Send us a Question!MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss Tomie, another early Junji Ito live-action adaptation! The two talk about the film's varying quality, constantly curious ideas, and toxic-femininity; something they've rarely seen explored in film. Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 24-minutes discussing about Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie teaser trailer as well as responding to the surprisingly divisive online reaction. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Kathryn & Melvin have both read the Tomie manga, but only Kathryn has finished reading it, and the two share their thoughts.Kathryn, "[Tomie] is a good highlight reel of Tomie the manga."Tomie is playing with a lot of ideas, but very few feel fully realized.Perhaps the main idea explored in Tomie, which is inherent to the character, is toxic femininity, and a woman's ability to use their feminine power for their own desires.Toxic gender ideologies deny the truth of image-bearing; that both man AND woman bear God's image when in healthy relationship (platonic and/or romantic).Talking about Tomie as a character.Talking about flowers, and the choice to reveal Tomie's face later in the film.Trying to understand the ending, which introduces some complex ideas to an already layered film.Cross-examining Tomie and Tsukiko; what they share, how they differ, and forgiveness (or, the lack thereof). At Kawaii-Fi we wouldn't describe ourselves as "sporty" people - shocking we know! But every now and then, a sports anime will bring people in from all areas of the anime fandom. We've seen it happen with Haikyu and Slam Dunk, and we may have another one to add to the list.100 Meters dropped on Netflix late last year after a widely praised run at film festivals around the globe. The Yeti is back! Finally after an extended absence for a lupus flare I'm back and what an episode to return with because I've got returning guest comics writer Pornsak Pichetshote and first timer legendary comics artist Rafael Albuquerque on with me to discuss their new DC Comics project Absolute Green Arrow. Highlights from the episode include a deep dive into how the creative team is reimagining Oliver Queen not just as an archer but as a mysterious figure in a Giallo inspired murder mystery where corrupt billionaires are the targets, how Scott Snyder and DC editorial granted total creative freedom to reinvent the Green Arrow mythology from scratch, the visual look of the book influenced by 70s thriller textures and a vintage comics like Daredevil providing the feel Rafael and colorist Marcelo Maiolo are bringing to the page, the mystery of Absolute Black Canary or Dinah Lance and why she is the real heart of the story, and the impact of masters of horror comics like Junji Ito and Bernie Wrightson on the series. Follow Pornsak on Instagram Rafael's website Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story Season 2 Absolute Green Arrow from the publisher WITHOUT THE TRICK ARROWS... WITHOUT THE MONEY... WITHOUT MERCY... WHAT'S LEFT IS THE ABSOLUTE HUNTER! A serial killer is slaughtering corrupt billionaires. The only clue to their identity is the mysterious green arrows sticking out of his victims' corpses. Executive protection specialist Dinah Lance, a.k.a. Absolute Black Canary, is one of the people tasked to uncover this murderer's identity as she investigates her suspects... all familiar DC archers uniquely linked to a recently murdered Oliver Queen. I Know What You Did Last Summer for billionaires, Absolute Green Arrow reimagines the Emerald Archer's mythos into a dangerous, urban horror murder-mystery by Eisner winners Pornsak Pichetshote (Dead Boy Detectives, Infidel) and Rafael Albuquerque (Detective Comics, American Vampire). I picked up Junji Ito's Black Paradox again the other day, and what stayed with me wasn't just the horror—it was the structure underneath it. The sense that even our attempts to escape ourselves don't actually take us out of the loop… they just reorganize it.In this episode, I use the story as a way into something I see all the time in the therapy room: the difference between wanting to die and wanting relief from being who you are. Drawing on Richard Boothby's rethinking of the death drive, Lacan's notion of objet a, and Todd McGowan's work on capitalism and desire, I explore how what feels like an exit often becomes a new object that keeps us moving.Even death, in this story, becomes something that can be extracted, priced, and sold. And Pitan—the most unsettling figure in the narrative—ends up embodying a kind of subject without lack. Not trapped in the loop, but perfectly adapted to it.This isn't an episode that offers resolution. It's an attempt to stay with a harder question: what do you do with a desire for an outside… when there is no outside?Maybe the work isn't to escape the loop.Maybe it's to start seeing it more clearly.

