Monday, December 22, 1975, was a busy day in Dartmouth, a small eastern Canadian city bordering the Atlantic Ocean. The weather was getting colder, and the nights were at their longest. It had snowed a bit that day, but it was relatively mild for the time of year. Cpl. Eric Spicer had a shift starting at midnight on the 23rd, but there were lots to do before. He was reprising his role as Santa Claus at the annual police club's Children's party for a few hours before going on duty. He loved the holidays and couldn't wait until after his shift to spend the morning with his two little girls, under four. If only they had known, he would be gone a few hours later. Eric Spicer was very involved in his community, not only as a respected police officer but as a kind and helpful person. He spent much time teaching Sunday school and working at various school dances. In addition, he was incredibly kind to the local children, often bringing them balls to play stick hockey. Keith McCallum was preparing for his shift, too, presumedly dressing for the weather and combing his thick dark hair. He worked as a taxi driver for Bob's Taxi and had only been in the Dartmouth/Halifax area for under a year. He was originally from the village of Bible Hill, approximately 96 km (60 miles) north of Halifax. Little did anyone know that their paths would cross shortly within their shifts, and their lives would be cut short by an assailant. This is episode 46, Cpl. Eric Spicer and Keith McCallum's story.
A tragic, violent event took the life of a gregarious mom of 6 one early fall morning almost 50 years ago in the small quaint city of Brantford. No arrests or charges were ever made for her murder. Who could have killed this fun and hardworking woman? It was the wee hours of the morning; mostly everyone was asleep. It was cold and snowy, and no one was around to witness a young woman's horrible and heinous death in the parking lot behind a building in a fairly residential area. But it was a death six years in the making and could have been prevented. And although changes were made to the system in Ontario because of what happened to our victim, it was a hefty price to pay. Jessica was the quintessential small-town girl. Quiet, timid, nice and respectful. She wanted to live her life, have a family and grow old with someone special. Her dreams were seemingly cut short in August 1996. This is part 2 of Jessica Estabrooks' story, Mr. Big.For this episode, I've had the opportunity to speak to both previous owners, Dawn & Tony of the Domino's pizza where Shane and Jessica both worked. At the time Dawn and Tony had younger children at home and Jessica would often care for them as a way of earning additional funds. She was their babysitter. Remember when Jessica told her dad that she wasn't babysitting anymore and was looking for another job? Yes, this couple knew Jessica and Shane a little more than a passing stranger. If anyone has information on the murder of Jessica Estabrooks, please contact the RCMP Major Crime Unit (south) in NB at 1-506-452-3491 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), should you wish to remain anonymous. Let me set the stage for you. Today we're travelling to the southern part of the province of New Brunswick, a small Canadian province the hugs the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. A place where you can take a deep breath and instantly relax as you inhale the salt air. A place where you can glimpse the aurora borealis at the right time of the year. A place surrounded by friendly people…most of the time. Specifically, we're travelling to the city of Moncton and the village of Dorchester, and the stretch of road and waterways between the two. You may have heard of these two places before in a two-part series in season 1 of this podcast. However, our story today remains unresolved and even though the community, family, and law enforcement believe they know what happened, no one has yet been charged, indicted or convicted. I want to remind people that the opinions I might allude to in this episode as well as the opinions of anyone I interview are just that, opinions. It's up to you to decide your own opinion. Anyone that we may refer to has been named or listed by media in the past. They should be considered innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law. But, maybe you the listeners, hold the key in making sure this person gets the chance to potentially be proven otherwise in court.Today's story is about a young woman, Jessica Lynn Estabrooks. You see, Jessica and I have something in common, we're from the same small village. Did I know her? Not really; I've seen her in town, of course, I knew of her, and we rode the same yellow school bus to and from school, during high school. She was a couple of years older than me, and at that age, you're really years apart. But what happened to Jessica affected a whole community, in more ways than one. A community, that despite the maximum-security prison that sat upon the highest hill, felt connected and safe. Of course, the events affected Jessica's family and closest friends the most, how