Every year the UK produces around 50 million tyres for disposal. They are supposed to be sent for recycling. Instead, big money is being made by diverting tyres to illegal and dangerous 'pyrolysis' plants where they are melted down to extract oil and steel. Together with a team of journalists from Source Material, a not-for-profit group specialising in climate and corruption, we follow the tyres from the UK to India using tracking devices. The team discovers just how large scale this largely illicit business has become. Earlier this year, a makeshift pyrolysis plant exploded near Mumbai, killing four people. It had been processing tyres from abroad. Reporter Paul Kenyon confronts a tyre trader in the north of England who admits to shipping his waste tyres to India for pyrolysis.

While we do enjoy going off on wild tangents or thinking about "what if," sometimes it's important to just go back to the crucial source material. The specific writing in-game can not only work to create a vibrant world, but with careful study, can inform the overall trajectory of what you can expect to come. WoW is no different, so today we're taking a look at a set of perhaps overlooked, but no less beloved, sets of writing from the game. This is an introduction to Calvary Maiden, a source Tolstoy used to portray the experiences of soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars. Tolstoy utilized a variety of such works to craft, more than 50 years after the events depicted in War & Peace, the spirit of that first decade and a half of the 19th century. This source material was an unconventional choice as Calvary Maiden contains the journals of a young woman, Nadezhda Andreyevna Durova, who presented as a man to pursue military ambitions. Her material was first published in 1836, well-after her 9 years of service that commenced in 1806. It was rare but not unprecedented for a woman to so serve. However, journaling her experience made Durova the first known woman in the Czar's army. There are considerable embellishments and falsehoods in Durova's work. Most notably, Durova represents that she ran away from her beloved father's home at about 15 to pursue her military career. However, Durova was likely around 22, and her adventures started after a brief marriage and having a son. The inaccuracies could be attributable to accommodating government censors, pleasing editors, or for a variety of personal reasons. It does appear that when Durova left home, she initially linked up with a Cossack regiment and later joined a series of calvary regiments, obtaining a position as a junior line officer. Durova has a contemporarily relevant ethnic background. She advertises being born of one of the most beautiful women in Ukraine, which had been something of a free state while under Cossack rule, but was dissolved in 1773-74 and dominated by Czars/Czarinas. Durova's maternal grandfather was a Ukrainian civil servant. At 16, her mother (also named Nadezhda) became enamored with a Muscovite Hussar who traveled to family's small town near Poltova, an Ukrainian city with historical import. Her Ukrainian grandfather forbade any such match, as would have been customary. Nevertheless, the two eloped and the young couple was able to pursue their own path as military life initially kept them on the move. Being around this lifestyle very much fascinated her.Durova was firstborn and describes herself as a monstrously ugly infant and the bane of her mother's existence. However, her father (Andrej Durov) is characterized as industrious, loving and kind. It appears Andrej was descended from a low level of Polish nobility. This would have allowed his male descendants to gain an officer position, which Durova, in her disguise, was able to merit. Durova sheds light on her escape from roles traditionally associated with females of the time, such as: wife, mother, tutor, mistress and hostess. She participated in some of the grand military events of the day and capably describes life in both war and peacetime. She is one of few authors to focus on the latter, the downtime which often makes up the bulk of a soldier's experience.
Welcome back to Syndicated Source Material! In this episode, host Jesse Starcher dives deep into the history of Image Comics with a re-airing of a classic conversation about Spawn #1. Originally released in April 2015, this discussion features special guest Benjamin J. Colon, a talented comic creator and artist, who shares his insights on Todd McFarlane's groundbreaking work. The episode kicks off with a fascinating interview with Benjamin, where he discusses his career, his ongoing Sketchbook Saturday project, and his passion for storytelling through his comic series Soul Exodus. Benjamin explains his journey into comics and his admiration for McFarlane, a creator who inspired him not once, but twice, to pursue his artistic dreams. The second half of the episode focuses on Spawn #1, exploring its massive impact as a cultural and industry phenomenon. With sales of over 1.7 million copies, the debut issue remains the highest-selling independent comic book of all time. Jesse and Benjamin discuss the comic's gritty narrative, McFarlane's artistic innovation, and how the formation of Image Comics reshaped the industry. They also reflect on the evolution of McFarlane's legacy and the ripple effects of Spawn in the comics world.
