the road, he observed a man pulled over to the side with his hood up, indicating trouble. As he drew closer, he recognised the man as somebody who had previously worked for him. He slowed down his car and approached to offer assistance. After crouching down to examine the engine, he felt a heavy object crash down onto his skull, sending a wave of pain throughout his body….*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. Arlene Fraser was at home in the Scottish suburb of New Elgin, one night in early April 1998. From her living room, she noticed something flickering in the darkness outside. Curiosity got the better of her, and Arlene glanced out of the window to see that her car was engulfed in flames. The fire service was alerted, and the blaze was extinguished. The cause was attributed to a mechanical fault. However, Arlene was doubtful. The relationship with her husband had turned violent. He had attacked Arlene the previous month. She suspected he may have been responsible for the fire, and things took an even darker turn two weeks later when Arlene Fraser seemingly vanished into thin air… (Part 1 of 3).*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched by Emily G. Wath upon Dearne near Rotherham was a once popular mining area. Throughout the 19th and early-20th centuries, the demand for coal rose exponentially. As a result, many miners settled in the small South Yorkshire town. They spent most of their lives carrying out the physically intense and life-threatening occupation that powered homes and businesses across Britain. When retirement came, the workers had built a life and had families in the area, so they chose to stay. Their sense of security was shattered in 1988, however, when four people were found murdered — the victims' bodies had been severely mutilated. Officers from the South Yorkshire constabulary would quickly learn that Wath upon Dearne had become the hunting ground for a serial killer, who fantasised about matching the notoriety of The Yorkshire Ripper and Jack the Ripper… *** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. It was a cold and frosty morning in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, on Friday, February 15th, 2019. Children across the country woke up excited because it was the last day of school before half term. For 19-year-old Leah Croucher, it was a day like any other. She got out of bed, got dressed and set off for work. Leah usually made the short journey on foot, but as 9 AM came and went, she never arrived. In some religions and communities, great weight is placed on the family and its so-called collective honour. Name and reputation can overshadow everything else, and a specific code of honour must be followed. Sometimes, when perceived shame has been brought upon a family, the alleged wrongdoer is forced to pay the ultimate price…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. The dark web is part of the internet that is not indexed by search engines. It's rife with criminal activity, from drug sales all the way to targeted attacks. In August 2022, a man was browsing the dark web when he came across a website claiming to provide hitmen for a fee. Curiosity got the better of him, and as he scanned through the forum, one post piqued his interest; a request seemingly from a female asking for a man to be killed in Norfolk…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. On the evening of Saturday, June 9th, pubs across the country were filled to the brim. It was the second day of the 2012 European football championship. Groups of friends jostled to find seats in front of the television screens in the pubs throughout Bedfordshire, to watch the matches; The Netherlands versus Denmark and Germany versus Portugal. Hours later, in the early morning, things were starting to wind down when a young man appeared outside the White Hart pub in Ampthill. He looked dishevelled, and his tracksuit was saturated in blood…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. Ian Cooke was at home in Brighton, East Sussex, on the morning of August 25th, 2016, when his phone rang. The caller was his 21-year-old son, Ash. Ash told his father he had been struggling to contact his girlfriend, 19-year-old Shana Grice. She was not answering her phone, and to compound matters, Shana had failed to show up for work. Unable to leave his shift, Ash asked his father to go and check on Shana at her home on Chrisdory Road…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. At around 4 PM on July 17th, 2015, John Jr. drove to Marsh Street to ensure his father was ok. He approached the front door and could hear the television blaring from the living room. John Jr. noticed the door was unlocked — a curious detail as his father was very safety-conscious. He slowly stepped inside. It took John Jr. a few seconds to register what he saw in the hallway. There was a trail of blood leading to the living room, and he felt he had no choice but to see where it led…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. Strong gales were sweeping across much of the United Kingdom on the night of Sunday, January 24th, 1993. Temperatures dipped below freezing, as most of the country found relief in the warmth and comfort of their homes. On the quiet estate of Birch Hill in Bracknell, Berkshire, seven-year-old Stacey Queripel was sent to bed early by her mother. She had no plans to go to sleep. Instead, Stacey put on a tracksuit over her pyjamas, packed a small bag and then set off into the blustery darkness...*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. As night fell, Roy Lightfoot returned home from work. He closed the door behind him and anticipated hearing the delicate sound of the dog's paws on the floor as Tessa came to greet him. But instead, the home was eerily silent. Roy called out to Margaret but received no response. The property was evidently empty… *** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. Shrill sirens could be heard as firefighters jumped from their trucks to control the flames emanating from the imposing concrete structure. Many of the doors and windows had been boarded up with plywood in a futile attempt to dissuade trespassers. It was an arduous task for the emergency crew to remove the boards before they could gain entry and try to extinguish the growing blaze. After the flames were put out, to their surprise, firefighters discovered the badly-burned body of what appeared to be a young woman. An investigation was launched which would take the police into the grim underworld of the city's disenfranchised and dispossessed…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. She rolled her car to a stop and rushed over to attend to the man lying on the verge. It had been a particularly bitter winter, and the ice in the canal was just beginning to thaw. As the men strolled by the waterway, they spotted something floating in the murky canal. It appeared to be bobbing up and down with the flow of the water, but it was not gathering any traction. The men got closer to inspect the unfamiliar object. They could see that it was something wrapped up inside a piece of carpet — there appeared to be fluid leaking from it. The three managed to pull the object over to the bank of the canal, and were horrified to see a human foot protruding from the end of the carpet… *** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G.
