Is patriotism worth the cost? In the volatile landscape of 1980s Britain, this question haunts every counter-terrorism operative.  Michael Gilbert's "The Killing of Michael Finnegan" draws you into a high-stakes game where loyalty is fleeting and deception is currency.  As seasoned agents Calder and Behrens race to thwart an IRA plot, they navigate a maze of half-truths and double-crosses. With each revelation, the line between ally and enemy blurs further. Gilbert's razor-sharp prose and intricate plotting keep you guessing until the final moment.  The clock is ticking, lives hang in the balance, and no one is above suspicion. There's a good chance we won't see much of Michael Gilbert in the MotoAmerica Championship in 2024 as he and his brother have taken over the running of the family business. That being said, he has leathers, a helmet and a Honda Fireblade at his disposal just in case. And there's also the fact that Laguna Seca Raceway is only a five-or six-hour drive north from Gilbert's Southern California home. In the meantime, Gilbert is going racing in the World Endurance Championship round at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps - the Spa 8-Hour - and he will do so with two of his best friends - Jason Pridmore and Andrew Lee. We spoke with Gilbert about all that and more on this week's episode of Off Track With Carruthers And Bice.Support the Show.

In recent decades, economic theory has made inroads into the study and practice of law, mainly in the domain of commercial transactions and corporate organization. But economics may also have a lot to say about how our governments are organized and how political actors engage in bargains and exchange.Professors Robert Cooter and Michael Gilbert are leading experts in the field of economics and law. Robert is the Herman F. Slevin Professor of Law at UC Berkeley and the co-author of the textbook, Law and Economics. Michael is the vice dean of University of Virginia's law school. He and Robert's new book, Public Law and Economics, explores the impact economic scholarship has on the study and practice of public law like the separation of government powers and elections.Robert, Michael, and Greg discuss why the disciplines of economics and law go hand in hand, how economics can inform the behavioral impact of legal rules, and how economic theories play out in a judicial context.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why law and economics has become so important in law schools02:40 First of all, much of economics is about incentives, that is to say, the reasons why people are motivated to do things. For example, if the price goes up, there's an incentive for people to buy less of the good. It turns out that the law can be regarded as an incentive system. For example, if the speed limit is increased from 55 to 65 miles an hour, that provides incentives for people to go ahead and drive faster. Furthermore, if the fine is increased from 100 to 150 dollars for exceeding the speed limit, that's an incentive for people not to exceed the speed limit. So, it turns out that many of the laws can be regarded as incentives to change people's behavior.  How economics can often be applied to humanistic practice of interpretation that lawyers are involved in52:58 My impression is that a lot of interpretation, especially in the hard cases where there's room to maneuver, it ends up being a function of people's intuitions. And sometimes, their intuitions are good, but sometimes they lead us astray. And economics isn't about a single person's intuitions; it's programmatic, it's general, it's built on a set of tools and assumptions that you can pinpoint. It isn't just myths in one person's mind. And I think that can be very helpful for interpretation.Understanding what efficiency means15:23 People equate efficiency with money and profit. And that's not what efficiency is, as any economist will tell you. Efficiency is about the satisfaction of people's preferences, and economists place nearly no limits or constraints on what the content of those preferences are.Is having more judiciary independence always better?43:51 You need independence in order to free the judges from outside influence and allow them to apply the law correctly and objectively, rather than taking bribes or deciding based on threats or whatever else. On the other hand, there's something a little perplexing about this. So, if you give them too much independence, you're empowering them to decide the law objectively, free from influence, and that's good. But you're also empowering them to do anything they want. Maybe they'll ignore the law. Maybe they'll read their own preferences under the law. Where's the constraint now? (44:36) The other thing I'll say about this is that almost every state elects judges in one capacity or another. And when I've talked to people, especially non-US citizens, they just across the board think this system is absolutely crazy because it just cuts too much into the independence of the courts. And maybe it does. And yet, I think most states are perceived to have the rule of law and have for decades and decades. So we're constantly navigating this trade-off.