Lt. Col. Tom Williams USMC (Ret.) - Doorsteps of Hell: The Arizona & Tropical Jungles 1969 -1970; The Heart of a Marine Series, Book 1. This is episode 721 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. On 20 December 1944, Tom Williams was born Tom Collins in Savannah, GA. Abandonment by his biological father at the age of six months old, profoundly impacted Tom's early life causing his mother to farm him out to relatives while she worked to make a living for them both. At the age of six years old, Tom's mother met and married U.S. Air Force Major Carl F. Williams Jr. This fortuitous marriage would bring about a radical change in Tom's life. As a military dependent, he immediately found himself traveling the world, living in foreign lands, learning about Ancient Roman history and archaeology, assimilating a basic conversance in the French, Arabic, and Japanese Languages, as well as being immersed in their respective cultures. After Tom's dad retired, his family moved to the Williams' ancestral homestead established in 1832, in Dooly County Georgia. Yet again, living, working, and learning to manage the family farm would have another major influence on Tom's future interests, especially regarding his love for the agrarian way of life. From 1964-68 Tom attended North Georgia College (NGC) acquiring a BA degree in history and a minor in psychology and political science. He then attended the Marine Corps' Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Quantico, Va., where he set the Marine Corps' record of 52 seconds for the Obstacle Courses and was the Platoon Honor Man. He then completed The Basic School (TBS) for all newly commissioned Marine Corps 2nd lieutenants, also at Quantico, graduating in the top 10% of his class. Before leaving Quantico, Tom then attended and graduated from High Intensity Language Training (HILT) for Vietnamese. As an infantry officer, Tom deployed as a 2nd lieutenant to Vietnam in 1969-70 where he commanded an infantry platoon in Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, followed by commanding a reconnaissance platoon as a 1st lieutenant in Alpha Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Subsequent to this combat tour, Tom commanded the Shore Party Platoon at the 1st Marine Brigade, followed by commanding the 81mm Mortar Platoon in 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station, Hawaii. Twenty-five months later, on two days' notice, Tom was redeployed back to Vietnam, as a captain, where he served as a school trained aerial observer. During this second combat deployment, Tom was imbedded with a Vietnamese O-1 Bird Dog squadron flying 183 combat missions from Hue Phu Bai Airfield, during the 1972 Easter Offensive. During his twenty-nine-year career, Tom participated in six amphibious deployments: four Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) and two Marine Expeditionary Brigades (MEBs). In 1976 as a school trained Communications Officer, he participated in the Non-Combat Evacuation Operation (NEO) of Beirut, Lebanon. In 1980-83, under secret orders, he was assigned as the regimental operations officer for developing the one-of-a-kind Mechanized Combined-Arms Task Force (MCATF), at Twenty-nine Palms, CA. In 1983-86, he was the Infantry Weapons Officer at Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC) Washington, DC, responsible for replacing or improving all Marine Corps infantry weapons. From 1986-90, he was the Amphibious Operations Officer for Commander Sixth Fleet's NATO staff, Commander Striking Forces South (CSFS) in Naples, Italy, responsible for coordinating all NATO amphibious training exercises throughout the Mediterranean Sea. That was followed by his participation in the First Gulf War, 1990-91, as a G3 operations officer with I MEF HQ. His last major active-duty assignment was as the G3 for the first Marine Component HQ to the European Command (EUCOM), in Stuttgart, Germany, 1993-96. After retiring in 1997, he spent eleven years as a contract mentor and trainer, six years in Saudi Arabia (1998-06) and five years in Afghanistan (2006-12). Currently, he lives an agrarian life on a 75-acre cattle property, Camelot, located on the Lamington Rain Forest Plateau in southeastern Queensland, Australia. He raises beef cattle, sells free-range eggs, and is a beekeeper, a gardener, and is developing his home into a Bed & Breakfast, while also writing a series of books, Heart of a Marine, in which he shares his Marine Corps experiences and his life's lessons learned. Our focus will be Col. Williams book series Heart of a Marine - Book 1 - Doorsteps of Hell: The Arizona & Tropical Jungles 1969-1970 Incredible book. Amazing conversation. So much to learn. Dr. Stephen Phillips interviews LtCol Tom Williams, USMC-Ret, to discuss his book Doorsteps of Hell, the first in his memoir series entitled Heart of a Marine. Doorsteps of Hell relays Tom's stories from childhood, life as a cadet a North Georgia College, becoming an Officer of Marines, and his service as an infantry officer in Vietnam. LtCol Williams' website is: https://www.heartofamarineseries.com/
