Anja Huwe - "Rabenschwarz" a 2024 single on Sacred Bones As the frontwoman for German post-punk band Xmal Deutschland, vocalist Anja Huwe was at the forefront of the 4AD avant-garde art-rock scene in the 1980s. When the band broke up in 1989, Huwe left music to pursue her visual art career.  But now, nearly 30 years later, Huwe re-emerges with her debut solo album, Codes, scheduled for release on March 8th via Sacred Bones Records. Huwe's long-time friend Mona Mur managed to coax her back into the recording studio, and over the span of eighteen months, they crafted a collection of dark, dramatic soundscapes for Huwe to wrap her distinctive vocals around. “Since I sing multilingually, and often work with metaphors, I hope that the listener can grasp the moods without understanding them literally," Huwe shared in a press statement. "I believe that voice, expression, and sound can achieve an overall atmosphere. Sometimes melancholic and blue, but also uplifting, vibrant, or subliminally aggressive." Next up (15:26 to 37:09) they dig into the August issue of AudioXpress, which is dedicated to acoustics and acoustical treatments. Unsurprisingly, Brent and Dennis have opinions about how the high-end audio industry covers room acoustics, including the fact that the most thorough and conclusive research on this subject has largely been ignored. And for something completely different (38:06 to 51:00), they discuss a recent SoundStage! Gloria is a German-Brazilian songwriter and singer. Without ever meeting in person, they fashioned Oceans of Time. Part Cocteau Twins, part Pure Moods, and also entirely its own thing, it's a fantastic recording. In this interview, they join host Jason P.     Peter van Cooten runs the excellent Ambientblog website which has great reviews and, of course, wonderful mixes. Anytime Peter reaches out with a mix idea or a a set he'd like to cross-post on both of our platforms, I will always jump at the chance. As I said on Peter's last guest mix, his sets are different from mine in that they are more intricate. He does not use full tracks, instead opting for excerpts and samples piled on each other, sometimes 2, 3, or 4 tracks play simultaneously, to create a new sound collage. Here's what Peter says about this mix: "Apart from its opening sample – ‘It is time to stop seeing. It is time to stop speaking. It is time to listen', from David Cronenberg's Crimes Of the Future – this mix has no central theme or story. It's up to you, the listener to take the time to listen and go with the flow. Let your fantasy tell you the story. And, after you did, I'd love to hear what you heard. This mix is created using many fragments and samples from longer pieces of music, often presented in multiple layers. Check the original compositions using the tracklist below." Here's a map of the mix, layer upon layer of the 31 tracks used in the collage.   Check out Peter's work here: https://www.ambientblog.net/blog/  He also does surround sound mixes, which you can find here: https://www.ambientblog.net/blog/the-surround-mix-versions/ And Peter is on Mixcloud - https://www.mixcloud.com/ambientblog/ Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T - Start time - Sample Length - Artist - Title Album - Year - Label   00:00 01:12  David Cronenberg - Time To Listen Sample Crimes Of The Future, 2022   00:04 03:35  Dronny Darko & Protou - Sin Eater Liberty: Compilation Of Experimental Music From Ukraine, 2022, Flaming Pines  02:28 02:42  William St. Hugh - Voice Of The Dolphins Dominion, 2022, self-released  04:31 02:16  Tapani Rinne & Teho Majamaki - Lucid Dream On The Border, 2022, Signature Dark  06:13 02:36  Ivan Cebrian & Victor Cerdan - Enemigo Intimo Inside // Outside, 2022, Oigovisiones  06:40 02:30  Park Jiha - At Dawn The Gleam, 2022, Glitterbeat  08:49 02:39  Benedicte Maurseth - Eidfyrder Hárr, 2022, Hubro  10:47 03:51  Bill Fontana - Imaginary Sonic Visions MSCTY Expo Unknown Pleasures Zone, 2022, MSCTY Editions  12:40 02:18  Alva Noto - Odradek (for Jhonn Balance) For, 2006, Line  13:31 01:50  Jacek & Ewa Doroszenko - Night Masque Bodyfulness, 2022, Audiobulb Records  14:17 02:27  Higher Intelligence Agency - The Black Patch Song Of The Machine, 2022, self-released  15:58 02:50  Siddhartha Barnhoorn - Final Ascension Out There, Oceans Of Time, vol. 1, 2022, self-released  18:27 02:24  Mike Lazarev - All That Remains When You Are, 2022, Slowcraft Recordings  20:27 03:17  Orghanon - Dronework V Droneworks I-V, 2022, St.An.Da  22:13 03:27  Aleksi Myllykoski ft Wimme - Composition VI: Inherently Destructive Contamination St. Virus, 2021, Signature Dark  24:37 04:13  Peter Phippen, Rahbi Crawford, Invar Lunde Jr. - Andromeda Galaxies, 2022, Projekt Records  28:46 02:30  Jóhann Jóhansson & Echo Collective - Shell 12 Conversations With Thilo Heinzmann, 2019, Deutsche Grammophon  29:46 05:29  Maggi Payne - Distant Thunder Arctic Winds, 2010, Innova Recordings  33:08 03:07  Leo Kupper - Litanea 1987 Complete Electronic & Voices Works 1961-1987, 2022, Sub Rosa  36:22 04:35  Monty Adkins - Remote Communion Remote Communion, 2020, Cronica  38:56 01:28  Laurie Anderson & Kronos Quartet - Thunder Continues In The Afternoon Landfall, 2018, Nonesuch  40:11 04:35  Cell - Passive Control Part 1 Onwards System, 2022, Ultimae Records  43:27 03:59  Alphaxone & Protou - Sub Signal Stardust, 2017, Cryo Chamber  45:51 03:03  Wil Bolton & Francis Gri - The Ripples Theory Imaginary Tales, 