What would you do differently if you knew from day one that somebody else would eventually need to run your business? In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I'm joined by Gavin Bell, entrepreneur and founder of Yatta, the paid media agency he deliberately built to be sellable before its acquisition by Velstar in 2024. Gavin's story is particularly interesting because selling Yatta wasn't something that simply happened after years of building the agency. It influenced how he designed the business from the outset. Inspired by Built to Sell, Gavin moved away from building a business around his own personal brand and expertise. Instead, he created packaged services, recurring revenues, repeatable systems and, crucially, a business capable of delivering without him. That meant progressively removing himself from sales and client delivery, bringing in people who could take over those responsibilities and resisting the temptation to maximise his own income at the expense of the value of the company. The result was a business attractive enough to be acquired by Velstar, with Gavin negotiating the original two-year earn-out down to nine months and ultimately leaving after eight. There's an important lesson here for any founder, whether or not you currently intend to sell. The one key thing: build a business that works without you before you need it to work without you. The disciplines that make a company sellable are often the same disciplines that make it scalable: recurring revenue, clear propositions, good people, repeatable systems, healthy profit and reduced dependency on the founder. Today, Gavin is applying some of those lessons to a very different venture. Talo is an online lifestyle pharmacy focused on treatments that people may be less comfortable discussing with their GP. Its longer-term ambition is much bigger: moving towards what Gavin describes as precision health, using diagnostics, personal data and AI to help create increasingly personalised and proactive healthcare. One of the interesting aspects of Talo's approach is that, in a market where technology is often being used to remove human interaction, Gavin is deliberately putting some of it back in. For its weight loss offering, Talo plans an upfront consultation followed by ongoing coaching. The intention is to improve outcomes, create greater trust and tackle the high customer churn seen in a market where customers can easily move between providers and introductory offers. We also explore how AI is changing Gavin's approach to building the business. Rather than spending heavily on developers to test every new idea, Gavin is using AI development tools to create prototypes before passing them to professional developers. That makes experimentation faster and considerably cheaper. But Gavin believes there is a much bigger strategic implication. If AI makes software increasingly quick and inexpensive to reproduce, simply owning proprietary code may become much less of a competitive advantage. The real value could increasingly sit elsewhere: in your customer relationships, proprietary data, distribution, marketing capability and, most importantly, your ability to demonstrate that what you do actually produces results. That is a significant question for founders thinking about where the long-term value of their businesses really lies. This is not a First Amendment issue. He wasn't peacefully protesting. There is plenty of video showing him actively blocking ICE vehicles before the shooting. That matters. This is also not a Second Amendment issue. He wasn't walking down the street, minding his business, and accidentally flashing a concealed carry gun. He was in direct physical conflict with law enforcement while armed. According to reporting, he had allegedly been “on duty” the week before, tracking ICE, and had been taken to the ground by agents, injuring his ribs. This time, when he went back “on duty,” he brought a gun. I understand why people instinctively hesitate to side with federal law enforcement. I really do. But if we're being honest, this situation demands a clear-eyed assessment—not emotional reflexes or ideological posturing. If the political alignment were reversed—if this were someone at a protest you agreed with—would you still argue the outcome was justified? In this case, my answer is still yes, the individual was at fault, regardless of ideology. As gun owners, we talk constantly about personal responsibility. That responsibility includes knowing what situations you do not escalate, especially when armed. A fight you cannot win is a fight against law enforcement officers when you are carrying a firearm. The moment you insert yourself into a physical confrontation with LEOs while armed, you are the one escalating the situation. Everyone knows this. This is not new. « Non à la CAN de football tous les quatre ans ! » : c'est le cri de guerre de notre invité congolais de ce mardi 6 janvier, après la décision du Sud-Africain Patrice Motsepe, le président de la Confédération africaine de football, de faire passer le célèbre tournoi