As Tom Williams fought the enemy, every day, without fail, he would record the day's events in his diary. It is these diaries (which Tom has to this day), that enable him to tell the story of Vietnam in the late sixties/early seventies, like it really was. I talk with Tom about his book “Doorsteps of Hell” where he offers an honest, unembellished account of a new officer in the US Marines - fighting and surviving in the mud-sucking rice paddies and leech-infested jungles of Vietnam. In my conversation Tom brings to life the camaraderie, leadership, and the very essence of military expertise. Tom's book is available at heartofamarineseries.com . Lt-Colonel Tom Williams spent 29 years in active service with the USMC, worked for 11 years as a military advisor in the Middle East, with 6 years in Saudi Arabia and 5 years in Afghanistan. Even before his military service he traveled the world with his adoptive father US Air Force Major Carl Williams where he learnt French, Arabic, Japanese and later on Italian, Vietnamese and Dari, a real gift for language acquisition I must say. His first book part of his “Heart of a Marine” series came out this year, it is Doorsteps of Hell found here: https://www.amazon.com/Doorsteps-Hell-Advanced-Review-Marine/dp/0645866601 The first book focuses on Tom's early children, life as a Marine serving during the Vietnam war, sprinkled in with his military service throughout his life.

I talk with Pastor Jim tonight about Aliens, Demons, hollow earth and the book of Revelations. Jim is an Alumni of Central Bible College and was ordained by the independent Assemblies of God in 1980. Jim pioneered one of the first Christian Motorcycle Ministries which appeared on the 700 Club. Jim has held a lifetime interest in UFOs since he was a child in the 50's. Jim gave his first sermon on Genesis 6, linking it to an end time deception with UFOs and Aliens in 1978. In 1996 Jim was called into a full-time ministry presenting this Biblical perspective. Pastor Wilhelmsen began to help victims of the Alien Abduction phenomena. Traveling across America warning and investigating first hand led him to move to Roswell NM, where he had a bookstore/Museum. Currently Jim lives in Michigan where he now speaks and investigates internationally on this topic and continues to provide termination of the Abduction Experience. It's a dire message showing power outages and people resorting to eating their own pets. While to some it may seem silly, it is clearly in the playbook of the Great Reset and keep in mind, no matter how much of a puppet Zelensky is, Russia's top ally is China, the role model according to Klaus Schwab for the Great Reset. The Great Reset depends on power outages, supply chain breakdown, economic collapse and desperation to flourish. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The Province of British Columbia will be bringing fast reliable internet to remote communities like Cortes Island, Quadra Island and Zeballos by the fall of 2021. >>> Fast reliable internet “Fast reliable internet is more important than ever. In fact we couldn't be here today without it,” said Lisa Beare, BC's Minister of Citizens' Services. “Today I can tell you that the Connecting British Columbia program is approving more than $10.5 million in grants to improve internet speeds on BC's coasts. This means that people in places like Zeballos and Quadra Island and Bella Coola will soon see improved internet speed and reliability. People benefitting from these projects are members of several indigenous projects as well: the Haida, the Nuxalk, Ehattesaht and the Klahoose Nation.” >>> Strathcona Regional District More than $4 million of this money will go to the Strathcona Regional District. According to Cortes Island Regional Director Noba Anderson, “Internet connectivity at a regional scale has been one of the key priorities of the Regional District for a little shy of a decade.” The provincial government press release mentions three north Quadra Island Sites - Granite Bay, Bold Point and Open Bay, as well as he village of Zeballos. Anderson spoke about the three Cortes locations: Whaletown, Squirrel Cove and Mansons Landing. Telus has been looking at potential sites for communication towers, but a number of Cortes residents expressed their opposition to this kind of idea when Connected Coast came to Manson's Hall two years ago. They were concerned about electromagnetic waves emanating from wireless communication towers. “When the Regional District did outreach about our last mile priorities couple of years ago, it was really clear that people wanted fibre (cables) to their homes,” explained Anderson. “We will get fibre active cable that will connect