Miranda Rights, established by the Supreme Court in Miranda v. Arizona (1966), are constitutional safeguards that protect individuals from self-incrimination during custodial interrogation. These rights include the right to remain silent, the warning that anything said can be used against them in court, and the right to an attorney. The Miranda decision aimed to prevent coercive police practices and ensure that any waiver of rights is knowing, intelligent, and voluntary. Key case precedents have further shaped the understanding of Miranda Rights. Dickerson v. United States affirmed the constitutional basis of Miranda, while Berghuis v. Thompkins clarified that suspects must unambiguously invoke their rights. Custodial interrogation refers to questioning initiated by law enforcement after a person is taken into custody or deprived of their freedom. Miranda warnings are only required during custodial interrogation. A valid waiver of these rights must be knowing, intelligent, and voluntary. Exceptions to Miranda requirements exist, including the public safety exception and the impeachment exception. While supporters argue that Miranda Rights protect individual liberties and enhance fairness, critics contend that they impede effective policing. Empirical studies show mixed results on Miranda's impact. Overall, Miranda Rights and Custodial Interrogation are crucial aspects of Constitutional Law, representing the ongoing effort to balance individual liberties with effective law enforcement.

Syndicated Source Material #050 - Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash "Nightmare Warriors"Original Air Date - 10/26/2015In this special Halloween episode of the Source Material Podcast, Jesse Starcher is joined by Gavin Napier to revisit one of their most thrilling past discussions: Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: Nightmare Warriors, the explosive follow-up to their previous coverage of the Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash comic series. Just in time for spooky season, they dive deep into the second installment of this brutal crossover that brings together some of the most iconic horror figures in pop culture. The episode begins with some reflections on the difficulty of finding this rare six-issue miniseries. Gavin recounts how these comics are hard to come by and how the team scraped together their digital copies just in time for the recording. Once set, the duo launches into an in-depth discussion of the creative team, the series' art style, and the continuation of the bizarre lore that ties Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Ash Williams together. The story picks up with Jason Voorhees being extracted from the bottom of Crystal Lake by federal agents, while Ash tries to live a peaceful suburban life, grill spatula in... arm? However, peace doesn't last long as Jason's inevitable return drags Ash, along with a host of survivors from the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises, back into the fight against the relentless slasher villains. The pair discuss key elements of the plot, such as the role of the Necronomicon in controlling Jason, and how Freddy Krueger gets resurrected by a rogue government plot that goes horribly awry.Jesse and Gavin examine the expanded cast, including a slew of familiar faces from both horror franchises like Tommy Jarvis and Tina Shepard, and how the story taps into the backstories of these characters, creating an epic showdown of ultimate survivor vs. ultimate horror icons. The guys also break down the action-packed sequences where Freddy and Jason wreak havoc across Washington D.C., culminating in a massive battle with the U.S. military and the unleashed army of Deadites. As always, the episode is filled with fun commentary on the over-the-top action, the grisly deaths, and how the comic's art does its best to capture the sheer chaos of Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: Nightmare Warriors. This is a must-listen for fans of slasher horror, comic crossovers, and anyone looking for a bit of nostalgia mixed with some Halloween-season fun.
