I'm honored to speak with Steve and Diane Miller, the incredible couple behind the Misophonia Research Fund. When their daughter Rachel started being triggered by their voices and chewing about nine years ago, they didn't just try to cope, they redirected their entire family foundation to fund misophonia research. They've basically built the field from the ground up, now funding dozens of researchers worldwide working on everything from brain imaging to AI sound filtering. We talk about what it's really like accelerating medical research, their hopes for bringing young scientists into the field, why open data sharing matters so much, and how simply providing hope can be transformative for our community. These two have genuinely changed the trajectory of misophonia research, and it was such an honor to hear their story and vision for the future. -----Try the new Misophonia Podcast app: https://app.misophoniapodcast.comWeb: https://misophoniapodcast.comOrder "Sounds like Misophonia" - by Dr. Jane Gregory and IEmail: hello@misophoniapodcast.comSend me any feedback! In this episode, I speak with Fay, a Los Angeles-based multimedia artist, actor, and filmmaker who's working on a comedy-horror short film about misophonia. Diagnosed with severe misophonia along with autism, ADHD, fibromyalgia, and several other conditions, Faye considers misophonia one of the most disabling things she deals with daily. We discuss her creative approach to raising awareness through her film—which features a student literally splitting into two people when classmates start chewing gum—her experience growing up in a Soviet refugee family where mental health wasn't discussed, and how her conditions intersect in complex ways. Fay also shares her crowdfunding campaign to pay disabled crew members for the project, and we talk about representation, advocacy, and using comedy to help people understand this often-invisible disorder. Instagram: @misophonia.film @faythefae Support the film on GoFundMe  -----Web: https://misophoniapodcast.comOrder "Sounds like Misophonia" - by Dr. Jane Gregory and IEmail: hello@misophoniapodcast.comSend me any feedback! After discovering her misophonia and realizing how Malta's constant noise amplified her struggles, Michelle channeled her experience into an immersive art project. Working with a local focus group of people with misophonia, she created a short animated film designed to let others experience what we go through—complete with trigger sounds and unsettling visuals using a unique printing technique called Risograph. The project opens at a gallery in Malta and will eventually hit the film festival circuit. After hearing episode 218 with Sarah Barrack about memory reconsolidation, and following a painful breakup that motivated him to seek help, Michael worked with a therapist using EMDR and memory reconsolidation. Through this process, he uncovered a traumatic childhood memory involving his father that he had completely blocked out, and realized his triggers were connected to his father's behaviors. By retrieving and reconsolidating these memories with positive replacements, Michael reports profound relief from his symptoms. He now attends church and leads support groups without the anxiety that controlled his life for 60 years.  -----Web: https://misophoniapodcast.comOrder "Sounds like Misophonia" - by Dr. Jane Gregory and IEmail: hello@misophoniapodcast.comSend me any feedback! This week I talk with Gabriel, a 45-year-old marketing professional from Western Montana. Gabriel shares his lifelong experience with misophonia that started around age five or six, primarily triggered by eating sounds from those closest to him—his parents, wife, and kids. We talk about growing up with a child psychologist father who tried to help through exposure therapy, the decades of shame and secrecy that kept him silent about his condition, and the profound relief of discovering just a few years ago that he wasn't alone. Gabriel opens up about the exhausting work of hiding his reactions, the toll it takes on family relationships, and why he's still struggling to overcome the deep shame despite having a supportive wife and therapist. We also discuss his introverted nature, his hesitation about attending the misophonia convention, and why coming on this podcast represents a significant step toward owning something he's kept hidden for 40 years. It's a raw, honest conversation about isolation, shame, and the difficult journey toward self-acceptance.   -----Web: https://misophoniapodcast.comOrder "Sounds like Misophonia" - by Dr. Jane Gregory and IEmail: hello@misophoniapodcast.comSend me any feedback! Hey Team! This week I'm chatting with Beverly Atkins, founder of Pauseture, an audio-based mindful movement platform grounded in the Feldenkrais Method. It's actually kind of funny, despite Feldenkrais not being particularly well known, this isn't the first time I've discussed it on a podcast, although the last time was on my old ultimate frisbee podcast nearly a decade ago. Anyway, in our conversation today, we discuss how Beverly spent decades unknowingly managing her ADHD by overachieving at work and ignoring her body. But we all know this story and how we all eventually hit a breaking point. Fortunately for Beverly, she stumbled her way into the Feldenkrais method. In the podcast, we dive into how these seemingly simple movements helped Beverly calm her nervous system, get better sleep, regulate her sound sensitivity, and develop an entirely new relationship with her attention. We get into how movement can rewire attention, why novelty is so important for ADHD regulation, and how she took her training and built an app that looks to specifically accommodate neurodivergent needs. I loved this episode; there's a lot of wisdom here about self-awareness, regulation, and finding what works for your unique ADHD flavor. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at HackingYourADHD.com/244 YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/y835cnrk Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HackingYourADHD This Episode's Top Tips 1. Novelty can help drive engagement and attention, especially when it comes to something repetitive like a daily practice. It's not about needing something stimulating in the flashy sense, but rather something that's engaging. Engagement can come in many forms, such as unpredictability, exploration, and just enough challenge to keep us curious. 2. That ability to move your attention on purpose is a skill, one that's often underdeveloped in ADHD brains. While it's easy to think of movement-based practices as purely physical, it's how you're paying attention during the movements that matters; strengthening your ability to shift and direct your attention. 3. Many mindfulness practices involve some level of stillness that doesn't always sit right with some ADHD brains. It's important to listen to what actually works for your body, rather than just what “should” work. If you find the stillness aspect of mindfulness makes you too agitated and restless, try something that has some kind of active aspect to it.