into that subsea cable, run along the telephone poles and into people's homes. As far as I understand, we need to have this project completed by the Fall.” She made it clear that this is not a business case that Telus or any other internet provider would have used, it was only financially feasible possible because of government funding. “I really want to say thank-you to everybody who helped make the investment in coastal communities come to fruition. So many people in my constituency are looking forward to the Connected Coast project. It brings such great benefits to the North Vancouver Island, whether it be just connecting to government services (Tia health), distance education, emergency management BC, or to create those economic diversification portfolios for those small communities that are trying to transition through our new economy,” said North Island MLA Michele Babchuk, who was Chair of the Strathcona Regional District during the latter phase of negotiations. She added, “Struggling with those slow download speeds and unreliable connections has been (difficult) for people in the North Island.” Photo credit: Connected Coast
Source of income (SOI) discrimination is a practice by which landlords, owners, and real estate brokers refuse to rent to prospective tenants seeking to pay for housing with housing assistance vouchers, subsidies, or other forms of public assistance. Since Ohio is a home rule state, municipalities can pass laws to govern themselves, including the passage of SOI discrimination legislation that expands protections of the Fair Housing Act.In this episode of the Doorsteps podcast, OHFA's Kelan Craig and Dr. Cody Price are joined by Bexley's Mayor Ben Kessler and Council President Lori Ann Feibel to discuss how Bexley became the 6th community in Ohio and the first in central Ohio to pass a SOI protection ordinance and why this legislation matters. They discuss how SOI protections help support community efforts to build equity. To learn more about SOI protection ordinances please visit OHFA's website at SOI Discrimination.

Interesting conversation with Nicole Cox, who has been working to help promote awareness and support for Irish bees as part of her work at Siemens Ireland. Nicole also shared more information about how to find out more about bees and what can be done to help them. Here are the links for DC for Bees and the National BioDiversity Data Centre which have been particularly helpful. https://www.hostinireland.com/dc-s-for-bees https://pollinators.ie/resources/ To clarify two points – It is the red-tailed bumblebee which I am particularly fond of (I said red-bottomed by accident). Also rather than 10% of solitary bees, the number likely to use bee hotels/nest boxes is actually approximated to be 10 of the 77 native solitary bee species. As for Nature on our Doorsteps, copies were still available for sale at the Tallaght Library as of September and I've personally found it to be highly informative. https://www.echo.ie/show/article/nature-on-our-doorsteps-book-launch Nicole Cox is a volunteer beekeeper and DC (Data Centre) for Bees Ambassador on behalf of Siemens Ltd., Dublin. A smart meter data management consultant with Siemens Advanta since 2014, she has joined the Siemens Ltd. Sustainability group after moving to Dublin in June 2020. Sustainability is one of the key pillars of the overall Zero Harm Culture at Siemens Ltd. which seeks to grow initiatives such as personal wellbeing, health and safety, thinking green, and giving back to the community. As a partner with Host in Ireland, the overall goal of DC for Bees and Siemens' Sustainability group is to raise awareness of the importance of Irish pollinators and encourage changes to support the local ecosystem on a corporate and individual level. More about DCs for Bees Why Are We Doing This? As well as helping fight one of the greatest threats not only to bees but to the entire planet there are numerous benefits to coming together as an industry for this initiative: Snowball effect: Act as an exemplar for other industries to follow suit and make a real difference Community with a common purpose: Bring an industry together in a way that has never been done before Awareness: Reach a far wider audience than the Native Woodland Trust or the National Biodiversity Data Centre could do alone Meaningful Action: Help businesses to create and supplement a meaningful CSR programme Go global: This programme can act as a blueprint for our members' businesses to make an even bigger impact within their global offices Do the right thing right: People in the industry want to make a difference but it's not always clear how to go about it in a way that doesn't create unintended consequences. By working with the Native Woodland Trust and the National Biodiversity Data Centre we can do our very best to ensure the actions we take are the right ones and as impactful as possible.”