2022, Krysalisound  47:54 02:11  Xqui - Narrator Pieces Part 2, 2022, Somewherecold Records  48:45 03:57  Michel Banabila - Alienation Monochromes, 2022, Tapu Records  52:21 00:55  Stuart A. Sacred Bones Records est un label indépendant américain de Greenpoint un quartier de Brooklyn. Bay Area-based experimental artist Chrystia Cabral started making Gothic-inspired music as SPELLLING, in 2017. The dabbling and experimenting of her first two albums were instructive but have now given way to something more intentional. The bewitching vocals and haunting soundscapes of Pantheon of Me and Mazy Fly are still present but her art has evolved and expanded sonically and thematically on her lush, third record The Turning Wheel. She pulls from Science Fiction authors, fairy tales, Disney and Afro Futurism—building worlds intended for fans of her music to inhabit and seek refuge. Many thanks for making this possible — Tia for taking us through the looking glass and into space. Thank you Sacred Bones Records for use of music. And to Sam McAllister at Pitch Perfect PR.Songs Featured: "Always," "Walk Up To Your House," 'Real Fun" "Little Deer," "Queen of Wands," "The Future," "Emperor with an Egg," "Boys at Schoo," "Revolution" and "The Turning Wheel."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dean Hurley is a sound designer, musician, producer, engineer, and more. He does all things sound, and for the past decade and a half, he's done them with David Lynch, as the operator of Lynch's Asymmetrical Studios. From the streets of LA in Inland Empire to the depths of the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks: The Return, Dean's been responsible for immersing you in the Lynchian world. His work on Twin Peaks: The Return earned him two Emmy nominations. This sound design work on The Return was released as its own album on 2017's Anthology Resource Volume I on Sacred Bones Records. Since then, Dean's also released Anthology Resource Volume II: Philosophy of Beyond, a sonic foray into ideas beyond physical reality.Dean hopped on the call with us here at the Ion Pack, and we talked about working with Lynch, the role of sound in general, and the sublime. We discuss four tracks, reverse engineering, shadow recording, plugging things in, Lynch's recording process, Trent Reznor, interpreting the Twin Peaks script, Walter Hill, Angelo Badalamenti, and MORE. And of course, we try to answer the question, “What do our souls remember?”Music throughout from Twin Peaks: The Return / Dean Hurley's "Anthology Resource Volume I"★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

It's the Season Finale of The Witch Wave! Tia Cabral is a Bay Area-based musician who performs under the magical moniker SPELLLING. She released her first moodily mystical full length Pantheon of Me in September 2017 to rave reviews including being Bandcamp's #4 record of that year, and she followed it up in 2018 with her critically acclaimed darkly sparkling album Mazy Fly released on Sacred Bones Records. On both of these albums, she draws from dream imagery and esoteric symbolism to tap into the ethereal realm of emotion and spirit all spiraling from a synthy sonic palette. Her brand new album, The Turning Wheel, marks a symphonic expansion for SPELLLING, with lush orchestral production that utilizes 31 musicians, and celebrates macrocosmic themes of “human unity, the future, divine love and the enigmatic ups and downs of being a part of this carnival called life. ” It feels very much like a Magnum Opus, and heralds a brilliant and bewitching music-maker at the height of her powers. The visuals for the album are maximalist as well with SPELLLING and co. donning elaborate costumes and metamorphic makeup. SPELLLING has toured with Boy Harsher and Amen Dunes and her live performances are regarded as revelations of spell and spectacle. On this episode, Tia discusses her magical music theories, divine influences from Kate Bush to Sun Ra, and how occult practices like tarot and alchemy helped conjure her new album, The Turning Wheel. Pam also talks about the sacred symbolism of the wheel, and answers a listener question about meeting the felines of her dreams. Our sponsors for this episode are Moon Dust Press, Witch Baby Soap, Motherland, BetterHelp, Mithras Candle, and Maude's Paperwing Gallery

Among the many things we'd been looking forward to in the year of 2021 was the release of Lost Themes III: Alive After Death, the third collection of John Carpenter's original, non-soundtrack musical compositions. And, now that it's here, we can safely say -- and Chris DOES say so, more than once -- that this album is an absolute banger! We got to hear a lot of these tracks when they were released as singles last year, but your humble hosts and Carpenter aficionados think this album is best enjoyed in its entirety. Nick and Chris do another track-by-track review and commentary of this Sacred Bones Records release, and along the way, we imagine the cinematic visions this music might inspire, consider the locked-in groove that Carpenter and his band (son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies) have established over several albums, and even figure out the correct pronunciation of Moog! Plus, Chris braves the brutal world of Australian horror filmmaker Greg McLean, Nick has a bloody good time with an Italian slasher-movie classic, and we celebrate another one of our favorite cinematic composers, Trent Reznor.

