Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a great example of a story that works on paper (as a graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley, specifically) but could never work on the big screen. Not unless Edgar Wright directed it, that is. But since it flopped at the box office ten years ago, has this meta mash-up leveled up in the past decade?   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. When Edgar Howard Wright was 21, he wrote a treatment for a film idea that came to him while listening to "Orange", an album by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. With no producer attached, he started to work on other projects, including music videos where he road tested parts of this high-speed car chase concept. His work on these videos led to him creating Shaun of the Dead with Simon Pegg, and his work on that feature got him recognised by Hollywood, who attached him to the film adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim books by Bryan Lee O'Malley. It was at this point in his career that his treatment from 1995 started to get buzz and a team attached, with Wright finally developing the story and then the screenplay. Seven years after the release of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the little treatment that could was finally released as a big-budget Hollywood motion picture. It was called Baby Driver. Brenna and Joe dive headfirst into the graphic novel universe of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim, its toxic masculinity and its Maple-soaked Canadian identity. A text to film comparison with Edgar Wright's adaptation reveals that some problems persist in both mediums, but - mores than any other text thus far - this is the one that reveals how far YALit has changed in just a short span of 8-9 years. Strap yourselves in folks…’cause we’re calling out the fanboys and the haters! We got a stereo, you just got to turn the knob and baby we'll go as far as we can... but we're not garbage men. This week, we have special guest, Matthew Tyler Di Leo (aka SonicMTD) to help talk us through the fandom of Scott Pilgrim... fans. Next week, we have Jen Frankel, author of the Undead Redhead series to chat with us about fans of speculative fiction! Where can I learn more about Matt? If you'd like to hear more from Matt or check out his work, you're in luck! City in Wires, his band His YouTube His Twitter His Facebook Episode outline Fandom Facts History and Origins: > Scott Pilgrim is a series of graphic stories by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The series is about Canadian Scott Pilgrim, a slacker and part-time musician who lives in Toronto, Ontario and plays bass guitar in a band. He falls in love with American delivery girl Ramona Flowers, but must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. > > The series consists of six digest size black-and-white volumes, released between August 2004 and July 2010, by Portland-based independent comic book publisher Oni Press. It was later republished by Fourth Estate, an imprint of HarperCollins. Full-colour hardback volumes, coloured by Nathan Fairbairn, were released from August 2012 to April 2014. > > A film adaptation of the series titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World starring actor Michael Cera in the title role was released in August 2010. A video game adaptation developed by Ubisoft for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade was released the same month. > > — Wikipedia - Scott Pilgrim Search Data: As far as Google trends data goes, Scott Pilgrim looks like a flash in the pan, and the movie is a lot more popular than the graphic novel series. There is a huge spike in interest (on either graph) around August 2010, then a long tail into the present. By country, for the graphic novel series, the top ten countries for search volume are: Iceland (by a large margin), Mexico, Chile, Puerto Rico, United States, Philippines, South Korea, Paraguay, Australia. By country, for the movie, the top ten countries for search volume are: Mexico, Chile, Canada, Puerto Rico, United States, Russia, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom. Size of Fandom: Based on a few data points... According to Oni press, in 2010, and after 6 years, Scott Pilgrim's final volume, Finest Hour had sold over 1 million copies in North America alone (Comicsbeat)... so, presumably that gives about one million as one possible estimate It has over 300 000 ratings on IMDB It has over 12 000 subscribers on the Scott Pilgrim subreddit There is a discord server, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Discord which has over 400 members ... so it's probably fair to say that there are tens of thousands of fans. Fan Demographics: Looking at the ratings from IMDB, we can get an extremely loose sense of the demographics (for the movie at least): Age: Predominantly folks between ages 18-29 (38%) and 30-44 (37%) Gender: Predominantly male (68%) as compared to female (15%); data is missing for other genders Fast Facts: There are about 150 Scott Pilgrim works on Archive of Our Own During its opening weekend, the movie raised $10.5m at the box office... significantly less than the $60m the movie cost to make Last Episode's Famous Last Words T How popular is Scott, as a character within the fandom? G Is the music portion of Scott Pilgrim as important to the GN fans as it is to fans of the movie? Z How divisive was the movie? Lauren What did you think of Lost at Sea?? Do you want to talk about Lost at Sea with Lauren? This week's spotlight Race Against Time IV > Now in its fourth year running, the Race Against Time is an annual charity marathon to raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Canada by beating the SNES classic, Chrono Trigger, as many times as possible in 24 hours. This year, the event is running every week until August 11 and 12 for the main event (see website for detailed schedule). > > Alzheimer's is a terrible disease that slowly robs those afflicted of their memories, and, eventually, their very sense of being. We are racing to help preserve those memories of loved ones and for a cure to stop it once and for all! > > All donations go directly to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Famous Last Words This week's famous last words around next week's fandom, speculative fiction! T Is the distinction between speculative fiction and genre fiction substantial? Fanthropological is an anthropological (ish) podcast where we bring the fan's-eye view to you! Each week, we take a look at a different fandom, dig up interesting background, trivia, and history, and try to get to why it is that people are a fan. We also try