Welcome to my new PropTech Talk Thursday series to take a look and provide my candid thoughts on new Proptech businesses. These could range from products to companies leveraging technology to improve all facets of real estate. The Real Estate industry is one of the slowest to adopt technology but there are many opportunities along with money chasing these opportunities. Have you ever dealt with the hassle of renting out a property and wished there was a one stop shop to manage the entire process? Let me introduce you to Cozy. Founded in 2012 in Portland Oregon, Cozy has raised a total of $18.4M and was acquired by CoStar group in 2018 for $68M.They are an online property management service designed for landlords and renters to handle processes like rent payments, rental applications, tenant screening, and property advertising helping small and medium landlords and renters to facilitate both sides smoothly. So how does it work? For landlords, their platform allows you to list your property and collect applications all in one spot. The listings you post on Cozy.co are syndicated with Realtor.com and Doorsteps.com. Applicants are able to directly apply and purchase a background check and credit report through them for $40. When an agreement is reached, you are able to collect rent through their platform every month without any additional charges. Tenants can send payments for free with their checking accounts. They can also pay with a debit, credit, or prepaid card for a 2.75% transaction fee. You're able to manage the entire process all in one place. Now, they do face a lot of competition. I just recently leased a client's home as a landlord and just like marketing a home for sale, you want to get as much exposure as you possibly can. There are many options for consumers and landlords including Zillow, Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, Zumper, and/or the MLS. There is no centralized system like you will find for properties to buy and for sale. Summary: Nevertheless, Cozy is a great option to post and manage the process of finding the best tenant. You can always post in multiple platforms for a rental and then have the screening process through your favorite portal. Leave in the comments below if you have rented a property, and which site you used. Did you have a good experience? -- Want to talk about your real estate goals? Find a time on my calendar! Looking for a real estate agent in your city? I have a network of top producing agents around the country. Email me and I can put you in contact with an agent in your area. Spencer@SpencerHsu.com

Housing is connected to many aspects of everyday life. For many, housing is a large portion of their monthly budget. Where you live impacts your access to healthcare, transportation, quality of education, and more. Yet, in Ohio, there is a shortage of housing across the state, racial inequality in rentership and homeownership, and an aging housing stock. Those are just a few key trends found in this year’s Housing Needs Assessment (https://ohiohome.org/hna-20/executivesummary-hna.aspx) . In the latest episode of the Doorsteps podcast, Dr. Cody Price is joined by his colleague, Devin Keithley, OHFA’s Data Quality Assurance Coordinator. Devin shares housing trends and challenges, changes to the HNA and critical data, including the addition of a COVID-19 section.

