When Hamilton premiered off-Broadway on February 17, 2015, it created an instant sensation, making American history genuinely exciting for modern audiences, and transforming Broadway with his color-blind casting. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda built on the blending of hip-hop and traditional Broadway musical styles that he brought to bear on In the Heights to tell the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and the birth of our nation. The show was nominated for 16 Tony Awards, winning 11 of them including Best Musical, and won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; its original Broadway cast recording peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and reached No. 1 on the Billboard rap albums chart. Now, 10 years after its debut, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to back to the room where it happened as we determine the Best Hamilton Song. Songs discussed include: “Satisfied,” “It's Quiet Uptown,” “Dear Theodosia,” “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story,” “Alexander Hamilton,” “Wait For It,” “What'd I Miss?” “You'll Be Back,” “Burn,” “Non Stop,” “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down),” “Helpless,” “The Schuyler Sisters,” “One Last Time,” “The Room Where It Happened,” “My Shot.” Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Gary Jackson and Joelle Boedecker, and Patreon sponsor Kathy Kingsley as they discuss 16 of the most beloved songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. As we publish this episode in 2024, it has been 30 YEARS since 1994. THIRTY. YEARS. How did that happen? That said, 1994 was a great year for music. In the days right before the inventions of Napster and the iPod, radio, MTV, VH1, record stores, and CD clubs still had an iron grip on what most Americans listened to. It was a diverse mix of genres and artists, with dance hits, grunge bands, rap, r'n'b, alternative rock, adult-contemporary ballads, and even some folk-pop indie darlings piercing through the noise and topping the charts. Now, continuing our series of looking back at songs from 20, 30, and 40 years ago, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine: what WAS the best song of 1994? Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Gary Jackson, Joelle Boedecker, and Kate Racculia they discuss 16 of the most iconic songs from 1994, narrowing them down until they make their final decision! Since its debut in 1967, the National Football League's Super Bowl has provided viewers as a little diversion amidst all the tackling and running and sports-ing: the halftime show. What began as the wholesome, kitschy entertainments found at most college games, with marching bands and majorettes, has since evolved into pop-culture spectacles featuring megawatt musical guests that sometimes grab more headlines than the games themselves. So now, with 56 halftime shows in the history books, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine: What IS the Best Super Bowl Halftime Show of all time? The Aughts -- the years between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2009 -- were a tumultuous period, to say the least. Still, those difficult times produced some spectacular new works of American pop culture, including in the Broadway musical genre. A slew of shows introduced during that decade became monster smashes that still play on Broadway today, and many more made significant marks in the Broadway canon. Now the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast wants to look back at that period and answer the question: what IS the Best 2000s Broadway Musical? Join Host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Curtis Creekmore, Gary Jackson, and Joelle Boedecker, and special guest Patreon supporter Trey Radu-Blackburn as they pull back the curtain on the Best 2000s Broadway Musical.
