While we often touch on the contemporary songs of our own and subsequent generations in the show, we also like to drill into the performers and sounds that contributed to our musical heritage. The foundation of America's music is not just a single flavor. It is a melting pot of many from all corners: the British Isles, the African continent, the islands of the Caribbean, and points south and north. The resulting harmonies, topics, and musical celebrations have further woven themselves into the fabric of our culture. This week's show leans on some pieces that were suggested by a listener and this allowed me to take liberties when digging a bit deeper for the show. We'll hear from Pete Seeger, The Million Dollar Quartet, Buck Owens, Alison Krauss and Mississippi Fred McDowell. We'll also take in the American Songbag's In The Pines and then proceed down the river and over the hill in the show this week.

For Episode 40, Kate Carpenter is joined by Dr. Grace Elizabeth Hale. Grace is the Commonwealth Professor of American Studies and History at the University of Virginia, and the author of four books. Her two most recent are Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia, Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture, which was published by UNC Press in 2020, and In the Pines: A Lynching, a Lie, a Reckoning, published by Little Brown in 2023. In the Pines is a remarkable book that combines Grace's investigation into her own family's history and her expertise as a scholar of white supremacy to investigate the pervasive racial terror of the Jim Crow South and its lasting impact. This week we welcome The Baker Family! From Birch Tree, Missouri, the Baker Family has become one of the most talked- about family musical ensembles in the country. They tour nationwide, performing around 100 concerts each year, and they have produced multiple CDs. The Baker Family is a past winner of the Entertainer of the Year award given by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America-Midwest. The band also received the Album of the Year honor from that same organization. In 2016, the Baker Family won the Youth in Bluegrass band competition at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. This competition is the premier showcase in the world for bluegrass musicians under the age of 21 and their parents. That same year, the group was named Bluegrass Band of the Year by the International Country Gospel Music Association. The family appeared on season 12 of the NBC television program America's GotTalent. Producers of that program invited the group to audition for the program after seeing a YouTube video of their award-winning performance at the 2016 Youth in Bluegrass band competition. The group has also performed on the RFD-TV program The Bluegrass Trail. The Baker Family has also won the Oklahoma Bluegrass Band championship four times, and they won the Pickin' In The Pines band championship in Arizona in 2013. The band includes mom Carrie Baker, who plays guitar and upright bass. Three of her four children are also in the musical group. Twenty two-year-old Trustin Baker plays fiddle and banjo, and he also sings lead and harmony vocals. He is a past winner of the Grand Master Fiddle Championship at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. This award is the most prestigious honor given to a fiddle player. He has also won more than a dozen other fiddle competitions in five states. Carina Baker, 19, plays mandolin and sings lead and harmony vocals for the family band. She is a past winner of the Mandolin Player of the Year award and the Female Vocalist of the Year award from SPBGMA-Midwest. Seventeen-year-old Elijah Baker plays bass and lead guitar, and he sings both lead and harmony vocals for the group. He is a past winner of the Oklahoma State Junior Fiddle Championship. Both Carina and Elijah have also competed and won other honors for their musicianship at festivals and contests across the country. We are only a few days away from celebrating the Pox & Puss Podcast's 10th anniversary. So, in honor of that day, we bring you b-b-b-b-bonus content from In The Pines, where Pox talks about his 1998 thru-hike and the cast of fugitives and bandits he met along the way. During the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA, Eric Rudolph detonated a 100lbs pipe bomb in Centennial Park. One person was killed and 111 were injured. Three more bombs went off in the weeks and months following the Olympic bombing. What took place after that was an all-out manhunt along the Appalachian Trail and in the Nantahala Gorge. The FBI was looking for Rudolph as far away as the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Pox Holiday was thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1998, around the same time Eric Rudolph disappeared into the mountains for almost 7 years. Pox was even questioned by a member of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park because he looked like a fugitive. Finn McCager Higgins made the stunning film "In The Pines" with his collaborator Tom Groom.  They co-wrote, co-directed, and both played lead roles in the film.  Finn brought his film to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2021 and this Lynchian, personal, beautiful film left an impact on me. I'm proud to say that this film is part of Season 5 of the Discover Indie Film TV Series on Amazon Prime Video. At 41 minutes, it was the "longest short" we had ever programmed.  