Annemieke Bosman praat met stripauteur Erik Kriek over zijn nieuwste boek De Kuil. Na het tragische verlies van hun zoon betrekken Huub en Sara een oud familiehuis in de bossen van de Veluwe. In de hoop het verdriet achter zich te kunnen laten en hun leven weer een beetje op de rails te krijgen. Maar was dit nou wel zo'n goede beslissing? En wat betekenen die vreemde tekens die in de oude beukenbomen zijn gekerfd eigenlijk? Erik Kriek is illustrator en striptekenaar. Hij maakt illustraties voor onder meer Boston Globe, Weltwoche, de Volkskrant, NRC Handelsblad, Vrij Nederland, Het Parool en en de VPRO Gids en ontwerpt albumhoezen, posters en skateboards. Verder publiceert hij regelmatig in Zone 5300. In 2008 won hij de Stripschapprijs, Nederlands meest prestigieuze prijs voor striptekenaars. In 2012 verscheen zijn verzamelde bewerkingen van de verhalen van H.P. Lovecraft, Het onzienbare en andere verhalen, dat inmiddels in het Spaans, Frans, Italiaans, Duits, Servisch en Zweeds is verschenen.

Leon praat in Oeverloos met Erik over het ambacht van tekenen, over zijn fascinatie voor Vikingen en IJsland, en ook over de muziek uit dat land. Erik maakte eerder een verstripping van ‘murder ballads’, die internationaal zoveel lof kreeg dat Ridley Scott (!) interesse heeft in de verfilming. Dus gaat het in Oeverloos ook over murder ballads, over Eriks liefde voor bluegrass, over Tim Knol, de teksten van Hank Williams en de volgens Erik beste liveband van Nederland: T-99.

His recommendation for the month is In the Pines, a graphic novel adaptation of 5 murder ballads by the Dutch cartoonist Erik Kriek. The book was released by Fantagraphics in July 2017.
