In this weeks-late release (blame Mr. Flounce) we ask: Is it ever a good idea to fire someone for saying crazy, wrong, and/or threatening things in public? Nina would like to always say no, but even she admits that in some occupations, such as medical care, stating you want certain ethnic groups to die is grounds for dismissal. But most canceling is motivated a lust for revenge, not safety, despite protestations of “accountability” and “consequences”. We also discuss a very bad spider bite, distracting kittens, taglines, Groypers, Jimmy Kimmel, misinformation, moral outrage, Schadenfreude, gay vs homosexual vs queer, and Hey Zeus!Links:Little Britain “I'm a Laydee!”: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2qahpmDid Jimmy Kimmel fire his announcer for not getting a covid vaccine? https://www.facebook.com/terrencekwilliams/posts/jimmy-kimmel-fired-dicky-barrett-after-almost-20-years-of-announcing-the-show-be/1403479137804487/Nick Fuentes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_FuentesLog Cabin Republicans: https://logcabin.org/GOProud: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOProudCori calls Nina's cats gay on X: https://x.com/heterodorx/status/1960836018359427549Nina's wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_PaleyStop Antisemitism X account: https://x.com/StopAntisemitesAccused Rapist Shot by Alleged Victim: https://fox59.com/news/accused-rapist-shot-by-alleged-victim-and-arrested-an-hour-later-in-speedway/ Get full access to Heterodorx Podcast at heterodorx.substack.com/subscribe

Twenty years ago, Sharaa was a devotee of al-Qaeda and detained in an Iraqi prison. For the week ending August 27, 1983, the Billboard Hot 100 was loaded with some of the most iconic songs of the decade. At the top, The Police were wrapping up their legendary run with “Every Breath You Take” before yielding to a new wave of contenders. Hot on their heels, Eurythmics' synth-driven “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” was climbing fast, while Michael Sembello's “Maniac” was burning up the charts thanks to the Flashdance craze. The rest of the Top 10 offered a mix of pure 80s variety: Donna Summer's “She Works Hard for the Money”, Men at Work's “It's a Mistake”, and Taco's quirky “Puttin' on the Ritz” stood alongside classic rock staples like Stevie Nicks' “Stand Back” and Billy Joel's “Tell Her About It.” Further down the list, radio was buzzing with Lionel Richie, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, and Journey—all proving that pop, rock, R&B, and new wave were all thriving together. On this week's podcast, Rob and Dave will dive into the chart and each pick a personal favorite. The fun twist is in their contrasting styles: Dave leans into the big anthems and timeless pop moments, while Rob often digs a little deeper, spotlighting tracks that might not have hit No. 1 but still capture the spirit of the era. Together, they'll break down what makes these songs stand out—whether it's the infectious hooks, the MTV-ready videos, or the way the tracks still hold up decades later. By the end, listeners will get not only a countdown snapshot of late-summer '83, but also two very different perspectives on which hits truly defined that moment. It’s a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Live Aid! Live Aid was grand in scope and ambition. It was largely the brainchild of an unlikely hero, Bob Geldof, the Irish singer who fronted The Boomtown Rats, and who had helped assemble the all-star cast of Band Aid. Watched by 1.5 billion people, Live Aid eventually raised $127 US million for famine relief in Africa. But beyond that, Live Aid was also a cultural touchstone that showed the power of pop music and the determination of millions of people to make a difference in the world. Hours before the event took place, Christopher Ward had a chat with organizer Bob Geldof, who, in his intense way, told of the importance of Live Aid. He disputes the cultural significance in favour of the pragmatic view of delivering much needed aid to African famine relief. It’s an extraordinary interview with a man who is firing on all cylinders, almost to the breaking point. And of course, we also talk about the music, including: Although Geldof didn’t want them in the lineup, Freddie Mercury and the band provided the most memorable 22 minutes of the day, perhaps the best ever performance in music history. U2 – We have the full story of why they played only two songs that day… and how it became a major moment on their road to superstardom. David Bowie’s set was also memorable. But he almost didn’t play that day. And it was all because of a CBC report on the famine. We have the full story. Duran Duran. Simon LeBon made a considerable gaffe during one of their songs. He considers it the most embarrassing moment of his career. Led Zeppelin - why Jimmy Page blamed Phil Collins for Zeppelin’s less than perfect performance. There were also a number of artists who chose not to perform that day, including Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Prince, Culture Club and Huey Lewis. At least two of those acts regretted that decision. And we talk about the importance of Live Aid as a cultural milestone. Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.
Remember, people: there's no easy way out, but you're the best. There's no stopping you. You've got the touch. You've got the power. Oh yeah, it's time once again for some of that amazingly inspirational AOR montage music! Be all you can be, feel the burn, and bring it!This episode is rooted in all 3 categories of lost, forgotten, and should have beens. These bands all provide fist-pumpingly perfect sounds of AOR / Arena Rock gold from the 80s to now. Their music pairs perfectly with action and teen coming-of-age movies and was a big part of our youth!