In fact, it was the excellence of "In The Pines" and the awards jury's difficulty grasping how to compare a 41 minute film with films under 15 minutes that inspired us in 2022 to create the category "featurette."  Now films between 20-60 minutes have their own playing field and they should be thanking Finn and Tom for it. This week we welcome The Baker Family! From Birch Tree, Missouri, the Baker Family has become one of the most talked- about family musical ensembles in the country. They tour nationwide, performing around 100 concerts each year, and they have produced multiple CDs. The Baker Family is a past winner of the Entertainer of the Year award given by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America-Midwest. The band also received the Album of the Year honor from that same organization. In 2016, the Baker Family won the Youth in Bluegrass band competition at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. This competition is the premier showcase in the world for bluegrass musicians under the age of 21 and their parents. That same year, the group was named Bluegrass Band of the Year by the International Country Gospel Music Association. The family appeared on season 12 of the NBC television program America's Got Talent. Producers of that program invited the group to audition for the program after seeing a YouTube video of their award-winning performance at the 2016 Youth in Bluegrass band competition. The group has also performed on the RFD-TV program The Bluegrass Trail. The Baker Family has also won the Oklahoma Bluegrass Band championship four times, and they won the Pickin' In The Pines band championship in Arizona in 2013. The band includes mom Carrie Baker, who plays guitar and upright bass. Three of her four children are also in the musical group. Twenty one-year-old Trustin Baker plays fiddle and banjo, and he also sings lead and harmony vocals. He is a past winner of the Grand Master Fiddle Championship at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. This award is the most prestigious honor given to a fiddle player. He has also won more than a dozen other fiddle competitions in five states. Carina Baker, 18, plays mandolin and sings lead and harmony vocals for the family band. She is a past winner of the Mandolin Player of the Year award and the Female Vocalist of the Year award from SPBGMA-Midwest. Sixteen-year-old Elijah Baker plays bass and lead guitar, and he sings both lead and harmony vocals for the group. He is a past winner of the Oklahoma State Junior Fiddle Championship. Both Carina and Elijah have also competed and won other honors for their musicianship at festivals and contests across the country. This weeks pair of Halloween tales involves vampires and little creatures that live in the mines of Colorado. Also, I spoke with Leah from the acting/drama group "LuneAseas". They are putting on a live action, hiking based play called "In The Pines" that explores some Colorado mysteries and scary stories. Fantastic Negrito is the latest incarnation of Xavier Amin Dephrapaulezz. As a child, he was raised in an orthodox Muslim household in New England. His Somali-Caribbean father was an Oxford-educated immigrant who played traditional African music. Just before he hit his teens, his father relocated their family to Oakland. Coming from his conservative childhood, it was at once an intense culture shock and liberating. The street was alive with the new sounds of hip hop, rap and punk. And he was drawn to it. In his youth, he thought that the Blues was the music of his grandmother's generation. When he landed in LA in the Nineties, he had plans to be a star. And it didn't take him long to land a major label deal. As Xavier, he released the album, The X Factor. Things did not go as planned and in 2000, a near-fatal car crash would take him further away from his musical ambitions. Eventually, he sold all his instruments and moved back to the Bay Area.When he won the 2015 Tiny Desk Contest as Fantastic Negrito, it was with a newfound mission—to make music free of the corrupting influence of capitalism where he could discuss freely the societal ills he observed around him. In the course of three albums—The Last Days of Oakland, Please Don't Be Dead and his latest Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?—he's tackled big issues such as racism, capitalism, gentrification, poverty and misogyny. Despite winning 2 Grammys, he's eschewed big label deals and continues to record at Blackball Studios, part of a collective he co-founded with Empire producer and writer Malcolm Spellman. Based in downtown Oakland where he was recorded for our podcast, you'll hear siren and street sounds outside and that's how he likes it. Like most, I became a fan of Fantastic Negrito when he won Tiny Desk Contest. His backstory was captivating. I have often wondered what would have happened if police had found that the person trying to sell those artist-backstage passes was white? Or that the intern was working for a white artist or band member? Would they have been taken away in handcuffs too? It was the first time, I became aware that America had a racism problem. When we first met last May, he produced two ceramic jars, each containing the very memorable fruits of his labor. One variety, In The Pines, was especially glorious. I think of it as the Tesla of high-performance cannabis--it took me from 0-60 in two seconds. On his property in Ojai, CA, Derek grows 12 plants like the one in the one above: each is 14 feet tall, 10 feet around, and yields 9 lbs.