Send us a textI'm thrilled to share some incredible insights from our latest episode of the "Endless Possibilities Podcast." This time, I had the pleasure of diving deep into the realms of spiritual awakening and energy healing with the brilliant Dorothy Rowe. Here's a sneak peek into the profound lessons and ideas we explored together:Dorothy explains how our bodies act as vehicles for spiritual growth. **Discussion begins at 8:00**We've said it before, but as a reminder, 71% of earth space is comprised of ocean, yet 95% of it remains unexplored. Now, we are all familiar with unidentified flying objects, or UFOs. But, have you heard of unidentified submerged objects, or USOs? The first recorded USO sighting is from 329 BC, when Alexander the Great spotted a shiny shield like objects flying in and out of the river in India. He spent the next 6 years of his life hunting the object – and the hunt is what caused him to develop the first precursor to the submarine. Since then, there have been thousands of reports of USOs, but what are they? Could they be natural marine phenomena? Or are these advanced underwater vehicles developed by the United States or enemy governments? Are they underwater craft operated by extraterrestrial beings from other planets? And if they are being piloted by extraterrestrial beings, where are they going? Could there be advanced civilizations living beneath the Earth's Oceans, like the lost city of Atlantis? Wouldn't it make sense for a society to live underwater, if they had those biologic capabilities? And if so, could these civilizations know more about humans than we know about ourselves? Join us as we attempt to answer these and other questions.Source Material & Additional ContentSend us a Text Message.Support the Show.Theme song by INDA

**Discussion begins at 7:30**On August 4, 2009, a local news channel in Mexico aired footage of a tall, young woman. The clip showed Mexican model Gabriela Rico Jimenez in front of a luxury hotel making accusations toward young powerful people, including kidnapping, murder, and cannibalism. In the clip she is seen being escorted away by police officers, but she has not been seen or heard from since. Did the illuminati murder her and cover it up to protect themselves?Source Material & Additional ContentSend us a Text Message.Support the Show.Theme song by INDA
**Discussion begins at 6:08**The Illuminati was a Bavarian secret society founded in 1776, with close ties to the Freemasons. The society, founded by a law professor, sought to promote Enlightenment, and favored separation of church and state. The group was disbanded less than a decade after its formation by royal and church edict… But did it really disperse? Today, many conspiracy theorists claim that the Illuminati is a secret society that continues to exist and exert control over world events. They are often depicted as a small, powerful elite manipulating governments, economies, and media. Theories often associate the Illuminati with various symbols and claim their influence extends into popular culture, politics, and financial systems. If you believe these theories, then this elite group has planted agents in governments and corporations in order to influence and establish a New World Order. **Discussion begins at 3:57**Scientology is a controversial and highly secretive religious movement founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard in the 1950s. It emphasizes practices like auditing, a form of spiritual counseling, and the belief in an immortal spiritual being called a "thetan." The church is known for its strict hierarchical structure, aggressive litigation against critics, and insular community practices. Shelly Miscavige, the wife of current Scientology leader David Miscavige, vanished from public view around 2007, sparking widespread concern and speculation. Her disappearance has been particularly alarming to critics and former members of the church, who allege that the church's authoritarian control and penchant for secrecy may be factors in her prolonged absence. Despite inquiries and a missing person's report filed by ex-Scientologist Leah Remini, the church insists that Shelly is simply living a private life dedicated to her work within the organization, yet no verifiable sightings or communications from Shelly herself have emerged, fueling ongoing mystery and controversy. What really happened to Shelly? Source Material & Additional ContentSend us a Text Message.Support the Show.Theme song by INDA
**Discussion begins at 6:30**Have you ever seen a bunch of birds lined up on a power line? Or had a bird poop on your car? What if I told you that birds were really drones that the US government was using to spy on us? That those birds lined up on a power line were just recharging? That birds defecating were really a way for the Government to track them? Theorists claim that the federal government exterminated 12 billion birds between 1959-1971 and replaced them with drones. Another 4 billion have been exterminated since then. In fact, some theorists believe that JFKs assassination was actually a result of him refusing to kill the birds.Source Material & Additional ContentSend us a Text Message.Support the Show.Theme song by INDA
**Discussion begins at 5:30**Since 1916, Boeing has been synonymous with safety and reliability. The company was responsible for the production of 100,000 airplanes for allied forces in WW2, the production of Air Force One, and revolutionizing air