Recorded November 30, 2023. A lecture by Dr Orla Fitzpatrick (Ireland's Border Culture Project, Trinity College Dublin) as part of the Medical and Health Humanities Seminar Series in association with Trinity Long Room Hub. During the 1860s, photographic studios such as Allen of Westland Row, Foster of Westmoreland Street and Lawrence of Sackville Street provided the source imagery for articles in the Dublin Quarterly Journal of Medical Science. In an era before the advent of photo-mechanical reproduction, the images were published as woodcuts or lithographs or sometimes original prints were tipped into the journal. The paper will also survey the reviews and references to international photographically illustrated publications which appeared in the Dublin press. Dr Orla Fitzpatrick is a Research Fellow working with Professor Eve Patten, Trinity College Dublin and Garrett Carr, Queen's University Belfast, on a HEA Shared Island North-South Research Programme project ‘Ireland's Border Culture: Literature, Arts, and Policy.' Dr Fitzpatrick attained a PhD from Ulster University on the topic of modernity, modernism and Irish photography, 1922 to 1949. Her book Lost Ireland was published by Rizzoli and Pavilion in 2021. She curated 'Imaging Conflict: photographs from revolutionary era Ireland,' a major exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland which opened in October 2022. This looked at the production and consumption of photographic images in conflict situations.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Tyler and Garrett from the band Royal Sugar. It was a delight to get to know this talented duo and chat about pretty much everything under the sun.For more about Royal Sugar, click here!Royal Sugar Insta: @royalsugarbandRoyal Sugar FB: @royalsugarbandBio: Meet the future of rock 'n' roll: Nashville's Royal Sugar. The glam group is the most exciting new band to emerge on the scene, a mix of ‘70s and ‘80s nostalgia made fresh by their penchant for modern pop. In concert, they channel everything from Def Leppard's rawness to Jim Morrison's swaggering flamboyance. Royal Sugar's Tyler Cohenour (frontman) and Garrett Carr (bass/vocals) first met in college in Florida, the same state they both hail from. Growing up, both musicians had a penchant for the type of rock music their dads raised them on, like AC/DC. Upon meeting and becoming friends, they realized they may be musical soulmates. “First couple times we played, we're like ‘There's chemistry there. We should run with this and see what happens,'” Carr recalls. In 2021, Royal Sugar made their debut with a cover of Harry Styles' “Medicine.” They attended the pop star's show in Nashville back during one of his first solo tours and were blown away by the track, which the former One Direction member has played live frequently but never released officially. Royal Sugar had dropped a cover of “Medicine” on TikTok that blew up so they decided to record it. But for their first original song, they led off with “California Nightmare” in July 2022. It's a proper introduction to their shimmering fusion of the past and the present that positions them firmly in rock's future. It was also the first song they were able to write in person when Cohenour returned to Nashville. “Ty's a super talented producer, so he'll get in there and build out these tracks,” Carr says of his bandmate. “He's got a really great ear for how melodies come together so he'll usually get the structure and the bones and then we'll go back and forth on arrangements. It's definitely a collaboration, based off Ty's vision for the initial concept.” -- Bio Written by Brittany Spanos So grateful for all the listeners! Northern Ireland occupies a strange position within the Brexit debate. It is at once at the centre and at the periphery of the constitutional uncertainty and political crisis Brexit has created. Poorly understood in Britain even amongst the most well informed, the political future of those living on the island of Ireland has been thrown into huge doubt by the 2016 referendum. This week, to kick off a special Summer Season we're excited to share a two-part live episode. In October 2018, Rebekah and Conor invited four special guests to join them for the first live episode of The Infinite City podcast, recorded in front of an audience at the Sonic Lab in Belfast. This live episode was the closing event of Open House Belfast, an architecture festival organised by PLACE that invites the public inside the city's best buildings, engineering projects and artists' studios. After a weekend of building tours, site visits, talks and artist performances, it was great to sit down with people who have studied the city (both Belfast and cities more broadly) to talk about urbanism in Belfast and beyond. Our venue was the amazing Sonic Lab at Queen's University. We had four guest interviewees, including the writer Darran Anderson and the architect Agustina Martire, both of whom who you'll hear in part 2. But first, in this episode, Aisling O'Beirn discusses her artistic work on the politics of place through site-specific projects in Belfast, and writer Garrett Carr, author of The Rule of the Land: Walking Ireland's Border, tells us about his experience making maps in the edgelands and subverting official mapped spaces. Plus, a reading by the writer Eunice Yeates and a performance by Mark McCambridge, who makes music as Arborist. The Infinite City is a project by PLACE. Donegal is an Irish county where silence is a virtue. You can find it in the desolate landscape, the big skies and far horizons - but silence can be found in the people too. Maybe it's discretion or reticence. It could be shyness or a kind of wisdom. So when radical free-thinking commune, The Atlantis Foundation, set up home in the remote Donegal village of Burtonport in the mid-1970s, it seemed like an unlikely choice of location. Led by charismatic Englishwoman Jenny James and inspired by an experimental brand of counter-cultural psychology, the foundation practised 'primal scream' therapy. This was about letting it all out, yelling; shouting; shrieking to release deep rooted fears in the most challenging and visceral way. The locals simply called them the Screamers. Author and Donegal native Garrett Carr was a boy when he first heard of the Screamers. His family would lower their voices when mentioning them. While he found the name unnerving, Garrett was intrigued. On the coast near his home, he liked to imagine he could hear their cries echoing across the water. Now Garrett is returning to Donegal to find out who the Screamers were, what they wanted and if they ever managed to find it. Most of all he wants to know what happened when the quiet restraint of his local community was confronted by the outward abandonment of the Atlantis Foundation. Garrett is going home to discover what happens when silence meets scream. Producer: Conor Garrett.

And yet still drugs, guns, money and people continue to move north and south. Israel has been building its own separation barrier since the turn of the century, but Dorit Rabinyan is more interested in psychological barriers that drive Palestinians and Israelis apart. The historian Tom Holland looks back at the successes and failures of wall-building from Offa's Dyke to Hadrian's Wall and asks whether they work more as statements of power than as insurmountable barriers between people.