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Richard Posner Coase theoremGuest Profile:Robert Cooter's faculty profile at UC BerkeleyMichael Gilbert's faculty profile at University of VirginiaTheir Work:Public Law and EconomicsRobert's Work:Law and EconomicsSolomon's Knot: How Law Can End the Poverty of NationsThe strategic constitution

Farmers Business Network is one of the most well-funded startups in agtech. Just recently, they announced a $300M Series G round, bringing their total funds raised to $870M and their valuation to nearly $4 billion. So, where did it all begin? In this episode, FBN co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer, Charles Baron, explains how his Silicon Valley upbringing unexpectedly collided with rural Nebraska, resulting in an idea for a new kind of agribusiness- one that would connect farmers and increase their bargaining power for chemicals and seeds. In the eight years since the startup began, FBN has frequently encountered opposition from incumbents due to its push for competition and transparency for input pricing. In this episode, the last in our three-part series, Charles talks about several key factors in the company's success, including:Questioning Silicon Valley's ‘founder obsession' to instead create a ‘farmer-centric' ideologyThe importance of telling your company's story through your own channels (rather than relying on others). How FBN makes decisions about which strategies to pursue, including their Gradable platform and recently announced partnership with ADMThis is the third episode in our “Later-Stage Agtech Startup Lessons” series. “When you say, ‘can I have your money?' Then, people speak the truth.”Paul Lightfoot is a serial entrepreneur who has learned several lessons the hard way, from raising money to communicating purpose to hiring (and firing). After spending much of his career as a software CEO, Paul wanted to follow his “calling” to enter the world of sustainability and foodtech. But this meant moving from a familiar career trajectory to an industry that, 10 years ago when Paul was entering it, barely even existed. In 2011, Paul founded BrightFarms, which uses hydroponic greenhouses to produce locally sourced packaged salads in the US. Along the way, he has made several critical decisions for his startup's success. This includes an incredibly rare and difficult decision for any founder to make- Paul voluntarily stepped back from the role of CEO and hired someone he believed could do a better job. Now, BrightFarms has 300 employees, five greenhouses, and in 2021, it was acquired by Cox Enterprises. In this episode, Paul talks about:How to distinguish between what your ego is telling you and what's best for your company. How he raised capital in the early days, as well as more recent strategic partnerships to support the growth of BrightFarms. Why establishing core values and purpose is not simply human resources ‘fluff', but rather integral to success throughout every phase of a startup. For more information on this episode, visit our website. Last year, we talked with The Good Food Foundation about their annual honey contest (S3, E14). This year, we bring you four of the 15 finalists to talk about their entries and their beekeeping operation. Winners will be announced the week of the episode's release! Honey for the contest is entered and only compared to honeys from the region it is produced and it can be liquid, comb or infused. The honey must be entered by the beekeeper who produced it.  The judges look at how it was produced and harvested, overall animal husbandry, and is there any community engagement with bees, beekeeper and the people in their world. First up in the episode, we have Max Kirwin, the Good Food Awards leader, who oversees all 18 committees for this contest. Joining Max is Mark Carlson, the Honey Committee chair who will share what it is they are looking for in each honey submission category. Mark was with us back in August of 2020 in our first episode with the Good Food Foundation. We have 4 very different finalists this time. Jay Williams of Williams Honey Company and South Hall Farms, is working to build a destination luxury resort dedicated to sustainability, agricultural, culinary discovery