de une fois tous les deux ans à une fois tous les quatre ans. Youssouf Mulumbu a été le capitaine des Léopards du Congo Kinshasa et a notamment joué au PSG. Il publie aujourd'hui le roman Talo, aux éditions Jets d'encre. Pour lui, la CAF africaine de Patrice Motsepe doit résister aux pressions de la Fifa mondiale de Gianni Infantino. Il le dit au micro de Christophe Boisbouvier. RFI : Youssouf Mulumbu, le 20 décembre dernier, le président de la CAF, le Sud-Africain Patrice Motsepe, a jeté un pavé dans la mare. À partir de 2028 a-t-il dit : « La CAN de football ne se disputera plus tous les deux ans, mais tous les quatre ans ». Quelle est votre réaction ? Youssouf Mulumbu : moi, ça ne me surprend pas tellement, il y avait des signes. Je pense que le président Motsepe est plus basé sur les compétitions occidentales et s'est aligné justement sur cette nouvelle Coupe du monde des clubs qui, pour la CAN, est un dommage collatéral. Alors l'un des arguments justement du Sud-Africain Motsepe, c'est de dire que l'Afrique doit s'aligner sur la Coupe du monde et sur le championnat d'Europe, qui sont des tournois qui ont lieu tous les quatre ans. Bien au contraire, l'Afrique a ses réalités avec ses infrastructures. Donc je ne vois pas comment on peut s'aligner aujourd'hui avec l'Europe, sachant que la CAN, la Coupe d'Afrique, fait partie du développement de certains pays. On peut voir sur les infrastructures de transport, sur les infrastructures justement sportives. Et donc ça va être un dommage collatéral pour l'Afrique et pour des pays qui sont sous-développés. Oui, parce que le fait que la CAN ait lieu tous les deux ans, ça veut dire que, tous les deux ans, il y a de nouvelles routes, de nouveaux stades, de nouveaux hôpitaux ? Exactement, c'est l'histoire de cette Coupe d'Afrique. Et tous les deux ans et pour chaque Africain, on l'attend chaque deux ans. Donc on ne devrait pas s'aligner avec l'Europe parce que l'Afrique a ses réalités et donc c'est un bel événement pour le développement du pays. Moi, j'ai pu le voir avec le Gabon, j'ai pu le voir avec la Guinée et aujourd'hui je pense qu'on a plus pensé aux clubs européens parce que, pour leur gestion, ça va être plus facile. Et on a pensé vraiment à cette Coupe du monde des clubs qui est un peu l'atout majeur pour la FIFA. Oui, c'est-à dire-que vous pensez que cette réforme, c'est aussi une concession faite aux puissants clubs européens, comme le PSG où vous avez joué Youssouf Mulumbu, mais aussi bien sûr comme le Real, Arsenal, etc. qui n'ont jamais eu envie de laisser partir leurs joueurs africains tous les deux ans pendant plus d'un mois ? Exactement. On voit de plus en plus de joueurs qui évoluent dans des grands clubs, donc forcément, pour eux, c'est tout bénef. Et je pense qu'il va falloir militer vraiment pour que cette CAN revienne tous les deux ans. Et je pense que tous les joueurs, qu'ils soient anciens et nouveaux, doivent se mettre en avant pour justement donner de la voix pour que cette CAN reste toutes les deux années. Alors un autre argument quand même de la part du président Motsepe, c'est qu'une CAN tous les quatre ans, cela rendra la compétition plus rare, donc plus prestigieuse, comme la Coupe du monde par exemple. Et donc cela fera monter les droits télés et le nombre des sponsors … Son argument peut être louable, mais quand on regarde le pour et le contre, je pense qu'il y a plus de désavantages pour le continent africain aujourd'hui. Cette CAN, nous on la regarde avec des yeux qui brillent. On l'attend chaque deux ans. Je ne vois pas pourquoi deux années de plus vont faire que cette CAN va être plus attractive. Et aujourd'hui, on voit une CAN où on a des superstars qui viennent la voir, comme Mbappé, comme Zidane. Et donc pour nous, elle est bien comme ça. Donc je ne vois pas comment elle va être plus prestigieuse tous les quatre ans. Donc vraiment, je pense que tout le monde doit se lever d'une même voix. Donc allons militer et remettez-nous cette compétition tous les deux ans, parce que nous, ça nous fait vibrer de voir les peuples justement vibrer, un peu comme le Congo qui a des conflits géopolitiques. Et aujourd'hui mettre à part ces conflits là pour se focaliser justement sur cette compétition, ça donne un peu du baume au cœur et un peu de joie à ce peuple-là. Donc, il va falloir garder cette CAN tous les deux ans. Oui, pour le peuple congolais, c'est une grande respiration au milieu de la guerre ? Exactement, comme vous le voyez à chaque célébration. Je pense que les joueurs n'ont pas oublié qu'au pays c'est un peu terrible et surtout du côté Est. Donc voilà, de parler justement du Congo, ça donne un peu plus de joie à ce peuple-là. Oui, offrez-nous au moins tous les deux ans une parenthèse enchantée. Exactement, et je pense que c'est très important. Mais franchement, Youssouf Mulumbu, est ce que financièrement la CAF n'est pas très dépendante de la FIFA ? Forcément. Mais feu Issa Hayatou, paix à son âme, avait résisté justement à cette pression qui était déjà mise pour que cette compétition se déroule tous les quatre ans ! Last week at this