Eric Newman joins us to talk about the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation. The Newman and Fuente families founded this charity in 2001. They planned to build a wing on a school in the Dominican Republic, but ended up building a whole school. It's only grown from there. The Cigar Authority is a member of the United Podcast Network and is recorded live in front of a studio audience at Studio 21 Podcast Cafe upstairs at Two Guys Smoke Shop in Salem, NH
OpusX, Chateau Fuente, Julius Caeser, Cuesta-Rey, shall we go on? You wouldn't have Dominican cigars without the Dominican people. The mountainous agricultural Bonao region of the Dominican Republic, however, suffers from extreme poverty, an inadequate educational system, and poor water quality, which greatly affects people's health. Two giants in premium cigars—Carlos “Carlito” P. Fuente, Jr., chairman of Arturo Fuente Cigars and Eric Newman, president of J.C. Newman Cigar Company—set out to change all that. In the D.R., the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation (CFCF) has funded the creation of a 23-acre campus with a K-12 school, community kitchen, medical and dental clinics, sports facilities, an organic farm and fishery, and local infrastructure improvements for the region. Tony Kattengell, vice president of sales and marketing for The LEAGUE and Dellas Edmisten Jr, global technical manager for Infinera represent CFCF in this interview with Boveda's Drew Emmer. In Episode 12 the Chief Rick Stone and Family Charitable Foundation examines the case of perhaps THE VERY FIRST AMERICAN CASUALTY OF THE INVASION OF SICILY IN World War II. Seaman First Class Paul Bernard Wilson WAS BURIED IN THE SAND ON THE BEACH WHERE HE DIED, ONLY TO BE LOST TO HISTORY SINCE THE DAY OF HIS DEATH on 10 July 1943. Could TWO LONG FORGOTTEN FINGERPRINTS HOLD THE CLUE TO SOLVING THE CASE…A CASE FILE THAT HAD FBI DIRECTOR J. EDGAR HOOVER’S ORIGINAL SIGNATURE…COULD DIRECTOR HOOVER’S FBI LABORATORY ASSIST US AGAIN 70 YEARS LATER TO BRING HOME THE MISSING SAILOR FROM SICILY? Listen to this episode of NO HOME FOR HEROES to find out.
Episode 11 has all the components of a New York Times best seller. The friendship of two Marines who had the irony of being the last combat casualties AFTER the official end of a major battle. A lost cemetery for almost three quarters of a century that was full of missing American servicemen...An idiotic government policy that prevented their discovery...A map with the famous “X marks the spot” just like the old pirate stories of buried treasure...And a Marine’s help from beyond the grave to find his long lost buddy. All of that, and more, is included in today's episode, file number 0284, from the investigative case files of the Chief Rick Stone and Family Charitable Foundation.
Episode 9 is a very, very special edition of NO HOME FOR HEROES. It is our honor and our privilege to introduce you to a 97 year old Marine who describes in his own words how he helped bury a fellow Marine in the sand after the Battle of Tarawa. The buried Marine was lost for almost 75 years until our good friend, Sergeant Edward Gazel, provided the essential clue for investigators of the Chief Rick Stone and Family Charitable Foundation to identify the burial location of CPL Claire Eulin Goldtrap of Hobart, Oklahoma, Missing In Action.since 20 November 1943. While the title of Episode 9 is "Goldy Goes Home", the title could easily be "We All Pray To the Same God, Son". Listen to the podcast to find out exactly why this title would be equally appropriate. Thanks to Sergeant Gazell, GOLDY GOES HOME...finally!
Episode 8 is part love story and part war story. We explore File Number 0191 from the investigative case files of the Chief Rick Stone and Family Charitable Foundation regarding a 25 year old lumber mill worker from Oregon who became a combat veteran in the steamy jungles of Guadalcanal in World War II. After being shipped with his unit to New Zealand for a period of rest, refit, and retraining, our young Private First Class found love in this far off land. Not wanting to wait for the war to end, he married his 18 year old New Zealand sweetheart only a few weeks before shipping out again. PFC Victor Harold Feldner met his doom on the tiny island of Tarawa in the South Pacific. Hear how a daughter has waited her whole life for her father's return and the Foundation's investigative conclusions about his loss and recovery location.
Episode 6 explores File Number 0414 from the Chief Rick Stone and Family Charitable Foundation's investigative case files of missing American service members. It is the case of Private Edwin William Jordan from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who convinced his father to go along with the desire of a fifteen year old boy to enlist in the United States Marine Corps and the tireless efforts of an aunt to seek his release from combat duty in the South Pacific. Private Jordan stormed the beach at Tarawa in November 1943 and vanished into history until his accidental discovery in the most unlikely of circumstances over seventy years after his loss...It's an amazing story with a surprising twist in another of history's military mysteries!
Episode 5 discusses of the case of Private First Class Alfred Edwards from Oklahoma. PFC Edwards was one of over 500 MIA's from the Battle of Tarawa in 1943. His family requested an investigation by the Chief Rick Stone and Family Charitable Foundation regarding his fate and, thanks to a federal lawsuit filed by the Foundation under the Freedom of Information, documents were found that provided the last remaining piece of the puzzle to solve the mystery. And, in an incredible surprise bonus, Foundation investigators can now pinpoint the exact location of PFC Edwards' remains...but you'll never be able to guess where!
Episode 2 described the Battle of Tarawa fought between Japan and the United States during World War II. Over 1,000 U.S. servicemen were killed during the battle but the bodies of only 532 were recovered from 41 different cemeteries on Tarawa after the war, including 282 who were initially unidentified and classified as "Unknown". The episode discusses the continuing efforts to locate, recover, and identify over 500 missing American servicemen from this battle including the efforts of the Chief Rick Stone and Family Charitable Foundation to help identify over 100 "Unknowns" from the Battle of Tarawa who are buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (also known as the "Punchbowl") in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Episode 1 describes Chief Rick Stone's appointment to the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) as a member of the Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, Intelligence Directorate. JPAC's mission was to locate, recover, and identify missing American service men and women from our past wars. Other items of discussion in this podcast: 1) Use of the Random Incident Statistical Correlation System (RISC) to compare those buried as "Unknowns" with MIA's 2) Primary investigative responsibility for the Battle of Tarawa, Pearl Harbor, and other losses 3) Government investigations into JPAC managerial and leadership dysfunction 4) Whistleblower activities 5) Concept of Ethics 6) Continuing MIA investigations by the Chief Rick Stone and Family Charitable Foundation
