Jérôme Colin et Miguel Allo traversent les États-Unis d'Est en Ouest. De New York à Los Angeles. Mike Carpenter welcomes old friend Lon Tay to help celebrate the release of The 200 Level book! They discuss the writing process, the last 30+ years of Illini basketball, and share memories and experiences along the way. Then, they are joined by an unplanned surprise guest - Dee Brown! - who helps to close things out.
Lanni Brown grew up surrounded by basketball. Her father, Dee Brown, was an NBA legend with the Boston Celtics. Her sister is currently playing in the WNBA and her brother is a D1 Basketball player. While she also found success in the sport, she faced lots of comparisons with her family, struggled to separate her self identity from her performance and ultimately realized that she was “not feeling basketball.” Her transition to the D1 level exacerbated her struggle as she felt different from her teammates because she didn't love her sport and even felt selfish, ungrateful and guilty that she was getting a scholarship despite not being fully invested. Lanni chose to shift her mindset and focus on energy, positivity and enjoying the moments and making an impact in her own way. Since her competitive career has ended, she is pursuing a Master's at Jacksonville University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with the plan to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology She is combining her personal experiences and education to better support student athletes as an advocate, ambassador and future clinician. @alanni.noelle
Dee Brown was a 12-year NBA legend and member on the 1990's Boston Celtics all decade team. While so many young kids dream of the NBA, Dee Brown just wanted to use basketball to get a free college education. By creating a process, locking in and having no fear of failing, he found himself as the 19th overall pick by the Boston Celtics in 1990. Having the opportunity to play alongside legends like Larry Bird, he learned how to focus on solutions vs successes, apply mindfulness to sport and the power of information, motivation and inspiration. By mastering these concepts, he was also able to build a level of confidence and trust in himself to make up an iconic dunk on the spot that was memorialized and recreated years later. Through his experiences as a player, coach, parent and now an administrator at Jacksonville U, Dee Brown shares the “B principles” that are necessary for a championship culture in sports, school and life. @deebrown_og
The Sons of UCF spoke with former UCF Baseball Coach Jay Bergman in a wide ranging interview covering his career with the Knights. Bergman was named coach in 1983, taking over a program that was behind in facilities, lacked a recruiting budget, and without a culture of consistent success. Over the next 26 years, Bergman helped to usher UCF Baseball into a new era, buttressed by the performances of MLB caliber players such as Chad Mottola, Justin Pope, Dee Brown, Jason Arnold, Mike Maroth, and a young Rich Wallace (now the current UCF Head Baseball Coach). Bergman's tenure with UCF came to an end in 2008 amidst allegations of misconduct, and he has largely steered clear of UCF since. However, with the appointment of Wallace as head coach, Bergman has had an opportunity to re-join the Knight community he served for so long. Dee Brown joins the show and opens up on a turbulent 90's decade in Boston. Brown is the lone Celtic that played Larry Bird and Reggie Lewis AND played for coach Rick Pitino. In this episode, we begin in 1990, when a rookie Brown becomes a Celtic in the midst of a major transition for Boston. After winning three championships and making eight straight Conference Finals in the 80's, Boston lost in the first round in 1988 and 1989. Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish's championship window was closing, but a young phenom, Reggie Lewis, seemed ready to take the torch and define a new era. In 1991 and 1992, Lewis averaged 25 points per game in the playoffs and the Celtics won over 50 games each year. But Boston's seemingly perfect bridge between the Bird and Lewis era suddenly collapsed in the summer of 1993. Lewis' 1993 season was cut short after he mysteriously collapsed in a playoff game. Shortly after the season, doctors cleared him, but as he was training at Brandeis University, he suffered cardiac arrest and died. He was just 27 years old.In the years following Lewis' death, the Celtics tanked out. They failed to win over 35 games from 1994-1996, and in 1997, they went 15-67, by far the worst season in franchise history.Enter Rick Pitino in the Spring of 1997, who was named the savior, but disaster would turn out to be the more accurate label. Midway through Pitino's first season as Head Coach and Team President, Brown was packaged in the infamous Chauncey Billups for Kenny Anderson trade. We hope you enjoy this episode.
