In this episode of The Backstory, host Anne Hancock Toomey sits down with the Global Head of Healthcare for Blackstone, Ram Jagannath, to trace the path that led him from a childhood as a first-generation American to the upper echelons of finance and healthcare investing. Jagannath shares how his formative years shaped his perspective, weaving through early influences, first jobs, and pivotal experiences—none more striking than his time working in a Croatian refugee camp with Bosnians displaced by the war. From navigating Wall Street to surviving the stock market crash and exploring a career in private equity, Jagannath unpacks lessons on why intellectual curiosity and purpose matter as much as strategy. And in a fast-paced lightning round, he gets personal – family, golf and a little love for Taylor Swift. 4:20 First Jobs and Early Lessons 11:44 College Years and Discovering Fulfillment 13:28 Life-Changing Experience in Croatia 20:09 Transition to Finance and Wall Street 22:42 Discovering Private Equity 25:10 Journey into Healthcare Investing 30:29 Founding a New Firm and Personal Loss 34:52 Leadership Qualities and Values 39:14 Lightning Round: Personal Insights Learn more about your ad choices. The cricketing world is in the process of being turned on its head. In two days, the Indian home team juggernaut is being declawed, derailed, decommissioned, decimated. The word juggernaut, as it happens, has Hindi roots, an Anglicised derivation of Jagannath, and a very apt word for the almost unstoppable force that is Indian cricket at home. After being embarrassed in Bangaluru, the home team cultivated a pitch designed to play to the strengths of the home side, a poppadom-esque surface, waiting to explode on impact when the Indian spin attack delivers its vast array of spin grenades. This masterplan came undone to a degree when Latham won the toss and elected to bat, dooming the hosts to chasing on a deteriorating wicket. New Zealand batted manfully, establishing a passable first innings total before Flatline Santner tore the unflappable Indian line-up to shreds. His 7 wickets, not dissimilar to the spell of the other unheralded tweaker in the match, the almost unplayable Washington Sundar, set up an impressive second innings bowling display from the tourists. Yes, the match is far from over. Writing off the home team's ability to chase down any total in the fourth innings is foolish, but to suggest that New Zealand aren't in the driver's seat, is just as reckless. My enthusiasm around a possible, maybe even probable win, has a touch of premature celebration about it, as the vagaries of this beautiful game can make idiots of us all. But to maintain Santner style reaction to the test match so far is to deny myself the joy of the proceedings to date. The juggernaut is on the cusp of being decommissioned, a home series loss for the first time in 12 years beckons. I am so here for it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Swami Padmanabha and Jaya Jagannath discuss the importance of individuation, of “knowing who we are as an individual; accepting who we are; being who we are; becoming all that we can be”, and how Individuation is not only a preliminary requisite for a balanced experience of bhakti, but also a principle of reality that will play out in all of the different stages of our devotional progress into perfection. Many restrictions to such individuation were also explored: fear of being a person and all that that implies; ••• anger arising from unresolved grief over the loss of idealized expectations; ••• unwillingness to accept our responsibility to our own progress, handing that off to others, such as the guru or the institution; ••• compelled by the need to fit in, connecting our sense of self too tightly to the collective community, and therefore fearing repercussions if we step outside the box; ••• misconceptions about bhakti that close us off from opportunities to receive bhakti in our life because the form doesn't “conform” to how I conceived it should be. Also explored was the collapse of our conceptual framework as being an invitation by god to upgrade and refine those conceptions. And interesting observation was shared that our contemporary culture lacks rituals that traditionally assisted people going thru those critical moments of dis-integrating old ideas of self and the world making room for new growth. All of this and much more in a lively discussion, trying to keep pace with the necessity of the moment. And remember, crisis is not a bad word and variegatedness is not deviation. ▶ WATCH ON FACEBOOK ▶ WATCH ON YOUTUBE ▶ PURCHASE RADICAL PERSONALISM: Revival Manifesto for Proactive Devotion in hardcover, paperback, and/or Kindle formats on Amazon ▶ WRITE your REVIEW of RADICAL PERSONALISM ▶ CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION: Gaudiya Reform Forum on Facebook. ▶ FOR MORE INFO: SwamiPadmanabha.com

From being a food net exporter, Nepal became a food net importer in a matter of a few decades. Whilst agriculture is the mainstay for the majority of the Nepali population, the markets are flooded with imported agricultural commodities. Only recently, farmers in Chitwan staged a protest against the unfair market price for local production due to high imports of goods from India. In today's episode, PEI colleague Lasata Joshi sits with Dr. Jagannath Adhikari to discuss Nepal's growing dependence on food imports. Dr. Jagannath is a human geographer and holds a Ph.D. in Human Geography from The Australian National University. He is currently associated with The Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia, where he is an Adjunct Research Fellow, and with the Nepal Institute of Development Studies (NIDS) as a Senior Researcher. He has carried out a great deal of research on themes like food systems, agricultural development, land reform and management, participatory forest management, biodiversity, urban environment and climate change and food security, and migration and development. In today's episode, Lasata and Dr. Jagannath talk about how an increase in reliance on food imports is a threat to Nepal's national sovereignty. They also explain how, while being predominantly an agricultural economy, the country's food import transactions have expanded in recent decades. Click here to support us on Patreon!!

