In the early 5th century AD, after almost four centuries of iron-fisted Roman rule, the empire in Britain was beginning to fade. Franks, Saxons and Roman usurpers were running rampant. Britannia was on its last legs and in 410 AD, the Britons were told to ‘look to their own defences'.However the story of the fall of Roman Britain is far more complex than the traditional tale of swift Roman withdrawal. In today's episode of The Ancients, Tristan Hughes is joined by Dr Rob Collins and Dr James to journey from Londinium to Hadrians Wall and unpick the ultimate fate of Roman Britannia.Presented by Tristan Hughes. Edited by Aidan Lonergan. The producer is Joseph Knight, the senior producer is Anne-Marie Luff. The Ancients is a History Hit podcast.Enjoy unlimited access to award-winning original TV documentaries that are released weekly and AD-FREE podcasts. Auxiliaries were some of the most important troops in the all-conquering Roman Army. Unlike legionaries, their more heavily-armoured and widely famed counterparts, auxiliaries were recruited from across the Empire and were renowned for their versatility. Deployed as border guards in the far-away hinterlands near Hadrians Wall or as mobile cavalry in the deserts of Parthia, they helped aid the advance of Rome's military behemoth in many more ways than one.In today's episode of The Ancients, Tristan Hughes is joined by historical novelist Ben Kane to delve deeper into the fascinating stories of these soldiers and uncover who they were, where they came from and how important they were to Rome's many conquests. There's a piece of clothing that has a good claim to being a universal garment. It is thousands of years old and yet it featured on the catwalks last year. It's stylish and at the same time the humblest and simplest of garments. It has been worn and enjoyed by rich and poor alike. It has been repurposed and reshaped throughout human history and it has fulfilled many functions. The cloak has kept us good company throughout the centuries, it has marched with armies across plains and deserts, it has been sanctified and worn by saints, and was just as beloved by sinners such as highwaymen. It became the emblem of witches on broomsticks and superheroes flying through the sky. It was worn by hobbits to make them invisible and it is still revered as the ultimate in stylish outerwear by Venetians. This episode of Haptic & Hue looks at the cloak, cape, cope, mantle, and all its other many forms through history and tries to answer the question of why it has proved such a joyful, useful and versatile garment. When visiting the North of Britannia in 122 AD, the Roman Emperor Hadrian Augustus witnessed the aftermath of war between his armies and the savage Picts. In a show of Roman might, he ordered a wall to be built that would separate the Pict tribes from the rest of England. Grand in its design, the wall stretched 80 Roman miles, from coast to coast. In the game, Hadrian's Wall from garphill games and Bobby Hill with art by Sam Phillips, it's your job to spend 6 years building and improving a 1-mile section of the impressive megastructure. each year you receive resources which you must spend wisely to make your mile castle prosper and repel the pictish attacks. Although it is an intimidating game out of the box it is quick to learn and forgiving despite its complexity. If you enjoy games such as Dinosaur Island Roar and Write, or Raiders of Scythia this game might just be the perfect addition to your collection.