Afternoon Drive with John Maytham

Forensic and Clinical Psychologist Dr Giada Del Fabbro joins John Maytham to unpack Misophonia, a condition that causes every day sounds like chewing or throat clearing to provoke intense emotional reactions. The conversation is prompted by a heartfelt letter from a listener whose 11-year-old son is struggling with the condition. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. We've all been there...you're on the train, maybe tired after a long day, and all you can hear is one side of a fellow passenger's not-too-interesting phone conversation. Or worse, their choice of music, made tinny and monotonous by the awkward angle of their phone speaker. It's irritating, sure, but for some people it goes beyond mild annoyance, into the realms of anger and panic. For these people - who suffer from a condition called 'misophonia' - phone noise, or sounds such as chewing or breathing, are a real problem. We chat to Dr Jane Gregory, a researcher at Oxford's Department of Experimental Psychology who has misophonia, to find out more about this little-known condition.

Sara Barrick, formerly Sara Bidler, has returned to share more of her invaluable insights. Since we last spoke, Sara has published her book "Demystifying Misophonia," which I highly recommend to all our listeners. As a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in misophonia and trauma healing, Sara brings a unique perspective on understanding misophonia as a complex syndrome rather than a single condition. In our previous conversation, she opened many eyes to the role of the nervous system and implicit learning in our reactions to triggers. Today, we'll dive deeper into these concepts and explore the pathways toward healing that Sara has discovered through her work.Book website: Demystifying MisophoniaLink to purchase on AmazonInstagram: @misophoniahealing Facebook: Sara Barrick -----Web: https://misophoniapodcast.comOrder "Sounds like Misophonia" - by Dr. Jane Gregory and ISupport the podcast at https://misophonia.shopEmail: hello@misophoniapodcast.comSend me any feedback! Misophonia: Beyond Sensory Sensitivity

Jake Eaton has a great article on misophonia in Asterisk. Misophonia is a condition in which people can't tolerate certain noises (classically chewing). Nobody loves chewing noises, but misophoniacs go above and beyond, sometimes ending relationships, shutting themselves indoors, or even deliberately trying to deafen themselves in an attempt to escape. So it's a sensory hypersensitivity, right? Maybe not. There's increasing evidence - which I learned about from Jake, but which didn't make it into the article - that misophonia is less about sound than it seems. Misophoniacs who go deaf report that it doesn't go away. Now they get triggered if they see someone chewing. It's the same with other noises. Someone who gets triggered by the sound of forks scraping against a table will eventually get triggered by the sight of the scraping fork. Someone triggered by music will eventually get triggered by someone playing a music video on mute. Maybe this isn't surprising? https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/misophonia-beyond-sensory-sensitivity

Stacy reflects on the complex interplay between her upbringing, her father's bipolar disorder, and her own recovery from food addiction. We dive into how misophonia has affected her relationships, from family dynamics to workplace challenges, and how she's navigated those spaces while maintaining a successful career.
