Dr. Eric Hehman studies the geography of bias. Lots of research has looked at the prejudice that lives in an individual person’s head, but Eric looks at the average amount of bias in particular location. On average, some counties have more implicit bias than others, and some states have more bias than others. But what does it mean? That’s what Eric and I talk about this week!Things we mention in this episode:Zippia’s collection of fun maps, including Thanksgiving sides, pickle fandom, and sandwich preferences. Regional implicit biases are related to police use of force against African Americans in that region (Hehman, Flake, & Calanchini, 2018)Inspiration for Eric’s focus on regional bias (Motyl et al., 2014; Rae & Olson, 2015; Rentfrow et al., 2013)How same-sex marriage legislation affected anti-gay bias one state at a time (Ofosu, Chambers, Chen, & Hehman, 2019)Validating region-based measures of bias (Hehman, Calanchini, Flake, & Leitner, 2019)Searching for environmental features that relate a region’s level of bias (Hehman, Ofosu, & Calanchini, 2020)The “bias of crowds” model of implicit bias (Payne, Vuletich, & Lundberg, 2017)Check out my new audio course on Knowable: "The Science of Persuasion."For a transcript of this episode, visit: http://opinionsciencepodcast.com/episode/geography-of-bias-with-eric-hehman/Learn more about Opinion Science at http://opinionsciencepodcast.com/ and follow @OpinionSciPod on Twitter.

Welcome to Episode #37 of the Encouragers United Podcast. American football is consider to be the most popular sport in the United States. Participants and fans enjoy all levels of the game, from professional and college football, high school and youth programsl. As of 2012, nearly 1.1 million high school athletes and 70,000 college athletes play the sport in the United States annually. The National Football League, the most popular American sport governing body, has the highest average attendance of any professional sports league in the world. Its championship game, the Super Bowl, ranks among the most-watched sporting events in the world. The league has an annual revenue of around US$13 billion.- Wikipedia Many young men, including me, began our athletic careers playing this great game. Throughout my formative years, I learned invaluable life lessons like teamwork, perseverance, courage and discipline from a host of great coaches who instilled in me an ethic of integrity, responsibility, passion and respect. As I have matured to become a leader in the athletic related sector of our society, I believe that sport is a valuable "trojan horse" to capture the attention of young people, and teach lessons that will last long into adulthood. I, and many other faithful Christian disciples have tried to integrate our faith deeply into the strategy and execution of our teams and organizations. Eric Hehman and Joel Penner, both head football coaches at the university level, are successfully creating cultures of honor and strength, leading young men and ultimately their campus communities in a passionate pursuit of God's standard for life, conduct and relationships. https://www.dordt.edu/athletics/mens-sports/football/coaching-staff/joel-penner http://www.onutigers.com/coach/16/16#coach_Eric_Hehman Encouragement Positive mental attitude Enthusiasm, Dreamer, Coach, Mentor, Friend Charlesrgrimes@gmail.com charlesrgrimes.com Twitter: @charlesrgrimes https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlie-grimes-2b78444b/ https://www.instagram.com/encouragers_united/ https://www.facebook.com/EncouragersUnited/?modal=admin_todo_tour https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS-40nUSl9SCekbbhk3FzYw?view_as=subscriber --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/encouragers-united/message