Hale Hale, hearty listeners! You have answered the sphinx's riddles, donned the Wadget, the all seeing eye, and discovered the Lyre of Orpheus, alit in the sacred temple of Abydos by the starlight of the constellation Lyra itself. As you strum the lyre's silver strings, a 7th dimensional tone turns the locks etched into the walls, held aloft by the lion goddesses Sekhmet and Bastet for centuries in living stone. Granite walls shimmer and slide, revealing the golden portal to the solar system of Vega, home of the Lion Angels. Yeah, verily, you have discovered the legendary Lion's Gate! Are you brave enough to step through? Welcome to Post Relevant Podcast Super Mega Episode 20 - The King's Chamber part 3 - Thru the Lion's Gate! This 3 hour episode is a culmination of a years worth of podcasts dedicated to unveiling the mysteries behind the film "Under the Silver Lake" and exploring the larger mythological themes to which the film alludes. Join host Phil Ristaino, along with his guests mycelium aficionado Mark Ristaino and artist Carl Ristaino (host of the podcast "Welcome to the Art Shed) as they dig up mushrooms and follow a trail of golden teachers past Hadrians Wall to forge a path through the Egyptian underworld and up into the Great Pyramid of Giza itself. Jumping off from the scene in "Under the Silver Lake" where the main character Sam is confronted about dog biscuits by the Homeless King, this episodes begins with the original song "Someday," co-written by Phil, and a reminiscence of early 80s Cheech and Chong, leading into fully-musically-scored conversations about growing Lion's Mane mushrooms, walking across England, the elegance of the mycelium underground network, panspermia, the genius of 16th century Hermeticist Gordiano Bruno, the conspiracy of Gordon Wasson introducing psychedelic mushrooms into American society in the 20th century, and Mark's adventures at Burning Man. The episode is framed by chapters 4-8 of the King's Chamber, which honor the legends of the Egyptian gods Isis and Osiris and the Great Pyramid's connection to the constellation Orion and the star Sirius. The show eventually culminates with the brand new original song "Thru the Lion's Gate" and Phil's story of his experience taking Ayahuasca. Its a super-mega-episode fit to bust and kick up the mythological dust! Follow our footprints...thru...the Lion's....Gate.... In AD122 following the orders of the Emperor Hadrian, work began to protect the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire. Hadrian's Wall was more than just a barricade. Stretching almost 80 miles from coast to coast and featuring mile castles, barracks, forts, ramparts and settlements it is testimony to the vision and skill of the Roman Empire. As the wall approaches its 1900 Anniversary in 2022, Open Country heads to Northumberland to explore our relationship with walls and their importance with an archaeologist, artist, naturalist and drystone waller. Produced by Sarah Blunt for BBC Audio in Bristol. For more information about Hadrians Wall 1900 Anniversary https://hadrianswallcountry.co.uk/hadrianswall1900
In 410 the desperate citizens of the Roman province of Britannia sent the Emperor a plea for help against increasing attacks from pirates and the Picts from beyond Hadrians Wall. The Emperor, Honorius sent them a simple reply which basically said "You are on your own."Britain descended into chaos - "The Dark Ages"The urban sophistication of the Roman years was abandoned, the land was ruled by warlords. And into this chaos arrived a group of invaders turned settlers - the Anglo Saxons. This is the story of how they tried to establish themselves on the island and how the locals fought back. It is the story of legendary warriors like King Arthur and real warriors like Urien of Rheged.Legends and truths end up mixed together in "The Dark Ages."Join my Supporter's ClubSupport the show

...in which we head to the Cumbrian borderlands with long-time Roman authority David Breeze for a virtual stroll along Hadrian's Wall. As we wander west from the village of Gilsland towards airy Craggle Hill, we deep-dive into Emperor Hadrian's era of pragmatic consolidation; we learn how his vision changed as the Wall's construction progressed; we ponder why threats from across the Solway never materialised; and we discover why the Wall was not the end of Empire – but merely the base of a vast infrastructure extending north. In this podcast we're walking with Neil alongside the largest Roman artefact in the whole world, Hadrian's Wall, the boundary of Empire. And we comes to a stop at a stretch of the Wall called Sycamore Gap, where one of the most beautiful trees in the British Isles stands.Over 70 miles long, Hadrian's Wall is an incredible feat of engineering. Interspersed with milecastles, barracks, forts and settlements, it's a formidable wall dividing the long island into North and South. The Romans took around 6 years to complete the wall and it was built before there were any such people called the Scots or the English. The sheer ambition and hard work needed to construct it shows just how serious the Romans were about owning the British Isles.Check out the Podcast Instagram Account - Neil Oliver Love Letteremail: history@neiloliverloveletter.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Today we're chatting with one of my good mates in the adventure scene Olie Hunter Smart. Olie's most recent adventure involved him walking the length of India, which is over 4,000km by the way, retracing Ghandi's steps, exploring the theme of India's Road to Independence from Britain. But he's also travelled the length of the Amazon river, first trekking 400 miles through the Peruvian Andes before hopping in a Kayak for the next 3,600 miles finishing up at the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the first to complete the journey unsupported. He's also cycled JOGLE (John O Groats to Lands End) and loves a good mid-week micro-adventure. Enjoy!