I'm excited to invite this week's guest back on the show! Susan is an online friend of mine, and she's been on the show twice before to talk about her adventures. First, we discussed the Valley of Flowers and then the Camino Inglés. Now she's back to talk about a 40-year dream she had that she finally fulfilled. One of the things I love about Susan's adventures is that she talks and writes about lesser-known places and routes, so I get to learn about new places. I hope you find this episode inspiring! Susan is a great example of someone who dreamt of a very specific adventure, and made it happen. About Susan Jagannath Susan Jagannath successfully combined a passion for reading, a love of writing and a fascination for technology, to create a career in technical writing. With over 60 technical manuals (not) to her name, she finally decided to use her writing and publishing skills for herself and publish her own books independently. To her mild surprise, her very niche books went bestseller regularly, that's when she realised she had a system that could help others write and publish as well. As an army brat and then military wife, her life included seven different schools, three universities and a couple of emergency evacuations from conflict zones. Travel and adventure were normal parts of life. She now believes in seizing every opportunity to have a new adventure, especially post-pandemic. Whether it's camping on the beach in Australia, trekking in the Himalayas, kayaking in Queensland, whitewater rafting down the Ganges, or walking the Camino in Spain, her philosophy is to pack it into one or two weeks to create memories for a lifetime, (and disconnect from television and computer games). Susan is now on the next adventure of her life, traveling post-pandemic, helping corporate escapees write their first bestseller, and learning to be an awesome grandmother. What You'll Learn How Susan fulfilled a 40-year dream about adventure in the Himalayas Why you might want to plan your own Himalayan trip Susan's top tips for visiting Sandakphu and Kanchenjunga Related Episodes 490 Holly Worton – How Bad Do You Want It? Synopsis As the season begins, we offer you this “Autumn Music” — a woodwind quintet by American composer Jennifer Higdon. Higdon says she wanted to write a companion piece to another famous woodwind quintet titled “Summer Music” by Samuel Barber. Higdon's “Autumn Music” was commissioned by Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honorary society, and premiered at their 1994 national convention in Pittsburgh. “Autumn Music,” says Higdon, “is a sonic picture of the season of brilliant colors. The music of the first part represents the explosion of leaves and the crispness of the air of fall. As the music progresses, it becomes more spare and introspective, moving into a more melancholy and resigned feeling.” Jennifer Higdon was born in Brooklyn in 1962, and teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Her chamber and orchestral pieces have been performed by ensembles coast to coast. She's also active as a performer and, as she explains, as an enthusiastic member of the audience: “I love exploring new works — my own pieces and the music of others — in a general audience setting, just to feel a communal reaction to new sounds. Music speaks to all age levels and all kinds of experiences in our lives. I think it can express anything and everything.” Music Played in Today's Program Jennifer Higdon (b. 1962): Autumn Music –Moran Woodwind Quintet (Crystal 754) On This Day Births 1875 - Lithuanian composer Mikolajus Ciurlionis, in Varena (then the Kaunas province of the Russian Empire; Julian date: Sept. 10); 1933 - Spanish composer Leonardo Balada, in Barcelona; 1961 - American composer Michael Torke, in Milwaukee, Wisc.; Deaths 1989 - American song composer Irving Berlin, age 101, in New York City; Premieres 1869 - Wagner: opera, "Das Rheingold," in Munich at the Hoftheater, Franz Wüllner conducting; The opera was performed at the Bavarian emperor Ludwig II's request, but against the composer's wishes; 1938 - Webern: String Quartet, Op. 28, at South Mountain, Pittsfield, Mass., during the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival; This work was commissioned for $750 by the American music patron, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge; 1964 - Jerry Bock: musical "Fiddler On the Roof" opens on Broadway: It would run for 3,242 performances before closing; 1971 - Barber: "The Lovers" for solo voice and chorus (after a poem by Pablo Neruda), in Philadelphia; 1989 - Bernstein: "Arias and Barcarolles" (orchestrated version prepared by Bright Sheng), at the Tilles Center of Long Island University with the New York Chamber Symphony conducted by Gerard Schwarz and featuring vocalists Susan Graham and Kurt Ollmann; The first version of this work, for soloists and piano four-hands, premiered on May 9, 1988, at Equitable Center Auditorium in New York City; 1990 - James MacMillan: "The Beserking" (Piano Concerto), at Henry Wood Hall in Glasgow by pianist Peter Donohoue and the Royal Scottish Orchestra, Matthias Bamert conducting; 1990 - Christopher Rouse: "Jagannath" for orchestra, by the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Christoph Eschenbach conducting; 2000 - Philip Glass: “Tirol Concerto” for piano and orchestra, by Dennis Russell Davies (piano and conductor) with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, at the 7th annual Klangspuren Festival in Schwaz, Tirol (Austria); 2000 - Zwilich: "Millennium Fantasy" for piano and orchestra, by the Cincinnati Symphony, Jesús Lopez-Cobos conducting with soloist Jeffrey Biegel; Others 1937 - During the Spanish Civil War, Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas conducts his 1935 composition “Homage to Federico Garcia Lorca” in Madrid while the city was under siege by Spanish fascist forces; The Spanish poet Lorca had been killed by the Falangists; Links and Resources On Jennifer Higdon On Barber's "Summer Music"