time, investors and the world were wondering if an attack on Iran would spiral into a broader war. Since then, oil prices plunged nearly 20% (shown below), and the focus shifted to TALO. The White House criticized Canada for having the audacity to do to the US what China did—retaliate where it hurts. China restricted rare earth exports, while Canada imposed digital taxes. Same idea.Given that Iran is now in the rearview mirror, where does that leave us? A few thoughts on markets below. Before I jump in, however, two podcasts. First, I spoke last week with Democratic Congressman Jim Himes, who accurately predicted the policy with Iran and also shared his thoughts with what is going on in DC more broadly. Among other interesting points: Congress won't constrain spending until a crisis emerges. This suggests ever-larger deficits until long-end bond yields spike. Other countries are balancing their budgets; the US, not so much. Second, a past guest, Dr. Alexander Vanyukov, was labeled a “foreign agent” by Russia last week. You can hear our 2021 conversation here. Alexander is a friend and a remarkable person—the type a government should treasure. You can hear why in this podcast. During COVID, his hospital was on the front lines, and among other innovative solutions, he called for volunteers in a notoriously cynical society and recruited soccer hooligans to care for grandmothers. I'm not making this up. That Russia is punishing someone like him shows how far the government has veered off course, alienating talent, as it has for generations. Russia is dangerous, and the US will likely abandon Ukraine to Russia's grip as fall approaches and US funding dries up. While it won't happen this fall, if Russia isn't contained, other countries will end up in Ukraine's situation. We all know the story; Alexander's conversation puts a human face on it. Regarding the markets, three big themes stand out: AI, slowing growth, and tariffs.* This week, AI went haywire; the NASDAQ surged nearly 4% and is now up 4.5% for the year. But this had little to do with AI. Instead, it was driven by a) the realization that Iran was foreign policy Kabuki and b) expectations the Fed is about to cut interest rates. But why “b”? Not because the Fed said so. The Fed chief stated the opposite in two days of testimony, emphasizing they are in no hurry to cut rates. Yet, the market anticipates rate cuts and priced in another 25 basis points of cuts just as tariffs are set to kick in and drive up prices. As a result, rate expectations shifted significantly, the yield curve steepened, and stocks soared. We now have a sense of what will happen when rates are cut, though I suspect that won't happen for a while. The line below shows the change in discounting. * Growth is slowing, slowly and at various paces in different countries. If you look at where unemployment is above average and yet bond markets are discounting relative strength, some of the smaller countries on the periphery stand out, like New Zealand and Sweden. That said, our perception is that growth is gradually slowing everywhere. Most governments are reducing spending, private sector borrowing is lackluster, and unemployment is rising, so incomes are falling. In short, where is the fuel for a boom, outside of AI?* Tariffs are coming. We just don't know how much or when, and everyone is confused. If I were the Fed, I'd stick to my guns and hold off on rate changes until inflation and employment data clarify the situation. If I were in the White House, I'd delay the tariffs because signing these deals is clearly tough. If I were Canada or China, I'd do exactly what they are doing. How many times has the US Commerce Secretary said a flurry of deals was just around the corner? The net effect of the uncertainty is loose monetary policy globally (as growth slows), and the net effect of technology is deflation, so the rally in assets (stocks and bonds) might just be getting started. However, the focus could shift to Asia, which a) has strong technology, b) has lagged the equity rally, and c) is increasingly focused on shareholder returns. No hay nadie que haga el bien» (Salmos 14:1) A la mayoría de nosotros jamás se nos ocurriría pensar que este versículo pudiera referirse a nosotros. Después de todo, ¡somos creyentes! Nunca diríamos que Dios no existe. Quizás debamos considerarlo de nuevo. Es cierto que con nuestros labios nunca diríamos algo así, pero… ¿no es cierto que a veces lo decimos con nuestras acciones? Lo decimos cuando pecamos solo un poquito aquí y allá, y pensamos que no tiene importancia ninguna. Vemos películas inmorales o nos reunimos para criticar al pastor, ignorando el mandato de Dios de no hacerlo. Con nuestras acciones estamos diciendo: “Dios no existe”. En Salmos 14:1 se asocia esta forma de actuar con la corrupción. Bien sea que te des cuenta o no, mientras más te comportes de esa manera, más corrupto te volverás. No caigas en el mismo error que cometen los necios cuando manifiestan públicamente que Jesús es el Señor de sus vidas, pero en la vida privada lo niegan con sus acciones.