travel. The slogan was, “If it's not Boeing, I'm not going”. Following a merger with McDonnell Douglas, experts agree that the company had a culture shift, in which perhaps finances were prioritized over safety. This all came to a head when Boeing did a rapid roll out of the 737 Max, in an attempt to keep up with their only competition, Airbus. Following a slew of poor decisions, there were two plane crashes, with 346 deaths. Since that time, a number of employees have come forward to report safety issues with Boeing and its contractor, Spirit Aerosystems. Things had been relatively quiet for Boeing, until this year when there have been a number of safety issues that have brought them back into the news. Following a 2.5 billion dollar loss, 50,000 lay offs, and a drop in stocks by 26% in the first quarter, two of the Boeing whistleblowers died under mysterious circumstances within 2 months of each other. Were these just unfortunate tragedies? Or was Boeing behind the mysterious deaths?Source Material & Additional ContentSend us a Text Message.Support the Show.Theme song by INDA

**Discussion begins at 8:15**Adolf Hitler was the dictator of Nazi Germany, rising as the leader of the Nazi party before becoming the head of state and government in 1934. During his dictatorship, he initiated the European theatre of World War II by invading Poland in 1939. He was closely involved in military operations throughout the war and was responsible for the creation of mobile death squads to perform mass executions on 6 million Jews, as well as Catholics, homosexuals, political dissidents, gypsies, and disabled people. In addition, 3,000 children, mostly twins were experimented on and eventually killed. Overall, he is thought to be responsible for the murder of 19.3 million civilians and POWs, with 28.7 million people dying as a result of military action – an unprecedented number. In April 1945, as the war was winding down, Hitler was hiding out in a bunker. Hitler married his longtime partner Eva Braun just after midnight on April 29, then several hours later he shot himself in the head. At the same time, his new wife Eva Braun and their dog, Blondi, each took a cyanide pill. Their bodies were doused in gasoline and set on fire per his request. Nothing remained of him except a portion of jaw bone and some teeth. We know Hitler had body doubles, could one of them be the charred body that was found? Did he and his new wife survive and flee to Argentina? Did he escape to a secret base in Antarctica? Or… is he living on the dark side of the moon?Source Material and Additional ContentSupport the Show.Theme song by INDA

**Discussion begins at 7:00**November 22, 1963: The President and Vice President are on a campaign tour through Texas in preparation for the 1964 re-election. Secret Service was told to back off so that the president seemed more “approachable”. While riding in a convertible with his wife, Jackie, Texas governor John Connally, and Connally's wife, Nellie, they departed Love Field. The route had been published in the newspaper, and so thousands of residents had gathered along the streets, as the motorcade proceeded through the streets of downtown Dallas. As it passed through Dealey Plaza at around 12:30 PM, shots rang out from the crowd. The number of shots and originating location are up for debate, but in the end, Governor Conally and President Kennedy were shot, with Kennedy being pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes later at nearby Parkland Hospital. Approximately 45 minutes later, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested. The 24 year old marine veteran, and employee at the Texas School Book Depository, was accused of shooting and killing police officer J.D. Tippit with a different gun, before hiding out in a movie theater. Within 2hrs of JFK's murder, Oswald was in police custody and accused of both murders. Unfortunately, he was shot while being escorted by police officers 48 hours later. The gunman of his murder was identified as Jack Ruby, a local club owner with mob connections. The following day, Kennedy is buried at Arlington National Cemetary. But was this all tied up a little too neatly? Does the evidence match the public story? Was JFK really assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald acting alone? Or is there more to the story that has been covered up?Source Material and Additional ContentSupport the showTheme song by INDA

**Discussion begins at 2:40**Harper Lee published To Kill A Mockingbird in 1960, which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize the following year, and sell more than 40 million copies worldwide. The coming of age story follows Scout and Jem Finch, as their father Atticus defends a falsely accused black man in 1930s Alabama. The book was reportedly inspired by Harper Lee's childhood memories from small town Monroeville, Alabama, where she lived next door to a young Truman Capote. They remained best friends for many years. However, following the publication of In Cold Blood in 1965, Lee and Capote's friendship began to disintegrate and Harper Lee became a bit of a recluse. Apparently, Harper Lee was still “seen around town in sweatpants looking for bargains at a Dollar General Store, washing her clothes at a local Laundromat, drinking coffee at a McDonald's”. Was it resentment that Capote did not acknowledge Lee's contributions to his work? Or was it that Capote had actually written Lee's one hit wonder and not received credit.