We seem to be so caught up in the day-to-day of avoiding or dealing with the coronavirus, so it’s refreshing to know that some people are thinking of a future way beyond that. In this week’s podcast, Sue Williams revisits a story about an ambitious vision for a brand new city planned for the area near the new airport at Badgerys Creek. If the architects and planners have their way, it will be self-sustaining in energy and water and will even grow enough food to export to other areas. Is it a pipe dream? The architects have been building communities in the deserts of the Gulf states so they know a bit about making the most of a hostile environment. But, asks Jimmy, how does that stack up against the cheap, cheerless and quick-fix options favoured by our politicians? Owners unite ... by Zoom Also in this podcast, we talk to Karen Stiles, the energetic executive officer of the Owners Corporation Network about how that key organisation is coping with the challenge of building a community of communities when coronavirus is trying to keep us all at home. The answer lies in technology, she says, and to prove it, they had a very successful seminar on how to keep the short-term letting wolves from the door, which OCN members (exclusively) can now download from their website. It was also Karen who inspired the name of this week’s podcast – wolves and mung beans, but you’ll have to listen to discover how (and we don't mean the coyotes in California that Sue mentions). But seriously, over the past 18 years OCN has grown into a significant and well-respected organisation which has won itself a seat at the table when policy-makers are deciding the shape of our futures in strata. You’ll realise why when Karen outlines her vision for the future of this organisation. Forced out Then, Jimmy relates the alarming tale of a woman who discovered there were 10 apartments in her building that had been let, short term, to people self-isolating after having been found to be at risk from coronavirus. Health experts advised her to get out of the apartment block for her own safety’s sake. But it raises the question – who thinks the best way to isolate is to go into an apartment block where hundreds of people live (apart from the parasites and predators of the short-term letting industry)? And Sue’s “Hey Martha” is all about an old Temperance Hall, converted into luxury apartments … with a wine cellar. "The Cry from our Doorsteps" by The Rev. Dr. Joseph Novak on Palm Sunday, 2020
In the 1930s, redlining took over the American lending system: bankers picked lending-free areas (largely based on race) and drew virtual lines around neighborhood maps. Today, the practice is considered discriminatory because it predominantly impacted poor, black neighborhoods. Due to lack of investment, neighborhoods saw little economic growth, and in many cases, remain impoverished. This practice continued through the 1970s, until the Community Reinvestment Act (https://occ.gov/topics/consumers-and-communities/cra/index-cra.html) passed in 1977. Over the last four decades, the CRA has led to fair and equitable access to capital in disenfranchised areas throughout the country by encouraging banks to serve their local communities. Of the 25 largest banks in the U.S., annual community investment averaged $35 billion dollars. Since the inception of CRA, total investment is about $2 trillion dollars. In December 2019, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency proposed reforms (https://occ.gov/topics/consumers-and-communities/cra/summary-of-cra-proposed-rule.pdf) to the CRA in an attempt to modernize practices. These reforms have since been widely criticized for attempting to weaken the impact of the CRA. In this episode of the Doorsteps podcast, Dr. Cody Price talks with Nate Coffman, executive director of the Ohio CDC Association (https://www.ohiocdc.org/) , a non-profit trade association for community development corporations that work to revitalize rural and urban communities. Nate shares the history and impact of the CRA, a breakdown of the proposed reforms, and how to submit public comment (https://ncrc.org/treasureCRA/) by the April 8 deadline. For residents across the country, there is a direct connection between housing and transportation, and both have immense impact on how we live our lives. For most households, especially low-income, transportation is the second largest expense after housing. Limited transportation impacts access to good jobs, healthy food, doctor appointments, school and other resources important for success. Developers and community partners are in a position to close the gap between where people live and where they need to go. Properties like Aspen Place (https://ohiohome.org/ppd/featured/aspenplace.aspx) are a prime example of how developers can work with their communities’ transportation system to give residents access and help their communities thrive. In this episode of the Doorsteps podcast, Dr. Cody Price talks with Dr. Alison Goebel on transportation issues and solutions in Ohio. As Director of the Greater Ohio Policy Center (https://www.greaterohio.org/) , Dr. Goebel and her organization use research and policy for improving Ohio’s communities. Every community has one: the old, creepy, abandoned building. Maybe it’s a big mansion at the end of a dead-end road. Maybe it’s the old schoolhouse, with windows busted out and vines creeping up the crumbling brick walls. The real scary thing it isn’t their creaking