Hello, everybody, I’m your host Julia Doherty and a very warm welcome to the last episode 13 in this season of the Adventure Geek Walking Podcast. As many of you know, we started this podcast as a way of giving something back to our walking club members who decided to continue to support our club through this very difficult time. Twelve weeks on and we are now out walking again which is brilliant, albeit in smaller groups. As mentioned, this is the last episode for this season of the podcast. I am setting off to walk the 89 miles of the Jurassic Way on Saturday 4th July, from Stamford in Lincolnshire, through Northants and ending up in Banbury. Then our next long-distance hike is along Hadrians Wall in September, followed by the Camino de Santiago through the Pyrenees mountains in Spain in October. As you can imagine, with planning and training for these adventures, along with running a busy walking club, my time is quite limited. If we decide to launch season two, then this will be when I return from the Camino. Watch this space. Onto the show! This is a show for those who love everything to do with the outdoors, backpacking, hiking and of course walking. Hopefully, we have something for everyone in each episode. So without further ado, let me explain the contents of this week's show. We always start the podcast with a bit of a quiz in the form of “guess the sound” - sorry, but it is a weird one again this week! Segment two continues with the adventures of Janet & John’s latest antics. As one adventure comes to an end, another adventure is about to begin! We have no interview this week, so segment three is the education slot. This week I will share with you my top tips to lighten your load when on a long distance backpacking trip. We then end the show with Derek & Doreen. This week Doreen is feeling fruity and discovers the joy of swinging, much to Dereks delight. So, without further ado, let’s get this show on the road, and see if you can guess this week’s soundbite. I did promise a bit of a clue. So, Google told me that these animals have four stomachs! PLAY SOUND I am not sure how many people will get that one? Well, you might if you live in North America or Eatern Asia! As always, the answer to the soundbite will be revealed at the end of the podcast along with some facts about this creature. Right, now over to shiny shoes for the last episode of this season of Janet & John. Over to you John! SWOOSH PLAY JANET & JOHN’S EPISODE I feel a bit sad knowing that we won’t be hearing from Janet and John for a little while. John Pettinger is the author and narrator of this series and he has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Thanks John, for everything that you have put into this show. I hope that you continue to get more content ideas as you join us on our walks so that we can revisit the brother and sister duo in the future. PING Right, time for this week’s education slot. As I am heading off to backpack the Jurassic Way on Saturday, I thought I would share with you some of my top tips for lightning your load when on a long distance hike. I will never forget seeing a little Korean lady on the Camino last year who carried the biggest rucksack you have ever seen! As a golden rule, for a non-camping style hike then you really want to keep to under 10% of your body weight on your back. If you rucksack is too heavy then with a matter of days your will start to have problems with your lower back, hips and shoulders. In addition to this, you will also increase the risk of painful blisters and shin splints, which are pure evil when you are on an adventure. My top tips:- #1 - Wash & go. Yep, only carry one set of clothing, and wear one set of clothing. Then wash your clothes as you go. Because you are going away for a 2 week walking holiday, you only need two pairs of undies, not 14! #2- If you are looking at camping along the way, then look for a tent that uses walking poles as the frame rather than taking an additional set of poles. I use the Lanshan 2 person tent and it weighs less than 2lbs in weight. #3 - Water is probably the heaviest thing you will carry on a hike. If you know that you will be passing streams, lakes and rivers, then pack a water filter such as the Sawyer Squeeze or Be Free water filter and fill up as you go. #4 - If you are on the Camino or a similar sort of trip then take something like a Lush Shampoo Bar. This will wash your clothes, body and hair and one bar will last about a month. This saves weight rather than packing separate containers. #5 - Think about your backpack. I started off with an Osprey 65L pack, and I filled a 65L pack. I now walk with a much lighter rucksack, the Salomon Out Week 38L, which means I don’t have as much room to put stuff. A smaller and lighter pack forces you to think about what you are going to take with you. In all honesty, I could easily talk about this topic for a good hour or so as I have learnt so much over the last few year. If you have any questions about how to lighten your pack, then simply message me on the Facebook page, or email