SPELLLING - "Secret Thread" from the 2019 album Mazy Fly on Sacred Bones Records. Oakland-based artist Tia Cabral, who records under the name Spellling, found inspiration for today's Song of the Day in both a children's book and her dog. She toldCulture Collide: I remember reading this book called Brown Angels. It’s a little book of poetry, and it has these old photos of black kids just being joyful. There’s a poem in there called "Secret Thread," about the unspoken bond between people and ideas. This thing that tethers you to someone else, that you don’t need words for. So it’s not weightless, it’s the opposite, really. The secret thread is what tethers me. Even though I’m up in the sky, it’s what keeps me tethered to this world. It’s between both- you’re rooted in the earth and looking up into the sky. Today's featured track is also where the title of her latest album originates from. She continued: This was the last song I wrote for the record. It felt like I was collecting a lot of little treasures from other songs. I was inspired by this idea of what the spirit of this record would look like. Mazy Fly was the name I came up with for the music on this record. It’s a creature-like thing, something with wings, something that can transport you to this world. I got the idea from my dog. At the end of writing sessions, we’d go out to this field and she’d run like a maniac. I was inspired by her being in this state of crazy energy. She was running, and it was like she didn’t even know where she was running. It’s like she was flying. And I just loved that moment of the day.

You might be wondering how I made a radio edit of an interview with a band called "Fuck Buttons"... but don't worry! I did it. Like many others, I was really into last year's Blanck Mass record, World Eater (2017, Sacred Bones Records). I was surprised to discover that Blanck Mass is the side project of Benjamin John Power who is also one half of Fuck Buttons. I spent one hot summer night with both members of Fuck Buttons (Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power) in their tour van. The duo were in good spirits, despite the fact that we were all sweating profusely. Rumor has it that the band is working on new material as I write this. Hopefully we'll see some new Fuck Buttons music soon. How do you say "Fuck Buttons" in a family friendly radio environment? How do you make a great radio edit of a long track? What's it like to "jam" when you are in an electronic act? What's it like to have your music selected to be in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games? What place does patriotism have in the lives of Fuck Buttons? You'll have to listen to find out. Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) Fuck Buttons "The Red Wing" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2013) 2) Fuck Buttons "Surf Solar" (radio) edit (7?/download single, ATPR, 2009) 3) Fuck Buttons, Slow Focus (2013) "Stalker" (background) 4) Fuck Buttons "Olympians" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2010) 5) Fuck Buttons "Brainfreeze" (radio) edit (12"/download single, ATPR, 2013) NO songs CANCON

DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: Wait, "Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink", means what now? Mother's Day: Are we sure we're celebrating this in all the right ways and for all the right reasons? We sure hope you didn't think that the Cavs were going to sweep the Celtics, and if you did we ask, "What have you been watching lately?" LeBron James ends up more aggressive in the postgame presser than he appeared to be in the actual game. Oh, and he always demonstrated one of the ways he has a brilliant mind. The Cleveland Indians aren't very good right now but thankfully the season is still young and the AL Central is WAY worse, in fact, it could up being historically bad it's so awful right now. What options are there in trying to fix the Indians' bullpen issues? The average Browns fan hates analytics except when those same analytics produce some sliver of hope that the Browns "maybe" a playoff team next season. The Supreme Court rules in sports gambling's favor, and here comes all whole new world of professional sports viewing as a result. Not to mention, "integrity fees". Mollie reads from the script of "Hypnogasm for Women"... All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. A collaboration mix with Headphone Commute's Mike Lazarev, in which we take five minutes for each turn without knowing the others tracklist. The result: Bipolar! --- originally published on Ambientblog --- We had no clear concept for this mix when we started, other than 'each turn takes 5 minutes, we'll stop at 60, and we'll see where it gets us'. We were unaware of each other's tracklist (apart from what our ears told us). The result is a thrilling ride, where each part is a reaction to the previous section. Not exactly what we'd call an 'ambient' mix, because it's extremely dynamic. Sections may range from deep sleep sections to exuberant enthusiasm - hence 'Bipolar'.It's like a full life's story comprised in one hour. Nika