Witness testimony has resumed in the bribery and racketeering trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and co-defendant Michael McClain. Former State Rep. Scott Drury, D-Highwood, returned to the stand for additional cross-examination Wednesday morning after beginning his testimony on Tuesday. Drury and Madigan defense attorney Todd Pugh had several combative exchanges over a variety of issues. U.S. government prosecutor Amarjeet Bhachu said the prosecution planned to call utility company executive Scott Vogt next, followed by former State Rep, Lou Lang, D-Skokie. Lang was on Madigan's leadership team before stepping down in 2019 amid harassment allegations.
Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn joins Patti Vasquez for a conversation about the Illinois Property Tax Relief Amendment, which is on the 2024 ballot. Quinn called the nonbinding referendum "a good chance for people to send a message that we need fundamental tax reform and tax relief for people who live from paycheck to paycheck," adding that "It takes Illinois' upside tax system, where the millionaires get the breaks and everyday people get the bills -- we want to change that around, and we can do it at the ballot box." Catch "Driving It Home with Patti Vasquez" weekdays from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Central on WCPT (heartlandsignal.com/programs/driving-it-home).
Tuesday is Day One of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan's and co-defendant Michael McClain's trial on racketeering and bribery charges. U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois John Lausch announced a federal jury's indictment of Madigan on March 2, 2022. “The indictment accuses Madigan of leading, for nearly a decade, a criminal enterprise whose purpose was to enhance Madigan's political power and financial well-being while also generating income for his political allies and associates,” Lausch stated. Illinois state Sen. Andrew Chesney, R-Freeport, issued a statement before the upcoming trial.
In an October 1 interview, former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn talked to Joan Esposito about the nonbinding Illinois Property Tax Relief Amendment, which is on the 2024 ballot. He explained: "Basically, it calls for a 3 percent surcharge on the income of millionaires in Illinois, that anybody who declares more than a million dollars in income in a particular year would pay a 3 percent surcharge, but that money would be used to give property tax relief to 3 million Illinois homeowners, people who live from paycheck to paycheck. This is tax reform at its best, in my opinion." Quinn also talked about his work creating a referendum on whether the Bears should get tax dollars for the team's Soldier Field multibillion-dollar renovation. Catch "Joan Esposito: Live, Local and Progressive" weekdays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Central on WCPT (heartlandsignal.com/wcpt820).
Former Illinois Congressman and Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, a lifelong Republican, joins Joan Esposito to talk about the work he's doing to support Vice President Kamala Harris and defeat Donald Trump in the November election. "I told the Harris campaign I'll go wherever you want me to go," LaHood said. "I'm happy to speak publicly, on the radio, on television, before any group or any news outlet.” LaHood calls himself a "very proud" Republican but has not supported Trump in any of his three presidential campaigns; he endorsed Joe Biden in 2020. He says that while some Republicans he's talked to are disappointed that he is publicly supporting the Harris-Walz ticket, he knows many "who will not vote for either Trump or Harris but will be standing at the ready to rebuild the Republican Party, and I'll be there with them." Catch "Joan Esposito: Live, Local and Progressive" weekdays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Central on WCPT (heartlandsignal.com/wcpt820).
In an August 28th interview with WCPT's Joan Esposito, former Illinois Senator Carol Moseley Braun talked about the energy and excitement surrounding Kamala Harris's presidential run and what Harris needs to do to win in November. "I would just tell her, stick to your guns, be clear with the American people about what it is you'd like to do as president . . . and I think that bringing out the substance will be the strong suit that she can play in what will be, no doubt, a very rigorous campaign," she said. Moseley Braun, the first Black woman elected to the Senate, also addressed the racist and sexist attacks that have been directed at Harris, including former President Trump's claim, delivered last month at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago, that Harris only recently "became a Black person." "When you heard that, what went through your mind?" Esposito asked. "That he'd lost his mind," Moseley Braun answered, adding that "people who like [Harris's] candidacy and want to see her elected president of the United States need to weigh in and start pushing back on this kind of foolishness." The former senator also spoke about her history with President Joe Biden, recalling a time when Biden came to Chicago in a successful effort to persuade her to join the Senate Judiciary Committee that he then chaired. "I would follow Joe Biden through the gates of hell," Moseley Braun told WCPT, "because he's such an ethical, such a good man." Moseley Braun said she was surprised that Biden ended his bid for re-election and believes he will "go down in history as one of our best presidents. He slugged it out, he kept his campaign promises, he did what he said he was going to do and now he's stepping aside, and he stepped aside for Kamala and I could not be more pleased," she said.