Si parte dalle news con Eternal Afternoon e Steel Ball Run, per poi approfondire il genere horror e le sue evoluzioni tra Occidente e Giappone. The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All on netti-ilmiönä alkanut Sumiko Arain teiniromanssi, jossa rakkaus länsimaiseen rockmusiikkiin yhdistää kaksi pintapuolisesti hyvin erilaista tyttöä. --- Kommentoi | Bluesky | Mastodon | X | Threads | Instagram --- (01:15) – KUULUMISET: BUSHIDO – Bushido saapuu elokuvateattereihin 17. huhtikuuta – Traileri (YouTube) (03:49) – KINIOTO: ESITTELY – The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All – Sarjan ensimmäinen luku: Mitsuki tietää, että Aya ei tiedä, että levykaupan myyjä ei olekaan poika (kuva) – Uudet sivut voi edelleen lukea Sumiko Arain X-tililtä ja Instagramista – Aya Oosawa ja Mitsuki Koga (kuva) (06:39) – KINIOTO: KERRONTA, RAKENNE JA MUSIIKKI – Joskus seuraavan luvun alku kertaa mihin edellisessä luvussa päädyttiin (kuva) – Junji Ito, jonka töistä puhuimme jaksossa 30 – Sarjan virallinen X-tili – Nuoruuden tuulahdus pyyhkii keski-ikäisten hahmojen yli (kuva) (16:56) – KINIOTO: AYA JA MITSUKI – Jakso 91, jossa puhuimme sarjasta lukujonossa – Jakso 83, jossa puhuimme sarjasta Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You – Aya näkee tekemänsä soittolistan Mitsukin puhelimessa… (kuva) – …ja ärsyyntyy tämän epärehellisyydestä (kuva) – Tehokas anteeksipyyntö (kuva) –Jakso 121, jossa puhuimme pääaihesarjan In So Deep, It's Love Already yhteydessä siitä, miten fanin ja idolin romanssit ovat nyt trendikäs aihe – Tamon's B-Side – Aya on aina ajatellut, että musiikki-innostus on vain hänen oma juttunsa, jota kukaan ei ole kiinnostunut jakamaan… (kuva) – …mutta Mitsukista hän löytää ystävän jakamaan musiikki-innostuksen (kuva) – Mitsukin kouluminä ja arkiminä (kuva) – Jakso 69, jossa puhuimme sarjan I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend into a Girl käännösongelmista – Aya osaa tarvittaessa suuttua (kuva) – Kun Mitsuki alkaa hengata Ayan kaveriporukassa, puhe kääntyy useammin musiikkiin (kuva) (40:14) – KINIOTO: MUUT HAHMOT – Narita alkaa shipata Mitsukia ja Ayaa (kuva) – Mitsukin Joe-sedän ja tämän exä Kannan välit ovat ystävälliset mutta hieman hankalat (kuva) (47:38) – KINIOTO: VISUAALINEN TYYLI – My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness – Transfusions-nettisarjakuvassa punainen on aina punaista, mutta muuten sarjakuva on mustavalkoinen – Silmät säihkyvät vihreinä ja puhekuplat korostuvat vihreää taustaa vasten etenkin emotionaalisesti erityisen tärkeiden reaktioiden ja repliikkien aikana (kuva) – Mitsukin kouluminän kasvot on värjätty vihreällä ja tausta valkoisella, ja arkiminän kasvot taas toisinpäin (kuva) – Ahdistavissa kohtauksissa vihreää saatetaan käyttää hyvin niukasti (kuva) – Kun Ayan kaveri tajuaa, että levykaupan myyjä onkin Mitsuki, ruudut muodostavat yhteen kytketyt palapelin palat (kuva) – Tapahtumat näytetään kuvaamaan asetetun kännykän ruudun kautta (kuva) – Jakso 114, jossa puhuimme Witch Hat Atelier -sarjan tekijä Kamome Shirahaman haastatteluista ja kolmiulotteisista sivusommitteluista (57:42) – KINIOTO: JULKAISU – Alkuperäisen nettijulkaisun vihreä (vasemmalla) ja Yen Pressin pokkarijulkaisun vihreä (oikealla) ovat hieman erit (kuva) – Pystysuuntaista