For this season finale, we're getting spooky. In this episode, I'll be discussing media that truly frightened me–not just jump scares. I'll be talking about media like Skinamarink (2022), Ethel Cain's Perverts, Junji Ito's Manga, and more. I'll also be discussing the ways that media creates a scary atmosphere. What makes something scary? If you like horror movies and are fascinated by how they create fear, this episode is for you. ¡Konnichiwa, estimados nakamas!
Will you survive the world of spirals? In this episode on Jelly Jam Spam, Jelly Joel and Julia Jam explore the horrifying world of Junji Ito, from his smaller works all the way to his most well-known series, Uzumaki. As we spiral down through his prolific career, we'll discuss the artistic process, how we feel about body horror, and what makes a good adaptation...and a bad one.
As noted in my review for the volume one of The Liminal Zone, first published in English back in 2022, fans of Junji Ito can expect two types of collections these days: freshly translated work from his seemingly bottomless well of content, and brand-new stories. It was firmly in the latter camp, created exclusively for the LINE manga app (which is way more popular than you'd think).
Continuing a year of horror comics, Michael and Jess talk about Richard Sala's Cat Burglar Black and Junji Ito's cat diary, Yon & Mu.

This week on Comics and Chronic the boys make history by covering their first ever manga, the classic Japanese horror manga Uzumaki by Junji Ito. It's Manga and Marijuana! “Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral—the hypnotic secret shape of the world” But first The Costco Guys rise through the hierarchy of pop culture along with The Rizzler by making their AEW debut. Cody gives us his home makeover plans. This is the first manga Jake has ever read. Each story in Uzumaki is more insane than the last. The story is literally a spiral into madness. The book has an anthology feel that ultimately ties together in the end. Cody reveals how he came to own Uzumaki. Is this one of the best horror comics ever made? The boys decide they need to cover more of Something Is Killing The Children. This book is so unsettling that at some points Jake had to put it down. Cody gives his take on the animated Uzumaki on Adult Swim. Has Cody infected Jake with his snail like slowness? What sick scientific experiments was Anthony up to in 1st grade? Cody used to pretend to be an apex predator and eat bugs. Uzumaki is an uncomfortable yet engaging read with equal parts body horror, existential dread, and losing one's mind sprinkled throughout. Are the boys going to travel to Hell to rescue Paul Walker? Anthony's Superguy comes out next month! This is a must read for any horror fan or manga reader! Tune in now! DISCLAIMER Our in-person audio was super wonky this time around despite our thorough checks, we tried to clean it up but ultimately decided it would be better to release the episode as is. Thanks for listening if you can bear it. We've been waiting a very long time to watch and review this anime. Junji Ito is a frequent episode topic on OHC, and when a new iteration of Uzumaki was announced, you know we were stoked to see how they would interpret probably the most well-loved JI work. Unfortunately for us, we were super excited to see what they could do, but they really should have kept this one locked up tight in the vault. Join us this week as we review probably the worst retelling of this iconic work. Honestly, the 2001 live-action movie, in all of its campy early CGI glory, is better than this garbage. A long-awaited anime adaptation of Junji Ito's manga Uzumaki has finally arrived, but unfortunately with uneven results. Commissioned by Cartoon Network for Adult Swim, Uzumaki suffered serious delays in production and drama with the directors and animation studios. While the art style accurately reflects Ito's original work, the animation beyond the first episode leaves much to be desired and leads to some sequences being goofy instead of scary. For a show that took five years to release just four episodes, only the first one shows the love and care fans expected when viewing the trailers and teaser materials. Welcome to Bite!, the mini-episodes of the Southern Demonology podcast that are all about horror movies. In this episode, JJ breaks down why Uzumaki meaning "spiral" in Japanese is probably the best horror anime of all time, even with only episode 1 dropping last week, and how it perfectly represents the Lovecraftian horror that just oozes from the art of Japan's premiere mangaka, Junji Ito.Get access to all of Southern Demonology's social media links, episodes, and contact information at https://www.southerndemonology.com Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/southerndemonology. Max has the new Uzumaki Series now running for the next 4 weeks. The Junji Ito manga gets the Anime treatment but not like any I've seen before. In a very living Manga style, Uzumaki episode 1 explores the town of Kurouzu and it's descent into madness over spirals.
