This week we welcome two special guests--Amanda Meadows and Geoffrey Golden of the Dirt Cheap podcast--to discuss one of their favorite recent graphic novels: BTTM FDRS, by Ezra Clayton Daniels and Ben Passmore. The book has been compared to Jordan Peele's film Get Out, and features a many-tentacled monster that inhabits an apartment building in a gentrifying Chicago neighborhood. Our guests help us do some panel analysis of the book, and we talk about the horror genre, and dividing line between effective allegory and allegories that feel heavy-handed. We also talk about their podcast, in which they are reading a very bizarre-sounding pulp novel called Murder in the Glass Room, about an L.A. private investigator who is very obsessed with furniture and elevators. You can check out their podcast, Dirt Cheap, here: https://www.neonhum.com/show-pages/dirt-cheap.html You can learn more about the book, BTTM FDRS, at the Fantagraphics site: https://www.fantagraphics.com/products/bttm-fdrs And if you like our podcast, and want more of it in your life, subscribe to our Patreon. $5 a month gets you access to all our bonus episodes, including our newly launched Hunt for the Worst Book of All Time: https://www.patreon.com/BookFight Thanks for listening!

On a new episode of Hard NOC Life, Dominic, Shawn, and Keith return to the Final Frontier and review the CBS All Access Original Series, Star Trek: Picard. Before they dive into their thoughts on Picard, the crew share some news -- Shawn just completed the sixth annual Black Comix Arts Festival in San Francisco, while Dominic gives an update on the podcast, Occupy Me. Then they get into more info about the leaked details from Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX script, including the concept art. This naturally leads to a discussion about JJ Abrams and his film-making style, including the 2009 Star Trek. They also get in to what's wrong with R-rated Trek and why Discovery isn't everyone's cup of tea. When they get to Star Trek: Picard, though the consensus is that it's a good show, its racial dynamics/politics could use some work. Still, it's nice to have Trek back firmly in the 24th century! So grab a cup of Earl Grey, decaf and "make it so!" What's #NerdPoppin this week: For Shawn, it's the Afrofuturist horror-comedy graphic novel, BTTM FDRS by Ezra Clayton Daniels and Ben Passmore. Meanwhile, Dominic is wrapped up in the Senate impeachment trial, and Keith enjoyed the Green Arrow and the Canaries backdoor pilot more than he thought he would. All this and more on Hard NOC Life! Watch it on your screen, hit "play," and check this. Subscribe to all of the podcasts in the Hard NOC Media family on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, NPR One, Spotify, and now on Stitcher Radio! Support us on GoFundMe and Patreon! Buy merch on TeePublic! As always, our official theme music is brought to you by the super team of Adam WarRock and Chops.
