John Vervaeke and Sebastian Morello engage in an expansive dialogue that traverses the authority crisis in the Catholic Church, the enduring wisdom of Neoplatonism, and the transformative power of Hermetic practices. Anchored in Morello's provocative new book, Mysticism, Magic and Monasteries, the conversation unpacks the “double crisis” of our time- one of meaning and one of sanctity, and argues that modernity functions like a spell that must be broken. Together, they examine how monasticism once offered a stable and embodied sanctity, and why recovering mysticism, ritual magic (in the Hermetic sense), and lived devotion might be essential for collective reawakening.  Notes:  (0:00) Welcome to The Lectern (0:30) John reconnects with Sebastian Morello  (3:00) Sebastian Gives a Brief Introduction of Himself (6:00) Diagnosing the Double Crisis - Meaning and Authority (9:00) Critique of Modernity and the Catholic Church (12:00) The Loss of Embodied Wisdom in the West (20:00) Neoplatonism and the Need for Relational Ontology (26:30) Philosophical Anthropology and Cosmic Personhood (31:00) Modernity's Ontological Truncation (38:30) Sacred Authority and the Failures of Clericalism (42:00) Monasteries as Alternatives to Institutional Collapse (49:00) Christian Liturgy as Baptized Theurgy (54:00) Hermetic Cognition - Practicing the Theocentric Vision (1:00:00) Recovering Sacred Imagery - Tarot, Ritual, and Mystical Space (1:04:00) Digital Gnosticism and the Threat to Embodiment (1:07:00) The Future of Privacy - Personhood, Property, and Charity (1:11:00) The Philosophical Silk Road - East-West Interpenetration

In this episode Nat takes you on a journey, exploring the history of witchcraft in Bedfordshire from medieval times up until the late 18th century. Kicking off with a ghost story about a witch.  This episode moves from what is possibly Bedfordshire's earliest record of witchcraft, to the witch trials of the 17th century and beyond. It seems even when persecuting witches was outlawed in 1735, the people of Bedfordshire persisted in attempting to punish those who they thought dabbled in magical harm. Part Two which is available now, which follows up from the 19th century to modern day. In this episode Dr Francis Young, provides his insight into 16th century religious and political matters. Tess Savigear voices an account of the "Dunstable witch," Elizabeth Pratt. Owen Staton voices an account of the "witch of Oakley." Matt Savigear voices the curious case of a husband and wife accused of witchcraft in Silsoe.  You can read more about the witches of Bedfordshire on the blog at weirdinthewade.blog Follow the podcast on social media via linktree Support the podcast on Ko-Fi or Patreon.  Weird in the Wade is researched, written, presented and produced by Nat Doig Theme music and the tracks, Waking Up and The Ladies Sutton are by Tess Savigear Oboe on The Ladies Sutton is played by Charlotte Pascoe  All additional music and sound effects by Epidemic Sound.

In this episode Nat completes her exploration of witchcraft in Bedfordshire starting with a 19th Century ghost sighting of a witch. The episode covers a case of Victorian girls playing at witches to horrific and cruel effect. Then moves through the 20th Century with it's contrast between the rise of wicca and nature based neo pagan witchcraft, and the persistent fear of "black magic" and the satanic panic. Nat ponders whether we have moved far enough away from the causes and motivations of the 17th century witch trials. But ends the episode with a delightful piece of witch related folklore. This episode contains some descriptions of cruelty to animals but Nat gives you a heads up before those sections.  You can read more about the witches of Bedfordshire on the blog at weirdinthewade.blog Follow the podcast on social media via linktree Support the podcast on Ko-Fi or Patreon.  Weird in the Wade is researched, written, presented and produced by Nat Doig Theme music and the track Waking Up are by Tess Savigear All additional music and sound effects by Epidemic Sound.

On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined by local historian David Longman, whose work chronicling Bedfordshire's 149 churches has thrown up some fascinating and very funny stories! Before embarking on this particular project, David had spent 39 years working as a teacher and headteacher in middle schools in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Northamptonshire. Outside of his life in education, where his classroom specialism was history, David was ever a keen amateur photographer, and, after travelling the world photographing the last working steam locomotives, he drew his camera's focus closer to home.David began photographing Bedfordshire's parish churches in 2017, and as he did he started to notice certain architectural features and to collect associated legends. Soon, in addition to gathering stories from across the county, he found himself giving regular talks to community groups and organisations about it all, which he continues to do to this day. So, from castrated monks whose testicles regrew thanks to God, profoundly scandalous rectors, tales of ghosts, the Devil, and the so-called 'Keysoe Miracle,' David has some wonderful stories to tell - while also sharing an insider's view of Bedfordshire, which he rightly calls a "Secret County."We really hope you enjoy the conversation, and otherwise will be back on Monday with our brand new County Episode, in which we will be galloping through the history and folklore of Gloucestershire!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On the first episode of Three Ravens Series 6, we are making a right old fuss about an often overlooked county when it comes to folklore - Bedfordshire, the county of John Bunyan, little blue spacemen, and mysterious Medieval serial killers... We start off chatting about both St Winwaloe's Day, which is surprisingly saucy actually, and all the madness of Shrove Monday, after which we bustle across to Bedfordshire! After chatting through some amazing aspects of Bedfordshire's history, as represented by three pretty jaw-dropping historical finds, including the Dunstable Swan Jewel, a magical Viking sword, and a bunch of long-hidden skeletons, Martin then sits us down for Afternoon Tea, revisits the topic of Clangers, and introduces us to Chocolate Toothpaste, all of which are contenders for Bedfordshire's County Dish! After that, we get stuck into some folklore, including the spooky afterlife of the airmen who died in the R101 airship disaster, the now-leveled ancient henge arena and worship ground where the Celtic god Lugh drank the wellsprings of revelation, and discuss Bedfordshire's plethora of Shucks - all supplemented by some excerpts from next Saturday's Local Legends interview with local historian David Longman, who has a very naughty rector he wants to warn you about...Then it's on to the main event: Martin's story "The Devil's Fingermarks" which combines the Dark Lord himself with horse-stealing Georgians, Horace Walpole, William Beckford, and a rather haunted gothic castle! We really hope you enjoy it, will be back on Thursday with a new Magic and Medicines bonus episode about Ley Lines (and for the Three Ravens Second Birthday Livestream on YouTube!) all before the full interview with David comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. There's a wood between the Bedfordshire town of Potton and the ancient hamlet of Sutton, which has spooked many locals including Nat. The creepiness seems to coalesce around an ancient bridge along an equally venerable footpath which has possibly been in use for over 1000 years.  After Nat encountered this strange part of the woods nearly three years ago, she's been trying to piece together it's history and to find a cause of the unsettling feelings walkers have described. Why do few birds sing in that part of the woods? Was the path used as a route to an execution site? Is a big cat sighting from the 1990s somehow involved? Nat uncovers Victorian fake news along the way and a torrid tale of polluted waterways and sewage dumps, but does she discover the truth?
