The John Gioffre Memorial Golf Classic, held in 2024 at the prestigious Westchester Hills Country Club in White Plains, was a poignant and meaningful event, going far beyond just a day of golf. This annual gathering serves as a tribute to John Gioffre, a man who profoundly impacted the lives of those around him. Despite his passing over 25 years ago, John's legacy continues to thrive, particularly through the John Gioffre Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded annually to deserving scholar-athletes at Port Chester High School (PCHS), where John's influence remains deeply felt. The scholarship was established shortly after John's death to honor his dedication to education and athletics, and it helps young students pursue their goals. John's legacy is cherished not just by his immediate family—his sons John Jr. and Zaccary, his daughter-in-law Melissa, his granddaughters Jane and Daria, and daughter-in-law Kat—but by the entire Port Chester community, where he made a lasting impact. The golf tournament has become a critical fundraiser for this scholarship, providing much-needed support to the next generation of student-athletes at PCHS. In addition, the proceeds from the tournament also go toward supporting local causes that John was passionate about, ensuring that his values of giving back and community engagement continue to shape the area. During the event, Westchester Talk Radio's Jim Feldman had the honor of speaking with Dwight "Doc" Gooden, former NY Mets pitcher, about the importance of community, philanthropy, and supporting the next generation of leaders. Gooden, who has seen his own journey from the baseball field to giving back to others, shared his thoughts on the meaningful impact of the John Gioffre Memorial Golf Classic and the role it plays in continuing John's legacy.
The John Gioffre Memorial Golf Classic held in 2024 at the prestigious Westchester Hills Country Club in White Plains was more than just a golf tournament. It was a heartfelt tribute to a man who touched countless lives and made an indelible impact during his time on this earth. Even though it has been over 25 years since his passing, John Gioffre's legacy continues to thrive, especially through the John Gioffre Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship, established shortly after his passing, is awarded each year to young scholar-athletes at Port Chester High School (PCHS)—a place where John once had a significant presence. John's memory is not only cherished by his family—his two sons John Jr. and Zaccary, his daughter-in-law Melissa, his granddaughters Jane and Daria, and daughter-in-law Kat—but by the entire community he helped build. The annual golf tournament is a key fundraiser to support the scholarship fund, providing financial assistance to deserving students at PCHS. The proceeds also benefit local causes that John would have been proud to support, ensuring his spirit of giving and community continues. Westchester Talk Radio's Jim Feldman caught up with Sal Mandreucci, known as TikTok's SallySlices, the owner of Marcello's Pizza Grill in Hamilton Square, who shared his thoughts on the event.

The Bloody Benders were a family of serial killers active in Labette County, Kansas, from 1871 to 1873. Consisting of John Bender Sr., his wife Elvira (or Almira), their son John Jr., and daughter Kate, they operated a small inn and general store on the Osage Trail, which was frequented by travelers. The family would invite guests to sit at a table with their backs against a curtain, where they would be struck from behind with a hammer, usually by John Sr. or John Jr., while distracted by Kate, who was known for her beauty and purported spiritualist abilities. After the murder, the victims' throats were slit, and their bodies were buried in an orchard or thrown into a well on the property. The Benders are believed to have killed between 11 to 20 people, with the actual number uncertain due to the frontier's sparse record-keeping. The family's crimes came to light after the disappearance of Dr. William York in 1873, whose brother, a prominent state senator, organized a search. When authorities arrived at the Bender homestead, the family had already vanished. The property was searched, revealing several bodies, confirming the grim suspicions. The Benders' fate remains a mystery; stories range from them being lynched by vigilantes, escaping to other parts of the country or even abroad, or changing identities. Their story has since become a legendary tale in American folklore. Sources: Nadel, D. (2024, July 19). The bloody benders: the family that wasn't. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Sheila Athens, author of the book Neena Lee is Seeing Things. Sheila writes smart contemporary women's fiction set where the South meets the Sunshine state. Her stories are about women seeking to find the peace we all deserve. Readers are drawn to her work because they believe that everyday heroes can make a difference in our world. She loves quiet spaces, eccentric people and the little band of writer hikers who walk at sunrise on a regular basis. After growing up in the Ozarks, she moved to Florida—sight unseen—with the man who would become her husband. She's a boy mom, a former vice president of human resources, and an avid audiobook listener. To sign up for her newsletter or to schedule a book club visit (either in-person or virtual), go to SheilaAthens.com. In my book review, I stated Neena Lee is Seeing Things is a contemporary southern fiction looking back at the marriage of John F Kennedy to Carolyn in 1996 and their death in a plane crash in 1999 through the eyes of a journalist, Neena Lee. Neena has suffered loss and holds herself responsible. Her latest lost left her hospitalized in a mental health facility and without a job. She needs to write this article about John Jr to prove her abilities and save herself financially. However, when she 'sees' John Jr standing in the church, she is sure that her mental illness has taken a turn for the worse. I enjoyed how Sheila connects those visiting the island today with issues Neena and/or John himself need to face. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Today on the first part of a two part episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are speaking to Radames Pera whose name you might know as well as that of his mother actor Lisa Pera. Because this episode is so jam packed – and we honestly didn't even get to half of the stuff we wanted to talk about- so we split this episode into two parts. On this episode, we discuss Radames' being a child actor in not one but two of the 70s most beloved television series. He is best known as young Caine or Grasshopper, if you like, in the series Kung Fu, a show that not only launched the martial arts craze but also a film that launched a global phenomenon that still resonates to this day. Radames also starred in Little House on the Prairie in a recurring role as John Jr. Lisa Pera on the other hand, got her start in film and television as well, beginning in 1965 on the show Combat! in an episode directed by Vic Morrow. From there, she starred in films like The Hindenburg as well as shows like Perry Mason, Get Smart Man from Atlantis and even Hawaii 5-0 where she starred with Radames as his mother. Novel casting, that. Radames pulls no punches (no pun intended) on this episode as we explore his life being raised by a mother too young and emotionally unequipped to deal with raising a child after a horrific childhood of her own. Being a Ukrainian -Russian finding herself in Nazi Germany and eventually the United States after WWII is jaw dropping stuff that doesn't seem real. Suffices to say, this Part one is a ‘buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride' episode. But it's frankly just a palette cleanser for episode #2, coming next week. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
It's finally here! The first episode of our True and Constant Podcast with hosts, Lex Stewart (Ohio) and Emma Oremus (St. Louis). She joined 1,100 men in the elite agency where she shot holes in the glass ceiling, investigating counterfeit, working undercover and protecting the president and world leaders. Fondly called the “Pistol Packin' Nanny,” Kathryn was charged with protecting the Kennedy children – Caroline and John Jr. – while traveling the globe with Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Emma and Lex dive deeper into Kathryn's history and her current life as a public speaker and author. Plus, they find out what it really means to live up to her mantra— “Do it scared!”— in the newest episode of our True and Constant Podcast.

On the morning of Thursday, November 21st, 1963 President Kennedy had breakfast with his children. He said goodbye to his daughter Caroline when she left for school at 9:15. President Kennedy arrived at his office for the last time at 9:55. The President left the White House for the last time at 10:50AM. He flew to Andrews Air Force Base where he and the First Lady departed for San Antonio Texas. John Jr accompanied them to the airport. Once in Texas, he was at the dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center, Brooks Air Force Base. He then went to Houston. There he made brief remarks to the League of United Latin American Citizens at the Rice Hotel. He then addressed a dinner in honor of Representative Albert Thomas. Some of that speech was just heard. The President and First Lady then traveled to Fort Worth where they stayed at the Texas Hotel. He had speeches set for Fort Worth and Dallas the next day. In world news, Robert Stroud, “the birdman of Alcatraz” died while incarcerated in Springfield, Missouri. In Japan's general election, the Liberal Democratic Party retained a majority in the Shugiin (SHOO GEEN), or House of Representatives. While India began its space program with the launching of a rocket at the far south end of the Indian subcontinent. And by the time the President went to sleep, it was the 22nd in the UK. That day, The Beatles released their second studio album, With The Beatles. Produced by George Martin, it featured eight original compositions and six covers. The famous black and white portrait on the cover, with Ringo underneath John, George, and Paul, was widely copied afterwards.