floors or the wind whistling through the holes in the walls. It’s that these buildings, once staples of lively communities often lie in decay, waiting…until they’re demolished. With them, their unique architectural features and years of town memories, wiped away with a single wrecking ball. But these old buildings don’t have to be scary, or come to a chilling end. Through historic rehabilitation, these architectural gems with their antique and aged features can be preserved and brought to new life. OHFA properties like Nelsonville Commons (https://ohiohome.org/ppd/featured/nelsonvillecommons.aspx) and Lima Trust Building are historic preservation projects, once abandoned and decaying, now provide affordable housing for individuals and families, bring new life to the buildings and are staples of their communities once again. In our special Halloween episode of the Doorsteps podcast, OHFA’s Samantha Makoski and Dr. Cody Price are joined by Joe McCabe of Woda Cooper Companies (https://www.wodagroup.com/) . Joe shares some of the real treats and some nasty tricks of historical rehabilitation as well as some sweet federal (https://www.ohiohistory.org/preserve/state-historic-preservation-office/taxincentives/federal-tax-credit-landing-page-(1)) and state (https://development.ohio.gov/cs/cs_ohptc.htm) tax incentives that can make rehabilitation costs a little less scary. A safe, decent, and affordable home can help improve the economic mobility of a low-income resident. An equal parenting bill is moving forward in the Missouri Senate. It is known as SB14. A previous version of this bill passed the Missouri House of Representatives last year by a vote of 137-7. It was known as HB1667 at that time. Nobody knows for sure whether this bill will become law. But it seems to stand a good chance given how it passed the Missouri House of Representatives last year by a sweeing margin and now is being perfected for a vote in the Missouri Senate. It would also mark a big change in Missouri custody litigation because it would create a rebuttable presumption that fifty-fifty custody should be entered in every case in Missouri. To find out more, you can call us at 855-805-0595 or by reading about our custody lawyers online. This podcast is based on an article titled: Missouri Equal Parenting Bill (HB1667) on the Doorsteps.

Ohio is one of the states with the highest opioid related deaths, with over 3,600 deaths in 2016 (National Institute on Drug Abuse). While drug addiction certainly affects the health of the user, opioid abuse can also have harmful impacts on families and communities. Adequate and affordable housing plays a role in off-setting these impacts, by providing a safe and stable place to recover and heal for individuals, and at times, their families. In this episode of Doorsteps, Dr. Cody Price speaks with Jennifer Walters from Fairfield Homes, Inc., Andrea Boxill from the State of Ohio Governor's Opiate Action Team, and Maura Klein of Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services about recovery and affordable housing for people with opioid addiction and the stigma that surrounds it. Industry Relations EP007 Greg Fischer Takes Us Back to the Future with NYC Brokers vs. Zillow We’re feeling a little déjà vu at Industry Relations as controversy brews between Zillow and brokers in NYC. Everything old is new again with the launch of the premier agent feature on leading real estate marketplace StreetEasy. For the last ten years, agents across the country have dealt with syndication – and it seems New York real estate’s time has come. Today’s guest, Greg Fischer, serves as principal broker at Fred Real Estate Group in Bend, Oregon, and author of the blog Next in Housing. His unique background also includes work in the tech industry with real estate software companies Move, Inc. in San Francisco and Doorsteps in New York City. This makes him uniquely qualified to discuss the bruhaha as NYC brokers decide whether to pay the Zillow tax or boycott it. **Audio alert. Robertson's audio track has an echo effect that we couldn't get rid of in post. But Fischer and Rob audio (which handle the majority of the discussion) sounds great.*** What’s Discussed: How NYC brokers reacted to the premier agent feature on StreetEasy How StreetEasy GM Susan Daimler justified the change Home shoppers deserve the option to connect with agent who represents only them The explicit language used by the StreetEasy product to suggest a buyer agent Why NYC should seek the counsel of brokerages around the country who have dealt with syndication How Manhattan real estate does business differently Listing agents are used to owning all buyer leads REBNY’s request for an investigation into the legality of advertising an exclusive listing The potential to create an MLS in NYC Change in compensation model Dominance of top ten listing brokers Legal ramifications of only sharing data feed with REBNY The differences among IDX, VOW and StreetEasy’s premier agent The danger of dual agency Fischer’s take on leads generated via third-party websites Inquiries rarely lead to sales The evolution of Zillow’s playbook on generating revenue Why brokerages need to get savvy on how ad tech works The value of agents as local experts Compass CEO Robert Reffkin’s concession to Zillow Resources: Greg Fischer’s Premier Agent Blog Post The Real Deal’s Premier Agent Article The Real Deal’s Premier Agent Video Vendor Alley Job Board Connect with Greg Fischer: Blog Twitter