julia@adventuregeek.co.uk - i’m happy to help. PING Before we go into our finale with “Derek & Doreen” I would like to reveal the soundbite answer from the beginning of the show. For those of you who guessed an Elk, you would be right! Elk live 20 years or more in captivity but average 10 to 13 years in the wild. Only the males have antlers, which start growing in the spring and are shed each winter. The largest antlers may be 1.2 meters (3.9 feet) long and weigh 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Elk are social animals who live in same-sex herds of 10 to 20 individuals PING We are going to end the podcast Derek and Doreen’s latest adventure as venture off to once again see Michael at Cotswold Outdoors… PLAY DEREK & DOREEN EPISODE 1 Thanks Nigel, how did you do that without laughing? I was in fits! By the way, I popped into Cotswold Outdoors last weekend and bumped into Michael, but I didn’t have the heart to tell him that he was a superstar on our podcast! Nigel, I think everyone is in love with Derek & Doreen. Those of you who are listeners and part of the AG club will recognise some of the traits of these two individuals - I will say no more! Nigel, I know how much work has been put into these episodes each week and I can’t thank you enough. It was also your idea to do the podcast in the first place and what a brilliant idea it was. Cheers mate! As I draw the podcast to a close, I would like to leave you with this final thought. Remember that you don’t need to take any notes as we do all that for you. Links to anything that has been mentioned in today’s show can be found at www.adventuregeek.co.uk/podcastEP13 All that leaves me to say is Get Outside, Get Inspired, Now Go Take A Hike when you can. In the meantime, be safe. See you next week!
We're still here, and while Scotland's in Phase 1 of Lockdown, Extreme Polls are still in Phase 5 of Patter. If this episode doesn't leave you howling with laughter, we have to ask you, is everything okay at home? Despite the Tier 1 BANTER, we talk about the state of the world just now, particularly America, and provide details of how you can make a small difference over there, if you can.We then discuss looting, and in particular stealing a cruise ship (!?). Hadrian's Wall is covered and we round off the show with a shoot on Janey 'Thanos' Godley. We hope you enj...*Finger Snap*Music:Mitch Murder - Terminator Themehttps://www.joincampaignzero.org/
This week's podcast in a nutshell:- #1 - We always start the podcast with a bit of a quiz in the form of “guess the sound”. This week we have one of the cutest animals on the planet, that can also catch chlamydia! #2 - Segment two continues with the adventures of Janet & John’s latest antics. This week it is all downhill for Janet & John! #3 - Segment number three is an interview with Steve Hunt. If you are interested in exploring places to hike in the UK then this is the interview for you. #4 - The fourth segment is an education slot. This week I will be telling you about one of my favourite adventure authors. #5 - We then end the show with Derek & Doreen’s. This week Derek makes a list of shopping needs, but Doreen is not so sure! LINKS: The amazing adventure author I mentioned in the podcast was Keith Foskett. Visit his website at www.keithfoskett.com when you will find all of his books listed.
To wrap up Binge month, Lauren treats Greg to a triple feature focusing on ancient Romans in Britain with the films King Arthur (2004), Centurion (2010), and The Eagle (2011). As we compare and discuss these three films all loosely focused around Hadrian’s Wall (or as Greg calls it, The Great Wall of England) we examine the dangers of trusting local tour guides, third act romantic arcs, the pros and cons of Roman military careers and why you really should respect your nation’s borders. We learn about the Fall of the Roman Empire and the End of Roman Britain. Sophie and Ellie help tell the story of how the continuous barbarian attacks, corruption, overmighty generals and a manpower shortage led to the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. We dive into the story of Britain to show what this meant for one part of the Empire. Then we go to Rome itself for the Sacking of Rome in 410AD. Sophie sings a song which brings to life the abandonment of Britain by Rome. ----more---- Britain is now reconciled to Roman rule. The era of Boudicca is long past. Britain is heavily garrisoned with Roman soldiers to keep out the Irish, the Picts, the Angles and the Saxons. But the Roman Empire is getting weak. It is so big that the Empire is divided into a Western and an Eastern half. But this just fatally weakens it more. Corruption takes money away from funding the army Disease sweeps through the empire giving it a manpower problem The Roman Empire reacts by inviting tribes into the Empire to help defend it. But this just brings their enemies within the borders The Generals all want to be Emperor themselves. Their fighting weakens the Roman Empire Magnus Maximus takes the Roman legions to the continent to help make himself Emperor When he loses the legions are not replaced. Soldiers are taken off Hadrians Wall to defend Rome Then the final Roman soldiers go to help drive back the Goths who have stormed across the frozen River Rhine. Britain is defenceless. The Roman Emperor writes to the Britons to tell them that they are on their own. But none of this is enough to save the Western Roman Empire The Goth storm the city and sack Rome. After more and more attacks the Western Roman Empire is abolished. In this special Parkinson’s Awareness Month episode of When Life Gives You Parkinson’s, I chat with Dave Clark. Dave is a television presenter for SKY TV Sports from Leeds, England. He’s best known for anchoring darts and boxing coverage. His positivity is infectious. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in early 2011, but nearly a decade on he’s still broadcasting, has a great attitude, is raising tons of money and attention for the cause. Later this year, he will walk the length of Hadrian's Wall and climb Mount Everest to the base camp at 17,000ft, to raise funds for Parkinson's UK. He has already generated £500,000 towards the charity's work. He also recently announced he will be donating his brain to medical science – to help find a cure for Parkinson’s. During this conversation, we discuss what it was like to tell our bosses about our Parkinson’s, what it was like to meet The Boss (Bruce Springsteen) and why covering Muhammad Ali at the Atlanta Olympics back memories of his father. Dave and I also chat about how social media can be a blessing and curse, commiserate on the anxiety we feel as passengers in a car, and how frustrating it is that people still confuse our symptoms for intoxication. Dave also shared the follow advice for people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He shares this with anyone who contacts him and ask for guidance. How to live a happy life with Parkinson’s by Dave Clark Live in the now. Try not to look too far in the future. Always have something in the diary that excites you. If music makes you happy, don’t live in a silent house where you can brood. Dance, even if you haven’t danced for years. Keep busy, but don’t feel guilty about having the odd sofa day. Stay sociable. If your friends don’t ring you, ring them and arrange to see them on a regular basis. Get up. Dress up. Show up. Never give up. Say YES to invitations, even if you’re feeling rubbish. Exercise makes you feel good, even if you can only manage to get to the corner shop – do it! Stretch every morning. Eat well. Try not to skip meals when you’re shaky. Food is brain fuel. Water makes up about 73-percent of the human brain and helps to make hormones and neurotransmitters. Talk to other people with Parkinson’s online. It’s a really supportive community. Their experience can help your experience. Build a support team around you with people you can trust: friends, neighbours, physio therapist, neurologist, pharmacist, etc. This is “Team YOU.” Only tell people about your Parkinson’s when you are ready. Other people’s grief about your diagnosis can be as hard to deal with and process as the diagnosis itself. Remember, people with Parkinson’s can do amazing things. Do something amazing. Set on a spectacular ridgeline in the Cumbrian hills, Birdoswald Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall was once a meeting place for communities from across the Roman Empire. Men, women and children travelled from as far afield as Spain and Syria in order to serve at the empire’s north-western frontier. At Birdoswald, inscriptions and symbols reveal that the Dacians, from modern-day Romania, built a community here over many hundreds of years. In this final episode of the series Josie meets Andrew Roberts and Frances McIntosh to learn more about the people who lived at Birdoswald and what the site can tell us about how their identities changed over time. Burial urns displayed in the museum offer an intriguing insight into the lives and deaths of women and children living on the Wall. The Romanian poet Denisa Comănescu reads from her poem ‘A Birdoswald Sequence’ while locals Malcolm Redman and Angela Stephenson tell us about their lives on the Wall today. Jez Lowe is a singer and writer and in this Halloween episode of Open Country he explores the slightly sinister song and story of Northumberland. This is a county filled with history; from Roman walls to Border battles, and that may be one reason why it is also a place of legends, mythical creatures and ghostly stories. In Northumberland National Park Jez learns about the history beyond the iconic Hadrian's Wall. Further into the park he learns about the murderous Duergarr and meets Rachel Unthank to hear about the traditional song that depict maidens turned into serpents and cruel sisters. The mist and moors and castles of the county lend themselves to tales and songs with magic at their heart and at Featherstone Castle Jez uncovers the historical truth behind some of Northumberland's most spooky tales and finds out why we all love a good ghost story.