On Saturday November 9th, fans rioted at Roosevelt Field Raceway in Long Island, battling police and setting fires. At least fifteen were hurt and the head of security died of a heart attack during the riot. Sunday November 10th was the evening before Veteran's Day. On NBC, Frank McGee signed on for Monitor with a salute to the holiday. Andrew Pearson had correspondence from Vietnam, while President Kennedy spent much of the weekend in New York City. On this same day, Black Muslim activist Malcolm X delivered what would become a widely re-quoted speech to the Northern Negro Leadership Conference at the King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit. His message was one of revolution. He heavily criticized civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., who he said sold out and added that the March on Washington was "nothing but a circus, with clowns and all... white and black clowns." The next morning President Kennedy and his family flew to the white house. The President and John Jr. went to Arlington National Cemetery to take part in Veterans Day Ceremonies. Meanwhile, The first interplanetary probe in the Soviet Union's Zond program, Kosmos 21, failed to escape Earth orbit after rocket misfire and a failure of proper altitude control. On November 12th, The President met with Portuguese and Uruguayan Ambassadors before hosting an off the record meeting on Cuba that included Robert Kennedy, Dean Rusk and Robert McNamara. He also signed off on National Security Memorandum 271, a then-secret memo to NASA Administrator James E. Webb, telling him "to assume personally the initiative and central responsibility" to develop specific technical proposals "for broader cooperation between the U.S. and the USSR in outer space, including cooperation in lunar landing programs." On Wednesday, November 13th, at 11:15PM, Jean Shepherd signed on from WOR talking about protests, intellectuals, and angry demagogues. Two days after this broadcast, on Friday November 15th, 1963, seven days before President Kennedy's scheduled visit to Dallas, Democratic Party leader Baxton Bryant sent an angry telegram to President Kennedy complaining that Democratic supporters were being shut out of the planned November 22nd luncheon by Dallas Republicans who were in control of the Dallas Citizens Council. The plea was for the President to do something or face a boycott by his most loyal supporters. A motorcade from Dallas Love Field to downtown Dallas was arranged for the Kennedys after another Bryant complaint. That evening, the President flew to Palm Beach, Florida.
Tonight we begin our new story, “The Beast of Black Springs.” In this classic horror creature story, a beast is terrorizing the land in 1800s Black Springs. Having killed all livestock … and humans… on land several miles north, Farm Owner John Bartram finds that his livestock is being savagely killed one by one. John resolves to hunt the beast down with the help of his son, John Jr and his trusted servant, Gerald. But is the beast too much for the men to handle? “Beast of Black Springs” Credits: Created By Sean Ryan/Eric Zimmerman Produced by Red Tusk Media Group Story/Script: Sean Ryan/Eric Zimmerman Narrator: Sean Ryan Female Characters voiced by Trina Deuhart: Male Characters voiced by Sean Ryan: James Henry Sanford Sheriff McKinley John Bartram John Bartram Jr. Gerald Music/Sound: More about Black Springs: Welcome to the new horror podcast on the Underdog Podcast Network. At first glance, Black Springs, looks like any other suburban town in Florida. Built on a swamp with a checkered past, it's the city most people would pass by without another thought. But if you live in Black Springs, you know it's different. Hi everyone, I am Sean Ryan, bringing a new podcast to the underdog podcast net work. Sean and Eric are very excited to present the town of black springs, based on the swampy Floridian town we grew up in. Our mothers begged us not to play in the woods. They told us to stay away from strangers. Stories of haunted woods, disappearances, murders, and sometimes worse were common for us growing, just as their common in Black Springs. In this anthology series, Eric and I have crafted horror fiction all with a true sense of our home and its heart. Coming early September and rolling through the Halloween season, Black Springs will dive into psychological thrillers, tales of serial killers, demons, beasts, and more. It's a true celebration of horror in a unique show format designed to immerse our listeners. Hit that subscribe button and Please wirte a quick review so we can launch this podcast right. At around 4 PM on July 17th, 2015, John Jr. drove to Marsh Street to ensure his father was ok. He approached the front door and could hear the television blaring from the living room. John Jr. noticed the door was unlocked — a curious detail as his father was very safety-conscious. He slowly stepped inside. It took John Jr. a few seconds