could it not?Music provided by Scout Hurl -Twitter: @scoutlhurt Background music from Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/ilya-kuznetsov/serenityLicense code: ASJ0S0N3EPDEH8HRCrime Article & Sources will be listed on the website, as well as additional photos: https://truecrimerealtimepod.com/Feel like supporting the show? A heinous act followed by solid police work. A trial filled with a litany of labels against the victim, leading and tickling conscious or unconscious bias and unjust stereotypes, holding a mirror up to the Canadian populace. Coast to coast outrage, would the Canadian justice system change? This is episode 40, the Yellowhead Inn, Cindy Gladue's story.Cindy met Bradley the evening before. On this evening she, Bradley, and his co-worker Kevin stayed in the hotel lounge at The Yellowhead Inn, where Bradley was staying, until just after the last call. They continued to drink for the rest of the evening. Bradley was showing affection toward Cindy throughout the evening. The three of them left together and walked down the dimly lit hallway towards their respective rooms. This was at 12:42 am on June 22. Cindy was clearly intoxicated. She was swaying as she walked and would grab towards the wall and lean on Bradley several times as they walked down that hall. As they walked down the hall, Bradley asked Kevin if he "wanted a piece of this," referring to Cindy. Kevin declined and told him that he just wanted to eat his food and go to bed. Bradley then said, "Kev, what happens on the road stays on the road; it doesn't get back home."But when the door closed behind Cindy, as she entered that room, it would prove to be a tragic evening, ending her life.Music provided by Scout Hurl -Twitter: @scoutlhurt Crime Article & Sources will be listed on the website, as well as additional photos: https://truecrimerealtimepod.com/Feel like supporting the show? "I don't think he left that house alive" ~ Dee. It was the end of August, the last day in fact, and Cory's day started like any other...at the gym. He was in a good mood and joking around; he'd lost a few pounds and was going to need to double down on some eating to gain that weight back. Robert Wagner, known as Robbie to his friends and family, is fondly remembered. He was an enterprising and intelligent young man who found himself down a path that may have unknowingly lead to his brutal murder. About 3 weeks before he was viciously struck down, Robbie confided in his brother-in-law that he didn't have much time left in this world. And he didn't. By mid-January, his life would end. The case is cold, but the Major crime unit would move it to the top of their priority list if new information was provided. Although nowhere near the sophistication and glory that its namesake evokes, a beautiful little town none the less. Its main street hugs the side of the Grand River that runs through it. And, dotted along the river are trendy restaurants and bars. In addition to the charming shops, dentists, insurance brokers, and financial institutions is a cute boutique hotel, each room styled after a famous author. It's easy to forget that this was once the home of a man that became so enthralled with money that he eventually earned the title of Canada's Most Wanted. It was March of 1902. A little over a year since Winston Churchill made his maiden speech. A few months since Theodore Roosevelt renamed the executive mansion as the white house. Three months since the first Nobel prize in physics was awarded to Wilhelm Rontgen for his invention of the x-ray. And, just around the time when many Canadian soldiers were returning from fighting in the Boer war. But James Quirk wasn't one of those returning soldiers. On a bright spring day in May of 1974, on the side of a highway in the mountains of British Columbia, a small child of four tiredly walked several feet behind her mother and stepfather, barefoot, dirty and crying, dragging her teddy bear behind her on the gravel shoulder of the Trans-Canada Highway.A passerby, Robert, would pull over and give the family a ride to Vancouver, set them up in a hotel, and get the child's stepfather a job, and take temporary custody of the girl. One morning her mother would come and fetch her and the next time he would hear of the little girl, she'd be dead. The people of the city were terrified and upset. Where was Tricia? What happened to her? Parents started walking their kids to school, and teachers began talking about stranger-danger in the classroom.Joyce gave permission to the Brantford Police Services to tap a phone call she would make to John Wildman from the police station. Here is the transcript of the call:"John: Well, uh, what I can't understand, Joyce, is why you would phone here on Thursday night before anyone knew about Trish and accuse me, and then your friends, Val and them, phone the people downstairs on Saturday Joyce and say the same thing. Joyce: Same thing about what?John: They told Bev and Ron that between them and myself that we killed Trish, and this was on Saturday, Joyce. The charred remains of Philip Lake were discovered the morning of