and the circle of life. Of course, honey and pollinators play an important role to the theme. Ethan West, of Republic of Vermont Honey Company, they manage a treatment free apiary with bees spread out over 3 counties in the Champlain Valley of Vermont and the Green Mountains. Dustin Vanasse, along with Michael Gilbert of Bare Honey, produces honey in solar panel yards all over California. Dusty has learned the tricks of Solar Based Beekeeping, utilizing the acreages and space around these large installations to produce infused honey, using organic and local peppers for his flavoring. Before they left, we asked each of these finalists give tips on how to get ready for next year's competition. A whole lot of good advice in this final segment. Think you have good honey? Let's talk about Flotsam and Jetsam's 13th full length studio album from AFM Records, The End of Chaos. This 12 track assault from the current metal quintet is comprised of: Eric “AK” Knutson – vocals; Michael Gilbert – guitars; Steve Conley- guitars; Michael Spencer – bass; Ken Mary – drums. I review with my feelings which I often get ridiculed for, but like I give a shit. I'll feel what I want to feel and if you don't like it stick around those feelings will change. Your well thoughtout gems of intricate wisdom; fads or fickle; puhtato, potato… The 80s metal man in me feels 3 things about this album right off the bat… 1. This album fucking rocks! Its headbanging from start to finish. I don't detect a lot of pussy ballad music on it, which means the bullshit is left behind. The closest the album comes to a “power ballad” is their haunting rendition set upon the altar of the metal gods of personal pain, “Recover”. A serious misnomer, this song hits you in the good parts about an injury to the heart and mind so deep we may never recover…all done at about 120 beats a minute! (Hell yeah - take that Nightwish!) 2. Friends, if I heard this album in the 1983, when real metal was played and not artistically not artistically emoted swill (pause and vomit), I would have considered it, quote ”experimental”. Songs such as “Prepare For Chaos“, “Good Or Bad“, and my personal favorite “Demolition Man” were played so immensely and intensely that I'm sure “rajasthani folk musical instruments” all over the world were blowing up like a Samsung Smartphone roasting the ears of whoever had it next to their head. 3. The 3rd thing I noticed on this album is that the lyrics on this album are badass. They are dark and deep: addressing pain, heartache, insanity, disaster, despair, fantastical realms and general dark-heartedness. The point is, Flotsam and Jetsam on The End Of Chaos addresses the issues all good metalheads deal with in life. And yet, none of that mattered. The kick-ass lyrics are secondary to the kick-ass music that caused me to bang my head from start to finish. I experienced metal on a primal, neck traumatizing level, and this album meets all the criteria for such an album. One thing that surprisingly stood out on The End of Chaos, were the vocals of AK Nut-buster. (OK, if that's not his name, it oughta be!) Regardless of his name, dude can fucking wail. I kept thinking he sounds like some vocalist I love, which can be a very complimentary thing. He has a style you can't pin him down to, a rare thing in the industry. At times it sounded a little like Dio, at times Jeff Tate, and at other times it was a little like Dickenson. AK Knutout and the boys from Flotsam and Jetsam can kick ass. Gilbert and Conley grasp the concept of highly distorted, focused, bellicosic need that lies with true metal. Then, while Knutson and the guitar boys provide the spice of this meaty dish, Spencer and Mary lay down a basic rue of hard driving, hardwired metal that keeps The End Of Chaos righted on the perilous sea of Metal! If I'm pressed, the biggest recommendation I could find for The End Of Chaos is to encourage Flotsam and Jetsam to add some diversity to their general tone. They've mastered the “art” of Heavy Metal and it shows in every song, at times giving them an air of similitude in many of their songs. Don't be afraid to dumb it down; trust in the simplicity of the music and the brotherhood of the musicians and the audience. Branch out and branch down. Then lets swing on the vines as we headbang into unconsciousness. In conclusion, Flotsam and Jetsam's The End Of Chaos is a grab-you-by-the-balls and come along with them wherever they're going to take you endeavor. It's a gravel gargling, high distortion, speed…no thrash, metal riff and solos album, backed by an incredibly heart-pounding bass and drum hardline. I highly recommend Flotsam and Jetsam‘s The End Of Chaos through AFM Records with a rating of 8.5/10.