ladontaa on aika paljon, eikä se näytä kauhean hyvältä (kuva) (01:04:21) – KINIOTO: SPOILERIOSIO – Muodonmuutos (kuva) – Hime haluaisi saada Mitsukin avulla isältään huomiota (kuva) – Joen ja Kannan välille jäänyt etäisyys (kuva) – Jakso 112, jossa puhuimme sarjasta Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku (01:18:58) – KINIOTO: YHTEENVETO – Pokkareiden lopusta ja esimerkiksi eri kirjakaupoille tehdyistä lisälehdyköistä löytyvät lisämateriaalit ovat osa tarinanrakennusta (kuva) (01:25:13) – MANGAKARTAN ANIMEVUOSI 2025 Innostavimmat suositukset: – The Summer Hikaru Died (Netflix) – Sarja ei ole BL:ää, ja Animatessakin se on seinenhyllyssä (kuva) – Animurot-podcastissa puhuttiin sarjasta jaksossa 74 – Desucon Frostbitessa 2026 sarjan ohjaustekniikat nostettiin luennon aiheeksi (YouTube) – Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami (OceanVeil) – OceanVeil-suoratoistopalvelu – Maaretin blogipostaus sarjasta – Anne Shirley (Crunchyroll) – Vihervaaran Anna -kirjasarja – Vuoden 1979 animesovitus – Takopi's Original Sin (Crunchyroll) – Jakso 120, jossa puhuimme mangasta – City: The Animation (Prime Video) – Arki Ihanat matkailumainnossarjat: – Okitsura (Crunchyroll) – Ihanin ääninäyttelijä Ai Fairouz – Zatsutabi (Crunchyroll) Ihan jees: – Zenshu (Crunchyroll) – Medalist (Disney Plus) – There's No Freaking Way I'll Be Your Lover! In this episode of the Psyche Podcast, I bring together philosopher Eugene Thacker's In the Dust of This Planet and Junji Ito's Uzumaki to explore a deeper, colder form of horror—one that isn't psychological, symbolic, or easily explained.Thacker writes about the “world-without-us”: a reality that exists beyond human meaning, care, or control. In Uzumaki, that idea takes shape as a spiral—an impersonal force that reshapes bodies, infects a town, and quietly dismantles the assumption that the world is organized around us.This is an episode about cosmic horror, dread, and the unsettling beauty of patterns that exceed human understanding. We explore why Uzumaki feels so disturbing, how horror can function as a form of philosophy, and what it means to encounter a world that doesn't offer reassurance or redemption. If you're interested in philosophical horror, cosmic pessimism, or stories that linger long after they end, this conversation is an invitation to sit with discomfort—and listen closely to what it reveals.
From the desk of Pete: If you tuned in last week for the conclusion of an historic Month of Action, you heard Charlie go "Missing in Action" at the end of the show. Anna and Pete pooled their resources together and executed a worldwide man hunt for their fearless leader. Our first stop was the Land of the Rising Sun, JAPAN! Ultimately, we came up empty handed, however there were signs of Charlie having been in the quiet town of Kurôzu-Cho. We found his Month of Action bandana in a washing machine, but it had been twisted into a horrific spiral shape, or an uzumaki as the locals explained. The word uzumaki reminded Pete of a movie so before we continued our search, we took a break and invited Daniel from the Geeks with Beards podcast over to cover a supremely weird J-Horror film based off a Junji Ito manga called Uzumaki. You better tune in to this episode because you won't believe your ears.