to register what he saw in the hallway. There was a trail of blood leading to the living room, and he felt he had no choice but to see where it led…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G. On this week's episode we meet up with John Jr. of the San Francisco progressive punk band M.U.T.T. Growing up in the Massachusetts and New Hampshire with limited means, John learned to be very resourceful. John lets us behind the curtain of his life and how he found ways to acquire music legally and possibly not so legally. John took a big leap in life and followed his dream of making music by leaving what was familiar. John found what he was looking for across the country and found likeminded people and the band CULTURE ABUSE was born. After the collapse of CULTURE ABUSE John was left with the yearning to continue making music. Which leads us to today and the creation of M.U.T.T. Learning to not take things so seriously is what lead John to his creation. Join John and I as we “Take It Easy” while “Cruisin'” listening to “Thee Party Song!”M.U.T.T. - “Bad To The Bone” OUT NOW!!!Thanks for listening!!! Please Follow us on Instagram @hiddentracks99
I connected with John Jr through multiple friends and family after he moved down here. We played some golf, attended some events and when he started his business I was able to work with him and support his local business. One thing I love is getting to know the why behind someones story. In Johns story, he left a multigenerational family business to begin something new down in South Florida. He moved down prior to the pandemic and took a look at several service based businesses before selecting landscaping. From there it took off and what started as one truck turned into multiple trucks and teams of people, starting a pest control business and then bringing the true passion of Home building back to the forefront. John wanted to prove to himself he could start something from scratch and with the love, support and sweat equity from his family and brother Mark they have been building and working on the dream. In John's words "he burned the boats" and never looked back. From early morning beginnings, long marathon days and finding time to spend with his closest friends and family, John answers the tough questions, takes "extreme ownership" and keeps it moving. You can reach out to him for any of his service based businesses at www.snellmanconst.com or www.eastcoastsprayers.com. You can also find him on instagram @snellmanconstruction and @eastcoastsprayers. Enjoy the show!

Dealing with the adversity that comes from being a race car driver requires resilience and nerves of steel. For Jimmy Blewett, it was a mentality he was born with, following in the footsteps of his hard-nosed grandfather, father, and older brother. On The Dale Jr. Download, Blewett joins Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis to discuss growing up in a tough household, racing in the modified ranks, and losing a loved one in motorsports.Hailing from Howell, New Jersey, the Blewetts have long been known for their rough and tumble nature. Jimmy recounts stories of his grandfather John dealing with unruly customers at the yard. He also shares episodes from his childhood following his father John Jr.'s racing career, where they were “banned for life” from many of the east coast's finest race establishments due to pit melees. Jimmy shares that initially his grandfather purchased a racecar for his uncle to drive, hoping that it would keep him out of trouble. But his father was so fascinated with the car that he ended up racing and became quite good. He would be a mainstay in the eastern modified ranks for decades, before retiring in the early 90s. About that time, Jimmy's older brother John III was beginning his own impressive chapter of Blewett family racing history, and it would help pave the way for Jimmy to get on track as well. After getting into go-kart racing at the age of 14, he eventually wanted to build a street stock to run at his home track, Wall Stadium. But Grandpa Blewett disapproved, claiming that his running a street stock would embarrass the family, and one night the car disappeared from the shop, a mystery still unsolved. Through his brother's help, Jimmy got the opportunity to test someone else's car, and he was hooked. The story of how Jimmy came to get his first modified is epic, involving a failed effort to get a loan, having to bring his grandfather on as a co-signer, and winning a car show without an engine. Once he was able to scrape together a functioning race car, his challenges were far from over. His grandfather wanted him to start at the back of every race to gain on-track experience. This helped develop his driving ability, and before long Jimmy was a modified race winner. In fact, in his first two full seasons in modified competition at Wall Stadium, he brought home back-to-back season championships.Jimmy speaks candidly about his