to highlight good causes related to that fandom, and find interesting things that fans have created to share those to the world. Each episode is about an hour. Ish. Who is "The Nickscast"? We are the Nickscast! Three products of late-80s / early-90s pop culture who love exploring fandom and everything geek ... who also happen to have been best buddies since high school, and all happen to be named Nick. Yes, we are super creative (dare we say, the most creative). Ahem We are Nick Green, Nick Terwoord, and Nick Zacharewicz: We started the Nickscast as a labour of love, and as a place to entertain and to discuss our love of fans and fandom, and all that is shiny and interesting in that realm. It's what lead us to start our first podcast, our satellite podcasts, Fanthropological, and so much more. We want to help others learn more about different fandoms, and to create empathy with other fans: We dream of a world where other fans aren't "those Weird-o's", but just folks with different tastes. A world where fandom is full of discourse and analysis, and there are plenty of tools and resources to help. Fans building communities to do good in the world. Because everyone's a fan. In Episode 85 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. and Kai Yaniz strap in for our third Crooked Commentary. After years of wishful thinking, we finally rewatched Edgar Wright's 2010 flop-turned-cult-classic Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Based on the comics by Bryan Lee O'Malley, the film stars Michael Cera as a bassist in Canadian indie rock band Sex Bob-Omb who just so happens to be an immature 22-year-old leaving a path of destructive behavior in his wake. But when he falls for the elusive Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Scott winds up on a quest to defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends exes in combat. Although the film failed to make a box office splash, it has found new life on home video. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World still stands as one of Rob's favorite movies, and Kai, well, "appreciates" it. So the film seemed destined for the commentary treatment. Of course, don't listen unless you've already seen the film (highly recommended). But if you're already a Pilgrim-head (can we make that a thing?), let's get into it. 1! 2! 3! 4!  We’re excited to hear your feedback as the Crooked Table Podcast continues to evolve. Hey Amanda and Jenn! I'm looking for a good book for my boyfriend. He's never really enjoyed reading but is trying to change that, particularly because his sister and I just gush over books every time we're around each other and I think he wants in on the fun. He's mentioned that he might be interested in something like Stephen King, but the size of the books are too intimidating. I think he would particularly enjoy mysteries or thrillers, but any genre is welcome. The most important thing is that the books are not too long and they are easy to get through -- so no complicated structures or long lists of characters. Thanks for all you do, --Morgan   2. Hey Get Booked, After reading Bad Feminist for my book club and LOVING it, I've been craving more feministy reading. I've read We Should All Be Feminists and Men Explain Things to Me. I'm currently listening to Missoula by Jon Krakauer and it's completely fascinating. Could you recommend a few of your favorite feminist books? Even novels with strong feminist themes or characters would be good. Thanks!! --Anna   3. Hello! I’m looking for a graphic novel/ comic recommendation. I love the format, but find that I’m quite picky. Based on what I’ve read and liked, it seems that I prefer comics geared towards a younger audience. I’m not opposed to more adult/ mature content, but I’m not super into gratuitous violence/ nudity, etc. I LOVED Nimona, Lumberjanes, Lucky Penny, Henchgirl, all of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s work, and Paper Girls, so if there’s anything that you can recommend similar to those, I’d love to hear about it! Thanks so much! --Ashley   4. Hello! I recently just discovered your podcast and I can't get enough of it! I have a 7 year old son who is in second grade and loves to read. He reads above his grade level and I am looking for book recommendations for him but also that are appropriate for his age. He is very much interested in Legos and Minecraft. I'm wondering if there are any good, but appropriate children's mysteries out there for him. He has recently discovered the Goosebumps series in his Grandpa's basement from when my husband was a kid and has started on those. Thank you for your help! --Christina   5. Hi, I'm constantly trying to expand my genre tastes, and I think it's time to try some romance. There's just one problem: I'm polyamourous and I don't know where to look for poly romance really. I have very low tolerance for competition between potential partners as a plot forwarding device and have trouble empathizing with characters in monogamous relationships angsting about cheating and wandering potential. I've read Ascension and liked the concept but found the writing quality wanting. I'm open to any sub genre of romance, as long as at least some of the primary characters are polyamourous. --Amanda   6. Hello, I am an avid reader but tend to stick to mostly fantasy, sci-fi, and classics. I love classic mystery/detective books like Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, G.K Chesterton's Father Brown and Dorothy Sayers but I am struggling to find contemporary mystery/detective fiction that aren't cookie cutter stories. I'm don't like a lot of gore or sex and I really enjoy the process of discovering who committed the crime. Any books/series recommendations along these lines would be great! --Heather   7. I've been doing a lot of very heavy, very dry reading for my degree, and I need some fun books to read in the meantime. Since everything I've been reading lately has been nonfiction, I thought I would get as far away from that as possible and read some fantasy. But because I'm so busy with school I don't have as much time to read as I wish I did, so I'm hesitant to start a series. I thought some YA could do the trick since the reading is always a bit easier, and I feel like everyday I hear about a new YA fantasy novel that is coming out. I recently read Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and thought it was spectacular, and I also read The Magicians and thought it was great. My favorite author is Neal Stephenson, but I don't have the ability to read such complicated and heavy subject matter at the moment. --Max   Books Discussed Squire by Tamora Pierce (Protector of the Small series) Shadowsong by S.