Roza Danilova has been recording and performing as Zola Jesus for more than a decade. As a classically trained opera singer with a penchant for noisy, avant-garde sounds, she launched her career with a series of lo-fi releases that pitted her soaring vocals against harsh industrial clatter and jittery synths. The signature Zola Jesus sound became more hi-fi as she began to explore her own skewed vision of pop music on releases like Stridulum, Valusia, and Conatus. With the release of Conatus, Danilova was propelled to regular appearances on festival stages all around the world, as well as a special performance at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. That era culminated in the release of Versions, a collection of string quartet interpretations of her most beloved work, conducted by J.G. Thirlwell (Foetus). That album and subsequent tour were followed by her most hi-fi outing to date, Taiga. Now, coinciding with her return to both the Wisconsin woods in which she was raised and her longtime label, Sacred Bones Records, Zola Jesus has produced Okovi, her darkest album yet. It is, in Danilova’s words, “a deeply personal snapshot of loss, reconciliation, and a sympathy for the chains that keep us all grounded to the unforgiving laws of feral nature.” Topics Discussed In This Episode: Depression Dissecting sections of her creative process from an emotional and technical standpoint Creative resourcefulness Identity Her thoughts on constructing honest lyrics Yoshino and Zola Jesus’s collaboration together Kindred spirits in collaborative creative partners Exploring morbid curiosities and ideas surrounded around death Understanding human suffering Collaborating with David Lynch Finding your own path Resilience through failure www.artistdecoded.com www.twitter.com/yoshinostudios

This show features several new releases from March 29. More information about the records is below.*Update!* I think I mentioned in this show that All Eternals Deck was the Mountain Goats third LP, which is obviously incorrect (ouch, indie cred!). What I meant to and should have said was that this is the third LP with a more rock-oriented trio. Sorry, ya'll.Beat City Radio #583 PlaylistDownload show (right-click, save target as): Beat City Radio #583Stream: A Few of This Week's New Releases The Mountain Goats released All Eternals Deck, which takes its name from a fictional set of tarot cards. The album shows that John Darnielle's songwriting is still quite solid and the rhythm section gets a boost from Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster.  Stream the album on NPR's website. Favorite tracks: Damn These Vampires, High Hawk Season, The Autopsy Garland, For Charles Bronson, Birth of Serpents.Hosannas is a duo from Portlandia who create sweeping and beautiful experimental dream pop tinged with cosmic spaghetti western sounds and shoegazing tendencies. They are back with a FREE EP, Thug Life Nicole, that follows the release of their third album, Together late last year. Find out more about the band and download the EP from the link above.Bonus mp3s:   Hosannas - Obsolete PeopleHosannas - Walroos From the Moon Duo website: "Moon Duo was formed by Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada in San Francisco in 2009. Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, and vocals, the Duo plays space against form to create a primeval sound experience." This experimental psychedelic duo dropped Mazes this week on Sacred Bones Records.Bonus mp3s:Moon Duo - MazesMoon Duo - ScarsMoon Duo - When You Cut The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a shoegazing bliss/gliss rock quartet from Brooklyn, NY. They released their debut self-titled album a couple of years ago to much critical acclaim. That record was very much rooted in the 80s, with elements of post-punk, dream pop, twee, and the C86 sound. It was a very saccharine heart-on-the-sleeve album, but balanced those elements with some darker tones and distortion. The sophomore album, Belong out on Slumberland Records, builds on the first album's elements and takes them further with a BIG and slick wall of sound production style, courtesy of Flood and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode). The overall sound of this album is early 90s guitar pop-rock, though there are some synth-washed tracks that recall Modern English and The Cure. Belong is a big-sounding, shimmering and slick, heart-breakingly blissful record that glides along beautifully and is enjoyable, though cloying at times. Favorite tracks: Heart in Your Heartbreak, My Terrible Friend,Anne With an E, The Body.Bonus mp3:The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - I Wanna Go All the Way (B-side of the Belong 7" vinyl single). We also played a new one from Swedish indie rockers Peter Bjorn and John's new album, Gimme Some and a couple from Dirty Beaches. We'll feature Dirty Beaches in another post.Enjoy!Bonus Video: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Young Adult Friction from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart out on Slumberland Records in 2009.