relationship with his grandfather and father, and how he felt he spent a lot of his career seeking their approval. He also speaks about the mentorship he received from his older brother John III, and how he helped raise Jimmy in the aftermath of his parent's divorce. The two developed a healthy on-track rivalry, always racing each other for bragging rights of the highest placing Blewett. But as time would tell, no amount of conditioning or hardship could prepare the Blewett family for the loss on the horizon. In August 2007, the Blewett brothers were in competition at Thompson Speedway in Connecticut when Jimmy's right-front tire was punctured, causing a head-on collision with the wall. Mayhem behind him ensued, and John and several other cars piled into Jimmy's wrecked modified. Jimmy was knocked unconscious from the impact of the crash, but upon coming to he heard his brother's screams and jumped out to try and save him. Unfortunately, John's injuries would prove too critical and he passed away that evening at the age of 33. Suddenly, Jimmy's entire life had changed and he had an insurmountable tragedy to deal with.DIRTY AIRBefore Jimmy joins the show, Dale, Mike, Alex, and Hannah chat about: Isla and Nicole's first day of school A weekend magnet fishing excursion Dale's late model race at North Wilkesboro The exciting NASCAR weekend at Darlington ASKJR presented by XfinityThis week the fans asked questions about: If Dale has a love for pixie sticks like Mike Davis Staying focused in loud environments Favorite dishes for grilling out To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Suddenly, Jimmy's entire life had changed and he had an insurmountable tragedy to deal with. The Bender family, AKA The Bloody Benders, were a family of serial killers who lived and operated in Labette County, Kansas from May 1871 to December 1872. The family consisted of John Bender, Elvira (John's wife), their son, John Jr., and their daughter, Kate. Based on estimates, the Bender family killed at least a dozen travelers before their crimes were ever discovered. The fate of the family remains unknown to this day. Theories range from a lynching of the family to a successful escape. A lot of folklore and legend surrounds the Bender family, making it very difficult to separate fact from fiction. October 1870 – Several families moved to rural Labette County, KS as part of the Homestead Act. One of those families was a German immigrant family known as the Benders. John, Sr (Pa); Elvira (Ma); John Jr; and Kate. As their homestead was along the Osage trail for those travelling west, they set up a small store and inn for weary travelers. Sadly, for some of those travelers it would be their final stop. The Benders became the first serial killers in America and likely one of the only families of serial killers. In part 1 of the 2 part episode, we lay the foundation of the Benders in Labette County and how after likely killing multiple people their luck of not getting caught had ran out. But days before their grisly crimes were discovered, the Benders vanished. Join Ben and Tom of Part 1 of the Bloody Benders on this episode of Will Continue to Monitor. Between July and October 1965, sisters Sylvia and Jenny Likens was placed under the care of Gertrude Baniszewski by their parents who were carnival workers. The Likens' parents planned to come get them that November. The next four months would be hell on earth for the sisters, primarily Sylvia. As an agreement, Likes' father was to pay Gertrude $20 a week, but after two weeks, payments were a day or two late. Gertrude and her daughter Paula began to physically and mentally abuse the Likens Sisters. They shifted most of the abuse to Sylvia. She was burned, scalded, punched, kicked and hit with objects by the pair. It escalated to Gertrude allowing neighborhood kids to join in on the abuse for a fee of five cents. Gertrude would call Sylvia a prostitute and have her kids spread rumors that she was a sinner. Sylvia would suffer for no reason at all. She was malnourished since she was served expired food or denied food completely. She was incontinent and began urinating herself. Her body, littered with lacerations and bruises, grew weak as time went on. Her abusers would rub salt on Sylvia's wounds until she screamed. Jenny had no other option but to sit there and watch with tears in her eyes. In late October, Gertrude used a heated needle to etch and insult into Sylvia's abdomen. On October 26, 1965, Sylvia Likens died from her extensive injuries. Authorities believed Sylvia died eight hours before a call to police was made. Gertrude, her children Paula and John Jr. and two other neighborhood boys were tried together for Sylvia's murder. All five were found guilty with Gertrude and Paula receiving life sentences. The three boys spent two years in a reformatory since they were minors. All five were paroled, changing their identities and living out their days elsewhere.