Monday, January 6th, 1936 by neighbour and fellow settler Otto Blakeney, who was on his way to see Philip for some provisions. After discovering Philip’s partially cremated body, Otto frantically searched the smouldering ruins for Philip’s wife and two small children. After only finding Philip and the skeleton of their cat what was left of the family’s two room cabin, he started searching the surrounding property. About 200 yards away, near Ballast Pit Road, lay the nearly nude body of Bertha Lake with a halo of blood drenched in the snow surrounding her. Her arms outstretched as though searching for her babies and a little further from that was the frozen body of little Jackie Lake, left to die in the freezing temperatures. New Years came and went and the Lake family celebrated with friend and neighbour, Otto Blakeney, in their 2-room cabin. It was winter, and a blanket of snow covered the ground. Nothing that outdoorsman and woodcutter Otto couldn’t handle. Besides, Philip and Bertha Lake had two small children at home, 21-month-old Jack and 6-month-old Betty, so it was easier for Otto to come to them. The day together ended and Otto went home and the Lake family continued on with their daily grind. The sun rose on Monday, January 6 1936, Otto peered the bellowing smoke beyond the horizon, coming from the general direction of his friend and neighbour. The mail was starting to pile for Gail on the hall table. On Wednesday there were 2 letters, on Thursday there was a small parcel and some small mail. But none of the items were picked up. This was odd, Gail always picked her mail. She was supposed to be at work but hadn’t showed up there either. Her work place called her landlord, asking if he knew where she was. Gerry, her landlord, said he would check on her apartment as she also hadn’t picked up her mail. He went up stairs and as he knocked on Gail’s door, it swung open, revealing a crime that will be forever engraved in Gerry’s mind. It was a beautiful warm autumn day and Josie was running late leaving the house for school. Her brother Waldo did not feel like waiting, so he left ahead of her. At 8:30 AM Josie grabbed her school book said her goodbyes and left the home smiling as she started walking to school. She never made it to school. Her mutilated & decapitated body lay in the bushes in the most secluded part of her route, leading law enforcement to believe the attack was pre-meditated. Her head was only found the following day wrapped in a the cape that she had been wearing and having the earrings cut from her ears. What happened to Josie? Was her murderer ever caught? It was a beautiful day. Bright, sunny & warm. A true mark that spring was soon turning into summer. A feeling of unspoken promise. It was Bonnie’s 45th birthday, wedding anniversary and the Monday of a long weekend. Little did she know her husband Gary was planning a small get together for her later that day. Everyone was home, Gary was waiting for a friend to pick him up so they can go pick up a cake for Bonnie’s birthday. Bonnie quietly slipped out of the house shortly before 11 AM, only to be found broken and bruised at the end of a neighbour’s driveway just around the corner 10 – 15 minutes or so later. When Thelma was 75, she moved into a 1-bedroom subsidized city-housing apartment geared towards “at risk” seniors who were still mostly independent. She lived there alone . The lack of security at the city housing buildings have led to increased violence and drug dealings. She was murdered and discovered 2 days later. December 2nd will mark the 15-year anniversary of Thelma’s death and her children and family still don’t have answers. What would drive someone to viciously beat and kill at 79-year-old woman? Ted's body was found floating in the Grand River in Brantford, Ontario on June 27th, 1975. The cause of death was confirmed to be drowning, but the police didn't initially investigate as they determine the manner of death was accidental whilst Ted was swimming... None of these early conclusions made sense. When the police finally re-opened the case in 2003, the entire original case file has been destroyed. in this episode we cover what facts we do know and interview on the two people who found Ted's body on that Friday. On Friday July 27, 1975 two teenage boys out for a walk along the many trails peppered throughout Brantford, Ontario, discovered the body of Edward (Teddy) Chadwick floating in the Grand River. Edward wasn't known to swim, having suffered damage to a leg and arm as a result of a very bad car accident in 1966, which left him in a coma for 6 weeks. His body was pulled from the river, and although he suffered some injuries, such as a bloody nose, his cause of death was drowning. The family believe they know what happened, but no one is talking and his Fiancee is still heartbroken with no closure in sight Sources: Brantford Expositor, July 28, 1975 Article Brantford Expositor, July 30, 1975 Article Brantford Expositor, October 29, 2005 Interviews and information from police original podcast content. website: www.truecrimerealtimepod.com Brantford Police: (519) 756-7050
