General Witchfinders

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2023 110:01

Quatermass and the Pit (or as it's known in the US ‘Five Million Years to Earth') is a 1967 British science fiction horror film from Hammer Film Productions, a sequel to the earlier Hammer films The Quatermass Xperiment and Quatermass 2 (see General Witchfinders episode 17 for more details). Like its predecessors it is based on a BBC Television serial, of the same name, written by Podcast hero Nigel Kneale. It was directed by Roy Ward Baker (who is responsible for such highs as A Night to Remember And such lows and The scars of Dracula and The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires - see episodes 28 and 31 respectively)  And this incarnation stars Andrew Keir (featured in Cleopatra, Dracula: Prince of Darkness and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.)  in the title role as Professor Bernard Quatermass, replacing Brian Donlevy, who played the role in the two earlier films. James Donald, Barbara Shelley (also in Dracula: Prince of Darkness and The Gorgon) and Julian Glover (whos been in some little known films called Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Empire strikes back, Games of thrones, several Doctor Who stories and load of other stuff including being the voice of a giant spider in Harry Potter) they appear in co-starring roles.Nigel Kneale wrote the first draft of the screenplay in 1961, but difficulties in attracting interest from American co-financiers meant the film did not go into production until 1967. The director, Roy Ward Baker, was chosen because of his experience with technically demanding productions such as A Night to Remember; this was the first of six films that he directed for Hammer. Andrew Keir, playing Quatermass, found making the film an unhappy experience, believing Baker had wanted Kenneth More to play the role. Owing to a lack of space, the film was shot at the MGM-British Studios in Elstree, Borehamwood, rather than Hammer's usual home at the time, which was the Associated British Studios, also in Elstree. The plot of the film verison was condensed to fit the shorter running time, the main casualty being the removal of a subplot involving a journalist named James Fullalove, and the climax was altered slightly to make it more cinematic. The setting for the pit was changed from a building site to the London Underground. The closing scene of the television version, in which Quatermass pleads with humanity to prevent Earth becoming the "second dead planet", was also dropped, in favour of a shot of Quatermass and Judd sitting alone amid the devastation wrought by the Martian spacecraft. The script was sent to John Trevelyan of the British Board of Film Censors in December 1966. Trevelyan replied that the film would require an X certificate and complained about the sound of the vibrations from the alien ship, the scenes of the Martian massacre, scenes of destruction and panic as the Martian influence takes hold and the image of the Devil. It has been suggested that Tobe Hooper's 1985 Lifeforce is largely a remake of Hammer's Quatermass and the Pit. In an interview, director Tobe Hooper discussed how Cannon Films gave him $25 million, free rein, and Colin Wilson's book The Space Vampires. Hooper then shares how giddy he was: "I thought I'd go back to my roots and make a 70mm Hammer film.Three decades on, Andrew Keir reprised the role of the Professor in "The Quatermass Memoirs", a five-part docudrama scripted by Nigel Kneale and transmitted on BBC Radio 3 in March 1996. Extra time, cup upsets and goals galore - the FA Cup third round didn't disappoint. Ben Haines is joined by former Hull City and Ipswich Town defender Alex Bruce and ex-Everton and Birmingham City forward James McFadden to look back on a day that summed up 'the magic of the FA Cup'. League One Cambridge United went to St James' Park and stunned Newcastle United. Hear from their manager Mark Bonner and a very shocked fan who made the journey. Meanwhile, we ask if the exit could be a blessing in disguise for Newcastle later in the season, as Eddie Howe's men fight to stay in the Premier League. The lowest team left in the competition - Kidderminster Harriers - who play in the sixth tier of English football, caused an upset of their own beating Championship side Reading. Assistant manager Jimmy O'Connor pulls over on his way home to join the pod and we hear from their speechless manager Russ Penn. Plus Borehamwood's Adrian Clifton tells us who he fancies in the fourth round, after his winner ensured the National League side knocked out League One AFC Wimbledon. Also, after a scare for Everton, did their win over Hull City do anything to ease the pressure on Rafa Benitez? And as VAR made headlines in games featuring Premier League sides, the panel debate if it is fair to use the technology in some ties and not others. Should it be scrapped from the competition? In this special episode I'm joined by Bristol Rover's James Belshaw (The Manager), Borehamwood's Nathan Ashmore (The Bouncer) and Chesterfield's Scott loach (The man with the merchandise) to discuss all things mindset and goalkeeping. We recorded this episode last season during lockdown and I've been excited to put it out ever since. These three are some of the biggest goalkeeping personalities I've had the pleasure of meeting and who knows, maybe one day well be part of Belly's backroom staff. We discuss: What mindset means and why it is different for each individual The biggest lessons they've learned throughout their careers and how their styles have adapted over time and through experience Belshaw Vs Mr Blobby – the story behind the Harrogate Town Vs Borehamwood play-off semi-final The research, analysis and psychology behind penalties The intricacies of contracts, life on furlough and the unseen parts of a professional goalkeeper The goalkeeper's union, number 2's and navigating one of football's most awkward relationships The difference between training ground goalkeepers and the day-to-day pro's Short sleeves Vs Long sleeves? Why goalkeeping is a specialist position which requires knowledge to asses performance Social media, pundits opinions and why blocking out the noise is the most important thing when maintaining a bulletproof mindset When technique goes out the window and keeping the ball out the net is all that matters Adapting coaching styles to suit the goalkeepers you work with Belly's plans for the future and why we would make the best backroom staff (yes including me!) This episode has something for everyone and brings so much value to the podcast in my opinion. We cover serious topics like growth mindset, performance and analysis, and there's also lots of fun content on topics which every goalkeeper in the union can relate to. Consider this episode a thank you for all your support and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when recording. Welcome to the 46th CONKERS’ CORNER recorded on 18th May 2017. In this interview, I have the pleasure of speaking with part-time private investor and blogger @sholdsworth1963 Steve Holdsworth. Steve was born in Bushey, Hertfordshire, and lived in Borehamwood until he was four, after which the family moved to Perivale, West London. His father was a self- employed carpenter and his mother mixed bringing up two children with various secretarial jobs and had a pretty ordinary upbringing. Steve attended Northolt High School a pretty ordinary large comprehensive. Whilst bright and in all the top streams for most subjects, Steve by his own admission “lacked the kind of drive to excel in anything in particular.” He left school at the age of 16 years age with a handful of O levels as he “didn’t do much work”. On leaving school Steve, found employment as a junior at Barclays Bank, his role was mainly administrative initially but later took on other roles in the Bank, including that of a Bank teller. However after around five years Steve found Banking was not for him. He then took a job as a salesman for the electronics retailer Tandy, but by his own admission he was not a great salesman. In the late 1990’s whilst Steve was working with a large market research company called Taylor Nelson AGB, he gained his first interest in stocks and shares from some of the colleagues he worked with. However it was also at that time when Steve had got himself into a lot of consumer debt. With a determination to clear his debts, Steve stumbled upon the Motley Fool boards for consumer debt. Via these boards Steve found the Motley Fool investor forums and boards. He describes Motley Fool as a wonderful forum of individuals freely sharing their knowledge and experience. He added that he attended their monthly socials in London and found them “great for his learning”. Steve admits that he was a bit impatient and actually started investing before he had cleared his debts. The first stock that he bought was Lloyds TSB in 2005, because it was a big blue chip, high yielding stock. He admits that he made ad hoc purchases and bought and sold shares as they took his fancy. He admits that when he first started out he would not look beyond the tips he found via Motley Fool boards and the Financial Times with very little research. However later he found Digital Look and Hemscott (Morningstar) for screening stocks. Having worked in a series of jobs across many sectors, more recently Steve has worked as a Charity Fundraiser. Starting in June 2017, Steve intends to embark on a phase that will encompass him being a full-time active investor. This ties in seamlessly with the personal blog that Steve has just recently started, which he has called GoStevie’s website http://gostevieblog.weebly.com/ . Steve has had several investment successes and some made some notable mistakes during the past twelve years or so. This discussion provides an insight into the journey that Steve has taken, which so far has encompassed Banking, Retail, Market Research, Administration, Charity Fundraising, and much much more. The topics we discussed include: -Stocks; -Clearing debt; -Keeping records/logs -Value investing; -Attending Shareholder seminars; -Investor events; -Motley Fool; -ShareSoc; -Learning; -Winning investments, -Mistakes -Don’t become too overweight in one stock; -Position size; -IPO’s; -Attending AGMs; -Timing markets; -Public speaking; -Moral compass; -Clients first; -Mindset; -Lessons learnt; -Becoming a full-time investor; Listen now to gain insights into how Steve invests and learn from the lessons in his successful and insightful investing journey.

The Crown is a biographical drama television series, created and written by Peter Morgan and produced by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television for Netflix. The show is a biographical story about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. The first season covers the period from her marriage to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1947 to the disintegration of her sister Princess Margaret's engagement to Peter Townsend in 1955. The Crown evolved out of Morgan's 2006 film The Queen and 2013 stage play The Audience. The series is intended to last 60 episodes over six seasons, with 10 one-hour episodes per season, covering the Queen's entire life, and with new actors being cast every two seasons. Claire Foy portrays the Queen in the first two seasons, alongside Matt Smith as Prince Philip and Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret. Filming for the series takes place at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, with location shooting at various locations throughout the United Kingdom. The entire first season was released on Netflix on November 4, 2016, while the second was released on December 8, 2017. The Crown has received widespread acclaim, with critics praising the cast's performances, direction, writing, cinematography, production values, and the relatively accurate historical accounts of Queen Elizabeth's reign. Significant praise in the first season was directed towards the performances of Foy in the leading role and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill. The series has received several industry nominations and awards, including winning Best Actress and Best Actor at the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards for Foy and Lithgow, respectively, and receiving thirteen nominations for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series.
